Many people that don't play the piano may not realize how excruciatingly difficult it is to play Mozart. You have to balance delicacy with classical majesty yet keep it within Mozart's rather narrow emotional boundaries. Here we have someone so skilled it almost defies comprehension. The pearl like consistency of her trills and runs boggles the mind after you try this yourself. I believe this is how Mozart envisioned this to be played. Not an anemic, whimpy style that so many approach it with. Mozart had power but it was so tightly controlled and monitored. Surely Mozart has driven more pianists to madness than any other composer. Yet here Ms Son effortlessly lets the piano sing to its heart's content. This is a performance that has few rivals. True best-in-the-world playing.

Music from a great Austrian composer, a Russian music competition, a South Korean pianist, a Russian orchestra with a wonderful Russian conductor Mr. A. Utkin, a grand piano made either in Germany or the USA .. And comments pouring from all over the world.. Music really unites all. The world is one!

Since I have heard HER i cannot hear ANY other Pianist play this. You always can hear EVERY SINGLE tone even if all sounds like a cascade of sparkling water with little diamonds.
The pianist, the orchestra, and the conductor, are all a joy to listen to. A very pure sound. Don't get to hear that too often. One "thumbs up" is not adequate enough.
The audience often doesn't appreciate an orchestra that supports the performer yet never calls much attention to itself. It's a fine line a conductor tries to walk along and it's very difficult to get it so right like we see here. Everything came together.

