This mix is mind blowing. I found out late that he passed away. So sad. I return to this video series often to try and figure out how he got such amazing sounds. He was on another lever and seemed so humble. RIP a true inspiration.
Oh man, its so upsetting to learn that he had passed. Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is one of my favorite records and further, I just learned that he had produced and mixed Tourist History by Two Door Cinema Club, which likewise has absolutely brilliant production. RIP Philippe
RIP Monsieur Philippe Zdar ! J'ai du mal à le croire. J'adorais et je continuerai à aimer et à tirer des leçons de ce que j'ai pu apprendre. Merci infiniment.
I really am in disbelief that he is gone. I hope some peace is found some how. He left his mark on the music world and inspired me to no end. but will be sorely missed. Rip Philippe
Creating Musics is nothing but trial and error if you’re willing to put yourself through that constant feeling of trying to solve a puzzle then it’s a good field to be in.
He was speaking about the SSL channel strip (that has, filters, compressor, expander/limiter and eq) when he changed his mind from the SSL bus Comp to the one included in the channel strip. And yes, for mixing a good record you need much more than just a console
his accent was funny and cool at the same time, haha. May he be remembered for his works and his coolness. Artists like him don't happen to the history too often.
@@ozymandias2726 Wow, I knew he had an accidental fall but not until reading this did I ever know the circumstances of _how._ Thank you, I'm glad to finally know what happened. What an awful tragedy. It's hard not to ask "what if?" in regard to what he would have worked on coming off the heels of the incredible work he did on the _Phoenix_ record and the rightful recognition he received from it.
Actually- He's summing the mix to mono. This is done often in mixing because something can sound great in stereo but introduce phase cancellation in mono. As much as we want to listen to stereo mixes, most of the time we hear hit songs it's not perfectly between stereo speakers, and we generally get a mono-ish mix. You want to make sure the mix sounds great on a clock radio as well as in a studio, and everything in between.
Yep- looks like it's the "external to monitors" button. It's an analog console, so I'm not sure where the rough mix would be coming from, or why it would sound mono. Maybe it's a mix fed from pro-tools. But getting to the detail, I guess the question is about the "knob", not the button anyway, which controls the level of the main control room monitors.
i think he means when hes saying . im not here right now to have fun with all my equipment but to setup the equipment beforehand to really lose myself in the mixing process and enjoy myself.
That thought crossed my mind as well. He sure looks very tired in this video. I thought he he meant with "tripping" that it is like going into the details and getting in to the repetition mode for hours. "I am not floating around in time, i am just putting the little things together." I could be wrong because the other replies leave a very clear explenation of the language/ translation issue.
Pan tracks to the left and right and make your way to the middle of the spectrum. Don’t stack all tracks exclusively on either end but blend them on to the stereo spectrum.

This is one of my favourite videos on TH-cam. I always come back to it and it always inspires me. RIP Philippe.
One of the best produced albums I've ever heard, I love it so much

I'd never heard of Zdar until this video popped up in my feed -- super interesting and he was obviously amazing at his craft. And he's gone,....,....
Same here with me.
I love phoenix I love this guy attitude. I want to be Philippe Zdar when I grow up.
Un des meilleurs producteurs français s'en est allé. Repose en paix.
RIP, legendary man. Legendary studio.
Amazing, and WAP is an amazing sounding record all the way through
Poorly aged comment
@@jamesblair2713 Ha!
oh my god ahahah unfortunate acronym
For those who were wondering he's talking about 'Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix', not that other WAP.

Hypnotisant. M. ZDHAR me fait découvrir le monde du mixage. C'est fabuleux. R.I.P.

RIP monsieur Zdar, great lessons, attitude and life philosophy. Thanks for this video MWTM 😉

That snare! 😍 thanks master zdar..for ever🙏
Cartier watch and Klein & Hummel-- this dude is classy as can be! 😍
“You can mix a record on only this!” Really? On JUST that massive SSL?
xaqary yes
I'd hope you could mix a record on that or else that's a very large item to have in your room
He was talking about just mixing on the computer

oh my god. i loved this video so much. not only because this is one of my favorite albums of all time but because i learned SO much
was just waiting for the bass to come in the whole time
Even the best emulations don’t quite have that upper midrange sweetness that an SSL desk has....though UAD is getting very close.
extremely cool.
thank you, and rest in peace mr. Zdar.

You dont need ALL of this (refers to his outboard gear). You can mix with ONLY this (refers to his giant SSL console)

What happened?
@@dylanbaler2872 He was waiving goodbye to friends at his balcony and the gardtrail gave way so he fell. This was in Paris last year.

Hi There! He's comparing his mix with the rough mix.
Ahh makes sense, thanks so much! Is there a way for me to "buy" just this episode of Phillipe Zdar, instead of paying for a full membership?

The reverb he adds in the intro, is that mono or stereo reverb? And it's applied through a bus right?
quelle énorme perte! Il était le meilleur tout simplement. Merci Philippe, trop triste...
The helios eq is an asmr eq:P

is he talking about tripping on drugs at the end lol?
right??? LOL
i think he means when hes saying . im not here right now to have fun with all my equipment but to setup the equipment beforehand to really lose myself in the mixing process and enjoy myself.
He does mean that, he is translating in his head from french to english... In french we say "trip" as having an awesome time! @@MrSookazz

Whats the button he's pressing on the desk at 5:55 that makes it sound all muddy for a min? Some kind of phasey/eq thing? Thanks!
It will be the rough mix from the producer.
Can someone explain what he meant with regards to panning?
Pan tracks to the left and right and make your way to the middle of the spectrum. Don’t stack all tracks exclusively on either end but blend them on to the stereo spectrum.
@@JC-or4wf so basically don't hard pan everything?

At the end, was he saying that he was tripping? Like as on drugs? It's so funny . I really want to know what he was saying

FAST EQ????????
Yup. Some EQs don't react right away to the frequency they're supposed to cut or boost. I just learned about this the other day.
