Just days before she died, she sang "what a wonderful world" in a live performance. She was so weak they had to help her on stage - and that was the song she chose. What a beautiful soul!

Eva didn't actually want to do this recording because she was still getting over a cold and was worried her voice wouldn't stand up. You can actually hear a slight break off at the end of a few lines BUT she had THE most perfect voice in my opinion, with perfect control. perfect pitch, beautiful vibrato and an emotional connection with the song that reached out and grabbed listeners hearts like no one else was capable of . Sadly, sadly missed by millions. The world would be a much better place if she was still around! And a beautiful guitar player :)
She took an iconic song and made it her own. Mick Fleetwood was trying to help her get recorded (because at this time she didn’t have a record deal yet: it was her friends, family, and fans created what music was recorded). She wasn’t going to take the first record deal because the record companies tried to slot her into a category, which she felt confined. She wanted to play songs that she pour her heart and soul in it, so she defied category: Mick Fleetwood admired her integrity. Then she got cancer and died shortly after, with no record deal. Can you imagine what she would sound like in a professional studio, allowed to play her songs her way, and what more songs she could’ve covered? An angel voice, and a guitar playing to match that voice.

That ending gets me every time, and I've heard this one many times. Her voice is just so magnificent that we often forget that is her playing guitar, and that is all the accompaniment that is going on, and yet, more powerful than any band with drums, bass and 100 watt marshalls! Harold Arlen wrote this song in 1939, the beginning of the Great Depression, in America. The song reflects the sadness and hard times with the hope of happiness and better times to come. I have never heard anyone sing this song with such emotion, tenderness and beauty. What a GREAT talent lost to soon. We are so fortunate to have this video.
1939 was virtually the end of the Great Depression; within a year the US was on a war footing and within two years it was at war. 1929 is generally considered to be the beginning of the Depression.

Rest in Peace, sweet, beloved Eva as you sing with the angels 'over the rainbow'. She's been my favorite female vocalist ever since I heard her sing many years ago. Her talent was incomparable and her legacy will endure due to her many fans - many, many discovering her gift after her early death.
Eva Marie Cassidy is an American singer, born February 2, 1963 in Washington and died November 2, 1996 in Bowie, Maryland.... for info: big emotion for me who had known her to see young people again today watching her songs because she also had a sublime voice and was also a great stars .
Have been on this earth for over sixty yrs and came across this lady 25 yrs ago and to this day my thoughts have never changed she was a master of her art and I have never come across a greater artist, thank god she left her mark for so many to hear her artistry, though sadly lost at a young age to cancer . God bless Eva and thank you your music hits the soul . X
This is my absolute favourite version of this song. I remember listening to it on repeat for hours on an international flight once. The tragedy is that music executives didn’t think she deserved to be heard until after she passed. They sure got that wrong.
IMO Eva's best version of this song is on the Songbird album. She has a pretty bad cold on the night she recorded this album (Live at Blues Alley) and she had to reign in her voice a bit to keep it from cracking.
I live in the area where Eva lived. I had never seen her in concert. But we followed her a lot on the local music scene. One of my friends said let’s go see Eva tonight. I said no we can catch her another time. This was the night of the concert.
I was introduced to Evas work back in 2006, thanks to a dear American friend, who now herself is no longer with us. Thanks Cheryl for bringing Eva into my life.
You're one of the few that really can appreciate what a talent Eva was. Because most people don't know how good she was on guitar. Her subtle accents were spot on! The emotion she evoked between her voice and her guitar was unmatched. Most all of her recordings were live. The first time I ever cried because of a song, was when I heard her play Autumn Leaves. I was speechless.
her dynamic phrasing simultaneously on both guitar and voice - so clean, pure, intense. She emanates waves of emotion - and her controlled crescendo/decrescendo at the song's peak just *breaks* you.
Cried with you bud... this shows all.when u r that talented all you need is her voice and quitar... perfection.. breaks me every time as I go through bone marrow disease..... ❤
I’ve been listening to this beautiful woman for years. All of her songs are true to the craft that only Eva could do. She will be forever remembered and missed
She is a consummate artist!! Not only are her vocals stellar, but her guitar accompaniment is nothing short of perfection! I have never heard so much emotion conveyed in this song. It's a truly personal interpretation -- she makes the song her own -- I forget any other singer's previous version, including Judy Garland's.
Welcome to the magic of Eva. She was an angel on earth. We miss her greatly, but she left us with the gift of her heart in her music. You can't listen to this and not feel it deeply within your soul and be moved to tears. She speaks love straight to your heart. We understand that we all share the same challenges and pain in the core of our being and hope for love and joy when we sit together and listen to her. She helps us see our humanity, gives us a big angelic hug, and helps us feel the love and connectedness between us. She also worked in the nursery in my home town and was as sweet and humble as she appears here. And fought the record companies who wanted to change her to get her sign with them. She stood up for what she believed in and ultimately produced her own music. She was ahead of her time in so many ways. She's greatly missed, but lives on in all of us who her music has touched including every famous singer who has come after her. You'll hear Adele say that Eva was one of her biggest inspirations and you can hear a little of Eva in her voice. Thanks for sharing the magic of Eva with the world.
I discovered Eva about 2001..She grew up not far from where I did in Maryland..We were close in age..I wish I knew of her when she was alive, perhaps I could have seen her live. Thank God for her great talent..
Thank you for the reverence you accorded to perhaps one of THE greatest vocalists of our times - for me, no one has elicited such genuinely deep emotions as Eva Cassidy has. "They" say "only the good die young" . . . so true, certainly in Eva's case for sure. SO much pure joy mixed in with SUCH emotion going STRAIGHT to the heart. This is love at its best.

