- Can smart locks provide more than convenience? From thermostats and rugs to lights and speakers, smart home technology upgrades have gained popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic. Smart home locks are often keyless and can be opened with a passcode or opened from your phone. But do these actually increase the security of your home?
WSJ asked Marc Tobias, a lock security expert, to test out the Google Nest x Yale Lock by looking at the hardware, convenience and security of the lock.

A realistic security test would at least give an expert or even better a team of experts a month or so to play with it. Let's be realistic the risk isn't someone randomly coming up against a new device it'll be when someone discovers an easy compromise and shares it widely. WSJ you shouldn't be advertising products, you should be giving honest reviews.

@@jaztin7960, no dummy in the lock picking world we post of flaws and bypass tools for locks. So there are many smart locks that can be bypassed in seconds without destroying them. The burglar goes for the easiest way to enter which was either the glass or the fact that the door could easily be kicked down.
What team of experts? What month? Just wait till neighbour points a roof camera to your lock.

Reality with break-ins is the thieves don't pick locks, they use brute force to kick a door in, or they break the glass if there is any on the door. You are far better off reinforcing and hardening your door and jamb before you upgrade to smart locks. These locks are meant for convenience and buying into a connected home.

Yeah but some of us are super lazy so we need key card locks not touch locks.... not sure why they did not look into that first.... just saying...
His bump tool won’t work too well on the Yale smart lock, but will work great on the window next to it.

Tbh if someone is prepared to break the glass, you're in bigger trouble and that's pretty hard to prevent without upgrading the entire home's physical security.

What do you mean force or break it? If it's not easily picked or hacked then the intruder will just opt to break a window. Drilling into a lock would draw more attention than breaking a window

Shows that WSJ is actually trying to pass this as legitimate journalism. Also shows that TH-cam aka Google is totally fine with that as long as it aligns with their interests. The lock is a Google product after all.

We ended up exchanging this model for the slimmer version th-cam.com/users/postUgkx0jZ_lGlDVJhDnmagEU8gn47cmfPNlLQU because it was too wide for the only door trim area that made sense to mount it on. However, we should have just noted the dimensions prior to purchasing. Otherwise, we love the doorbell. It works perfectly, and the video is very clear, even at night.
This is definitely an ad. No way a veteran locksmith like him would ever speak highly of a smart lock if it was his own words.

It's killer. I'm sad that where I'm moving to doesn't have this but this video did tell me how important it will be to install my own security cameras when you're a renting vs owning the property. If you can afford it, please get it! It's a game changer.

To pick this lock, you don’t ask a locksmith. You ask a hacker. Old mechanical gen vs next gen.
that’s not how it works, the weakest link of any lock is the keyhole
And yet none of these have ever been hacked and certainly never would not be by someone stupid enough to be a burglar. As he pointed out, they would just break a window if they couldn't get in through the lock.
It's kinda like asking a diesel mechanic to diagnose what's wrong with a Tesla motor.

He put it as nice as he could to make it sound like it's slightly better than a regular lock. Because of the other things that were not tested.
And 90% of doors could probably get kicked in easily as well. Safety is an illusion and locks don’t always keep you safe.

Modern glasses can have differen level of break protection. Sandwich glasses with high strength films on or inside of them.
You don’t need an expert lock breaker to beat a smart lock. You need an expert hacker. Just like you wouldn’t bring a hacker to open the glovebox of a Soviet-era tank.

Which lock allows you to add multiple homes (more than 5)? Nest offers up to 5 homes via Google home and I need more than 5. Any thoughts?

Why is this whole video just one long ad for a Yale smart lock?
I have this lock but it’s not the Google one they sell a regular Yale with wifi that can connect to Alexa Google Apple HomeKit and Samsung Smart things it a pretty cool lock the thing I like about it is that when you come home and your within 20 ft of the lock it opens by itself so you don’t have to type the code in when your hands are full
I think the thing i hate most in modern design is capacitive touch screen buttons that could be physical buttons. Imagine trying to get this hideous thing to work in the rain.

Just to be clear, the guy that breaks into smart locks is likely going to have a background in hacking, not lockpicking.

Correct me if I'm wrong. What is someone break the glass/montior of that lock making touch insensitive and you don't have that mobile option with you .
In that kind of situation what can be done?
If glass is broken, the only other option I see is mobile.
You can render normal looks inusable with extreme ease as well...
Interesting video but I feel not enough was done to test the lock security.
I sayed in an Air BnB with a Yale smart lock once. It took just one night for me to realize I never wanted a Yale smartlock. I think I spent more time fumbling with the darn thing than I did sleeping inside the Air BnB.

