BINGO! You hit it on the head. Absolutely true all you said. It's a tough life. I hung on long enough to save money. I ended up going to an aircraft maintenance school in Utica, NY. Best investment I ever made. Shipboard life is fast money and has a large burn out factor. Not good mentally for most. You give up too much. I work 4 days on 3 off on a typical work week as an aircraft mechanic. I've got 3 years left for retirement. I also have good medical plus VA benefits. Save your money and get into something you really want to do. Save enough to cover schooling plus expenses. Don't get trapped. You're a good man.God bless you and your family.

    • @Tr3TV2022
      @Tr3TV2022  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

When I was starting out entry level.. I always had my own room ... it’s pretty rare that you share rooms .. especially on American flag ships .. maybe in the navy but not the merchant navy

I see you’ve been sailing with SIU, and I have too. But I haven’t recently due to them (SIU) still requiring mariner’s to be vaccinated. Check out Grand River Navigation out of Traverse City, Michigan. Their schedule is 28/14, $285 a day, MM&P Union Inland Division, $100 extra added to your daily rate if you go past day 28, off for 2 months during the winter, because the Great Lakes shut down, no working dues unlike SIU, unemployment when your off for the 2 months, $350 yearly clothing allowance, and of course health benefits. And I believe their initial dues is $1,000, but they give you a year or 2 to pay it off. And their monthly dues are $150 a month I believe. I applied last nite. Just another option for yourself, and other mariner’s you know. Peace

Appreciate the video. Honestly thought at first it was gonna be just some petty gripes or something. But wholesome info for sure. If I'm honest with myself, I strongly believe, to the point of beinng convinced, that all the major events in my life have been to mold me for this experience. I dont like using social media, (Besides YT for information on topics Im interested in) But I log onto FB maybe once or twice every month for about an hour. I dont use twitter or instagram or anything else. Dont like having a phone either. (Actually went without one for 2 years.) And honestly, I do enjoy the company of other people, but Im prone to being alone and it doesnt bother me much.
Mental health wise, thats a big thing I've had to be honest with myself in considering this path. (About the last 3 years, but always had a desire for the sea since about 5 years old) When I joined the military, I found out it was too soon for me. I was just out of HS, parents were getting divorced at the time, both became alcoholics because of it, lots of family drama etc. Plus I was still a kid and had a LOT of growing up to do. But 12+ years later, a lot of "bad s**t" has happened but it made me stronger and more resilient. Biggest reason is faith in God. Like an actual relationship with Him. Now that may not be for everyone, and I get that, but thats pulled me through a lot of stuff I can even begin to explain.
But Im rambling now, so again, thanks for the video mate. Maybe someday we'll meet. Its a small world afterall. Take care out there and looking forward to watching more of your videos and hearing your perspective on things.

The covid thing was real though. Imagine doing 10 months but you're only making $1600 a month and every couple of weeks you go a couple days without sleeping for replenishment at sea. Never sleep for longer than a 5-hour period of time. Be happy you actually get paid to go through the pain, unlike people who are in the military.

You keep bringing up wifi. For thousands of year's sailors has been on the ocean. Without mail, wifi, phones, t.v.'s. I spent 11 years in the U.S. Navy. That was before wifi. You work stay busy, time flies by. The Navy, the military in general misses out on birthdays and holidays, anniversaries. Unlike Merchant Mariner we don't choose when to deploy.

I keep bring up Wi-Fi because if you go look at my comments that’s all people keep asking about .. this ain’t the 70s & 80s where people are willing to go 4-6 months without talking to the wife or kids .. the Merchant Marines miss birthdays & holidays as well .. you have made no point here sir good day 🫡

I retook the exam yesterday and I qualified for
      PR
      AO
      BM
      ABH
      ABF
      ABE
You think I'm OK with those rates or you don't recommend it, PR is alright but the others are hard labor. I'm up against the wall

This is a different generation bro. technology is part of everyone's life. it will be more difficult for people nowadays to go with tech. we are accustomed to accessing everything at our fingertips.

This life is not for everyone it really is a small group of people that can handle the hardship of this work. In other words if your a pussy or momma’s boy this isn’t the place for you. Because you will not find sympathy from others who work and live the life. You need jail mentality, period.
