Recommended gear and when to use various sizes:
3" senko - drop shot rig, split shot rig (finesse spinning tackle, 6'6" medium light rod 10 lb braid, 6 lb fluorocarbon, size 1 finesse split shot hook)
4" - creeks, rivers, ponds (spinning tackle, 6' 6" medium light or medium rod, 10-15 lb braid, 6-8 lb mono or fluoro, texas rig - 2/0 ewg hook or wacky rig 1/0 finesse split shot hook)
5" - most versatile, effective in almost all scenarios (spinning or baitcasting tackle, 6'6" medium or medium heavy rod, 15-30 lb braid, 12-15 lb mono or fluoro, texas rig - 3/0 or 4/0 ewg hook or wacky rig - 2/0 finesse split shot hook)
6" - targeting bigger than average-size bass - good tournament bait for culling smaller bass (baitcasting tackle, 7' medium heavy rod, 30-40 lb braid, 15-20 lb mono or fluoro, texas rig - 5/0 ewg hook or wacky rig - 3/0 or 4/0 finesse split shot hook)
7" - targeting trophy size bass 5-15 lb HAWGS!!! (baitcasting tackle, 7' medium heavy or heavy rod, 30-50 lb braid, 20 lb mono or fluoro, texas rig - 6/0 or 7/0 ewg hook)
best knot - palomar
Effective in water temperatures 55 degrees and up
Ideal conditions - around vegetation, clear water
Where not to use the bait - muddy water
1rod1reel's go-to colors - stained water - black
lightly stained to clearish water - green pumpkin or green pumpkin magic
clear water - watermelon red or translucent colors
fun fact - Gary Yamamoto originally created the senko as a soft-plastic jerkbait like the zoom fluke or slug-go. Anglers quickly figured out that the senko was most effectively fished as a "do-nothing" bait and was accepted as a plastic worm

1rod has been my inspiration since day 1.
The summer skunk grind is real right now going back to the basics which is easy to forget when you’re desperate for a bite
is there really a wrong way to fish a senko.. the only wrong way is if its not in water lol.. nice vid
jtboll00 hahaha ^^ agreed with what you said, although I've had a bass jump out a foot out of the water to grab it when I got it hung in a tree once :P
+1Rod1ReelFishing Which way of rigging is more effective?
1Rod1ReelFishing ha that's awesome.. that most have been one hungry bass.. and jed I only rig mine wacky.. right in the middle.. bass love it!
Ok thanks but do the senkos come off when you rig them wacky? I've heard it does so what can I buy to stop it?
its called a wacky ring o-ring tool.. they sell em at most fish shops.. I buy my O-rings on ebay cause they are just cheap.. idk maybe its just me but seems like you already knew that
I literally came back to watch your old videos couple hours ago and i saw this one, i then went fishing and caught my new pb today using your tips! Thank you so much
This is awesome, thanks for this! I've been binge-watching your videos for the past week since I found you, and was literally thinking last night that I should leave a comment somewhere and ask if you had any interest in posting some videos like this. Personally I would like to see some tutorial/tip videos for jigs, namely how to fish them and when/how to use jig trailers. Thanks again man, and keep the awesome videos coming!
Nice fishing channel. Guys share this guys videos. It shows that he truly cares deeply about the sport.
after I watched this i fell in love with senko I'm 10 and I caught a 6lb bass on one it was a wacky wrigged
S bassin good job. FISH ON MAN
S bassin I'm 12
I did too but on acrank bait
When you say 6 pounder are you sure it wasn't just a 2 pounder
Rigged
Today I caught a 4 pound bass in a neighborhood pond. This was the first good sized bass I caught. Thank you so much!
What’s your best now? Just curious
This is a great video! I been fishing on and off for the past 5 years but never really tried any plastics or finesse baits. I’ve always been about live bait such as worms or minnows. Although it’s fun catching fish that way I kinda got tired of it and decided to finally start getting into plastics such as senkos, and even though I haven’t landed a fish yet I have had little baby bass hit my smaller tubs. Showing me there’s a will and there’s a way. Until then my box is pretty full with colors now 😁
Caught my new PB largemouth with this pattern. Thank you so much sir!!
Some topwater would be nice maybe try a frog
nall
choch shroom i
Same sorry for that one comment
Mr Frog is my favorite
I just started watching your videos and I go to the same spots as you because I live in ellicott city too. It is so much fun to see you catch huge fish at places I fish! Your videos are amazing! Keep on making them and making your viewers happy because I sure am!
Thanks for the tips. I tried the skip technique and caught a 4.27 lb largemouth on my second cast. It's this biggest fish caught from our boat on our small pond in over two years.
