I go further. Eva Cassidy had the best female voice of all time for pop songs. Nobody had such a beautiful voice that could transport the message of a song perfectly. If you listen to all the other songs she covered, you realize the value of the message. Try Imagine - John Lennons famous song. If you ever listen to it, you never can listen to Lennons version without thinking "he wrote it for her, only her". And so you can do it with any other song... from Over the rainbow up to Time after Time or Songbird.
Back in '95 I was visiting a friend in D.C. while I was on holiday in the U.S. and we saw Eva playing in a little bar. I can honestly say she had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard, grown men (me included) were sat there crying into their beer. It still makes me sad that we lost her so soon, maybe we didn't deserve something so beautiful.
Like listening to an angel cry. So, so beautiful, words can't describe. All you can do is sit there and bawl your eyes out. And you're right, we didn't deserve her.
They say that Sting never lets his songs be recorded by anyone else, but when he heard Eva’s version he gave it a rare blessing. And it’s Eva playing lead guitar. She’s an amazing player, plays like she sings, dynamic and subtle.
Her version is better than the original, i think sting knew right away (and im super thankful for that because that also gave way for ellie goulding to record it...and i think i ve found someone who manages to make it sound as good as eva cassidy).
When I saw that you were reacting to Eva Cassidy, I immediately teared up. Thank you so much for this. "Autumn Leaves" is another of her songs that will move you. Try to get the live version, just Eva and her guitar. (She played the guitar almost as beautifully as she sang.)
I agree that clip is gold. She plays the guitar and sings flawless, here cover of Somewhere over the rainbow is aslo great, I like John Martyn's version is also great.
I was so fortunate to have heard Eva live a few times in a club in DC. It was magical. I listen to her recordings frequently. I adore her voice; it gives me peace!
Sting loved Eva's version. He said it was what he imagined when he wrote it. Sting is also responsible for making Eva well-known in the music industry. He bought all the Eva cd's that were available and gave them to his music industry contacts... tho, sadly this was after she passed away.
I don't think so (Sting was responsible for making her known in the music industry). He may have contributed but it is an exaggeration to say it was him who made her known.
@@harlech52 You're exactly right! It was by accident Eva was discovered, and it was by someone who found her cassette tape and gave it to a DJ in London that worked for the BBC.
A lot of misinformation in this thread. No Sting didn’t really have much to do with it, nor was it a bizarre accident. There are a couple of documentaries on TH-cam if folks want the story.

She just knows..... Instinctively.... And it's perfect. Sometimes something perfect comes our way..... Like Eva Cassidy voice. Like Eva singing this song.
Judie Garland, The Hawaiian version, Eva Cassidy, and Patti Label are the most recognized. I am sure there are some we have never heard, but as far as I am concerned nothing else compares.
Greatest singer most people have never heard of. She chose her art over record company greed, got to love that! Listen to more of her, you will not be disappointed.
Eva Cassidy was a true master vocally and as a guitarist. She is an amazing Blues singer and her renditions of "The Autumn Leaves" and "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" will absolutely blow you away!
As has been mentioned already in the comments, Eva Cassidy's version of OVER THE RAINBOW is just stunning. When she dying of cancer, I played this song for Mother, which she said was beautiful. It reminded her of songs she sang in church as a child. It brought tears to her eyes and gave her comfort and a sense of reverence. I miss my mother everyday. With this song, I was able to give her a little peace. Most people remember Judy Garland singing this at the end of the Wizard of Oz. But Eva reaches celestial heights with her soaring vocal performance. Eva Cassidy just wanted to make records on her own terms. Simply with her voice and guitar. But the record companies wanted to jazz up her sound by over producing her music. She refused because it would compromise the intimacy she wanted to convey. Sadly, Eva passed away just as she was gaining attention for her talent. My hope is that she and my mother find each in Heaven to sing this song together. Because it gives me comfort. May they both rest in peace. Lastly, Eva's cover of the Willie Nelson classic, BLUE EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN is pure and majestic. Enjoy.
Sting said “It’s my song, but Eva owns it” She was starting to get a name for herself in NYC before she became ill and I think Mick Fleetwood was looking to promote her. It was just by chance that Terry Wogan (a legendary MOR DJ in the Uk) got hold of her recordings (sadly after she had died) and had a platform that allowed him to play an unknown artist on his show. His listeners did the rest and the world was finally introduced to this wonderful artist
So glad to hear this! I first heard Eva about 20 years ago and it was THIS song, and I fell in love. And she was already gone then; skin cancer at 33. She was a blonde, fair-skinned gardener... But she has one of the most tremendous voices I've ever heard. Don't be fooled by the quietness. On the same album (Songbird), try "Golden Thread"...and hang on. Or, and I can't tell you where, a gospel song called "How Can I Keep From Singing". On that one, even holding on won't help. She's special.
"Over the Rainbow" is my favorite song of all time and I have to say Eva's is better than Judy Garland's, it just is. Of course this is my opinion but hearing over 50 renditions of this song including Judy Garland's this is the best. :)

Eva's voices legendary and she did not become famous until after her death in 1996 from cancer. She was only 33. My two top female artists are Eva Cassidy and Angelina Jordan. In less than a year after this recording was made, Eva died of cancer. Listening to the song after you know that she is no longer with us intensifies the experience exponentially.
Thanks for your reaction. Like Angelina Jordan, Eva Cassidy beautifully sang a range of songs and made them all her own. Sting himself was blown away when he heard Eva's rendition of his song. He put a copy of her Songbird CD into record producer David Foster’s hands who quoted him saying, “‘If you want to hear the greatest version of my song ever’-he didn’t say it in an egotistical way-he said, ‘listen to Fields Of Gold with this girl, it’ll change your life.’ And her voice is life-changing, she’s that spiritual.”
Eva conveys so much emotion through her singing, it's simply incredible and heart wrenching; and made all the more tragic by her story and untimely death!
I urge you to react to Eva's live performance (at Blues Alley) of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow." For myself and thousands of others, it is THE most heartbreakingly beautiful, poignant, emotional rendition ever. Her studio version is wonderful too, of course, but that Blues Alley performance -- just her voice and her solo guitar, beautifully played -- is one you will never forget.

