    Great video. Retired Captain. I love your description of the male/female relationship onboard. Your description was perfect. Also about being a Q onboard and a "girl" ashore (Nails). An Engineer and a Woman. Go get that License. I never cared about anything with the crew, white, black, male, female or anything else as long as your goal was the same as mine. Be on time, be sober (Do what you want ashore), be safe, respect your fellow crew, and go home with all your fingers and toes, and everything else. It is an awesome career path. I will be watching more of your videos

    Loved your video. Could get along with you so easily. The women's perspective part was great. I drive Heavy vehicles in the Army and was 1 of 2 trainers. One was an old guy who yelled, freaked out, couldn't wait for someone to do something wrong. Whereas I stayed super calm and made it a step by step deal. Literally all the female soldier's requested, or did whatever they could to be in my course. The other guy wanted everyone to have a hard time, maybe even females the most. I'd make sure everyone learned & got their lisence. Anyway, to shorten this lengthy dramatic story: the female soldier is all told me similar stories to yours while driving. That sometimes they end up working harder because they're challenged or told they can't do something. While others found it annoying that everyone wanted to do things for them. Some straightforward, straight up, were happy to let males do their stuff for them & skate.

      Zanda Williams i can answer that for you. First off there is no set pay, each ship is a different contract so the pay varies. And I’m going through the program because you gonna catch hell trying to get on a ship as a C card. You’re at the bottom of the totem pole so I personally recommend going thru piney point because they will get you your first job which is phase 4. I do know a few people that have shipped out as a c card so it’s possible especially in the summertime when a lot of jobs are vacant because a lot of sailors take time off in the summer.

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn

      Zanda Williams hey. I’m an Oiler. Not an AB.
      My first ship after training, I had a super low base pay from a particular ship out of Jacksonville. I was a wiper at the time. I believe my base wasn’t more than $3500 and I only worked like 2 or 3 hours of OT. It was pretty bad. But after upgrading and working for a different company, I was good.
      My apprentice pay was like $3 an hour. No joke. I was poor lmao.

    How many days/week do you work when onboard, 120 out of 120?
    How does time off work?
    If you work a ship you like, is there anyway to remain on it long term?
    Are schedules UTC or local time, and if the former, does that mean you might have breakfast at midnight after crossing enough timezones?

    Also there are a lot of entry level positions. Do you select your task? You were an Oiler but there are also cooks and such. Nothing wrong with that but I would like to do more than just be a ship cook.

    Hello Dani I just watched your video and found it helpful, I was wondering if you could help me on a couple of questions I had.what is the union you are in called. how did you get into the union and what should I expect in the union when being a first time rookie. My uncle worked under SLC as a merchant marine a long time ago during the Vietnam days and I’m just trying to follow in his footsteps .I just got my twic card and im a step closer to the dream. If you could help me out I would appreciate it thanks.
    P.S. Im next to Long Beach, CA.

      It’s called Seafarers International Union. Go to seafarers.or for the application, but watch my video on how to become a merchant seaman first. I talk about what documents you will need BEFORE you apply. Most of the important details are in that video. Hope it helps. I wish you well with everything. 🙏🏾 Thank you for watching!

    Do you have duty days? Or watches (watch standings)? I’m in the navy and I just wanted to see some similarities and differences. How is washing your laundry on the ship?

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      BERTRAM SCROGGINS yes we stand watch. 4 hours of every day when you’re unlicensed. I believe the officers might have the same schedule but I’m not sure. The engine may be a little different than the deck. We all do our own laundry on the ship. Each ship only has like a 20 person crew. No laundry people or anything like that.

    • @Bert1010
      @Bert1010 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dani_Love12 I cant stand watch. So this probably isn’t for me. I appreciate it though! Nice video.

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      leo deleon hey Leo, after the first three months, you do not get to come home....you either wait at the school until your ship is ready or you leave right after the first 3 months. Good luck! 💪🏾

    • @Dani_TheUnicorn
      @Dani_TheUnicorn 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kingz TheArtist hey girl! Sorry I’m super late responding. I’d say it depends on what you like. I went engine because I love to work with my hands and build things lol. I’ve always been that way. I also chose it because I thought they made more money lol. But if you like to cook, go steward (sa). If you like to be outdoors and paint and want to learn how to steer the ship and work your way up to being a mate and captain, go deck. If you want to work with your hands and get dirty and like to be in 120 degree weather, go engine lol. Every department starts off cleaning basically anyway. No matter which department you choose. Good luck 💕

      James Berneil dating is a whole other ball game. But you shouldn’t dead your relationship based on someone’s occupation. It really just depends on the person. There are some faithful people out here lol. Not everyone goes buck wild, though many do lol. I’ve seen it!! Trust and respect play a major role. Good luck!!

    09:08 You got it wrong (of course) it's not chivalry, it's for you don't mess up and give extra work. I saw this a lot, women doing something wrong on board and the rest of the crew working overtime to fix whatever mess the women made, sometimes it happens to men but only when they are fresh on board

      You can become a captain by becoming a merchant seaman/mariner.

      Jhamani Marcel some are relief jobs like 45 days.
      Most are rotary which are 4 months. Most of the time you can extend your time and stay on longer. Or you can be a permanent which means you’ll work 4 months on, and come back after your relief leaves. Thanks for watching my video, by the way!
