In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to the sublime rendition of Fields of Gold by Eva Cassidy. The original by Sting is one of his best songs, but I think Eva improves on the original. Take a ride with me through one of the better popular songs of the last 30 years.

That's a beautiful story and would be a credit to both singers - a part of me wants to go verify it. A bigger part doesn't care.
Nope - just going to sit here and enjoy my tears thanking both Sting and Eva and leaving them together in my mind.

My wife was telling me how this is one of her favourite songs (specifically Eva Cassidy's version) literally yesterday. She was 34 when she was diagnosed with Melanoma after our second daughter was born. Thankfully she has so far been doing very well, but it's a life-changing experience. Incredible timing Doug.

Sunscreen is filled with cancerous-causing crap we do not need. TPTB push sunscreen for their nefarious reasons. The sun is our friend, not enemy. General common sense applies when being out in the sun. Long-sleeved white shirt with a broad-brimmed hat will do wonders to prevent sunburn.
Cancer is due to underlying emotional/psychologicl reasons long buried, ie., not addressed, but which must be released and so the release, that energy, emits/develops via what we call "cancer."
Also, many meats and processed foods can create and/or excerbate various dis-eases coupled with our 24/7 lifestyle/culture: it is ALL connected.

Eva's Live at Blues Alley is not only my favorite live album ever, it's one of my favorite albums ever period. Pretty much every song she covers on there (Fields of Gold, People Get Ready, Bridge Over Troubled Water, Take Me To the River) is now my favorite rendition of that song. They recently released a two-disc version called "Nightbird" that's tremendous. Though I do think they did a great job selecting the best cuts for Live at Blues Alley, it's great to hear the full performance and there's still not a bad performance among the 30+ songs. She was truly a peerless interpreter of songs, with an impeccable voice and amazing versatility. I think the lack of success she had during her lifetime is due to people (well, labels) not knowing what to do with someone who was so equally at home in blues, jazz, rock, soul, pop, and everything in-between.

Not to be critical for one thing I think you should realize is that by you playing your piano no matter how great you are it was upstaging the beauty of Eva Cassidy Play the song without you the way we've meant to be played I think people like you get their eagles involved and think you're going to make that song better but you're playing and frankly and annoyed me you're probably a nice man but can we a little bit of insincerity on your part as a composer to superimpose your personal version of Fields of Gold. Next time please sir use a kiss method keep it simple stupid I will not be listening to any of your reviews again but Eva speak for herself not as you accompanying her .

I still love it, though I still get a little watery when I hear it. The thing is, I almost never cry, maybe once every few years. I am a 63-year-old man who is not ashamed to say I cry more often than not listening to her delicate and inspirational interpretations of song after song. As is too often the case, gone too soon . . . underappreciated during her brief life, and finally getting the recognition she deserved.

There is a doco about her story, can't remember if it was a paper one or a video, she wouldn't compromise her musical taste and seemingly random choices of songs that were considered non-commercial in order to be signed to a label. She new as Eric suggests in his comment, that it would have ruined her. Imagine if youtube was around back then! They are both so soulful, sweet, delicate, and natural together as if they were twins, and I listen to them now as a duet. So when you layered on piano, that felt like a disruption for me. Having said that, I am completely jealous of your ability to spontaneously play along like you did. I always wanted to learn piano, but my parents had 5 children so no money for lessons. I also heard how delicately you were playing but it still blocked the guitar a lot. My reccomendation would be that you play videos by themselves the first time. Then you could go back and add your touches to it the second time. What you played was very much agreeable, but loyal Eva fans may not want her versions altered in ANY way. This is true for a lot of fans and their favorite artists. A reaction is a listening activity, right? Then after you have listened once, then "tickle the ivories" all you want. It is YOUR channel and you can obviously proceed however you want. This is just my personal opinion. I am subscribing to you. Do you post any of your own piano recordings? Thank you for reacting to Eva who is a treasure forever with her precious music 🎶💞

I'm a follower of your channel Doug, and I never wrote anything; but the magic atmoshere that this kind of music can create, is the reason we cannot live without music. Have you ever seen a mute movie with not soundtrack? Thanx for sharing Eva Cassidy cover

My wife always tells me this is better than the original, but that’s not possible ;-) It is however the best cover by far, that‘s for sure. 🙏 There are live club recordings on YT, she was brilliant.

Sting was very proprietary about this song. Even he admitted Eva's version brought him to tears.

