While it may be one of the simplest topics for those in the field, knowing what a deadbolt lock is and what types exist definitely helps the average consumer. What do you think of this video? Have any suggestions for us? Let us know here in the comments!

Well, the dead latch prevents shimming with a flexible shim which is one of the reasons people put in deadbolts so you do get that advantage.
Adding wood structure for longer screws and using longer screws makes it pretty secure and if you can find a bigger, longer plate with that tab you could add that too...
It provides the main advantage of deadbolts.
There are situations, doors where only one hole is there or desired and so the dead latch has it's place.
I suppose they may not be one inch throw but structure, a metal plate with longer screws into structure addresses that... especially with some plates with rods like you showed.
With one hole in a door you get more security than a latch-set provides with a dead latch.
    Thanks for the informative video!

A habit I’ve learned when working on a customers door is to check the depth of the deadbolts hole in the door jamb to make sure the deadbolt is able to fully extend. If it cannot fully extend then it won’t “deadlock” and can be easily manipulated back into the unlock position. Btw, I’m in Missouri and I’ve never heard of a “renters deadbolt”. I know renters sometimes use slide latches, door guardians or use their own deadbolts which normally they’re supposed to make sure landlord has access to a key but I get called out often because they changed the locks and locked out landlords access. I know your in Texas where it’s legal but double cylinder deadbolts are not allowed on residential doors in my jurisdiction due to fire codes and some insurance companies wont cover the loss of life liability as well if someone were trapped by a double cylinder deadbolt. I use Hartford and they said not to install them so make sure your insurance allows it. I can install them in any non residential application though. You always have great videos. Thanks for sharing 🙏🏼✌🏼.

so, on my deadbolt, key turns but sticks in cylinder and cannot turn fully to unlock. This is only on the outside, works fine on the inside (this is double sided lock)

the point of a lock is to make the intruder have a harder time entering youre premise and if u saw people lock picking youre house its time to rock and roll.