Lol 1 million views, now you’re at 236 million and a million subs. Damn.
Dude got 1.3 just on this video
Very nice, man! Congratulations on the 1 Millions views! I still have a long journey for the 1M line. Hahahahaha. And I am very glad that you finally started a "how to" series, Mike! I mean...you got the knowledge and the techniques -- I'm sure folks will want to learn from you! I found the video awesome, by the way. And, of course, wacky rigged for life, man. Lol. That's wobbling action is the thing!
Once you come to Philly this Fall, we will definitely do some fishing! After my father leaves in July, I'll focus on expanding my Species list. Gotta explore all over again.
Extreme Philly Fishing Thanks bro! Looking forward to moving back to philly in August. Just in time for the striper run, lets catch some monsters XD
Hi I’m involved :)
Mike, I have never used a plastic worm like the Senko to catch fish. Thanks to THIS video I had to try and have caught several now with the weightless Texas rig. It was AWESOME! Now I will try to wacky rig. Thanks and keep the teaching videos coming.
I believe this was the first video of yours that I watched. Up until this year i've never really used plastics. But this morning I caught a bass on a Texas rigged Baby Brush Hog and three more on a Texas rigged Senko. I have a wacky rig tool on the way. Keep up the great work.
thanks for the vid. im a beginner bass fisherman who needs tips like this. keep up the good work!!
MuggyCactus0217 how are you doing now?
@@scrubhq9130 lol I wanna know too
Thank you so much I have been searching for a vid like this thx
Thanks for your tutorials. I had half an hour to fish after work tonight and used the wacky rig for the first time. Got a three and four pounder using a white senko . And a few other bites as well....
These videos are very helpful! Please keep making more no matter what baits or lures you are using!!!
Haha been watching for years and the recommend me one of the og vids 😂 love ya mike
Ayyyy, the classics never die 😎
Top water lures would be nice for a tutorial
love your videos i went fishing for 3 hours walked 2 miles didnt catch nothing but cant complain i got a 5 to 4 pound smallie yesterday my iggest yet....love ur vids
Skipping a wacky rig senko is my go to. Something about that skip makes it work so much better.
I loved that you got a bite while messing around lol. Good stuff!
Lol
Top water frogs please I just got one and I don't know how to fish it hollow body and ribbits
Jose Salazar when you are around pads and mats pop it like twice then let it sit for a couple of seconds. When you are by weeds but they aren't at the surface don't pop it just reel slow
@Frank Mclain pull the hooks away from the body just a little bit where there is space between the rubber and hook. You'll get more weeds but it helps get more hookups
Great video, you can tell you're really passionate about fishing which makes the video that much better, awesome channel keep up the good work!
thanks mike, i live down in Orlando fl and i have a pond near me that holds monster bass my biggest is 14.03 next time you are down here stop by and catch a few
Can u fish a senko in clear water with a bunch of little rocks and about 2-4ft deep water? Any help is appreciated.
If there are bass, then yes, but I would Texas rig.
No
Shut up you have literally Dick of a clue what you’re talking about I’ve killed in these conditions. Troll.
I wasn't a big fan of senkos but I bought a pack and I watched this vid and now it's hands down my favorite bait!!! Thank you for making this video. You have made me a better fishermen!!!
glad the tips helped! the senko is one of my top baits during the summer!
By far best bait to use
just picked up a bait caster reel (abu garcia) and picking up the wacky rig and texas rig and boy oh boy.... that has really upped my bass fishing. thank you for the videos. you taught well and helped me out a lot.
love your videos! you've taught me so many things. I would love for you to come down to Leesburg Georgia and come catch some of these South Georgia bass
I wish I could be as good as he is
what hooks are you using for the wacky rig
most likely a wacky hook
+chriscomer really any wacky hooks would work great
A weedless worm hook
Chris Comer 2/o hook
Saw this once in 2015 with a buddy and revisiting in 2020 love the videos mike🤙🏽❤️
Idk how i got here but 5 years later from this. Look where he is now. Its crazy man keep up the good work
Is it me or do wacky rig hooks look like circle hooks almost?
shaped similar to circle hooks for sure - the difference is that the hook point doesn't curve in like circle hooks
That makes sense. Thanks!
I have used both circle and wacky hooks with no problems.
Good to know!
They look really close to a circle hook
What I am confused about is how do u tell when you senko has sunk all the way to the bottom? I have been trying to figure this out.
Usually whenever I cast I watch the worm and as soon as it hits the water I pull my line out 4 times and watch the line until it stops pulling from the senko falling
if you're watching your line closely the arch in the line is different when the bait is falling vs. when it's resting on the bottom
Visually follow your line and watch as it slowly sinks in the into the water. When your senko hits bottom, you'll notice the line sink rate changes (both on speed and on arc)
+1Rod1ReelFishing I like your rods
I like that skipping with the Senko….. works really well around my area thanks for the tip!
