I wanna have Mike and Dr. Michio Maku in a subaru build segment, first they both explain the build set up then how tuning works and then track the heck out of a Subie.
Oh wow! You can hear how stout that tubing is tapping on it! No cracks!! That turbo is wild too! I bet the aluminum center housing is good for cooling. Seems like it'll put tons of area under the curve!
This is really interesting, a while ago I decided my -05 wrx needed some more top end. But I did not want to lose response. After a while I found an ad in my local subaru group for a kinugawa twinscroll turbo, with twin scroll manifold and up pipe. Then I went to a track day and wrecked my gearbox. But this video inspires me to pursue my tuning plans, which are way more modest, I’m not sure I want to push more than 350hp on my stock ej205, maybe not even that much. I do more autocross than track days, so response is more important than top end.

tuned on E85, you ever run into repeatedly killing your widebands? did it come down to wideband type, positioning, or perhaps coolant temp enrichment/ tune related? Thanks for your time!

One thing is that you should always mount the sensor horizontally instead of vertically. Lag isnt so bad on the street if its predictable. it can get expensive to fuel normal operations if youre in boost all the time, but it is great for a race car. Another good thing about that bigger turbine housing is that it can help control EGTs a little.
Dunno about lag not being bad on the street, especially on an AWD car with tons of traction. Maybe on a FWD car with limited grip.
All im saying is it can be sized bigger so that youre not on boost 100% of the time, which is a good reason to have a bigger turbo. I wouldnt want boost delay. Ill see myself out. Racecars only around here.
@@you_can_fuck_your_own_ass_69 got ya. I know a lot of guys will tune it out by the time it gets to the stage, but I could see it being more of a consideration for the flat layout. Im sure there is only so much a person can do do with the compression ratio and engine speed safely to get things spooled up.
if only there was some way to delay ignition timing with drive by wire. We could create some anti turbo lag system that could work while the car is rolling in race conditions. Some kind of selectable, automatic rolling anti turbo lag system. It would have to be easily programmable via ecu. i hope one day lag is easily addressed with some sort of technology like this. one day.
Our project GD STI has that but its tuned mildly so we don't fry the cat.
Why twin scroll instead of VGT?
There are not many VGT applications
getting something for nothing? there is no free lunch... lol
Many times there is
@@motoiq often not the case... great hardware laying on the table though. Once installed and get to tuned, many realize that you have sacrifice something to gain something.
Not in this case, this setup is capable of an easy 150 whp more than stock and about the same about of lag.
make podcast pls
We have one
10:56 4/8”? You mean 1/8” .120” to be exact
I said full race not 4/8!
Peak
can you twinscroll a ej257? is it even worth it?
Yes
Big power plus Subaru engine = broken Subaru engine. Bonus: broken Subaru trans.
Broken 5 speed anyway
Whenever I see Subaru content I’m reminded why I don’t want to own a Subaru lol
But yet you can’t get away from them
@@Justinhomii Pulling away from them as theyr'e on the side of the road isn't so hard
I really wanted one, but they're probably the most over priced car on the used market for enthusiasts.. People STILL want 10k+ for their basic ass WRX that barely makes over 200 hp and who's engine is on the way out anyway... Let alone what the STIs cost. Who is out there buying these things?
@@SoulEraser000 JDM STI with a EJ207 if you want reliability. 140k km on mine zero issues. These engines are very particular and will punish bad owners.
@@findmeifyoucan Not even talking about new cars here, bud... People want premium prices on their 20 year old WRX was the point of my original comment.
Such an outdated setup 🙃
I don't know how you can say this is outdated.
