    Wouldn't think this guy would do this. Best thing for this is stock intake with k&n filter. The oem design is made to suck in cooler air from the front of the vehicle; all you need is a less restrictive air filter such as k&n or something other than OEM air filter.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did have a K&N filter in there at one point, but there is always something better. I won't bother bog down this comment with details of it, I have explained a lot of it in other responses lol. I do agree that while this was sufficient (and it was), it was definitely not the most efficient. I have since modified my air box with the cone inside. Why? Because I like to tinker. You can see it here.
      th-cam.com/video/HiqFHagSmO4/w-d-xo.html
      It had better fuel economy and better engine response vs the standard air filter, K&N filter, and the open intake like this video. And I do plan some more mods at some point when I get a chance. But it is worth a watch.

    Okay so I have a 2008 Grand Prix and there was a hose coming out of my air filter box (obviously not the intake) but my problem is I’m not sure where to connect it? I could send pics? I’m not sure and all I can find is people doing it on the 3800 supercharged. Mine is just the 3800 v6

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No need to send pics. That is the air hose from the secondary air injection pump. It is not on all GPs, only models from certain emission compliant states (like California). Unfortunately, I have no experience with them since the models sold here (In Canada) did not have the secondary pump, so I am not sure where to run the hose. I even tried locating a car here, but could not find one. Very rare on the east coast in Canada.

    I’ve an 07 and I’ve two hose one connected to the secondary air injection pump and I didn’t use a rubber connector I put it straight to the mass airflow sensor and it did seal on but I left the back half of the box should I take it out like you did

    • @NexusAuto

      My GP doesn't have a secondary air pump. That only came in certain models, particularly California models or a couple of other states. Unfortunately, since I've never seen the air pump directly, I've never been able to find a good way to work with it together with the intake.

      I can also certify that the intake mod does give the car a good boost in throttle response, and maybe a few HP. Engine gets more air because it breathes easier from the less restricting air passage, makes it sound more beefy.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, thanks for confirming, leaving input and details. I had this conversation with people, but oddly, I find CAI seems to be constantly debated. While I did not record the HP gains, the car was quicker off the line for sure and even in mid-rev acceleration. Your description is perfect!

    • @Calling321
      @Calling321 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you think HP gains would be noted if there was a tune done? Especially if a second "true" exaust outlet was added? To my understanding, some car adjust better than others depending on their programming.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Calling321 Definitely. I know they are quite a few tunes out there (Overkill was a popular one, but there is quite a few out there). The extra cold air will help with adjusted ignition timing and fuel delivery. The GPs take well to tunes, but I would not recommend it unless you get more done. The car will naturally adjust air/fuel ratio with an air intake, and for the amount of money you would spend on either a canned tune or a tuner so you can tune yourself, you will not get your moneys worth. However, once someone does a lot more (lets say performance ignition, performance exhaust, intake, etc), then a tune would really get some nice numbers from the car.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep, is your car from California, or another emission-strict state?
      That is the air hose for the secondary air pump, which was really on Cali cars (and a few others). Many other places did not have it.
      Unfortunately, that is pretty much the only part I have not encountered, simply because it is not in any Canadian GP cars, and many northern state 3800 engines in general. I have seen people install an intake with that hose, but it almost always gets a check engine light. I have not met someone personally who had a solution. So unfortunately, I could not give a solution. Your best, safest bet (if you cannot find a solution from someone else) is to either have a custom fitting made that can hook up that hose to your new Intake, or get a drop in performance filter instead.

      @hexeezy234 yeah, that's a good kit. Especially if you're looking to run a more serious build, getting a good intake kit is a good idea, and ZZPs is a great one.