I would just like to take the time to say thank you for your how to vids. I've been only really fishing hardcore for about a little over a year now so I'm still on been status. I'm a NOVA fisherman residing right off the Potomac in Loudoun County.
I've always had terrible outings with my senkos until I picked up some tips from his vid. I went out at 6 am on July 4th and was at my local pond for a solid 2.5 hours. I ended up landing 9 fish and losing three all on pumpkin 4" senkos so needless to say it was by far my most productive outing.
Keep up the good work with the vids, you sir have earned yourself another sub my friend.
35qantwine Wow great job, and glad my vid helped you out! Thanks for watching, I appreciate the support :D
I can tell you've got a lot more confident in front of the camera... good job!
I was always extremely camera shy and afraid to talk in front of crowds before, I guess practice makes perfect!
ok... good job man, could I dm you for some questions on Instagram?
1Rod1ReelFishing I love your videos
how did you set up your baitcaster for weightless lures without getting any backlashes?
Set it up the same way as you would any lure. The senko without any weight is actually pretty heavy.
+Fishing with Michael Consul he's telling the truth
+Fishing with Michael Consul ui
eddie smith a senko weighs alot
eddie smith a senco weighs alot more than most worms. but I use a spinning rod and reel when I'm worm fishing.
Thank you for this vid! I watched this video, then took out some watermelon yamasenkos on a Texas rig to my favorite spot and absolutely slayed the large mouth there!! A very new experience as I usually catch nothing but some tiny sun fish and perhaps a couple mid size catfish lol. I hope all is well and that you get back to weekly videos soon, keep up the great work!!
Came back from the Adirondack Mountain area from a 10 day camping trip, lost so many Gary Yamamoto senkos, I wasn't using the ring, smallies really tear them up ordered a bunch off Amazon. The senkos got expensive at the camp store at like 10 bucks a pack, my best day was 7 smallies, not great but respectful. I mostly fish in my Jackson Kilroy kayay. Really like how it gets you to the places you want to be.
Square bill cranks!!!
7:28 almost trips
+Hallking78 lol
Hey mike, I watch your videos a lot and wondered what the best way to hook a senko and now you made one. Thank you dude
I just bought some sencos never tried im gonna try your techniques bro thank you very much very helpful
"How to fish a tube?" anyone?
you can usually cast it an reel like a kastmaster or other lure that sink or cast it and let I sink to the bottom and reel-twitch it
I got a heart on a 3 year old video comment ❤️. Mike i know you can see this! First of all dam.... I used to fish so much. Fishing was my life. I’d fish before school, after school then I’d fish all Saturday and allll Sunday. Mike was the first channel I watched , he used to carp fish off a bride with bread lmaoo. Then John B blew up and lunkers, I’m 19 turning 20 in 3 months and I remember watching these videos when I was 13~14 I remembered being so inspired by these you tubers and I tried to make videos myself. Dam time has changed so much, I’m out of high school been in college for 2 years , I’m working full time. I wish I could go fishing again, funny actually.. before I would struggle to fish because I never had money, I thought buying $15 braided fishing line was a lot but I would save up and be so happy when I bought it . Not it’s not a money issue but a time issues lol who would of thought. You can but lures but you can’t buy time haha
@@tonydavila2606 just find a small creek or pond near you and spend an hour or so here and there. You'll get back into it in no time
jig and spinnerbait, Cant figure out how to catch em on either
I truly enjoy your how to videos. they are so informative and simple to understand. You are now my main channel to watch...I only have two more fisherman that I watch.
fishngnana68 thanks for watching, glad you enjoy my vids, I appreciate the support!
I'm glad the camera was pointing directly at your sneakers while showing how to set the bait up haha
:P oops
Where can you get shingles from
Darryl Miles Grandma
Spinnerbaits or swim jig
I'm semi new to fishing bass, I never have much luck. I watched your video ON THE WATER and ended up catching 4 fish. Went the next day and caught 6! Thank you. I realized that i was only catching 0 or 1 fish, was that I was fishing way too fast. I slowed it down, let it set and pop a few times. Missed a few bites due to too much slack but i think that's where a braid to floro might be better than the mono. Anyway, thank you and tight lines!
I love Senkos, I use Neko for wacky setups with a weedless 1.0 hook and texas rig with a lock on the weight and a 5.0 hook
spinnerbait pls!
Colin Fitzpatrick cast let it sink slow retrieve
anyone got tips on how i can kill a snapping turtle?
