    So... zoom H5 user here. Does the Tascam make separate mono tracks when you choose mono but have two mics in the XLRs? I can't find this anywhere, not even in the manual.
    I need it to record one file for each microphone, and preferably in dual mode. So that's four files simultaneously. Is that possible? The Zoom H5n records 3 mono files simultaneously, but doesn't have the safety dual mode. That's why I need to know. Thanks!

    Are settings saved when you turn the unit off? How about when you remove the batteries, or does it revert back to factory default settings? Also, I'm not interested in making separate recording and what I want to do is to pass through the audio directly to my camera. Will this DR60 handle that okay? Thank you.

    Hi Richard, if you have time to do another video could you please show how to record one mic into ch1 and a lav into ch 3 (so a interview setup with a backup)

      I think, but nt 100% sure yet, that channels 3 and 4 do not have microphone pre-amps so 3 and 4 need to be line or instrument inputs.

    • @tropicalscuba
      @tropicalscuba  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ch3 is part of a stereo pair of 3/4. That input is for stereo mics and line input. You can however use an XLR to minijack into the port, but You might as well use one mic in input 1 and the other in input 2

    Nice video! I am struggling with the 3-4 input. I have plugged in my headphone out from my audio interface as I need to record all sounds coming out of my pc. But the problem is, it is recording in mono and I cant get it to record in stereo. I went trough out the manual and all the setting but can not get it record in stereo. In channel 1 is condenser mic which is being recorded fine. Please help, how do I set my dr60 to record 4 channels in stereo?

    • @tropicalscuba
      @tropicalscuba  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Pavel. Sorry to hear you're having issues. Can you check that you have the correct cable to start. Make sure it's a TRS minijack to TRS minijack, it has two black rings on the connector separating the 3 sections of the minijack. Next on the Tascam set your REC MODE to 4CH, setting channel 1 and 2 not to stereo as you have a condenser mic plugged in. If all of that is good and done, then next thing is to check you monitor mixer on the DR-60D. On the back of the DR-60D press the MIXER button, top right. Make sure that channels 3 is panned to the left and channel 4 is panned to the right. If you have been monitoring from the without panning your tracks, then it would have come out mono, yet the recording itself IS stereo, so it should have been fine. Let me know if that helps?

    Great tutorial! Questions: for inputs three and four, what type of connector/wire is needed to record two separate mono tracks? Is this even possible? I noticed that inputs three and four share a gain control. What I’m essentially trying to do is record 4 wireless microphones. Is this even possible? Is this system a good option for that? Thanks.

    • @computerjantje
      @computerjantje 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think channels 3 and 4 are two seperate channels with one controle. This means the input levels have to be the same as one can only gain them toghether. Also I think 3 and 4 are line inputs. So without a microphone pre-amp and therefor not suited for microphpne levels.

      computerjantje thanks. It’s coming together in my head how this is going to work. I’ll need an 1/8” splitter to xlr female to connect to the Sennheiser wireless.

      @tropicalscuba  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, Sorry for the delay... Input 3/4 is a stereo input, used for stereo microphones or a stereo line input. You can provide power to a mic that needs it using the Plug In Power setting in the DR-60. Essentially a stereo microphone is two capsules that share a common ground within a unit. So you could possibly get it to work using a splitter cable, but I don't know if it would work, you might get a ground issue. I'll have a dig around and see if I have any cables to do a test for you.
      Another tip is to use a portable LIPO mobile phone charger pack and plug that into the USB port on the DR-60 for power. You'll get 3 times more life out of it rather than taking a backpack of AA's to keep it running. These things chew through batteries like there's no tomorrow

    • @tropicalscuba
      @tropicalscuba  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      OK, just done the test... Using what I had to hand I made the following cables... Radio Mic's XLR output, plugged into an XLR to 1/4", plugged into a 1\4" to Mini Jack adapter. Times that by two, one for each radio mic. I then plugged them into a Headphone splitter and then into input 3/4 on the DR-60. Essentially this MASS of cables was emulating an minijack to twin XLR cable. I had a clear signal from both radio mics, but they were mono in the headphones, I was expecting one to be panned left, the other right. So there must be a ground / pin1 mix somewhere from the XLR's. This also meant that I wouldn't be able control the level of the mics in post from the two sources if they were speaking at the same time. The only individual control of the mics was on the receiver pack, controlling the AF out of the RX.
      So, you can use 3/4 for two mics, but it's not an ideal situation by far. If you have access to a Zoom H6 recorder, that's the best budget way to control 4 individual inputs at mic level.

      Richard Butler you’re an incredible human being for doing that. Thank you! I believe we had the H6 picked out originally, then I came across this unit and thought it was a bit nicer. We ordered it from B&H last night, but I think I will now have to swap it back for the H6.

      The DR60D only accepts a maximum of 32GB card, perhaps thats the problem? Another tip is to format your card on the computer first using "SD CARD FORMATTER" from sdcard.org (google it)

      No idea I'm afraid. The batteries don't last very long on them anyway. I'm pretty sure you'd be fine with a 32gb

      I have to agree with you. I made this video ages ago. I think there's better products on the market nowadays. The -12dB backup recording on the DR-60 is a great option though. I think it's a good partner to a DSLR
