My grandparents were from Aragona, Sicilia. They came to the US in the 20s. They had zero money and zero English. They fled extreme poverty and local mafia magnates. My grandfather went on to start and own his own shoe and shoe repair business. They had a bunch of kids and became very successful. He always missed Sicilia but rarely spoke of it. One time he let it slip as an old man and said “It hurts too much.” Even after all his success and living in the US for nearly 70 years, that small village of goat herders thousands miles away brought out deep pangs of longing. Who knows what he was really feeling. The fantasy of a memory? Regret for not settling something with someone in his family before he left and never saw them again? What the beautiful island he loved might have been if not for the mafia? I’ll never know. But music and scenes like this always make me think of him and how ballsy he was. He was a hard man to get along with, but I grew to respect him as I got older. He had “the life” many people want but never get. But something big inside was never quite settled with him. I don’t know why I’m writing all this. Thanks for listening.