Bullet
Hook it eye :]
kida hard to shoot in the middle of a city
No even better yell at it and it will die magic!
360_ _FaZeScOpE
^ this worked ty
Thanks this video helped. I went bass fishing and my friend caught his first bass.
Thanks 1Rod... This video is a great one to help us new to bass fishing and that are trying to learn to fish senco!!!
holy shit there's a video for senko fishing ?
Im going to try this technique! You should make a video for popper minnow crankbaits
One piece of advice. Let out some line when the lure hits the water. Your line will swing back at you away from your intended strike zone as it descends if you don't. You will just have to get used to keeping an eye on your line for that portion of the cast in case of a hit on its way down.
You deserve more subscribers!😄 thanks for the tips and tactics!
Thank you Mike your the man. What rod reel line and pound test do you recommend using soft plastics
Thank you for doing video bro... It helps a lot when u do these type of vids man.. Thank you again..
first day using a senko I pulled out a 4 pound bass.. great vid and thanks for the tips
I just caught a 4 pounder on the four inch yamasenko in pumpkin with green and black flake
Thanks for the vids. you guys are always welcome to come up for bluefishing off Long Island.
You inspire me a lot i have always wanted to fish just like you.your the best TH-camr ever from TJ
Nice video, a Senko to me a target specific bait. Find targets that you want to fish, a small pocket, stump, small brush or lay-down. you can just throw like a worm and fish grass too but mainly that's what I would use it for.
You're a good fisherman! Always catching something.
You’ve grown so much love the og vids
You just earned yourself a new sub. Great video... Keep up the good work
Hey mike! Great vid but I was wondering if I could use braid on a wacky rig and get the same action.
How do you cast light lures with a baitcastee I tried and I backlash all the time
one thing i was always wandering how do you keep your reel so smooth mine is always casting like only 5 to 10 feet and ill put a lot of weights on it but it won't do anything.
giving demonstration.... inadvertently catches bass.... you are a beast!
So on spinning rods I know you need to have some weight usually to get any type of casting distance, do bait casters just not use any added weight? Like you would just rig it up with a worm or whatever? Weighted hook? How do they cast so far?
I watched this video. Went and bought senkos. Tore up some bass! I posted the proof. Just wanted to give you some credit, great vid!
Hope you're doing great buddy. 👍 watched this 8 years ago and algorithm brought me to it today haha. ✌️ 🎣
Thanks. More of a Saltwater Angler but I want to try out some freshwater and this is really useful
Man I love your channel keep doing what your doing man good job
6:28 nothing better than to catch a fish when you're demonstrating. Shows that the technique and bait works
What pound line do u use my line always breaks because I use 10 pound test line and what hook should I use to rig up a senko
Before leaving a spot, it is a good idea to make multiple casts in a small 20 foot area. Burn the bait in. Then shoot a finesse bait in there and get ready! Perfect demonstration of the technique! Fire up the fish!!
hey that's Font Hill! Wow... came across your video looking for rookie tips on senkos... good to see a local guy doing so well on TH-cam! subscribing
maybe I'll see you around.. I plan on taking my canoe out a ton this year
Great video. Im going to try the skip method. Twitch twitch pause is awesome with the wacky rig btw! Thanks!!!
Do you attach a leader line to avoid showing line memory when fishing with Senkos on a Texas rig?
Alex H yes I usually have at least a 6 ft leader of fluoro. Most typically a senko is a visual presentation, the fluoro makes the line almost invisible.
Came back to this video I watched last year when I was new bass fishing, now I caught my pb of 8lbs on a weightless Texas rigged senko using the same pattern
Can't wait to head out fishing soon!
hey, what were the settings on your baitcaster for the senko? my line kept back lashing in the middle of my cast.
Hey I have troubles casting far with my baitcastwr and especially on a lighter lure. Could it be my reel? I bought my 2 baitcaster used one is a shimano caius and the other a blackmax
I catch bass on those things all day. I use the green and yellow ones.
Can you make a video on how to/where to fish spinner baits? and what is the best blade colors and sizes?
when I wacky rig I find that octopus hooks work very well
Loved the vid n tips in the description! Subbed \m/
Berkley Powerbait bluegill pogy shad i would love to see you try next
Still watching the best and helpful videos thanks man let’s go👍👍👍👍👍
I've found that the o ring does quite the opposite, my first time fishing the Wacky Rig, I caught 6 bass on a pond, only losing 1 worm, ( YUM DINGER) when I used o rings, my baits ( Gary Yamamoto AND Yum Dingers) tore in half and were completely ruined, and I didn't catch a single fish even though I got plenty of bites.