I do agree with you that our world needs this, no question about it! Classical Music as a broader term can reach so many deep unexplored places in the human mind, heart, and soul, and heal almost any inner pain from which our souls suffer all too often...
I am a performer major and professional. Mozart can stand alone. What makes the difference is what one does "TO or WITH" his music. This performance with the young pianist, Yeol Eum Son, got the essence, tone and articulation of the Concerto No. 21, which I love. It sends me into a 'seventh heaven'. Wonderful! Congrats Yeol Eum Son.
I just discovered this performer and performance last night. Don't know how I missed her. I started piano in the 1950s and studied the classics and have taught piano. I've even had Korean students who lived near me. These days, especially with TH-cam, we're amazed with the technical skill of young Orientals/Far Eastern Asians. We've seen them completely immersed in demanding compositions. My experience, not to be charged with pc insensivity, is that while the brilliance, quick learning, technical skill is laudable, they very often fall short on personal interpretation. They stick to the dynamics on the page. Last evening, I was held captive by Yeol Eum as she took me to heights no other Asian has. I told my wife, if this were only audio, I might wonder if this was a recording of Artur Rubenstein. And if that's not enough, her showmanship, mastery over hand and finger positions only elevated the performance for me. I can't remember when I was so taken in by a classical pianist.
Maybe I read too much into it, but I can't help but hear a hint of unjust racism there. In absolutely every culture and country, there are lots of musicians who play only technically, "falling short on personal interpretation". You'll find them even at the most prestigious conservatories around the world. You'll find them in Russia, in Germany, in England, in America. Years of rigorous training can lead to a brilliant technique that occasionally covers for this lack of true talent or pure love of music, free of ulterior motives. That you may encounter more of them who are Asian is simply because there are more Asian young people who learn music, taking the ratio to the number of the population, and because learning music (and the most competitive instruments in particular- piano and violin) is big in far-east Asian culture. I don't think classical music belongs to one people or another, the same way that a jazz musician from the Netherlands, for example, would never consider himself an outsider to the genre or feel he needs to prove himself. If you grow up learning it and listening to it from a very young age, it's yours. Given real talent, if you have access to good teachers, the right training and the right environment, you have the chance to become a wonderful classical musician. It is only a problem of resources, which have simply always been more available in Europe, considering it is where the tradition was born, but which are becoming more and more available in other countries. Lots of incredible Asian musicians don't have to leave their countries anymore to get a first class education. The same was true for America in the late 19th century. Americans did consider themselves "outsiders" at some point, simply inferior to European classical musicians, but this is no longer the case.
Nah...Rubenstein was the master. He could push a full orchestra into the background. He played so forcefully he was forever breaking pianos. Literally shattering hammers and strings. But Yeol Eum is very, very good. It's her technique and styling that carries the day. By the way, the north Koreans produce some very fine musicians as well. They have some wonderful orchestras.
Stunning , dazzling technique ! Incredible emotional mastery ! I fell under the spell of Yeol Eum Son ! She is probably one of the best pianist in the world ! Great artist !
It’s almost alien, her ability to recall and play perfectly from memory such a vast pianic warzone of emotion, intention, style, and musical measures of a complexity that few will ever dream to reproduce, astounding and beautiful.
She doesn't need to remember notes it looks like she feels each and every one. It's like trying to remember the first time you fell in love. You remember how you felt not the actions that took place.❤ she's amazing
Yesterday I was listening to an interview with Clifford Curzon, one of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. He said that this concerto and the middle movement is one of the most beautiful pieces of music every written
I was noticing how young many of the orchestra musicians are, and yet every part is played flawlessly. This performance is now one of my favorites of this piece of music.
I have always liked this concerto, it actually started me on listening to Mozart regularly. But this is beyoond all comprehension - the fingers fly on the keys and yet there is the impression that each note is carefully crafted by the piamist. A treasure.
One cannot but smile when hearing Mozart. One of the greatest gifts to mankind. His music will last for ever because it goes to the very essence of what human beings are.
From every aspect of classical composition and rendition this is the most exquisite I have ever heard in my 82 years. Wonderful piano playing and accompaniment brought out by a wonderful work of conducting. Pencil or baton is immaterial, this young conductor has immersed himself in the wonderful art of getting the best out of everyone on that stage. Congratulations to him first and foremost, and to the soloists and all the instrumentalists, who have lived up to his highest hopes. I truly thank God for music like this. It is the very music of heaven.
This is the kind of music that melts the hardest of hearts and brings tears to our eyes. There is so much beauty in this piece that makes words futile.
I don't have a trained classical ear or anything like that, can't pick up on the subtle nuisances like a lot of classical fans can. But there's something about this performance that keeps bring me back to this video, she was amazing