    But does it give more power or lose. Looks like your adding heat which will give less power cause it's hotter in the engine bay.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been asked this. Especially when the car is in motion, the cool air that hits it from the gap in the hood and the opening in the fender kept it cool, and cool air was going in. Some have tried to debunk this, and it can vary by car, but where this sits, it makes a difference.
      That being said, I do want to point out a few things, just for transparency.
      You really do not get much HP gains from an intake. You will get a few, but not much, It really improves the response the engine makes, and gives you a bit better pick up from acceleration.
      Also, while I found this better for driving, if you are sitting around in city traffic idling for long periods of time, then heat does build up in the engine bay, and you are sucking that in. So depends on you driving situation. If you dont get stuck in traffic a lot, then this has some great benefits.
      Adding to that, this is still not the most efficient way. You can hone out your air box, which eliminated the idling issue and focuses the air (video here th-cam.com/video/HiqFHagSmO4/w-d-xo.html). Or getting one of those K&N filterchargers or a ZZP air box is a great bet too.
      Hope this helps.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's always hard to say, because it all depends on how far you want to go. For me, the first 'cosmetic ' upgrade was improving the audio system, and for performance, it was the 'performance trifecta', which is brakes, suspension and rims/tires, and I added this intake fun. Now from there, it all depends on budget and skill level. Good news is that there is so many parts available for this car to upgrade, lots of good choices. And it is fairly easy to work on too.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally, I always say you can upgrade a car at any point, at any mileage, at any time. But the one thing I would also advise of is that as these cars (or any cars for that matter) get up in age, you'll need money to also maintain while upgrading. And sometimes an upgrade will lead to a repair later on (for example, lowering the car may put pressure on control arms or driveshafts). Worth noting that I didn't really start upgrading my grand prix until it had about 150000kms, which is pretty close to 100000 miles. And I still have it and it still runs beautifully.

      Depends on what you are looking for, and of course, budget.
      The one like in this video is very budget friendly, but not as efficient as more expensive ones.
      You can also modify the existing air box and allow for more air to go into the engine.
      And then there is full intake systems, which are very efficient and give better low end response, but cost a lot.
      All work fine, but the more you pay, the better it is. I had them all, and the more time and money that went in, the more effective it was. But even the one in this video, which was a no name cone and intake tube, worked pretty well.

    After going over my new short ram air intake. I installed the new air filter on to the MAF and gave it a run. I noticed a difference in sound but I'm not so sure in performance or if I made my car ran cooler. The idea of having it exposed to heat from the engine bothers me. I popped the hood and everything seemed hot. I was thinking of converting the stock air box to fit with my new air filter or just end up buying a heat shield.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is hard to say what you will be getting HP wise, but there should be some improvement. I got gains both in MPG and HP but making this change, not to mention fuel economy. But a few things to point out for you. /////1. I actually have a video on what I did to convert the air box to accept the cone. You can take a look (self promotion complete lol)/////2. The engine heat can be an issue, but it is minimal at best. Some people ripped me on this video for it. There is NO DOUBT that having a heat shield, the stock air box, or one of those filtercharger kits would be an improvement. However, it is worth pointing out the stock GPs 3.8L non supercharged were rated at new for combined 21 MPG at best. Before work started o my car, it was getting a decent combined 19 MPG. Currently, with all the mods and changes, I am getting 22 MPG on my 05, which is very good. /////3. I was getting 21 MPG before changing the stock air box. The reason is the filter sits off to the side, and when driving, cold air is blowing in from near the headlight(which is what feeds the stock system). After a highway drive, if you feel your cone, it should be cool(mine was). Even city driving, the cone would never get as hot as the engine, as the heat just wouldn't permeate enough to affect the intake. I had better pickup, improved fuel economy(like half an MPG lol) and smoother idle. /////4. that said, getting a heat shield/filtercharger/convert air box. It will still be an improvement, regardless of how well this set up works. /////5. You said yours is a short ram air intake. Is yours shorter than the one in my car? That would make a big difference vs my set up. /////Thanks again for watching. Definitely appreciate it.

    • @SentinelEx
      @SentinelEx 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nexus Auto Yes it's a short ram. But for some reason the pipe it came with that's supposed to go connected between the throttle body and MAF wasn't set for my engine only do to there being an extra hole for god knows what. So what I did was simply attach the new air filter onto the MAF the way you did yours. Except mine I didn't use a straight pipe between the air filter and MAF just the filter with a coupler onto the MAF. I'm not sure air was being sucked in at it's full potential I seen other videos where air is quite loud being sucked into the AI. The radiator hose gets really hot and that's what bothers me of the heat getting to the AI. Thanks for the reply greatly appreciated!

