What are your thoughts on using metformin to reduce your insulin level while on a true ketogenic diet? Been on keto (less than 20 carbs a day) since September and I'm down 90 pounds. My A1C down to 4.7 but my insulin level is 12. Will a low dose of metformin help reduce my insulin levels? Thanks

    • @drekberg
      @drekberg  5 ปีที่แล้ว +34

Typically I would say that Metformin could speed things up if you are on keto, but if your A1c is already 4.7, I don't know that it will do much. Lost 90 lbs. Nice Job.😀 That means something is working. If you are getting results, i would not add chemicals to the mix. I would probably suggest longer fasting periods to get the insulin to release it s grip. Try 24h, 36h, 48h etc. See how you feel and when and if you're ready try 7 days or so. Just be sure to monitor closely, because taking medication on a fast could make you hypoglycemic.

Now I have come to a point that I backed off everything but a single 500 mg dose of metformin ER once a day. Next blood draws in 4 months. Will reassess the metformin's value then. Thanks again for your thoughts on the matter. I love your videos and share them often to help people understand how bad the SAD is for their bodies.

The most prophetic thing I have heard on this subject was written by Dr Jason Fung in his book the diabetes code is “ type 2 diabetes is a dietary disease, and the only solution is a dietary one”. The pill pushers at the doctors office just want to give you meds that will make you gain lots of weight. They won’t advise you to fast. The absolute worst drug you can use is a long acting insulin, you will do nothing but gain weight. Fasting and exercise is the answer.

Was diagnosed with diabetes 20 + years ago. My former doctor advised a low fat high carb diet with various medications. I got much fatter and sicker. Doctor blamed it on me. Said I was eating to much. The only reason I got better was because of doctors like you on you tube. Six years ago started eating low carb, high fat, moderate protein, and I only eat two meals a day, no snacks. Hunger is never a issue, despite the fact that before I changed my diet I was always hungry. I'm now down 70 pounds.Could stand to lose another 15. Blood sugar not perfect at 105, but a1c at 5.6, Triglycerides way down at 110, have plenty of energy and feel good and healthy. Thank you for what you do doc.

Any doctor who recommends a high carb diet to any diabetic, Type I or 2, should go back to med school and try again. NO doctor should ever encourage carbs, especially processed carbs, to a diabetic. It's a known fact however, that many doctors know little about Diabetes. My husband is a T1D and has been for 55 years. One clueless doctor nearly killed him years back, and I fired him! Meanwhile some true experts moved to our area and things became much better for diabetics. Don't ever be afraid to fire a bad or less knowledgeable doctor; they are certainly not all created equally and the good ones are worth fighting for to be under their care!

When I was diagnosed with type2, my doctor said to eat oatmeal and blueberries. I looked at her with a puzzled look and asked if she truly believed that carbs will help with type 2 diabetes. She skipped right over my question as she explained how Metformin would help. I took neither her advice or her medication. I did exactly as described here. Needless to say, I do not have type 2 diabetes any longer and feel like a million bucks.

Same here, although I did take the meds for a while, went on a strong keto diet and lots of exercise. Things went well for a while, then I started getting complacent and indulging in a bad diet again and also not exercising as much, then relying on the meds as a crutch. I am back on the diet and exercise, and plan to come of the meds again, soon.

@@hrh-xj4fh I disagree. The diet I was eating caused the condition. My blood sugar is perfectly normal and has been so for years. I have reintroduced limited carbs back into my diet and I'm normal. The important point here is carbs must be consumed in moderation. A person that is type 1 diabetic is an actual disease and this condition must be treated medically.

At the point of writing I have lost about 11 stones (150 lbs or so) since July of 2018 - But 8 of those stones since January 2019... Having been fat for around 20 years, I finally found explanations which made sense over Xmas of 2018 reference my own over production of insulin. I have found that if I don't provoke my pancreas into overdoing the insulin, the weight just falls off me. This is not about over consumption of cakes and biscuits... this is about not eating fruit, Weetabix, Shredded wheat, corn-oil; not eating 3 times a day and instead eating when properly hungry etc, etc, etc.
My HB1AC has fallen from 6.5 in May of 2018 to 5.1 in July of this year. I no longer take any meds for the diabetes and my blood pressure is now very nearly normal. If only I knew what I have recently found out but 20 years ago.
Too much insulin makes you fat and stops you losing weight - good luck everyone - is someone like me can do it *so can you*

the reason why most physicians lack education regarding diet is because since big pharma owns the medical schools, they deliberately don't include diet education for doctors. because if everyone starts getting diet advice from their doctors, they'll start feeling better which means less meds and profit for big pharma. as a doctor, you should know that because non-holistic doctors work for big pharma.

Wow I really love the way you explain this. I self diagnosed myself as insulin resistant because my doctors wouldn't run tests on me and I fit the bill. I started to educate myself recently because I really need to lose weight and no matter how hard I workout I cannot lose it. This really shows me why after 9 months of heavy excessive I only lost 15lbs. A nutritionist tried to tell me I just wasn't active enough and told me to eat carbs, but with meat and veggies. Now I just eat the meat and nothing else and lost 4lbs in one week without exercise. It's sad that even going to a nutritionist doesn't help. At least we have youtube, so thank you.