Wow!!! A lady with passion. She puts her soul into her performance. Wonderful lively performance, just as Mozart intended it to be played. You deserve all the applause you can get.
I checked out Clara and the other lady Wanda who play Mozart but they play too feminine. This Korean lady plays aggressive and lively like you say and Mozart's playful voice and spirit clearly comes through.
What a wonderful gift to us mere mortals. She is beyond any words. I exhale in breathlessness at her touch, her consistency of tone, her entire presentation. Her grace and passion come through her skin and light up her flawless beauty with the light that Mozart lit so many years ago, a light that is as close to God as we are likely to come in this world.
I'm fifty two years old. A scientist and 'hard headed' engineer. I've just watched/listened to this for maybe the hundredth time and the tears are still streaming down my cheeks; Mozart in general, and this recording in particular, does this to me every time. For the most part, my family regards my reaction to Mozart's music with blank incomprehension and yet to me the emotions his music engenders are, quite literally, at the heart of what it means 'to be human'. What should I say to them?
Thank you for being so precise. Mozart his music is opening channels of listening and touch the heart and soul. Each note is be heard, in stillness and emotion. The power of this music makes it to listen, to flow with the music because it is every time different. The music lives, take the listener to be aware of every not, every change, every hidden language. The music is vibrant, ful of energy and in time full of silent moments. I love the music of Mozart, it opens me and makes me grateful for the perfect balance each moment. Thank you Mozart for your talent and gift to write this music as a legacy for everyone who love your music.
I am playing this over and over again. It seems impossible that this young woman can remember every single note AND -as Ernie Wise would say - ‘ play it in the right place ‘. This is surely piano playing to perfection. It is beautiful to listen to and it is a delight to watch her fingers caress the keyboard. Thank you so much for allowing us to enjoy this lovely piece of music being played by a very talented young musician. Ida.
The tone colour, clarity, sensitivity, interpretation and techniques.. everything is too perfect! Yeol Eum's performance is my favourite version of this Mozart concerto. Especially her clear sound quality... it's so good! her playing is love♡
When she moved her mouth as she played it was like she was kissing every note! Beautiful! What an exquisite and rare combination of technical mastery with profound musical insight, especially in one so young in years! I think I'm in love. We're going to hear much more from her from here on I have no doubt
I imagine her singing in her head. A few years ago, some grumpy stiffs were complaining about it, but I remember Glen Gould humming along as he played. And the concert-master of Collegeum 1704 who swings, like a jazz player, as she plays. That is players feeling their music.
What an fantastic performance! Yeol Eum Son puts her whole body and soul into her music, the magic flows out through her fingers. What a delight to watch and listen to this incredibly talented young lady.
yes, it is absolutely marvellous, my other favorite of this concerto is with Maria Joao Pires, considered one of the finest Mozart interpreters, very beautiful, soulful woman, mostly known in Europe, retired now. A very unique, intimate video with the other musicians. May you enjoy. th-cam.com/video/NMQXIH0FH-E/w-d-xo.html
Literally the second movement is a gift from the universe that came to us through Mozart, Mozart was a prodigy because his mission was to connect us with the infinite through his music
I love her face expressions. That's feeling the music. And the way she glides her fingers on the keys. Wow. I'm so glad I have found a way to get back to admiring classical music musicians, composers, all!
Antonios Mhtsanhs Have to agree with you. Looks like she was really ON that night. Performing in a competition, you never really know if you are going to have that special something on a given night. this is a very impressive performance
I have searched under every stone, book, and piece of furniture. Yet, I still cannot find a flaw in technique, interpretation, nor within the general emotional aspects which serve to grant a supreme ethereal complement to this performance. I have said it before, with Mitsuko Uchida doing the Mozart 9 (Jeunehomme) and my comment then was properly deemed a strong positive assessment: "She gives Mozart balls". I do not mean this in a trivial, pejorative sense. I mean it in a substantive, overpowering sense, one that witnesses my assessment of an extraordinary substance to a composer that I sometimes do not fully embrace. When it becomes necessary to treat Mozart delicately, Yeol Eum Son does. When it becomes necessary to perform some passages with a romantic flare and powerful passion, she does. It distills into something as simple as that. She is not intimidated, fearful, afraid of Mozart. Yeol Eum Son is not hesitant to attack this as it should be attacked. This is probably Mozart's very best Second Movement that he ever wrote and its performance is more than adequate. Overall, the performance is stunning and I do agree with many out there that it is probably the best on TH-cam for this '21'. - David Lyga
She's absolutely brilliant! The technique, the expressive phrasing and everything else about her performance are superb. ..and so is the conductor and the orchestra! Bravo!
In the early 1970's, Lentheric used the famous melody at the beginning of the 2nd movement to advertise Tweed perfume. I had not heard anything like it, although I was only 10 years old at the time, it enthralled me. 60 years on, the 2nd movement is still my favourite piece of music. So fragile, delicate and soothing. But in this, it is deceptive as it is astonishingly difficult to play. Such placid beauty alludes to compassion and love for humanity. Was this Mozart's message? We should strive to be compassionate and loving to all of humanity, even though it is not always easy to do so. Thank you Yeol Eum Son, so wonderfully played.

