Man, having grown up with hundreds of hours just VIBING across Banjo-Kazooie and Tooie, I think it's understated how much polish and refinement the whole genre took from those games in particular.
Expressive character acting, bouncy and fun models, nevermind the mechanical changes that took until Mario Odyssey for Nintendo to cave in on and respect. It's telling that other collect-a-thons like Jak & Daxter immediately went got similar styles because that flow of being in a level and only leaving when you wanted felt far more organic and never let you lose progress.
Really, Rare just understood that kids would get lost and still have fun in their easy to understand worlds with great landmarks and simple geometry.
A part of me really does hope Playtonic & Rare collaborate for a remake or new game all things considered. Who knows, maybe we can come full circle and have Yooka-Laylee meet the bear and bird.
Either way, I couldn't agree more on the world needing more Banjo.

A new Banjo-Kazooie game would definitely be considered the fourth one. Rare's stance on the matter has been perfectly clear on Nuts & Bolts being a direct, canon sequel to Tooie, and that a future game would not be called "Threeie" (pretty sure Mr. Gregg Mayles himself said that as matter of fact).

If Yooka Laylee did better, I wonder if it would have encouraged Microsoft to push out a new Banjo Kazooie game. There was so much hype leading up to it but once it came out it just flopped.

There's a lot of 64 games I'd like to see done. Banjo is one, Gex (which I've seen rumors about), Rocket: Robot On Wheels and Space Station: Silicon Valley. Maybe even the Turok games as well. And although not as old, Fur Fighters for the DreamCast/PS2 I'd love an updated port for that, I always hated it didn't get it's sequel either. I love the updated graphics because since I was 18 I've had health issues that have affected my eyesight so the updated graphics helps a lot. A note that a lot of people seem to miss - the Xbox 360 versions of Banjo Kazooie/Tooie were mild remasters. The graphics had been upscaled and they introduced a version of Stop N Swop where collecting items in one gave you stuff in the other, ending in you getting profile pictures and such. Obviously not the original intention or process but it was nice for them to put it in regardless. They also altered the way notes collection worked, the pickups were permanent and did not have to be recollected if you died, unlike the original. (this accidentally introduced a nasty bug where if you watched a particular demo video on the title screen where Banjo picks up a note it wouldn't spawn in the level, thankfully it was patched)

I don't think they will never make a new Banjo-Kazooie, and I doubt that they will ever do a remaster. One of the key problems, I believe, is that no one can agree on what made Banjo-Kazooie THE SERIES great. To me, Banjo-Kazooie 1 was great because it was lighthearted, had a simple premise, the worlds were bright and fun, and the game was just a joy to play through. I personally believe they lost the plot immediately, as Banjo-Tooie was darker, more convoluted, bigger without being better, less aesthetically pleasing, more dour, and just generally not fun. The series itself has an identity/branding problem.
There is a huge swath of fans that prefer Banjo-Tooie over BK. Returning to something that is more BK than BT would upset BT fans, and they would say the series took a step backwards, while making a game more like BT would be less appealing to fans like me that love the first one, and we'd say the devs forgot what made the original BK great. On top of that, Nuts & Bolts (which, to my understanding, is almost universally hated by fans of BK and BT because it has nothing to do gameplay-wise with the first two games) still has its own group of fans that are young enough to have missed the first entries and love the vehicle creation system. N&B was really ahead of its time, with Minecraft coming out just a few years later. To make things more convoluted, Playtonic's Yooka-Laylee, which was made by a bunch of ex-Rare people that worked on the first two Banjo-Kazooies, was not well received at all. YL captured none of the charm or fun that made people love the BK games, and even though it was crowd funded, it still disappointed fans (it didn't help that it was being pushed as the spiritual successor to Banjo-Kazooie). There were numerous interviews with the devs after its release documenting their disappointment and frustration that people did not like Yooka-Laylee.
We're 26 years out now from the original Banjo-Kazooie, and 3D platformers are practically dead. Remasters like Crash and Spyro were well received by fans, but did not bring in loads of money. Greg Mayles is entirely too busy making bank with Sea of Thieves to care about BK, and I don't think he ever really cared that much about the series anyways. As the head of Rare, the fate of the series is up to him. That Microsoft, with its unending supply of money, hasn't done squat with the series in almost 2 decades since Nuts & Bolts should show how disinterested they are in ever doing anything with the franchise. They will dangle merchandise and tease appearances like in Smash Bros, but I doubt we will ever see anything. I would love to eat crow on this, but Banjo-Kazooie is likely dead.
I think you can still get Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie on Xbox Live, and although the ports are a bit jank, it at least runs better than the N64 version's 24 fps.