If you're going to react to any more of her songs , I highly suggest "Autumn Leaves" The live version at blues alley where she performed ! You really can't go wrong with anything she did !
Her rendition of over the rainbow will show u her true talent, u will think about this song differently after hearing it. It shows her real musicianship being over the rainbow has so many covers and version but hers is the most unique. She is captivating watching her perform over the rainbow.
Eva's version of Sting's "Fields of Gold" is stunning. She had so much depth to her voice and unsurpassed interpretive skill. One of those singers who just blaze with their talent. Cancer took this lovely angel from the world. Wish the written lyrics on the version you listened to here were more accurate. The words paint such a vivid picture. Sting wrote a gem. Thanks for your review. xo
One of the things I love about you guys is that you feel the poetry of each song. Maybe not your favorite genre of music but you genuinely listen deep into the effort of the performance.
It’s a poem by “Robert frost”, nothing gold can stay. Pony boy from the movie “The Outsiders” says it . Many people play this song to that part . Check it out , it very beautiful.
I love watching people's reactions to beautiful songs. Eva Cassidy was something very special. Eva died of cancer in 1996. This song was originally written by Sting after he bought a manor in Wilshire England that was surrounded by barley fields. In the summer, the breeze would move over the shimmering surface of the fields, like waves on an ocean of gold. (it reminded him of the movement of lovers) The song was a metaphor describing the deep love he felt for his wife Trudie and their life together over the years. Eva Cassidy's cover of this song is very moving. Eva also has done phenomenal covers of Somewhere over the Rainbow, and Autumn Leaves. Just a heads up ... some of the lyrics shown in the video were off. (I never made promises lightly) instead of "like these" And (when the west wind moves) instead of "west wing". Sorry, I'm a teacher, it's in my nature. Thanks for the video.
Eva's I Had I a Golden Thread is amazing. Breathtaking. As amazing as Eva's voice is, o Had I Golden Thread, I believe is her greatest vocal performance. The range and power.
Are you sure you guys did her before? Anyway this is also a cover it was a song by Sting and once he heard her version he said I’ll probably never sing it again because she does it so much better. Unfortunately she passed away much too young from cancer but she’s got fantastic songs out there she covers Aretha she covers like old spirituals does a lot of Bruce there’s tons of stuff out there you could listen to buy her
Please react to her version of Autumn Leaves. Please react to the live version, from Blues Alley. After she passed away, the record company put out a studio version, that was no where near as good. It just didn't have the same passion, as her live version. Great reaction.

a super talent gone way to soon 26 years gone and still as TIMELESS as ever.
Great reaction! Beautiful song!!! Illuminatingly the beauty of reminiscing thoughts!!!
Barley turns gold like wheat does as it ripens. So those fields of barley are fields of gold.
Her rendition of over the rainbow will show u her true talent, u will think about this song differently after hearing it. It shows her real musicianship being over the rainbow has so many covers and version but hers is the most unique. She is captivating watching her perform over the rainbow.
The most pure and beautiful voice to ever grace my ears.
Eva had a great voice. R.I.P. Check out her version of "Over the Rainbow"
This song was written by Sting.
Thanks for your review. xo
Thanks for introducing me to a voice I've never heard. What a gift some people leave behind.
Eva...she was special...and gone far too soon. 🥺
Absolutely beautiful, a treasure. ❤
I agree with you
PLEASE do Wonderful World by her. And please note that she sang that months before her death. One of the most haunting songs I've ever heard.
Great version! She did Sting justice and then some!
One of the things I love about you guys is that you feel the poetry of each song. Maybe not your favorite genre of music but you genuinely listen deep into the effort of the performance.
Yes Eva was an angel of a voice, but what a Guitarist!
Please hear her cover of time after time!!! Super underrated!!!!
I swear I cry every time I hear her angel voice I'll never forget her. If I'm lucky enough I'll see her in fields of gold
It’s a poem by “Robert frost”, nothing gold can stay. Pony boy from the movie “The Outsiders” says it . Many people play this song to that part . Check it out , it very beautiful.
You two should listen to "Autumn Leaves" by EVA. Tragically she died early on from cancer.
(it reminded him of the movement of lovers)
The song was a metaphor describing the deep love he felt for his wife Trudie and their life together over the years.
Eva Cassidy's cover of this song is very moving. Eva also has done phenomenal covers of Somewhere over the Rainbow, and Autumn Leaves.
Just a heads up ... some of the lyrics shown in the video were off. (I never made promises lightly) instead of "like these"
And (when the west wind moves) instead of "west wing".
Unfortunately she passed away much too young from cancer but she’s got fantastic songs out there she covers Aretha she covers like old spirituals does a lot of Bruce there’s tons of stuff out there you could listen to buy her
Other songs by Eva are, Autumn Leaves, Over the Rainbow, Songbird & Danny Boy, just to name few.
One of the greatest voices ever. What’s sad is she never lived to see her fame.
Wonderful cover of a fantastic song by Sting. Thank you
Thanks for listening
Please react to her version of Autumn Leaves. Please react to the live version, from Blues Alley. After she passed away, the record company put out a studio version, that was no where near as good. It just didn't have the same passion, as her live version. Great reaction.
This is actually a cover version of Stings Fields of Gold.