Beautiful playing you can tell everyone there put their heart and soul into playing Mozart's concerto no.21.
I can listen to her performance - especially the second part (15:00 to 21:47) - endlessly. She lives through her music. So authentic and purifying...
In daily life I sometimes forget the depth and beauty of Mozart. Then I hear someone like this playing him and I smile.
One cannot but smile when hearing Mozart. One of the greatest gifts to mankind. His music will last for ever because it goes to the very essence of what human beings are.
these musicians are absolutely beyond words... Extreme levels of talent and passion.
😂
This is Mozart at his finest IMO. The main piano melody is so easy to understand because it’s fundamentally perfect. That’s what this is.
At 81 years I concur. This rendition is over the top in so many ways. Bless the recording people as well .
She did play that one note slightly too hard.
I cannot imagine this piece being played any better.
Can be..by a piano professor from Vienna..little music secrets..make the difference🎶😎
Tina Rider I would love to hear that.
by any man obv
Mozart would have looked bored while playing this flawlessly...sadly.

Ive loved Mozart since grade school. Glory to Mozart and the piano!
Seeing anybody play the piano like that gives me butterflies. All of them play so beautifully.
This is the kind of music that melts the hardest of hearts and brings tears to our eyes. There is so much beauty in this piece that makes words futile.
The trouble is... when you hear a pianist this good. Then no other pianist will do. I want more please.
The best living interpreter of Mozart that I have heard.
I don't have a trained classical ear or anything like that, can't pick up on the subtle nuisances like a lot of classical fans can. But there's something about this performance that keeps bring me back to this video, she was amazing
me too...

Feeling soft sound!

Absolutely brilliant!!! Such passion! She put her heart and soul into the concerto
God does not exist.
so ,poetic words
Jessica Williams, you wrote some brilliant words! Absolutely immaculate! If only you left out that last sentence, it would have been perfect.

I also feel the same as you every time I listen to this. I've tried to find other recordings from my CD collection but I always get back to this.
Left your family
I experience similar emotions to Mozart and Beethoven ,usually the second movement of his concerto.I cry😢
I feel like crying, her passion gives me another reason to be alive.. ❤❤
She is so beautiful. And Mozart is a Rockstar in his time :-)
I am playing this over and over again. Ida.
top flight musicians know their music very, very well
If you really love a piece it starts to be part of your life such a dream or an idea, think that's why she need no sheets
She practices 40 hours a day, can't fail a single note.
Extraordinary performance, most talented pianist and superb orchestra. Mozart would have loved this.
How can people dislike this? This is the best.
This girl just made me appreciate classic music
Me too
Seriously? That's wonderful. Your "aha!" moment...
Not her, it's Mozarts music that made you...
Please Dont leave now, there's a vast ocean to fall in love in front of you.
Yup
The tone colour, clarity, sensitivity, interpretation and techniques.. everything is too perfect! Yeol Eum's performance is my favourite version of this Mozart concerto. Especially her clear sound quality... it's so good! her playing is love♡
Miss Eum Son + Steinway & Sons begets lovely music.
When she moved her mouth as she played it was like she was kissing every note! Beautiful! What an exquisite and rare combination of technical mastery with profound musical insight, especially in one so young in years! I think I'm in love. We're going to hear much more from her from here on I have no doubt
Miss Son is amazing, Mozart is wonderful composer universal and lived forever
She was deeply into this piece from the start. It's as if it's a meditation for her.
Ohh that's absolutely right I agree with you!!!
I imagine her singing in her head. A few years ago, some grumpy stiffs were complaining about it, but I remember Glen Gould humming along as he played. And the concert-master of Collegeum 1704 who swings, like a jazz player, as she plays. That is players feeling their music.

Russ sure, more than that
When Mozart's spirit heard this performance, he said "At last!"
What an fantastic performance! Yeol Eum Son puts her whole body and soul into her music, the magic flows out through her fingers. What a delight to watch and listen to this incredibly talented young lady.
Tim Detmers yes she does
Notes are crisp and clear with singing tones cascading refreshingly across the keyboard❤️
Bellisimooo ❤🎉🎉
I've heard many perform this piece and this is by far my favorite! The orchestra and Yeol Eum Son are both amazing!
yes, it is absolutely marvellous, my other favorite of this concerto is with Maria Joao Pires, considered one of the finest Mozart interpreters, very beautiful, soulful woman, mostly known in Europe, retired now. A very unique, intimate video with the other musicians. May you enjoy. th-cam.com/video/NMQXIH0FH-E/w-d-xo.html

Is this ‘the legendary’ mozart piano concerto no.21 performance?
I finally find it!
Ms. Son is absolutely amazing. The feeling, expressiveness, timing, Herr Mozart would be proud. She was truly in her special place. And she's cute!
Really..
She' s so delicate...the kind of person required when the subject is the One and Only....
Literally the second movement is a gift from the universe that came to us through Mozart, Mozart was a prodigy because his mission was to connect us with the infinite through his music
One of my favourite Piano Concertos, beautifully played and finely orchestrated. The young Lady has the sweetest touch.
This one of the beautiful things I’ve ever heard , it made me cry … wow wow wow
I love her face expressions. That's feeling the music. And the way she glides her fingers on the keys. Wow. I'm so glad I have found a way to get back to admiring classical music musicians, composers, all!

Antonios Mhtsanhs Totally agree. What a glorious transformation within a generation.