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No problem, at all. I can see what you're saying, with the filter being a bit closer. Not only are you closer to the rad hose, but to the exhaust manifold that runs by the block, which is where a lot of the heat come from. Even with my set up, there is no doubt that it would be sucking up some hot air, just that it was being offset with the cold air especially when driving. however, you are closer to hot components + further away from that spot where the cold air comes up. There is no doubt that it will be sucking up as much air as possible, but its the type of air for sure. I will tell you the cone makes a huge difference in sound too. I have this no name aftermarket one that came with the kit, and sounded ok...performed ok as well. But when I got rid of that and when to the current K&N cone, it sounded better and performed smoother too. So the cone makes a difference. I agree with your thoughts though...it may be a good idea to invest in some type of heat shield.

      Hmmmm, that is a tricky one, as you need to have the air box there. The only thing I can say to try, is this video here. th-cam.com/video/HiqFHagSmO4/w-d-xo.html
      In the video, I converted the air box to work with a Cold Air Intake. It is my current set up on the car. The only difference for you is you would probably want to put a small mesh over the opening in the air box for the Air Pump, as the cone inside will not be able to protect it from contaminants, as a standard air filter would. Other than that, this may work for you.

    Dude why didn't you spend the extra $30 on a cheap heat shield, the video was amazing and very helpful, but your intake is right by the exoust defeating the purpose of the cold air intake because now I sucking in hot air from the exoust and the engine

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      It was my next intent, but I ultimately honed out my air box and made that work (which has been great). FYI, because it is offset, away from the engine, and not overtop, and but the intake duct in the left fender, this does not get as hot as people think it does. My intake was indeed a few degrees cooler than stock. However, in downtown stop and go traffic, it did get a few degrees hotter. But the additional air volume being pulled more than compensated. I had many debates with others on this. Some cars, it is a terrible idea, but this was...ok. It definitely could be better (making a heat shield, reworking the air box, etc), but this was more effective than it would seem.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If you took the time to read some comments, I have explained this dozens of times already. I have long ago explained how I gained throttle response off of this. Main points to mention is that the cold air that would normally go into the air box now blows directly on to the filter. I had put a thermometer to it years ago and it was not even warm, not even close to air around the engine. YES, I gained throttle response from it, primarily from the cooler air that is still coming form around the lights and from where the air comes in from the fender, and for the sheer volume increase in air coming from that the old air box set up restricts. But it was not the most efficient set up for sure, it could be better. So i did modify my air box and put the cone inside (and guess what, there is a video for that too, go figure). And even then, there is more work I could do inside the fender to increase this further. But thank you for the sarcasm, it added sooooooo much. Great job! Much appreciated. Great applause.

      I can tell you at minimum, you will need the Y pipe at the end, along with a driver side muffler,, the 2 rubber mounting flanges and the bracket that mounts the rubber flanges to the frame. I'll be honest, the hardest part was the mounting bracket. GM has discontinued the mounting bracket, and I could not find a single seller through any 3rd party source in the Canada or the US who had them. I ultimately had to get it from a junkyard. Ah nice. It will be very oud for sure! It can still be done, but you would likely need to fabricate the metal hooks and have them welded on, so the fubber mounts can attach and hold them in place. Or get some universal exhaust hangers. That part is still the easiest part of it. You need to find a way to hang the driver side pipe, and will need to either find a bracket off of a GT/GTP, or have one made for you. Go to 8:05 in that video I tagged earlier if you want to get a better idea of the bracket I am talking about. But it can definitely be done!

      I get asked that often. It sits off to the side, so it doesn't suck in as much as you would think. Additionally, the sucking in hot air is only a thing at along idle. When in motion, the filter is hit with a lot of cool air coming in from various areas. When I did this years ago, I tested the filter and it was very cool afterwards. I definitely had better acceleration and better fuel economy numbers after this.
      That being said, it is infinitely better to have it closed off. I eventually modded out the air box (I have a separate video for that) and it made a bigger difference. But I ran the above setup for a couple if years with no issue.

    may want to take a drimle cutting disk and cut down the original box that held the ecu mod so that its flat and install over it that way it mounts naturally and you can allways take a plastic box cut to fit over it like a dome and zip in place

