    You have SUCH a good point. When I've said to someone, "I'm diabetic," or "I can't eat nuts or seeds," no one has ever said, "Really? Are you sure? Are you faking it?" No one has ever accused my friend who has cancer of faking his cancer. No one has ever questioned the validity of another friend's allergy to seafood.
    But the minute someone says they have something like depression or DID or PTSD or Bipolar Disorder....suddenly everyone is a psychologist who thinks they have not only the RIGHT but the ABILITY to question it.

    • @oodledoodle
      @oodledoodle 4 ปีที่แล้ว +244

      Whilst I agree with you for the most part (with the questioning of mental health issues) I have to say that people struggle to believe my milk allergy. To the point where I've had people put milk in my food to "trick" me or "catch me out". I have huge trust issues now and don't usually let anyone go near my food or drinks.

    • @macaronicheese8721
      @macaronicheese8721 4 ปีที่แล้ว +121

      I think it's partially due to the fact there are those (for whatever reason idk) that wish they had some sort of mental illness to be "different" or "unique" and glamourize them, leading to people claiming they have something they actually dont- which makes it harder for people to trust when they say "I have depression" "I have anxiety", they'll doubt you, because they've seen people faking it online many times (especially when people say they have something but was never diagnosed) so it's super super unfortunate. I've never had any one really question my issues I got going on so I'm grateful for that. Hopefully the world becomes nothing but more understanding of each other 😅

    • @xzonia1
      @xzonia1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +75

      I've actually had people openly doubt my allergies to me and tell me I must be faking because sometimes I get really ill and other times I don't at all (allergies do not cause a reaction 100% of the time). I also have a breathing condition, and doctors don't have a name for it (yet), and sometimes people think I'm faking that too. So it does happen with other medical conditions, but cancer was a great example she picked because I don't know anyone who doubts a person when they say they have that.

We think that if she accepts that I have experienced trauma, she'll have to acknowledge the abuse that my father and her have placed on me. How their own parents abused them has now transfered onto me. How horrifically they raised me lead to such a horrible disorder to live with. @DJ Warning I've had bipolar for 40 years! I've been to several funerals, including my 21 year old son's. There IS a difference between circumstantial depression and a severe physiological chemical imbalance induced depressive dysphoria. You know neither are connected when you have both been dealt a severe life blows like deaths in the family/friends, and can clearly recognize your bipolar cycle's eb and flow simultaneously. I actually came out of clinical depression during the week of my Son's passing, but certainly was in mourning depression for nearly two years!

Watching this channel and reading the comments really helps me to try to validate my right to show my emotions and take care of them. I also was not allowed to cry in my home and since i moved out im feeling very weird, im confused all the time and i dont know how to act because all the coping mechanisms i had at home dont serve me outside of it but i cant get rid of them even when theyre destructive to me. I become lonely very quickly too but its hard for me to connect and open up before others, its hard for me to cry in front of ppl and show any signs of struggle actually, it comes with a lot of shame and self doubt. I sometimes forget i just had a rough start in childhood and beat myself up for being „problematic”. Idk what to do sometimes, u cant expect all ur friends to always be attentive to u and therapy is expensive, i can afford going only very rarely. Im trying to figure this all out. A dear friend of mine got diagnosed pretty late. She is actually the only one of triplets who got diagnosed with DID. Although they all had to experience the same awfull things each one of the three coped differently with the trauma.
    She is now in her late 50s and back when the first symptoms could be seen from the outside, no one knew anything about DID, which made it pretty difficult to get her help or to understand what's actually happening at all.
    We don't talk about it a lot as I don't want to trigger her in any way. The only thing I know is her having barely any amnesia anymore. But it took her a very long time to get to that point of "healing", if you could call it like that.
    She's a very sweet, loving and wise person and I'm more than happy to have her as a friend.

    I feel like thinking "This could never happen to me/ I can't have this disorder." comes part and parcel with dissociative trauma disorders because the brain is trying shield you from the memories of the trauma. Thank you for bringing up the bit about alters becoming more "vocal" once you are in a safe place -- I am in the process of trying to figure out whether or not I has OSDD and did not become aware of my other parts until I was finally in a place were I no longer had to constantly look over my shoulder, where I could finally fully relax. I think that is why some of them have started to act out the way they have because their former duties and world view have been thrown into disarray now that we are in a safe place for once in our lives. Your videos have always been such a great help.

    • @havendidit
      @havendidit 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @Radadada Bladada “Other Specified Dissociative Disorder” - it’s basically the catch-all term for dissociative conditions that don’t fully match the diagnostic criteria for DID. For example, OSDD type 1b is very similar to DID but there’s either no or not much amnesia between the alters and type 1a is also very similar to DID but the alters aren’t as distinct as in a DID system (might be older or younger versions of the host rather than being fully separate people), whereas OSDD type 4 doesn’t have as much to do with the creation of alters but has a whole lot to do with dissociation and amnesia. Usually when people talk about OSDD though (especially in system communities) they’re just referring to type 1

      @Lilymoon I didn't got in a "life threatening" situation but my ex, at some point, started to talk about her... alter (we didn't even know at the time any terminology, you tube was in =3 times) it was only one, I believe there was never any amnesia barriers. I tried to "match up" and convinced myself I had an alter too. Again, there were no amnesia barriers, and this was around 15/16yo. A few months before our 3 y relationship totally collapsed she admitted "we and our alters were the same". That's not how I've felt ever. My alter was so different from me. This still gives me chills and it's why I've been looking so much to learn about DID. The first time I found Multiplicity and me I totally had an anxiety attack specially meeting Ed. Recently I watched the documentary about Gypsy Rose Blanchard and I totally had an anxiety attack when she mentions her previous relationship which involves a system she dated and the personas she created to fit with that system...
      Sorry for the long text, I guess this felt like a safe space but what I meant was - she totally manipulated me to get from me what she wanted - personality traits I didn't have and I couldn't give her. I was manipulated that entire time, I cried so much..