Pharmacist here, and I'd just like to offer my input. You do an amazing job explaining things, and you are absolutely right in everything you say. I was once a certified diabetes educator, and have since moved on to different pastures. One thing that we are taught is to explain clearly to patients the extreme importance of lifestyle modifications, and we are urged to recommend the ADA guidelines for exercise (30 minutes of moderate intensity exercise daily). I find that many medical doctors over medicate patients, and don't stress the pivotal importance of lifestyle modifications. By contrast I find that Doctors of Osteopathic medicine push lifestyle modifications harder than Medical Doctors. So for patients who struggle with lifestyle modifications I tend to refer them to DOs rather than MDs as they tend to be more receptive to lifestyle modifications under the care of a DO, in my opinion.
Another thing I'd like to add is that GLP-1 agonists actually work in more ways than you suggest. GLP-1 agonists are more similar to mimetics as they are designed to mimic the effect of Glucagon Like Peptide 1, an endogenous hormone secreted by L-cells of the distal illium and colon. They:
    1) Amplify the glucose dependent insulin response. This is different from sulfonylureas as sulfonylureas force the pancreas to secrete more insulin. This is why there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia with sulfonylureas that we don't see with GLP-1 Agonists.
    2) Inhibit glucagon release.
    3) Suppress appetite.
    4) Slow gastric emptying
So while GLP-1 agonists do cram cells full of sugar, they also help promote people to eat less, and lose weight. This may give people the edge they need as hunger is often the biggest struggle for people who are attempting to lose weight.
I love the work that you do, and I find you extremely fascinating. I could watch your lectures all day!

How do we thank this man for teaching us these truths?
My dad was diagnosed with diabetes at age 58. He had been reasonably healthy, albeit somewhat overweight with belly fat. He started a treatment plan with insulin injections just before his 59th birthday, with no diet plan. He died shortly after his 59th birthday from pancreatic cancer?! It NEVER sounded right to me since he didn't have any signs of cancer in his previous medical tests. 😞
If my dad had known these things I am certain he'd be around today.
    THANK YOU Dr. Ekberg ❤️🙏

Make sure you keep your electrolytes up (NOT sports drinks though!). Get a hi-potency potassium supplement, take a dime sized sprinkle of salt (I drink it down ini one gulp with a tablespoon of water follwoed by a nice big glass of water. Otherwise you're gonna feel dizzy & weak as you get dehydrated. Oh and invest in some good recipe ingredients like almond & coconut flour to stave off cravings for wheat & sweets, and some stevia --w/o maltodextrin. Lots of pitfalls to navigate. Dr Berg on youtube has lots of info on that. Good luck!

Sure relax for about 10 mins after eating but then do something: clean the car , sweep the floor , do some gardening etc etc or simply go for a half hour walk! ☀NB: Had some porridge in the morning (30g with water & the ONLY carbs I have all day!) .. checked blood sugar after 15 mins = 9.5mmols/L ; went for half hour brisk walk - BGL after = 4.1 🙂👍

6 weeks ago I tested my blood glucose and it was 115, it was a shock to me as I'm very fit at 45 years old with about 10% body fat. I was prediabetic!!! Knowing that I have a long history of diabetes in my familly, I searched the internet ways to prevent T2D. Found your channel and plenty others I considered starting a low carb diet and was hesitating between Keto and carnivore diet I finally decided to do keto mostly because I found easier for me to get saciated with fat as the volume of food is less.
5 weeks after starting a keto diet my morning glucose is between 85-95. and the benefits are huge, mental clarity among all.
But the most intersting is that even after losing 7 pounds in this time period I gain strenght at the gym, it came to a total surprise to me because I always taught the strenght always comes with weight gain :) At least on a high carb diet.
Thank you very much Dr. Ekberg ;)

Amazing, amazing, amazing!!!! Thank you Dr Ekberg....My endocronologist said I qualify for concentrated insulin... He put me on Humulin R U-500.... I take 240 units in the morning...and 160 units at night.... Pius jardiance, plus Metformin twice a day..... for the last year.....I am following a strict low-carb diet. Under 20 carbs a day and at times maybe 10. I am doing intermittent fasting. I started out at 12 hours, and I can now do up to 20....working my way up to 24...I cannot seem to get my sugars lower than 200 /240’s....whether fasting, morning sugars, or throughout the day....but I have lost 40 pounds in approximately 6 to 8 weeks....I am so thankful that I found this channel!....I am learning and becoming more educated thanks to doctors like yourself....I am going to conquer this because it seems that all my doctors insist that I am lazy and don’t want to lose weight.... In addition to not following the rules ....because I don’t want to go to weight-loss classes nor see Nutritionists ....that insist I need to eat three meals a day +3 snacks....Or.... I keep getting forced into considering weight loss surgery!!! Sorry for the long drawn out comment....but your videos are so real and accurate...This is exactly what goes on out there in the non-educated world of insulin resistance and weight issues. Thank you again Dr Ekberg 🌻🌻🌻

Funny how in all my visits to the doctors office they never mentioned anything about eating a low carb diet, not 1 doctor. I also went to a diabetes education a while back and they told the women 60 carbs per meal and for the men 75 carbs, 3 meals and snacks in between is also what they say. I've been sticking too 20-40 carbs a day and I.F. and already cut my insulin in half from 95 per day just by watching these videos of my TH-cam doctors lol