1939 was virtually the end of the Great Depression; within a year the US was on a war footing and within two years it was at war. 1929 is generally considered to be the beginning of the Depression.
Paused at 5.27. It will not come to pass with the greatest respect... Melocholy voice perhaps? Her guitar cries.. Just as we do.
Please, I'm not trying to be rude but I cannot comprehend why you're only listening to this now... I'm 36 and this was an album I bought when I was 15. Eva went through absolute hell. Eeeeva not Ever, She passed away aged 33 from cancer. What a talent. Much of it undisclosed until after her death. Oh my goodness. "And the dreams"... I saw your face.... Beautiful. 🙏🏻🤜🏻🤛🏽💛 Brother, I'll hold you and clap 👏👏👏... May you be blessed always in all ways 🌹
Thank you for your reaction to, in my opinion, the most beautiful thing that has ever been recorded 😇🌈😇
I can't listen to Eva's version of Over The Rainbow without having tears stream down my cheeks...it's just that beautiful and emotional.
She's found her Rainbow 🌈she makes you believe everword she's singing& plays though you're Heart as well as her's. Amazing women gone to soon! It brings hope & love it's going to be okay~🎸 there's a real place over the rainbow 🌈
A real masterpiece. Her guitar work gets overshadowed by her incredible singing.
I’ve always loved that little break in her voice on that last note💜🧡
That was very observant and well said: "two voices" - Eva and her guitar. I'd never heard her before. She's very expressive.
Please do more Eva Cassidy.
Eva died just several months after this performance at the age of 33. She did not gain the worldwide Fame until after her death, and sold over 10 million records. She was on her way to be coming one of the best female vocalists ever.
She was not seeking worldwide fame, everyone said she was very private and definitely just preferred to do her singing the way she wanted.
Seeking world wide fame? You don’t know Eva
@@cherylq7183 perhaps seeking was the wrong word. What I intended is that she did not achieve worldwide Fame until after her death, whether or not she wanted it
and, she made it!
@@jamesrogers2963 Yes she did James! It's so sad that she didn't live to see it. Eva was definitely one of a kind, with a voice that you could identify while blindfolded.
The most meaningful song of my life. Her version will be played at my funeral.
First time I heard that voice was on "Sunday Morning with Charles Osgood", about 3 years after she died. Went out and bought her albums. Another meaningful song she does is "Tall Trees in Georgia". Great post.
Breaks my heart every time I listen to her.
She was a ‘natural child of music!’ And especially now she Rests in Music!
I have all of her CDs. She sings directly to your soul.
A beautiful young lady with only her voice and guitar brings real people to tears, rest in peace.
From this same landmark concert, 'Autumn Leaves' Harri - what a loss to music this lady was, still influencing people and mourned to this day.
I was introduced to Evas work back in 2006, thanks to a dear American friend, who now herself is no longer with us. Thanks Cheryl for bringing Eva into my life.
Here for such short time but long enough to touch our hearts
Heartbreakingly beautiful. God bless you Eva ♥️
That was precious, very well done.
An object lesson on how to take a well known song and turn it into something magnificently different. Astonishing.
One of my top 10 most beautiful performances of all my 62 years!! God BLESS you Eva.
Love the Mills Brorhers .
Thank you what absolutely love It.❤❤❤😊😊😊
Oh man I feel the same way!! I get tears in my eyes listening to her sing this song!
Cried with you bud... this shows all.when u r that talented all you need is her voice and quitar... perfection.. breaks me every time as I go through bone marrow disease..... ❤
If there Is a more beautiful, heartfelt, emotional performance .... I've not seen it.
I do agree with you! A good second is Adam Lambert singing Believe toCher at the Kennedy Center honors.
incredible.......she gets me every time, choke...too often great artist are gone before they become known. Love her.
‘Songbird’ is my favourite Eva Cassidy song, incredible vocals combined with beautiful words.
I’ve been listening to this beautiful woman for years. All of her songs are true to the craft that only Eva could do. She will be forever remembered and missed
Thank you for keeping her memory alive, and thank you Britain for giving her a gold album! Peace.
You’re a beautiful soul. Bless you brother.
Can we also appreciate her guitar skills and arrangements, she was just so talented..❤❤
Harri..you're A Strong, Valued Mensch; when th lots more rewarding work ahead..Thanks Harri..
The voice of an angel. And Harri, that was a beautiful reaction.
I am not worthy of listenening to something so beautiful and perfect.
So beautiful, gave me goosebumps, best version EVER!!
Chills
I love it when somebody new discovers Eva! I catch emotions every time I listen to her. Her voice is like a soft cloud that's the best way to but it.
Her voice is so clear that it's simply amazing, A sober delivery that cuts right to your soul.
The voice of an Angel, 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
