Honestly, I didn't either until I had to replace one for the first time. I was shocked to see how many individual moving parts were involved in such a seemingly simple device.
This is actually one of the simplest models. Look up mortise lock. That is even more complex, mostly used in commercial settings. I know because I’m a Locksmith.
Jared, this saved my ass. I had taken my doorknob off to work on something, and the cage popped open (clearly had been messed with in the past) and everything came apart. I didn't want to buy a new knob because I rent and didn't want my landlord to notice. I had tried unsuccessfully to put it back together but couldn't figure out how to orient the cam drive units with the transmission plate. Your animation made everything click and I got it back together minutes later. I even managed to get it to work better because, like I said, a previous tenant must have messed with it and the knob would stick a lot. Because of your explanation I realized part of the transmission plate (which was slightly bent) was bumping against the cage. Seriously, you took something I couldn't understand and made it easily understood in under 5 minutes. Great job.
This one took about 2 months - there was lots of research and I only have limited time in the evenings. This video was super fun to make so it's all worth it!
The earliest I remember wondering this was when i was 4 years old. It is a question that has plagued me for years and years (and I really wanted to take them apart but I thought "people won't be able to get through doors"). This video has instilled in me a sense of childlike joy
Holy flip, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I'm not even kidding, I accidentally locked myself in a room with the door handles (and therefore also the spindle piece) taken out, because I thought the door would just open back up or something if I pulled on it. I know shutting the door in the first place was probably a bit of a moronic move, but this video was ACTUALLY a legitimate lifesaver for me, because I seriously couldn't have gotten out, otherwise. You are absolutely amazing. Thank you so much for this!!
This was the video I didn’t know I needed. I’ve disassembled plenty of door handles, but now I know how and why everything happens! Keep it up! Amazing work! 10/10
I swear...I just locked myself in my room after only installing the "latch" piece in the middle with no knobs and of course after closing the door to see if the "bevel" was facing the right way. This showed me how a door lock mechanism works so I learned how it must be manipulated with no knobs.. new vocab words in "" Thanks Jared guy.
Seeing the montrosity of the things inside the handle made me already give up on trying to understand, but once you assured me of showing one piece at a time and clearly showed their function and purpose individually, while gradually showing how the "chain reaction" works, it all made sense. Perfect!
It's fascinating that this design hasn't changed much in a long time. This helped me fix my broken bathroom doorknob, the springs weren't retaining as they should be, and shaft was warped, not bad for a 12 year old knob but it had to go.
Superb animation, well-done! I especially love that you named all the parts, as that it makes it easy for me to describe a problem to a support desk. Instead of, "Well the problem is in the cylindrical thingie that moves when the doodad is turned," I can correctly say, "the problem seems to be in the latch assembly because the cam drive units aren't moving smoothly, but the handles with the rosettes work fine." Thank you!
I'm very impressed with this video. For someone who knows nothing about door handles, I know have some knowledge. I appreciate the time put into the animation and the down-to-earth explanation. Well done.
I had this weird thought when I was trying to sleep a few weeks ago. I wondered how door handles worked. I tried thinking for myself how they work but couldn’t quite do it. I couldn’t let go of this thought, I thought about it everyday. I tried thinking of different ways it could work but I came up with none, I couldn’t wrap my head around the concept of a door handle. It drove me sick. I couldn’t sleep anymore. Whenever I closed my eyes, all I saw was a door handle. It taunted me. Taunted me for not knowing how it worked. It ruined my life. I couldn’t do anything anymore, not even the simplest of task. I was slowly going insane, and I knew it. Doors became an obstacle in my everyday life, I no longer even saw the doors, only the door handles. And they were taunting me. I couldn’t take it anymore. I was on the verge of a break down. That’s why I came here, to finally get the answer. To get the key back to my sane life. And I can tell you, it saved my life. It really did. I don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for this video. I’m a recovering door handle addict, and this is my story.
I rarely comment or like any video but this One i couldn't resist myself commenting and liking. You deserve it. So much hard work done by you can be seen in this video
Those door locks suck. All it takes is a long fingernail and putting it into that outer lock area. Bam. Door unlocked I had one of those locks on my bathroom door, and my siblings always unlocked the door when I was taking a poop

