Just to perfect the art of completing a series of levels in the most competitively tightened time as possible. Shave a few miliseconds off? That is a cake walk. But to shave off over 2-3 even 4 - 5 seconds? Watch as they shit their collective pants bitching. When in fact they're just jealous it wasn't them that found it first.

    I do think Japanese and U.S. cartridge times for GE should have been separated, as the two games are in fact different, just as emulation is generally banned in all console communities. I also strongly advocated that PAL and NTSC should have had separate charts in MK64, though neither of what I stated ended up happening in the long run in either community. All other strategies in this video are otherwise accessible to anyone with a U.S. NTSC cartridge (and a second controller, which is nearly everyone.) Dealing with change is hard, but ultimately inevitable.

    • @DavidWonn
      @DavidWonn 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The slower inputs essentially turn the PAL version of MK64 into "easy mode" for mini-turbos. While there is a conversion factor to translate PAL times to NTSC and vice-versa, you also run into the rounding errors where certain exact times are unachievable on one platform. It just opens up its own can of worms by integrating the two regions.
      The original site admin did so because he was concerned there wouldn’t be as much interest if they were separated. This may have made sense for the early days, but now that the game has been around for decades, separating would make more sense (not that I’m active anymore anyway.)

    • @enosunim
      @enosunim 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The idea of separating games is only for leaving current world record holders in place. Not for any real profit. As time shows, everyone just switch to japanese versions. And if saparated it would be the same. Those who in the top of US version would be there, yes, but everybody will do the japan version, 'cause it is faster.
      For example battletoads. The japan version is much easier, but no one speedrun that, as there also a lot of bugfixes. So what the difference? For someone to be the "top"? Well, their records are still there. No one remove them.

    • @keysersozee6513
      @keysersozee6513 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@enosunim Thats not true at all. If you separate them its not going to make someone choose a different version because they can do it faster. If the records are not counted the same. They will choose the one that is most familiar to them because they can still do WR on them without sacrificing a language barrier, and without worrying about someone using a different version that moves through the game quicker than the original beating your time. The fact they are allowing different versions onto original games WR is BS because they cant accomplish that record on the original version which doesnt make any sense to even count it as a WR unless its standing on its own.

    I've honestly always believed that different versions of a game should have different leaderboards. If a game is faster in Japanese, then there should be separate JAP and ENG boards.
    If the PAL and NTSC carts change items and levels, then why are they considered the same? They're clearly different, and it's a boldfaced lie to claim otherwise. If a game is run on a specific patch to circumvent the developers patching out your useful glitches, then it should be it's own unique category.
    This would allow for more run diversity, and that's a good thing. It leaves more space open for different runners, which will draw in more people and increase the odds of something silly or incredible being found.
    As it sits, if you want to run something like OoT, you need a Japanese cart to even be playing the same sport as the top rankers. It's silly that you can save minutes by playing a game in a different language and everyone just shrugs and says "that's how things are"

    • @CaptianSwan

      The more you split games and the more rules there are the fewer people there are going to be in each category and the harder it will be for new players/viewers to engage with the community. You need to strike a balance in order for the community to remain healthy.

      @@CaptianSwan A year later, my opinion hasn't really changed.
      I get that you don't want 30 categories for a game with like, 12 runners, but for games like OoT, you could afford to double the categories and not worry over it. Plus, with more categories, you get more world records people will push, trying to get their name at the top of the list.

      @@CaptianSwan Well, if a player is going to join a diverse speedrunning community--such as Super Mario N64--then they really only need to worry about the category/categories they plan to compete in. Any players who leave one category will be replaced by rising competitors who wish to focus on that category, especially for popular games. Allowing for various categories actually improves accessibility by letting people zero in on a category they may be more specialized or interested in and allowing for the use of different regional versions. This encourages new players to compete who may otherwise have not and also would allow players who have an inferior version of a game to continue competing without feeling threatened by a superior version. Although, if versions are separated into categories, it would still probably be good to have a broad category encompassing all of them, since there would undoubtedly be people who prefer that.

Its the nature of things, and by writing every thing a player did to beat you that you yourself didn’t or couldn’t do as cheating just comes across as childish while they argue it is to protect the way the game “should be played” which is pretentious and lacks any self awareness.

