    This is by far the BEST instructional video of the TASCAM DR60DmkII on TH-cam.

    You saved my day. I had just bought this recorder and I had 1 hour to learn and apply it at an event with my condenser mic using phantom power.
    I nailed it better than the other photographers with mics on top of their camera because the room/hall was full of echo and my takes were clean due to closer proximity.
    Thank!!

    Hi there, I recently purchased (March 2023) this unit and I am just learning how to use it. Your video tutorial is the most comprehensive tutorial I have come across. I realize that this tutorial is 6 years old and that also indicates how long ago this unit was manufactured. Having said that I am hoping that you or someone will provide some help. I am trying to use the XLR inputs (1 or 2) and adapt a 3.5mm jack to use a Rode Video Mic Go II Mic. While I realize that there is a dedicated 3.5mm input I wanted to test the XLR inputs and adapt wireliess microphones that uses 3.5mm to I can have multi-mics. However, I seem to have trouble when using adaptors. There is simply no sound passing through while the 3/4 channel works well with a 3.5mm jack Mic (Rode as noted above). Hoping someone will see this message and provide some insight. Thank you.

    If your XLR gets stuck, it is because the xlr's on this recorder are crappy. The locking mechanism of the xlr's damages easy. Here is an example of a quick fix to get the stuck xlr out. th-cam.com/video/WsE3P49HxHg/w-d-xo.html Please watch this before you decide to open the recorder to get the xlr out. By the way, I love this recorder. I use it most-times so I can have 4 separate channels of audio or sometimes even 6 channels when I use my original video-camera channels separate from the Tascam. Usually I record 4 channels and put an out put from the tascam back into the mic input of my camera. For redundancy and for easy synchronization afterwards. Here my tascam on the video rig: th-cam.com/video/Q199zLxkKXs/w-d-xo.html

    Regarding "it won't turn on" troubleshooting. Strangest thing about this unit is that you have to hold the power button far, far longer than feels normal for this thing to power up. Makes a guy think for sure it's a brick on arrival, but nope... just keep holding. Quite strange.

  • @lawrencearmour5310

    This recorder seems to be the DR60 not the DR60 MkII. The MkII has a High+ setting for the input level but what's described here is only up to High. The time available to record is only up to what the 2GB card would do. Larger cards arenot compatible with the DR60. The MkII needs a firmware update to make larger capacity cards readable, and a firmware update for the DR60 is not available on the Tascam website so you'd be stuck with a maximum of 2GB (not insignificant!).

    Wow....This is superb presentation, simply stupendous.
    I have some questions I m sure u'll help me.
    1. It says 4 track recorder i.e 2 XLR connecters, one 3.5 mm lav mic what about 4th? it's written as 3/4
    2. Do we have hiss when kept on power adapter, without running it on batteries?
    3. Can I use two lav mics with 3.5mm jack's?
    thanks a lot.

    • @darkmew64
      @darkmew64 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nikhil Dipankar The 3.5mm is in itself a stereo input (TRS), although you can’t really change the gain for each individual channel (left/right)

    I have 3 Rode Camera Microphones which have the normal 3.5mm jack for plugging into the camera. Instead of this can I use all of them at the same time just into this recorder, by connecting one into the channel 3/4 3,5mm input, and the other two in the XLR inputs via a 3.5mm to XLR adaptor ?

    I am wondering if there is anything wrong with my recorder. The only thing the record button will do is start the recording. There is no continued blinking of the record button. I cannot put it in ready mode or pause the recording. My only option to stop the recording is pressing the stop button.

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU

      Yes, the Tascam takes a 3.5mm input for its 3&4 channel so you can record out of your stereo directly into the 60D.

  • @MisterWealth
    @MisterWealth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why is it that my audio levels are so low when I don't have gain on? I got the 1/L and 2/R maximum and gain level low but you can't hear very well at all, but if I plug my mic into a USB it's crystal clear audio if recorded directly into audacity.

    • @chrisratchford8153
      @chrisratchford8153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      For normal recording situations, it seems that the gain must be set to Mid, at least. The Low gain setting is very low. Perhaps this Low setting is only intended for very loud recording environments.