The animation in this video is amazing. I really needed to see how a door handle worked for a project I am working on and this was by far the best thing for comprehension. I am subscribing and hope to see more Mr. Owen. Good job and thank you!
Hey, I am working in ironmongery industry for the past couple of months, Now you 've clarified a few of my doubts. U 've done a great job. Keep on updating videos like this.
Wow! What a brilliant way to explain something that we use in our houses hundreds, if not thousands of times a day, but quite likely don't have a clue as to how that "thing" works. Thank you.
Those door locks suck. All it takes is a long fingernail and putting it into that outer lock area. Bam. Door unlocked I had one of those locks on my bathroom door, and my siblings always unlocked the door when I was taking a poop
I really needed to pee but i was stuck in my room. Videos about fixing jammed door latch all weren't helpful, because they were all showcasing it from the outside of the room or had the wrong lock type. This video was exactly what mine looked like so it helped a lot in figuring out what I'm dealing with. I'm finally free and don't have to pee in a bottle in my room. Thank you so much.
I haven't seen handles like that. In Northern Europe at least we have tall replaceable handle mechanisms which hold the springs inside them. Would love to see a video on these.
U saved my life if it wasn’t for this video … my kids and I got trapped in our bedroom due to a defective door knob. My kids often watch your videos and my youngest gave me the idea to watch your video on how door knobs work! We were able to dismantle it and was out of the room. TYSM!
Great video, detailed explanation, and nice animation. But, what about spherical handle that have a push button lock? Is the lock has the same mechanism? Thank you
I accidentally "locked" myself in a room by closing a door that had the handle removed (d'oh!), and was able to get it open again thanks to this video. Saved my life! Amazing explanation, thank you so much!
So I got locked into my own room because something broke in my doorknob causing it to stay locked, because of this video I was able to disassemble the doorknob and remove it’s insides. This was very helpful. Thank you!
This was very useful. Most videos just give you the most simple reasons a door won’t latch. And though I already knew that it was probably the spring causing my latch failing to return, I can check the cam and driver to make sure they aren’t worn or broken.
Today, I got locked inside my bedroom when rotating the handle would not pull the latch. It was 5 am. I was on 22nd floor apartment, alone in the house, main door with safety door locked from inside. I watched this video on TH-cam to learn the concept. Luckily, i could open the screws around the rosette using some household item because there was no screwdriver in the bedroom. I realised that the actual assembly was exactly as part the video. Unfortunately, the cage of cam was too concealed and too strong to open the latch. I realised after tinkering the assembly that the square spindle was loose and towards outside, so i pulled it back in, refixed the rosette around the spindle properly. Then I turned the handle holding the rosette. The latch opened and i finally rescued myself out. Thanks a lot. Without this video, it would be impossible to come out of this ordeal myself
It makes me laugh to see "thumbs down" and negative comments on such excellent work. These are great examples of why we should not take negativity personally. Phenomenal work, @Jared Owen. Thank you for your time and efforts.

Yes I agree I’m stranded with a non working latch I really appreciate this video!!!👍👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏

Could you do a European door handle
My thoughts exactly.
What wrong?
It’s the same mechanic it’s just has a turning knob
No the lock is so much different in EU doors
The old versions with handles have a very different lock
The new knob versions work the same way as American doors

joseph jackson I have short finger nails and I can still unlock locked doors in my house
My locks are just small holes and if you stick andything small and skinny in them it unlocks so we would get skewers and burst into others rooms
They’re done on purpose like this, in case of emergency you can still enter inside
All of our house doors have keys exept the bathroom ones they have that lock where everyone bursts in
I see them pretty often in public bathrooms. I can just press my finger into it hard enough and move it around in a circle, and the latch turns too.
