Danny Boy is a farewell song from a father saying goodbye to his son as goes off to war. The father is not sure he will be alive when his son returns from the war and if the son returns from the war? It is an okd traditional Irish folksong. Probably the most famous Irish song ever.

Before she stepped into a recording studio, she paced for an hour before finally entering the studio. The recording engineer thought she might be homeless. She proceeded to record numerous songs in a brief period, including Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The engineer was blown away by that song, sent a copy quickly to a DJ in London. He was blown away. In his next set he squeezed in Over the Rainbow, put in on the air...and it was a hit overnight. Her version of the song is the bumper music to Britain’s Got Talent.

I love how you guys get to the core of something when you react to it. Spot-on about the song's lyrics. And I agree - there's something about her voice that is strong yet fragile like glass at the same time.
I absolutely love her guitar ballads, but maybe when you listen to Eva Cassidy again you'll want a break from having your heart ripped out lol? Don't get me wrong, she is best known (and for good reason) for her acoustic covers (and that's her arranging and playing the guitar too!) but you should also see her incredible GENRE RANGE. She sang rock, gospel, jazz, and all with the same "getting at the core of the song" across all these genres.
On top of that, she changed the songs as she sang them, and her phrasing and control of her voice touch each song to its core. When she covers a song, hers sounds like the definitive version.
One song that shows that I think shows her range is "YOU'VE CHANGED," which is a jazz or blues song.
Also read a bio of her online, she was never famous during her lifetime and it makes you really appreciate her. What a loss! ='(

Her take on BLUES EYES CRYING IN THE RAIN is a soaring tribute to Eva Cassidy. She never aimed for stardom. Eva only wanted to play music her way which was at odds with record company moguls. Just her and the guitar. But it wasn't considered commercial enough to sell. Eva didn't want to be packaged and sold. She wanted to be honest. And she was. And she was also gone to soon.

I came here from watching your Celtic Women 'You Raise Me Up' video after searching to see if you had done Austin Brown's cover of Danny Boy. Some say the tune is the same, but it really isn't. I had an Irish stepfather, so I got buried with ALL things of The Emerald Isle. I've heard this song before but usually by Irish tenors. But I've NEVER heard it more beautifully sung than this. THANK YOU, Jay and Miss Amber for your reaction to this!

Eva Cassidy is local to my area. What a stunning voice, only heard by many, after she passed so early in her life. 😥. Beautiful reaction. Her "Golden Thread" gospel-like song she hits highs, even high for Eva.

Never having heard of her and after listening to “Danny Boy” on your reaction channel, I looked up information about Eva Cassidy online. She was found to have melanoma throughout her bones for which nothing could be done. Three months after the diagnosis, she died of the advanced cancer at the age of 33. She left a legacy of beautiful music.

Fields of Gold was originally sung by Sting but for me, Eva makes it her own. It would be lovely to hear it on your channel.

I've just listened to Elvis singing DANNY BOY and it's beautiful too
If you can find time please react to Elvis singing it too, it's so beautiful, you won't regret it.
I love watching your reactions, well done...

For a different Eva Cassidy experience, check out another live performance at a club called “Pearl’s” with the song,”San Francisco Bay Blues”. Her bluesy acoustic guitar was wonderful and her voice…perfect! I wanted to be able to go back in time and “hush” the patrons who we’re talking through this, and tell them that, one day, they would regret not giving their full attention to this special performer! She was just wonderful!❤️

For me it is the sound of those left behind when so many thousands left Ireland during the famine, knowing that those they left behind may not be there should they ever return. The sad victims of the famine were indeed warmer and sweeter underground then they had been above ground when there was nothing to eat and no coal to burn. Breaks my heart every time.

Eva Cassidy is absolutely perfect for this song! Her voice is extraordinary, but her acoustic guitar on this is nothing short of remarkable too. This is from her album "Imagine". The fiddle player on the album was her younger brother - Dan. Thanks for reviewing this song.

Jay and Amber, I have been watching this so human and soul filled channel for sometime now but never have I felt closer to the two of you until this song. I cried when she passed at 33 just like I did when my mother died when I was 16. Thank you for providing this space for me to let go of my loss again.

My grandma's great grandma came over during the great hunger as child and lived here long enough for my grandmother to know her as a small child. so it would be my great great great grandma. and in her last years there was like a radio show that would come on and have Irish sing alongs and they would always sing Danny Boy and my GGG Grandma would sit inches away from the radio with her hand on it (she was blind in her old age) and bawl her eyes out in grief over all the loved ones and family left behind in Ireland. It made a huge impact on my grandmother and Danny Boy became her favorite songs. Naturally she played it all time in her house and recently it was played as we carried out of the church for her funeral. Its amazing to me the impact and poignancy this song has spanning so many generations.

This was written in 1913. There are various conjectures about the meaning of "Danny Boy". Some interpret the song to be a message from a parent to a son going off to war or participating in the Irish uprising (as suggested by the reference to "pipes calling glen to glen") or emigrating as part of the Irish diaspora

    • @georgebarnes8163
      @georgebarnes8163 2 ปีที่แล้ว

It was written by Fredrick Weatherly upon the death of his son and has nothing to do with Ireland.

@@georgebarnes8163the Londonderry Air is Irish. English words Irish tune so lets go halvo halvo as we would say as kids if one had sweets & the other hadnt. The Pipes calling was a cry to fight & glen to glen would refer to Iteland or Scotland so perhaps we should go thirdo thirdo. It is tegarded the world over as An Irish song but who cares when you can hear the putity of Eva's voice so deep down in the soul. Slainte leat. which doesnt mean cheers but health to you which I say to you from the bottom of my soul

@@mauraorourke9849 LOL, the Irish would never ever use the term Londonderry, they hate that British city and county. The song Danny Boy is 100% English and has nothing to do with Ireland or the Irish. By the way the term you were looking for is "Slan leat" not Slainte leat.

@@georgebarnes8163 well Im Irish & I used it. Thats what the tune is called probably written after the Ulster Plantation. You are correct we call the city Derry.. ive never known it as anything else. Even across the border its called Derry except for a few diehards. No politics here George because if I start I wont stop. I did not say slan leat because that is goodbye which I never use because its forever. We might want to challenge each other again. I still say Irish air for Danny Boy so its halvo halvo. I wished you health which I meant sincerely
