This is a good explanation of a wonky log cabin block. I also have an arc ruler and have never used it to cut fabrics. I will now use it for a 8” square, thanks for that tip. ❤
I bought mine specifically because it's 8 inches! Never intended to use it for arcs!

I found this when searching for something else -- ahh, the endless rabbit hole of TH-cam! BEAUTIFUL block, and I'm already thinking 1. I have way more KF fabrics than I'd need for a whole quilt of these beauties, and 2. some of KF black-and-white fabric for sashing would be perfect. Thank you!!

Hi Aj, Hello from Brookings!! I LOVE this block and your tutorial for this and for the bag; it gave me an idea about using a wonky block to be a part of a wine bag!! :D Now if I just had more KF fabric!! I did just join a club that I think I found the link for on or near one of your blog pages and just got my first delivery of 5 1/2 yards! Oh, I ordered 5 yards of KF's Orchids for the back of a quilt with KF fabric, but I love it SO much, I'm going to do a One Block Wonder with it. :D Signed - another profanity using KF loving quilter! Thanks for the inspiration.
Uh oh! You're in trouble now! Once you start buying KF fabric, you can't stop! you can use these wonky blocks in anything! I've even made an entire quilt from them.
I use Pellon sf 101(sale priced, instead of the now $$ muslim) by cutting the pellon by square, triangular or other shape then stitching crumb fabric or orphan blocks to the adhesive side...I do not press until the pellon shape is overcovered with fabric...then I press and square up. The pellon takes the place of light batting for a summer quilt....and also hides the many seams of the crazy patch ....the pellon is flexible and lighweight to stitch the blocks together and then I add the backing fabric and binding.

Ann, I love these blocks, but why use the foundation fabric?
I used the foundation fabric on this one because I was going to sew this into a drawstring bag and I wanted a little more structure. I did another video making these blocks without the muslin foundation. both ways work well. th-cam.com/video/ExcqzlLsMNY/w-d-xo.html

Thant you for that usefull clear tutorial. I would like to know to which projects do you choose to use muslin to make those beautiful squares and on which you don’t.
If I was making these blocks for a quilt, I would NOT use the muslin backing. If I was making this block to build into a bag, I would use the muslin. It's all a personal choice. You don't have to use the muslin at all. I just like a little more structure and strength if something will be part of a bag.

I do much the same but sew unto batting instead of cotton. Then add the backing and quilt...
could you not also offset centre piece for the wonky effect?

Why use a muslin carrier for the strips? Is it just for stability?
You can certainly make this block with or without the muslin. But I was making this for my drawstring knitting project bag and this block serves as one side of the zipper pocket, so the muslin adds stability for that function. I made a quilt with blocks like this out of batiks and I didn't use the muslin backing. No need to if you're making these blocks for a quilt. It would just add unnecessary bulk and not much function.

Yes. All of it.
Why if all the is covered, why cut it down to 8 inches
I cut it down so it's all square. I don't enjoy precise sewing so it's more fun for me to make it a little bigger then square it up more precisely.
I like the technic, i like your block. But why did you sew 9" and cut it down. Why didn´t you sew 8" from the beginn? May be to make it wonky? It was already wonky:
I get a more precise 8 inch block if I trim it down. Plus, I don't have to sew precisely if I'm going to square it up. I don't enjoy all that precision piecing. So I like making it wonky and then trimming it square. Just more fun for me.

Muslin
when you add the next piece on top and there is excess below because it is at an angle,do you cut off the excess underneath? if so,should you sew the pieces end to end?
I trim off as much as I can because it can get bulky.
What is plink?
Plink is the name of a fabric design.
Although I managed this I had to keep pausing to check what colour of material you had used next so as I knew where to go next. I know you said ‘clockwise’ but I kept getting lost even though I know what clockwise means! 😊 You move them around too quickly for me and I lose track! is there another tip I could follow perhaps? Thanks.