I absolutely love the metal music covered, but that was a great way to cleanse the palate. So many great seas to sail (musically), and this was certainly a fine voyage.
Will be sure to check her out :)

Doug, once again you give us a better understanding of what music can truly do.
I have only ever seen one reaction to the song Innuendo by Queen, and it was good but I would really enjoy hearing you give your take on such a masterpiece. When the song was recorded, Freddie was Dying! He kept going until and left a treasure trove of outstanding unfinished work. Now we have Maiden Monday, How about Queen Tuesdays?

Hi Doug, thanks for sharing this amazing moment of grace... I discovered Eva only few years after her death. I just cried first time i've heard her voice. At that time I didn't know she was dead... However, hearing this song my blood freezing in a minute. I remember the feeling It was just incredible. We can feel her soul through her voice... It's not with all singers/musicians wich whom we can feel that sensation.
Hope she's now in Paradise, walking in fields of Gold...

To Sting's credit, the lyric-language is incredibly simple and elemental, nearly all single-syllable English words. Perfect for the elemental Eva.

It was very beautiful; I personally love female singers with such beautiful soft voices. In reading "comments" the past few days on the war subject, even myself, a big Floor Jansen fan, had somehow forgotten her song "De Beelden Blijven" (in English "A Song For War Child"). It was written for her and recorded as support for a Dutch charity trying to raise money to send to children who were suffering in the war in Syria, a very good cause. Their organizational title is "War Child Holland". I don't know how I could have been so stupid to have forgotten about it. I though of it when I heard the soft female vocals in this song. Floor's, in Dutch with English subtitles, is at th-cam.com/video/e6-6NVsbg6U/w-d-xo.html. I wouldn't necessarily recommend it for a full review, but it would be well worth a listen on you own sometime, and it is a very worthwhile charity to support. Thanks ...

Eva Cassidy was amazing. Music, to me, is an extension of the soul. It says the things we are too fearful to speak and can cut one to the bone while also offering a healing hand. I like you taking a “quieter” road for a bit. If you haven’t already, check out Nick Drake. He also died quite young and didn’t experience musical acceptance and fame until long after death. It’s sad it had to be that way.

Sorry, as good as you are, you canNOT possibly make it better with your playing -- it distracts. That's how good she is/was! I loved the song, but gave you a DISLIKE ... first ever on an Eva song, because you interfered with the master. Sorry.

Eva Cassidy also covered Fleetwood Mac's "Songbird". Not sure if I've got this right but.... Various artists were involved in a project to cover all/most of the songs from "Rumours". Mick Fleetwood had final say as to which artists' versions went on the album. Apparently Mick said that if he would have heard Eva's take of "Songbird", he would put that on and left off The Corrs "Dreams". He said that he made an error in his choice.
My favourite Eva Cassidy cover is "Dark End Of The Street" (Chips Moman/Dan Penn). So much soul and emotion, and so much talent lost so soon. Thank you Eva (RIP) for sharing your music with the World.

Wonderful reaction to one of my favorite artists. Somewhere over the Rainbow is legendary also! Great piano by the way!
If you like Eva, I encourage you to check out 15 yr old Norwegian Angelina Jordan, the barefoot princess. She was in the studio at 6! She won Norway's Got Talent at 7! She was a child prodigy. She has recorded over 135 covers and originals chronologically from ages 6 to 15, listed on Rusty Shackleford's TH-cam page.
She sings any genre, but her roots are in the classics, jazz, and soul. Her influences include Billie Holiday, Etta James, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra, and many more. Very unusual for a young girl. At 15, she sings like a 40 yr old. She has online at age 9 a performance of I Put a Spell on You that will floor you! It is the best vocal performance ever by a 9 yr old in the opinion of most. (Black and white video)
Of most interest, with your affinity for Fields of Gold, you would absolutely appreciate Angelina's Song For A. It was written for Angelina by Nicholas Cartosio based on a poem by Robert Burns and is a 1700s poem and melody. It is gorgeous and her angelic voice is innocent yet sensual and filled with emotion. Here is the link

Such a beautiful, rich voice. Normally singers doing huge amounts of rubato in their interpretation and being way behind the beat etc winds me up no end, but somehow she manages to do it not only without triggering my musical OCD but in the process makes the song sound even better. It's like she's way off but yet it still fits. A rare talent indeed.

I’m not a fan of reaction videos where the presenter plays along, seemingly for their own enjoyment. I stopped watching as soon as I realized that’s what was going on. Rick Beato does it to illustrate what the artist is doing, which is great. With this video it seems like you lured me in to watch you play the piano. Pass.