  • @MisterWealth
    @MisterWealth 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Can anyone explain why when in recording the audio levels are almost non existent? They're so low but I have the dials maxed out. The gain is set to low, because someone the noise sound will be too much if I up the gain. Is this true? How can I make audio louder? I've tried 4 different mics they're all too low when recording through this.

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as your Sony camera has a mic input, you should be able to connect the Tascam directly to your camera. You can use the 3.5mm audio out from the Tascam to send your audio into the mic input of your camera. You just need to have the right cable.

    Great Video; Thanks! I am so confused between purchasing this unit or the DR-70. I believe it might be worthy to say that this unit looks simpler to operate and better screen information although the DR-70 is smaller. I'm seriously thinking of going with this one. Any recommendations?

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The DR70 has 4 full size XLR combo jacks, that and HDMI Timecode trigger might be more beneficial to certain users. A recommendation would really depend on what you would be using the recorder for...are you recording music, film, podcasts, sfx, etc?

  • @cmkarallis

    As a first field mixer would you recommend the DR60 MkII or the Sound Devices MixPre3 MK II

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      MixPre3 MKII if you have the budget for it. Overall much higher quality preamps, 32bit float and timecode (among other features) make it a much better choice.

    and how does it work with the dslr camera? is it for sync? if so does the quality of sound on your video wont be affected?

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      you would plug a cable from the mixer to your mic input in your dslr. this allows you to have a pre mixed, "mixed down" signal sent to your camera. Im not sure what you are referring to by sync, but it allows you to have those audio tracks recorded to your video files as a stereo mix. while this may be ideal if you are doing quick editing, it is a mixdown of all four channels and not individual mono tracks, so you cant seperate the streams in post. If you are using only two mics, this could be great.

  • @dr_fite

    Hey Orlando, thanks for the nice video. One question: Is it possible to set each channel to a different level when recording in Dual Mono mode? I always do that to have a low level back up on one channel (in case the narrator suddenly speaks too loud). Can you tell me something about that?

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're in the correct mode, Dual Mono or Dual ST (if you're using two mics). You just need to set the "Dual Level" DB to be lower, for example -6dB. That means your source will be recorded at the level you set on the knobs. Then your safety track is recorded @ -6dB. Hope that helps!

    I have this recorder. Today i use it as a cool portable music media player.
    I use a Zoom F8 for filming projects that need live sound, but its so good it actually works brilliantly as an 'audiophile' 8 track digital recorder. The Tascam's mic prramps are a little noisy BUT its a very capable little recorder.
    btw, those side shots are so uncool.

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      does your camera auto detect the mixer when you plug it in? it should say something along the lines of "microphone detected". if it isnt, try using a different cable. If that doesnt work, perhaps try a different mic, directly into the camera. if that doesnt work, it means there is a problem with your camera and not the mixer.

    I’m looking to get this. Right now I’m using a zoom h4n pro and NTG2 and I find out a lot of people say it’s a bad combo. My tracks record at around 70-85 on the record volume to get the levels at about -12db and not to clip but when I take them to Final cut I have to boost them a lot to get a usable track they sound really good and clear but the volume unedited is really low. I was hoping this new recorder would boost them up more before putting them in to my video editor. Would this be a step up from the zoom H4N pro with noticeable improvements and ease of use? Thank you.

    Great review! I got a new one of these and haven't been able to get levels or recording through a jack on the side. It works fine with XLR input but not jack, anyone any ideas that you can help me with guys? Txs

      Make sure you've enabled the 3/4 CH mode so it's actually using those 3/4 channels to record. Then you'll need to make sure you're sending a signal to it and adjust the 3/4 knobs.

    The AA battery with 1.5V is important or 1.2V is enough?

      It works with both Alkaline 1.5V or NiMH 1.2V, you have to set it in the menu.