    Cruise Control: Eh its legit. It's Pseudo 1.2 and as you mention people went to 1.2 anyways and with how bad the N64 controller was was for joystick durability and getting progressively worse and worse dead zones, it saves money if just needing to go side to side
    NTSC JP: Really we have so many games where region differences result in different versions being superior than others. If it's Japanese text being faster or other games having more differences between them. If they wanted a separate leader board for NTSC JP then they'd have to split off NTSC US and PAL into their own boards too which would cause chaos within the community.
    2.2 Controls: Kind of a weird area with the taping together and stuff but really it could became a hardware barrier for new runners who don't have two controllers.
    Look Down: It's legit, as lag management is a huge thing in a lot of games. This time it just looks a lot weirder than most.

    Do I consider the following cheating:
    CC: No. This is manual setting for the game in an unmodified controller. The only time I think this would be cheating is if it was specifically and explicitly not allowed for a particular competition or leaderboard.
    Japanese body armor: I think that the response here is pretty obvious, it should be on a separate leaderboard since there is a stark advantage. Japanese players could still submit for the leaderboard without body armor, but only if they didn't pick up the armor that wasn't available to other players in the course of their run.
    2nd controller: I think this should be allowed since it's universally available and I'm pretty sure most consoles shipped with 2 controllers back in the day. The key I would think, is to make sure everyone knows about the technique as a matter of common knowledge.
    Rubberbands: I think the ruling made is probably the best option, yes it's hardware modification/tool assistance and that's definitely not cool, but it's also something that regulating for would be near impossible to do and advantage it gives isn't something you couldn't technically do with a toe if you were flexible enough, and that's still a manual input of sorts. Plus maybe someone has a really long sixth finger, are we going to ban them from using it to hold that? I know that's absurd but it kind of draws out how absurd freaking out over the simple adjustment is.
    Lookdown: I think this is fine as long as it's accepted as per the category.

    It really is a testament to your ability to present and explain your videos in such high quality that even someone like me who hasn't even played the games you cover watches them. Came for the Doom stuff and stayed for the entertainment.

    I used to play golden eye when I was a kid I’m loving watching this old game makes me feel nostalgic and that’s why I just subbed Good luck keeping the monetization. BTW I used CC sometimes when I was a kid not for speed running but just because my controllers joystick was worn out and loose

    Some constructive criticism: I wouldn't mind if you did away with the obvious clickbait in the titles/thumbnails. Your content is pretty good and I feel it can stand on its own without it. I keep considering not clicking for that simple fact alone.

      Same, I refuse to support people who clickbait most of the time, but in rare cases like this the content is actually really enjoyable

      Glad you like the content. The strategies I'm using at the moment appear to be working. I have gained over 20k subs and millions of views in the previous month. Sorry if you choose not to click it but I'll continue doing it unless it stops working. I'm not entirely sure why people get upset at the title when at the end of the day the video is all that matters.

      I mean, the thumbnail shows a Japanese cart, which was considered for banning... So is it really clickbait

      None of my titles or thumbnails are ever misleading.

      That's fair. I respect that. And Anakin makes a good point, too. It's not false info. But it's more the ambiguous title/arrows in the thumbnail that bug me. At the end of the day it's hard to argue with effectiveness. In regards to mjc's comment, I felt like I was pretty respectful about it. So I don't get what he means with me crying about it.

    I love this! Although I do not understand why records on different versions of a game aren't considered seperate? If there are differences in the levels they should be considered different games more or less.

    Hearing rubber bands described as "controller modifications" and "TAS tools" is so funny to me. Like yeah, I s'pose they fit the literal definition, it's just odd to see a very technical term normally used when describing dedicated cheating devices instead being applied to a trivial household object.

      my thought is, how is it different (or worse) than someone having more keen reflexes and faster hand movements. one of them is completely based on your biology and some external factors, the other is something you can do in 3 seconds

    Why do speedrunners in forums seem to get upset when someone is using a strat in secret that they themselves have discovered or is not commonly known? It's pretty cheap and petty to call it cheating just because they didn't come up with it themselves. This is a competition - not an everybody get's a participation medal day. If a boxer is on a special diet/training programme they don't have an obligation to share it with everyone. Good lord.