K&N only makes the filtercharger for 04 and 05 models. 06, 07 and 08 is not available. but the regular k&n filter is the same for all models, 04-08. also, I checked with other airbox manufacturers and they claim it is the same for all series III GPs. and on a brief visual inspecting, they factory airboxes look the same. so not sure why K&N doesn't offer it for 06-08. if there is any insights you can give, that would be awesome, because it has me stumped as to what the difference is, if any. but thank you for bringing it to my attention

  • @david2odo
    @david2odo 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Clean work, but this coulda been WAAAAAY easier. You keep the one piece of that airbox, to use as a heatshield. You bore out the plastic hole, just big enough to have the new pipe fit right inside.
    Add some heat shielding, and make it flush with the hood.
    Boom.
    Cold air intake that doesn't cost you $300. 😂

      Well, Mr Ymous, if that is your real name (lol couldn't resist!)
      To be honest, I would think this is easier. Aside from the bracket, everything just bolts together, more or less. However, your way is far more professional and efficient. Eventually, I did actually cut out my air box interior entirely and put the cone inside, making it a cold air intake, but pulling in a lot more air from the fender. I made a video on that too. Still, I have other plans for the future with the intake!

    Putting a cold air intake in an engine bay that gets hot makes no sense

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The car did actually perform better than stock like this, primarily as when the car is in motion, a lot of cooler air is hitting the filter all around, and it actually does not get hot at all. However, it is pulling a bit more hot air at idle, when there is no motion, and I am still losing a lot of efficiency vs having an enclosed space...you are 100% correct there. I did gut out my air box and installed the filter inside of it a few years ago...I have a video on that too. It helped alot, but there is further mods that I want to do. Hopefully, this year.

      +ShiftCFW CSGO & Modding Videos sorry for the late reply. There is some risk(minimal) that it will be taking in hot air, but the intake points down and away from the engine. .It is really taking in air from an opening right below the driver side headlight, where a cool stream of air comes in(that fees the stock air intake). At speed, this is what feeds the system. Results have been good too,, I noticed better fuel economy, and a smoother idle(and a better sound) from the change. They also sell enclosed unit, which protect against the heat. Of course, those are better, but not as cost effective. Thanks for watching too

      How to put in a ghetto quasi-CAI on the 05 GP. Stick to k&n if you
      want something that looks good and gives great performance, because a
      heat shield is necessary for this to work better than the stock airbox
      on the GP. In fact, this ghetto-mobile may work worse than the stock
      airbox. It will just suck in hot air when that hood is closed, fella,
      making the engine run worse than the relatively cold air the stock
      airbox brings into the intake, with most likely a reduction in mpg and
      hp. Hell, you might as well have gone the cheaper Home Depot CAI
      route....just google that, if you don't know what it is. It would at
      least work better than this bastardized-looking setup! If you cannot
      afford the k&n CAI and you don't like the look of the Home Depot
      CAI, you're far better off with dropping in a k&n filter in the
      stock airbox than this shitty mess you made! K&N air filters do
      significantly improve airflow into the engine, and you don't have to
      change them every three or four oil changes like regular air filters.
      They just need a cleaning and lube every 50k miles or so. They'll last 1
      million miles, because they're made of an oil-impregnated cotton
      material that's very durable and lasting in that environment.

      Riiiight. i remember now. We talked about that a few weeks back, I think. Still having loss of power huh? Something else is definitely going on there. The intake will make a difference in how the car drives, but I think only after the issue is resolved. Lower power could be a variety of things. Have you had the compression checked on the engine? How does it run? Smooth, or does it vibrate and make a lot of noise?

      Nexus Auto well a mechanic is looking at it next friday but it drives smooth and doesnt make loud noises. When i start the car up it makes somewhat of a loudish rev and the rpm's are high for a few seconds then it idles down. Sometimes when I really push the car it accelerates through first gear descently but as soon as it shifts into second at 50mph its a slow climb to 60mph.

    • @NexusAuto
      @NexusAuto  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ok let me know what the mechanic says. i am really curious now as to what is happening with you car. did you and your dad check the fuel pressure at the cylinders? I don't think the Intake Manifold would cause this type of issue...it is possible, but unlikely, and not common on GPs. However, the Mass Air Flow sensor could cause it, so that may be the culprit.
