    I agree with this 100%. I tell customers 330 hp on shit California gas, 390 with E85. If all is right, this is track day safe. A little more is possible for short duration like street use. This is if the tuning is perfect, the fueling, cooling, and everything else is great, and the engine is in good shape to start with. At higher power levels you are one knock event from killing it so it is all about the tuning. The tuner has to be smart and understand Subarus.

    Had a 2.5RS that had a JDM Ver.5 swap. Blew up just driving normally on a cold night, about 5 minutes into my drive, no aggressive driving, nothing. Judging by the mix of colours pouring out from under my car it was not worth rebuilding and I sold it. Meanwhile, my e92 335i gains 100hp with a catless dp, tune and intake - with twice that for headroom till I hit fuelling limits. Night and day... I do miss gawking at my pearl white 2.5 RS, though..

  • @josephmatuszak3855
    @josephmatuszak3855 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +15

    As a dyno guy... I seem to see that 430whp is about the end of what may stay together(stock block daily), and that's assuming good fuel and not doing sustained side to side G-Load. After that I feel it always benefits the user doing something more substantial in the block/heads/gaskets. Depending on the "stock block" year/type though, you could be only safe around 350whp...

    • @Smeedia
      @Smeedia  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      I’ll tend to push it a little farther but definitely depends on a lot of factors. I’d say 400 is typically a good spot to stop where you can get some decent life out of the engine as well. Drivers style also plays a HUGE factor

    Id love a video like this on an FA20 from the later half of the first gen 86/brz. If you could do one thatd be awesome, but at the same time i understand that while being a boxer engine, its not one youve done as much with, and that there is less info on due to it being a "newer" subaru engine. If you cant, would you have a youtuber that youd recommend that has this type of info, but for FA20?

    Hey, I got a question I hope you can answer! I hate to ask forums because I know the hate I will get lol. I have a 2012 WRX Hatchback in rally blue that I love. It went from 49K to 215k without a single issue other than the clutch, brakes, tires, and headlamps. Now it has low compression in a cylinder. The car itself is in great condition. No rust, no tears inside, carpets have been always covered by mats, etc. I want to drive the car but inspection won't pass due to engine fault with cylinder.
    I'm curious, should I just buy an engine from eBay? They say compression is between 130-140 in all cylinders, and the engine looks VERY clean, but not clean to the point where they cleaned it just for photos... It is USDM but they don't know the mileage :(
    OR do you think I should rip apart my engine and rebuild the short block? I have the money but I don't want to stick too much money into this... but there is an ROI, and that is I get to drive my truck less... if I keep driving my truck, the worth of it is going to decrease more than the cost to put in a new engine into my Subaru and drive that instead.
    I'm good with my hands, I have tools, I've done this work before but not on Subaru (Mitsubishi is where my mechanic experience comes from), I have a truck, I have a place to work on it, etc.

    The crevice volume (area between the top of the piston and the compressio ring) of a oversquare engine like the EJ is naturally bigger and thus increases hydrocarbon emissions. Gas gets stuck between the cylinder walls and the pistons, then get expulsed on the exhaust stroke. This is why Subaru had to use small ringlands, higher up on the pistons, which makes them weaker, especially during detonation events.
