Wii Play (2006) had a great assortment of little games, each with a little gem of adaptive music, but none got as intricate as the final one, Tanks!, in which you battle with little toy tanks on a hardwood floor. Check out how much variety you can get out of a few measures of music and some clever game design parameters.
Special thanks to DavoGato and Wolfgang for helping me with this video!

The Google document linked in this comment goes over some inaccuracies with the chart I created in this video! Like ISaveNewspapers mentions in the document, I did research this video by ear, studying how the game's soundtrack changed as I played it over and over. I tried to corroborate my findings with other playthroughs listed online, but still this method wasn't immune to error, especially with so many possible permutations of enemy tank groups. So, thank you for writing this and correcting what I missed!

There is now probably a music composer out there who is now very happy that they have received some sort of recognition for their very hard work on a small game years ago.

According to google, Wii Play's soundtrack was composed by both Ryo Nagamatsu and Shinobu Nagata.
Now, I have no idea what one of them composed this track or if it was a combined effort.
If anyone knows, that'd be something I'd like to know.

Second example in the video is more obvious, where the 2 spaces North and South in 4:3 become 3 spaces in 16:9, literally squishing the whole playing field.

Man, I've put so much time into this game. My brothers and I would compete (and sometimes kill each other), and a couple of us also made pushes into the late game. I probably made it into the 80's and 90's half a dozen times, but I only ever beat level 100 once.
I can still hear the music, and the click of the green tank's missiles as they bounce off the wall to come get me. The death music, the next level music, the level up sound, mines activating....it's all burned into my head

I think what they had in mind was to turn the enemy tanks into “characters” that the player can feel more in touch with. It talks to our subconscious to give us a hint in what to expect from these foes with familiar musical language, adding to the actual gameplay. The composer definitely has a thing for games.

It's a very similar experience when playing the game, after you see the green tanks' absolute bullshit aimbot and ricochets, dying to them many times, and then slowly adapting to their shooting pattern, every time you see a new tank after that, it's terrifying.
I remember getting to stage 20 on 1 life, seeing the white tank disappear and just metaphorically shitting my pants. Luckily it was pretty easy by looking at the tank treads. I never got to the black tank haha

Nintendo is almost notorious for having very interesting music, as well as having the music being added in for other parts with many patterns for different stages, I first figured this out in a classic Wii Fit/U minigame called "Obstacle Cource" from many years ago, and each stage added a new part, but I never expected to see anything that took a very long time of thinking

Didn't expect to get a shot of wii nostalgia. This brought back so many old memories of playing with my sibling. Also I realize I must have gotten to a stage with green tanks because I remember hearing all the double plonks of the ricocheting rockets and also that I didn't make it very far past those levels because I never heard the themes of the more advanced tanks. Think it's kinda strange how my brain held onto the music and sound effects but not that much of the gameplay itself.

You can make an essay on even the simplest music though it not really the goal to be complex either, it’s very fitting for what it was made for and that’s the thing to appreciate. In fact, a lot of 2D animation these days uses 2D rigs. They don't work for heavy action, or for super detailed animation, but they work very well as time-savers for casual animation where characters are mostly standing and talking.

As a 2 year old in 2007, I remember when my father first got the Wii. We had Wii Sports only at that time, but it was my first exposure to video games, and of course the awesome Nintendo music. Once I became a 4-5 year old in 2009-2010, my father got Wii Play for us, and I got a chance to play some of the most nostalgic games for me ever, including the Tanks minigame. Honestly, that little 4 measure ditty has been stuck in my head for over 13 years now, and I swear I will NEVER forget it. It’s so genius, so simple, yet complex as well. The game’s mechanical and simplistic style and audio design are so cool and nostalgic for me, reminding me of the days I did multiplayer Tanks with my dad, only to fail at around level 4 each time. So yeah. This piece has a real connection to me, and actually earlier in 2021, I remembered the track during a nostalgia trip, and looked it up. I remembered that the audio would change based on what tanks were on the screen actually, and it was a really unique concept for me. Anyway, thanks for covering this game man, I absolutely love it, and honestly, it’s definitely genius.

I'm really impressed that this channel already has 346k subscribers, usually channels like this that are focused on niche topics especially music and sound theory have at most 50k subscribers, it's not all that surprising I suppose, these videos ooze with an unique style that's both minimalistic and bold at the same time that makes it easier to possess information on screen and keep your attention simultaneously. Fantastic work!

That was a sick video dude. I love how random but surprisingly complex this games music was. Maybe I never noticed because of how bad I was
