In songs like this and Lisztomania, he is singing along with himself, to create that doubling effect that other guy mentioned. It's to keep him in key, and to thicken the sound. You'll hear times hes off pitch, or will cut out and let the track play more. It's a very smart and useful tool!

Check out the performance of this song from Studio Q. The vocals are clear and unfiltered, the guitar is acoustic and there are no drums. You can here what a beautiful song it is. I like it both ways.

+Maxton Barber yeah max, ive got a ve-20 bossvoice pedal, it simulates doubler, sounds fine when i cover phoenix in my band. but thommas sounds like awesomeness alive, this is curious.

The drummer is always bad a**. He always plays with so much enthusiasm. Check their Letterman performance of 1901.
I don't think that's a tc helicon that he's messing with...I believe that's just the mix in his head phones. He does have some pedals at his feet though. Could it be chorus or phaser? (His voice sounds slightly layered, which you could achieve with one of those helicon voice effects... i just don't see one sitting out, they're pretty distinct looking blue or white pedals, wider than a normal pedal.) I'd like to know what effects this guy uses because he always sounds flawless live.

David B J Old comment, but just wanted to clear up that they are not playback. He’s using an effect pedal on his voice that mimics the sound of a double track. The effect processor is called the tc-helicon VoiceLive Touch 2