My dog helps me by alerting to symptoms of my anxiety that I do not notice so that I can change the behaviors. If I don't change my behaviors it often leads to an anxiety attack. He also does something called "block" where he basically blocks either the front of me, one of the sides, or the back of me. This is so that I have space in between me and everyone else wherever I go. Another thing is "exit" or "find (caretaker or friend)". If I am panicking I cannot think so I say this if I need him to guide me someone. "So what if they are faking, it will come to light."
    "But what if they're not."
    I had a fenceline position on this leaning toward skepticism. Because there are people with sincere and genuine disorders that are placed in a bad light or a stigma as a result of 'Faking'. But I'm convinced by your point. You've changed my mind. It's better to live and let live. The damage that occurs as a result of skepticism may very well outweigh the damage done by faking a disorder. I agree with that.
    If they are faking, who cares. Let them live their life. I guess I don't think it's a good investment of time and energy. Is it really THAT big a deal to me? No, not for me personally. It's not a big deal, especially when I have more pressing matters like bills, my career, a family.

    People sometimes try to invalidate things because they "only" affect a small percent of the population.

      And that’s the low end. The higher estimates put it as 2% or 3%. As a result, it affects from _70-210 million people._
      That’s not even counting the other, related disorders like Unspecified Dissociative Disorder or OSDD1, both of which function extremely similarly
      I’m going to come back to this and add that if the higher end is true than DID affects roughly the population of Brazil, and if it’s the lower end it affects more people than everyone in the UK. This isn’t a small side thing to be taken lightly, this is as common as living in the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    I just need to get this off my chest. I'm very confused about whether or not I have/had DID. Several years ago I was convinced I had DID, even my therapist believed me. I had some communication with my alters and they felt so real to me. I remember having panic attacks and then being pulled away to a safe place while someone else took over. Sometimes I would know what was happening while I was gone and sometimes I wouldn't.
    What makes me question everything is the fact that they all went away. I was with a guy at the time who was somewhat abusive and when he saw me switching he would grab me and beg me not to leave him. After a little while of this I couldn't switch anymore, I couldn't hear them, I couldn't communicate with them at all. They were just gone, and I never heard from them again.
    So now I wonder if it was ever real at all. If they were real then how could they just disappear? If anyone has any thoughts on this I'd love to know.
    Thank you.

    Just recently discovered your channel thanks to youtube, and I've been binge-watching every video you've made so far. Watching you made me realize a lot of important things, and I wanted to thank you all for that - not specifically speaking about This one video in particular, but all of them, I'm writing this comment here because it's the newest one.
    I am not part of a system, but I had a long-term relationship with a girl I loved deeply, who was. She never told me, and I don't think she ever realized it herself, due to lack of information / studies on the topic back then. We were together for 4 years back in 2010 to 2014, and she was my everything. I always had a suspicion of her being part of a system, but my knowledge on the subject was Really limited. As I said, I still have no idea if she's aware of her having DID to this day, or is it something she pushed away from herself. We were in a close relationship, and she did tell me about another person in her mind, in fact, I've met that other person quite a few time. They were a prosecutor, and they gave us quite some scary times - whiches were, in fact, especially after watching your videos, somewhat understandable, if I may say so, but it doesn't make them less scarier. I never knew their gender, as my girlfriend referred to them as "ő" (our native language doesn't have any gender pronouns. We use "ő" for all genders, because we don't have anything similar to "she/he/they".) But now I'm sure there were many other people in their system, and I met a lot of them, but I never knew.
    Watching your switches made me realize a lot of things I never knew about. I never knew how many times I've seen switches in person. Now I know the reason why she was dissociating a lot, why she fainted in my arms during triggering times. Of course, I knew about her traumas, because we trusted eachother. But I was unable to do much about them. We were teenagers at the time. And I blame myself for this to this day, ever since I met her. Watching your videos helped me understand a lot of things from the past I had no idea about. I wish I knew better back then... There were times I could've handled much better. I could've been a better girlfriend. I could've given her much more safety. I should've researched more. I should've done more. And this guilt is something I don't know how to handle. Yesterday I told her how much she means to me to this day, since we did not break up on bad terms, she's still one of my most treasured friends. And I told her I'm sorry there were a lot of times in our lives that I could've handled better. She told me not to worry about them, and that she loves me as her closest friends to this day as well.
    She's at a good place in her life now. But I still don't think she ever came to the realization that she has DID. I'm sure I'm not the person to bring it up all of a sudden, and I'm not planning on doing so. I just want the best for her, but at the same time I can't help but keep wondering about all of this.
    Thank you for reading this comment.
    And thank you DissociaDID system for being so brave and creating this channel to help people understand DID more.

Even before my diagnosis, I found the film Inside Out really useful and characterised my different struggles and visualising having a conversation with that character really helped me to process different things. I was talking to someone about this and they lost it at me, saying things like, "oh so you're just pretending to have that dissociative whatever it was called disorder then" and "you're clearly insane". I do have what I internally refer to as autopilot mode which is what I go into when I dissociate from myself if trauma related incident are brought up but I just tend to be found blankly repeating the same action or following my routine without any thought.