      You'll need to enable plugin power in the OTHERS -> SYSTEM menu.
      1. Press the MENU button to open the MENU screen.
      2. Turn the DATA dial to select OTHERS
      3. Turn the DATA dial to select SYSTEM
      4. Turn the DATA dial to select PLUGIN POWER
      5. Turn the DATA dial to turn plug-in power ON(default value: OFF).
      6. When finished making the setting, press the stop HOME button to return to the Home Screen.

    Hey CMI, I have a question for you. On the original 60d, we have to press the record button twice to start the recording. Is there a way where we can press it once and it would start recording OR do you have to press it twice to record? (Which would suck by the way but it's something I've been questioning for years now since we first have it.)

      Hello! Great question. Im not super familiar with the older model, but if it is similar to the mark II, then you have to technically press record twice. Once to put it into "record pause mode". this effectively arms the device for recording. pushing it a 2nd time will actually start recording the clip. if you skip to 11:00 on the video, there is an example of this. to my immediate knowledge I dont know of a way to begin recording the track without arming it first. I personally like this workflow, as it prevents you from accidentally hitting record whenever youre just moving around. That way you dont dont end up with a long false take.

    Would this be overkill if I want to start out with one mic? I just got a AT4050 and want the best audio I can at this time. Later I plan on buying a DSLR to plug a external mic to or to use this Tascam with. In my home studio I want to do voice overs but other than that I want to be able to record video outside of my studio for vlogging and youtube but I don't want to buy another separate microphone and a zoom H5 or dr-44wl. I'm trying to keep my budget low for right now. I'm still trying to save up for a Zhiyum crane v2 and lights, etc. I was thinking of buying a Scarlett solo 2i2 or 2i4 but that wouldn't be mobile. So this Tascam looks like a possible solution.

      I think the DR-60D would be great for your needs. while it may seem like overkill at first for only recording one mic on one channel, you have the flexibility of using more mics later on. Plus at the price point, it is relatively cheap when compared to comparable devices, such as a zoom. The screws on the top of the unit make it super handy for doing DSLR videography. just know that while it is a 4 channel mixer, only two of the channels have full sized xlr inputs. channels 3+4 are a Stereo 3.5mm input.

      CMI Equipment Thanks for the quick reply, that means a lot. Bigger channels would simply ignore questions. Would I need a fairly heavy tripod with friction arm to hold boom mic, tascam dr-60dmkii, phone, and possible light?. I'm debating whether or not I should just buy some "cheap" studiopro soft boxes or just a single cheap led light panel to put on tripod. If I upgrade to a dslr I also may need to buy a bigger monitor which would also go on tripod, since it's just a one person team here. So lots for me to try to think about which I've been doing for months. I'm tired of researching and just want to buy and get started. I'd like to start my TH-cam channel with possibly the peavey pvat14 and then maybe buy a cheap midi piano/ drum pads combo. Nothing special you know, just something to get me going without being flagged for copyright BS. All this sounds too much for one tripod. I also thought about using some sort of teleprompter but I think that would be too much. I don't have much space so two or three light stands, a mic stand, and another tripod for the camera and this tascam seems like a lot of floor real estate that I don't have. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance.
      This is off topic, but you should check out the Nikon d850 looks pretty badass. 46 megapixels

    Mine turns off as soon as I choose BusPowered. I am using USB

    • @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU
      @CreativeMediaInstituteNMSU  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      We'd need a bit more information, you're powering it off the USB port? What are you plugging into? Is it a battery? Computer?
      This is from the manual: Connect the unit to a PC using the attached USB cable as shown in the illustration.
      The USB SELECT screen appears to choose between USB bus power for power supply or connection with a PC through the USB cable when USB cable is connected after the unit is turned on or when the unit is turned on after connecting the USB cable. Turn the DATA dial to select BUS POWERand press the DATA dial to select power supply from the USB port. The Home Screen will appear.
      Depending on the USB bus power specifications of the computer, this unit might not function when connected to the computer by USB cable. In this case, use a TASCAM PS-P515U AC adaptor (sold separately) or batteries.
      • This unit does not support computer power conservation and sleep functions. When powering the unit using the USB bus power of a computer, always turn such functions off.
