- Hello everyone, I present to you a new... series of videos ?
Where I will be attempting to complete, using TAS, the True Jumpless Challenge in NSMBW !

Buuuuut... What's the True Jumpless Challenge (TJC) ?
The spirit of this challenge was to create a challenge that:
- is about not jumping
- is easily defined
- isn't trivial
Following these three principles, I came up with this definition :
In order to complete the TJC, you must beat the game, in any way, without:
- pressing 2
- pressing A
- using motion controls
These restrictions don't apply outside of levels.
ok, but why these restrictions ?
Well, let's take a look at what happens if you remove one of them:
if you allow pressing 2, you can beat the game normally by jumping. If you allow motion controls, it's the same with spinjumps but easier since you have access to the propeller and grabbing objects.
If you allow pressing A, then you can do an infinite height glitch by bubbling and popping with 2 characters, which trivializes this challenge.
If we apply these restrictions outside of levels, we get stuck trying to enter the first level. You need to press 2 to enter levels. But that's not interesting, and it's not in the spirit of the challenge, and I make the rules, so the restrictions don't apply outside levels.
Okay, now we have our rules, do we have a hope of beating the game this way now ? Well, unfortunately, I can already see that not having motion controls is a problem of it's own, because shaking is also used for controlling bubbles, and to activate things like screws in 8-Airship, that HAVE to be activated in order to complete the level.
Yeah, but that's not a shaking used to jump, like a spinjump would, so I don't think it's a game over either.
But now we're stretching the rules of the challenge, and I don't think I can make rules that stay simple, but still encapsulates this specific use of motion controls.
OKAY, but in terms of jumps, in the spirit of the challenge, do we have any hope of completing it following these rules, with maybe a few exceptions that don't break the challenge and that we'll try to limit as much as possible ?
Well, NOW the question isn't trivial ! And that's what I want to answer !
So, after more than 2000 characters defining the challenge, let's explain what happens in this level.

What happens, how did I do it ?
Our first obstacle, as any good mario games begins, is the first goomba.
This is already a pretty threatening obstacle.
Our only way of gaining height in this challenge is to pop out of bubbles or bounce on an enemy or player. But since we're on flat ground, bouncing on something isn't possible.
So we have to play in multiplayer, kill one of them, and pop the bubble (since A is banned, we can't bubble without dying). But since we don't have motion controls, the bubble spawns on the other side of the screen, and isn't fast enough to catch up to the goomba before it kills our other players.
Therefore, we do the coolest stupid trick that makes this challenge not fail at the first goomba: "When the music goes 'bah', slide under the goomba!"

Okay now we can make some progress, yellow toad continues through the level, unpops everyone and enters the pipe. In the subzone we do some head bouncing to get to the exit pipe. Now, we do stacked head bounces. A cool trick of this game is that if a player bounces on another one, and that other one was currently jumping or bouncing on something else, the player on top will get a huge vertical speed boost. This trick is used quite a lot in this challenge.
Next, we have some stairs, that we can climb by popping bubbles continually. we can then continue the level using all of the previous tricks. There aren't many other tricks in the rest of the level, so we can make our way to the end quite easily. At the end, we have to pop a bubble and head bounce juggle a player to the flagpole.
And with this team effort with all 4 players, I am able to beat this level Truly Jumpless.

I like the ground pound to stall and allow someone to walk on top of the head more. But the hop is pretty cool too because it's pretty exclusive to New Soup
Fun fact: This was actually the intended way to beat level 1. Nintendo play tested it and thought it was "too difficult" for Americans. So they added the "jumping" mechanic to make it easier.

I know that this is a TAS, but I like to imagine 4 people who are just really well coordinated praying that they time the koopa and goomba jumps correctly in order to beat the level in real time.
That’d be quite an entertaining challenge I’d think. Just simply trying to complete 1-1 with 4 people in real time…

@@ayaan9968 tool-assisted-speedrun. Basically the creator put together a bunch of inputs for this run. It isn’t a real time run, because the precision required for this run is humanly impossible to achieve.

This is ludicrous, but was probably fun to put together! I'm interested to see how many stages you can actually clear this way. The jumpless challenge that allows the A button is still fun RTA, since the infinite-height glitch isn't a reasonable option there.

@@cjnewman7550 Not necessarily a glitch, but an exploit that lets you gain infinite height with two players repeatedly bubbling and re-bubbling each other in mid-air! Extremely difficult RTA, but trivial for a TAS.

This is my favorite kind of videogame challenge, where it's such a perfect puzzle with so many options and parts to utilize, like shells and falling onto enemies and positioning characters to bounce on each other, but at the same time you know for absolute certain that this was never intended by any of the developers. It's such a tantalizing puzzle, but you have no idea if there's even a correct solution to it, which makes success that much more impressive!

The first few seconds with you sliding to the time of the music followed by Mario and Luigi doing a little turnaround dance are possibly the most satisfying thing I've ever seen.

Truly a moving, compelling video. In the process, they had to sacrifice their friends Mario and Blue Toad, and it played like a war drama film, but without weapons whilst taking place in a cheerful kingdom. Not only does it really convey a message about the struggles that we have faced (such as loss of loved ones to disease, and limited resources), but it tells us a heartwarming story of teamwork, love, and juggling. It pains me to see Luigi sacrifice himself (not to death, but to his fears of not being able to achieve anything without Mario). All and all, it's much better than today's movies, truly a hallmark of human dedication, and will soon be one of the most memorable treasures of human history and video gaming. You, my friend...have won the internet. You have won the world. We are all so proud of you. Thank you.

This is a pretty interesting challenge, and made 1-1 much mire interesting.
BTW, the description says that motion controls aren't allowed, but does that extend to tilting for platforms? 'Cause the final Bowser Castle doesn't seem possible without tilt controls.
I also talk about this in the description. I want to have a challenge that's easily defined, thus "no motion controls". Having exceptions like "except for tilting platforms or spinning screws" makes the challenge definition less pure. But at the same time, those uses of the motion controls don't break the idea of the challenge being a "no jump challenge". So I think I'll allow it but it's not satisfying, so I'll try to avoid it when I can.
@@adealtas I do see where you're coming from, and I suppose only using them when 100% necessary is a fair enough compromise (given that you can't get around them in certain levels).
@@adealtas instead of defining the challenge as “No A presses, no 2 presses, and no motion controls”, why don’t you define the challenge as “No jumps, no spin jumps, and no bubbling without dying”? That definition that still allows for bounces, allows for swimming, and being able to interact with certain gimmicks and picking up certain items, and also solves the issue of bubbling exploits without the cost of lives.
@@johnclark926 yes, but then you have to go through the task of defining rigorously what a jump is and what a spin jump is.
A jump can actually be: a jump, a double jump, a triple jump, a walljump, a pole jump. Also, you would need to explicitly ban propeller, and propeller blocks.
And still, there ARE difference, like as you said, you can't swim without 2, but that is in itself an interesting challenge. In the same vein, if you allow holding 2, you can get big bounces on enemies instead of just a small bounce, which is a very significant change.

I had no idea how different the death sounds were. They’re different for if you go out via screen scroll vs. going out via getting hit or falling into a pit. That is very interesting.

This is a super interesting challenge, but I have a question
at 1:15 (and iirc a couple other times) you did the higher bounce off of the other player. Does that not require using the jump button?
Nope ! As I explain in the description, if you bounce on a character that has bounced on something else, you get this even higher bounce !