So is nest super secure, do they have a single signal streams that is sent in the clear like the burglar alarm that rhymes with Scimply Face? Does the lock have firmware that can be upgraded to make up for bugs and vulnerabilities that come up over the life of the product? The question is how much will it slow the adversary down, more time is better, but there should be other layers of security to catch the perp when they are trying to get past the lock. If nest is hacked and its also connected to the security system well then you get the picture.
I want something like this but for my commercial building. I own a business and often rent it out to people. I would love to hand them codes that only work on certain days and times instead of a copy of my key. Does anyone know if this would could be used on a commercial building or of any that are out there? 👀

You can put multiple locks on that door, will just break the glass to unlock it.

I have a group that has picked our door locks, have picked locks i have purchased online, we had a professional machinist put in a cable, with 2 heavy duty locks, and our neighbors STILL break-in and steal AND vandalize our place and our fairly new car. Plus, we recently purchased 6 devices from Simple Safe monitoring devices and their security services;… the thieves STILL manage to bypass EVERY device we have had installed. We cannot afford to move to a new location.
PLEASE, please ANY good suggestions to keep my , it seems like, our neighbors out of our home short of getting some Dobermans or Rottweilers?

The obvious information is: if you can’t picked up the lock, break the nearest glass. So the real advise must be :first take a plain multi security points door.
my house uses hardened door and a solid metal-concrete filled tube bar to secure front door. You could broke the key but not slamming into a barred door
I enjoy the quote at the beginning of this video that says who, better to test this then an expert. However, this expert admits at the end of the video that absolutely no testing was done against any of the actual electronics or wireless capabilities of this device.
In other words, you gave an analog expert a digital device, and they affectively offered a minimal opinion around how secure it is. Not very useful, but I would say the advice around your windows and door being a greater risk is what most homeowners should pay attention to.

Kind of besides the point. Same thing can be said about installing a 1m thick steel door. Someone could break de window and enter in the house.
This wasn't much of a security test. You didn't really give him a chance to break in. He could have used force to break the lock casing off or could have attempted to disconnect the electrical signal.
What about the battery life?
The only difference is hackers will unlock your doors instead of lockpickers.
What do you do to open your door if the lock fails i think this is a important aspect and they didn't cover it Quickset has his own version of it and it has a key cylinder below the keypad
Except that key cylinder is easily picked. I think that original lock on the door may have been a kwikset
It seems super secure until someone walks by with an app that auto unlocks it
"Connectorize" is not a word.
Keypad locks are vulnerable to wear patterns and dusting. 4 digit code you have 256 possible combinations. Some clever tricks on eliminating improbable patterns and you can get that down to 64, or possibly 32 combinations.
The circuitry is on the inside of the lock, so it is harder to attack physically, but not impossible.
The biggest issue is with the Weave Protocol that Nest uses. It has some big bugs.
All of that said, how many robberies or home invasions start with a picked lock? This is specifically not a high security lock, if you have a priceless painting, or state secrets squirreled away in your house that someone would go through that effort to not be detected .... I dunno ... Perhaps your McMansion needs a vault or a full time security detail.
Prob 90% of homes here in S.Korea use smart locks. Haven't had to carry a home key in ages.
A lock connected to internet sounds Completely safe NO HARM at all ... It's not like NSA or FBI is going to hack it!

We all grow up in different areas. In my old neighborhood, it was very common for people to leave their front doors unlocked almost all of the time. People would also leave their garage doors open and unattended. Some people feel the need for multiple locks on their doors and with bars on their windows while others don't. The real question you should be asking is whether it is normal to feel threatened so much by intruders and if there is anything you can do to get away or change that problem.

Real question is do you want the theft to break a 60-100$ lock or a 500$ window ?
Either way if the theft want to get in he will. The difference will be how much that intrusion will cost you.
Brute force by Break glass and open a door is like Military invasion cross the custom with passports. Is Russian Military passports and Visa approved to enter Ukraine? The officials and technologies companies does not guarantee if you do not play with rules.

That lock doesn’t have commercial grade component’s & would fold under a brute force attack.

"smart" locks like this have 2 problems:
- most if not all of them need some kind of cloud service to work. This creates all kinds of security and privacy issues, and if your internet connection goes down, you're screwed.
- there's no keyhole. If the thing stops working (dead battery, dead internet, whatever) you're screwed.

Why did no one ask what happens when the lock loses power? Unless something has changed significantly when they lose power they fail safe, which leaves the door unlocked.

What happens if battery is depleted?
There should be a TH-cam channel seeing issues with these types of locks (checks LockPickingLawer...)
LockPickingLawyer has annihilated all of these. I don't think he's ever recommended a smart lock or thumb print lock.
