  • How hard is it to run games at 21:9 ultrawide resolutions like 3440x1440 or 2560x1080? How does performance compare with standard resolutions like 1080p, 1440p, and 4K? This video should be helpful to anyone who has an ultrawide monitor and is trying to decide which GPU to buy for ultrawide gaming since most GPU reviews don't cover ultrawide performance. This could also help people considering buying an ultrawide monitor to decide whether their GPU is up for the job. In this video I explain the number of pixels involved at each resolution to show how to predict gaming performance when reviews only tell you standard resolutions. I also compare these predicted results with actual Ultrawide gaming benchmarks on my RTX 2070 in Red Dead Redemption 2 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider, so we can see if they line up.
    Chapters:

    0:25 How many pixels?
    2:26 What does the number of pixels tell us? (graph)
    3:22 Actual game benchmarks

    6:40 Other thoughts on using review benchmarks
    7:02 Is upgrading to ultrawide worth it?
    7:29 Thanks!

    A while ago bought an ultrawide monitor 1440p and I knew already it will cost some more GPU power, but how much. It seems different from game to game. Sometimes I use ultrawide 1080p with FSR and that works very good so far. But watching benchmarks from games does not give me that info I want. I also calculated the difference in % and used that on benchmark results to give me some hint about where I can land in fps for those games tested. Btw, very good video and good explanation around these resolutions compared.

    Thanks for the Clear and concise way to look at things.
    I was overthinking (to be honest) before pulling the trigger on an ultrawide
    Advtange to dragging feet (didn;t really give into FOMO) is that the prices have dropped nicely on the monitors, and there are more powerful (though still not super cheap) GPU upgrade options.

    I do think ultrawide has an element of being harder on the cpu just because it's handling more physics and objects on screen at once than 16:9 typically does. I usually always go by your suggestions though for sure when I'm looking at benchmarks for new games. Edit: I'd be interested in seeing a video with a custom resolution set that matches the same pixel count as 1080p but at an aspect ratio of 21:9 and see what the differences are if that's even possible

    • @danielowentech
      @danielowentech  3 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Yeah, but in most AAA games at high graphics settings and resolutions, I think people are usually going to be bound by their GPU. I'm almost never CPU bottlenecked unless I'm playing an esports title where I'm turning down settings to try to max framerate. Granted, it depends on your CPU and GPU combo. People sticking a 3080 on an i5 from 8 years ago will certainly need to be a bit more worried about their CPU being the limiting factor.

    • @null643

      Depending on game and it's optimizations, physics are handled off screen as well. Like if you throw a grenade then turn 180, the grenade will do its thing, if physics wouldn't be handled off screen, the grenade would freeze and be stuck in air, not a good thing.

      Funny, I have a couple of 1920x1200 because the extra page length helps work (I used to use 1600x1200 res)
      The UWHD isn't something I have tried, but with my largest monitor close it pushes the angular limit, so larger would be further back. Without young eyes anymore, I am a bit sceptical of higher resolution, it just means zooming in on documents.

      @@danielowentech well, ever since I bought my Predator X35P I haven't had any issues with the games I played, that includes Battelfield 3, 4, 1, and 5, Doom Ethernal, Red Death Redemption 2, Horizon Zero Dawn2 , Tomb Rider: Raise of the Tomb Raider & Shadow of the tomb Raider , Cyberpunk 2077, Mass Effect Andromeda, Dragon Age Inquisition, Arma 3. Maybe just in one or two games, when you are in the menu of the game it goes back to 16:9, but no issues at all when playing... I have no idea what's like when playing some main stream titles like Fortnite, Call of Dutty warzone or Counter Strike, etc... but I personally think that UW monitor owners usually go for a more High-end(-ish) hardware and triple-A games, wich are usually far more well finished.

  • @sage11x
    @sage11x ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I feel like I ended up with the best of both worlds (for me). 1440p 16:9 32" -- same pixel density as a 1080p 24" but a lot more screen real estate. When I game I typically run 2560x1080 custom resolution. This gets me the same image height as my old 24" 1080p gaming monitor but more peripheral vision and easier to drive. Basically it's now a 29" 1080p ultrawide but my 32" monitor has much better motion handling and refresh rate and is actually *cheaper* than the majority of small ultrawides which are generally pretty crap va panels (Gigabyte M32Q 165Hz fast ips-- fantastic monitor). I really like a BIG screen for general computing and work but find 32" too big for games.

It has around 92ppi about the same as a 24 inch 1080 monitor but with added real estate. A 34 inch 1440 would be to big for my desk and my NVIDIA 3060 ti handles it pretty well. My Hitman game averages 125 fps and I love the added length for making videos in my editor.

      something is wrong with your rdr2 test ... ultra wiede 1440p is more demanding than 4k ... look up some other tests with the RTX4090 and you will see that 4k has in general more fps than 3440X1440.

    most games have widescreen fixes and even if not, you can edit the hex values yourself so if you mess with it it is not hard... most people just don't understand tech well... You can run Manhunt 1 with all the HUD etc correct with thirteenag fix in 5 minutes, and that is a game from 2003.

    Had an ultrawide since 2020 and came from a 27" 1440p monitor honestly there wasnt much of a big jump in resolution, I feel as if the DPI is the exact same and i didnt gain that much screen real estate. And even in 2023 there are still recently released games that do not support ultrawide Elden Ring for example. Looking at a 4K 32" for my next monitor.

    man I am so torn right now. about to build a new PC with a 6700 XT but I can't decide between an ultrawide or the Odyssey G7. As you know, the support in games for ultrawide is very little. I mean sure, for the AAA games the support is there but a lot of the games I like to follow probably won't support such resolutions since their budget is more defined. Indie games and such. I really don't want to look at black bars on the sides or have the picture stretched out.

    I only lose 10-15 fps going from 1440p to 1440p ultrawide. It's much easier to run than 4k, and with DLSS/ FSR, you can get even more frames to make up those lost 10-15 fps. 3440x1440 is the sweet spot for PC gaming and gives the best performance per $ compared to 4k. I'm confused as to why more PC gamers have not adopted 3440x1440 yet and instead opt for 4k with less pictur on the screen for almost double the cost. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • @TerraWare

    I thought about getting an ultra wide a little while back and it just didn't really appeal to me. I've been gaming on a 32" 2560 x 1440p 165hz display on a Ryzen 9 5900X/RX 6800XT/ 32 GB 3600mhz CL16 system and I find it to be just perfect for my tastes. Of course a bigger monitor at 4K would look nicer but it'll require more powerful hardware to run games at high fps. 1440P is the perfect medium imo. The G spot!

    • @danielowentech
      @danielowentech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I think 4K is still just too demanding. Even cards like a 3080/3090 can struggle a bit with maxed out 4K. My 2070 doesn't have a chance (as evidenced in the benchmarks in this video lol). Ultrawide can be amazing when games support it (and if your GPU can hand it), but there are many games that have limited or no support, so it certainly isn't a worry free "upgrade". It is a mixed bad. I like mine, but it can be annoying at times as well.

    Eventually DLSS and FSR is gonna get so good and widely spread that 8K ultra-wide might become a standard on monitors and to be honest you don't lose anything when 21:9 can still run 16:9 using black bars. Or maybe just cheap VR glasses could replace monitors as they are cheaper to build and would offer better entry level prices with the extra of having 3D capability as optional.
