  • Turns out the strange knocking noise was indeed the power steering pump pulley.

I can not thank you enough. I had exact the same issue and Pepboys told me that I had to change the engine. I did not believed them, because I knew it was power steering related and was planning to change the power steering pump myself. I found your video and spent 15 minutes to tighten the PS pulley. No more sounds, no issues. Thanks again.

I can't believe this. I had the same noise. I started watching this and almost turned it off this thinking you have no idea what you are doing. No way that pulley is loose. I checked mine and it was a bit loose! Tightened it and no more noise. I was on my way in the morning for a pump but now I'll just go buy breakfast! Thanks for this post!

I had a new serpentine belt installed and shortly after, I've noticed the same sound. Thought my power steering was going out and ended up buying all the parts to do it myself. I was looking for installation videos to get an idea of how to do it, and came across yours. I'm almost certain that they didn't tighten it properly now thanks to you. I also went to a shop and they diagnosed it as the pump. They wanted around $1000 to fix it. Also charged me $60 for the diagnosis. Yeah I'm going to try to tighten it tomorrow myself and see how it goes. Won't be hitting up that mech shop again lol

Michael Adams does ROCK! OMG I don't know what inspired you to 'just' tighten the nut on the power steering pump but you are brilliant. I too thought it was a con rod knock but hoping for the easy fix I pulled the valve cover to look around- nothing. I changed the timing chain tensioner- nothing. I got inspired by removing the belt completely and found no noise at all, so I figured the water pump was the culprit- nope and now I have a new water pump. and a tight power steering pulley AND NO KNOCKING NOISE. The car runs like new. Thank you so much!

You are awesome! Our 1998 Corolla had the same noise and someone told me it was a thrown rod, but I thought not because it stopped when the steering wheel was turned. I searched and found your video and it worked! Yay! We had to do it one more time a couple of months later, but it's so easy I don't mind. In fact, we can reach the thing from above so we don't even need to jack up the car, just open the hood and it's right down there. Thank you so much for your video!!!

Wow, you nailed it! I've got a 2000 Corolla with the same problem. It just started the other day. I thought it was a valve tap at first, but no. It makes a whining and clicking sound. My usual mechanics thought it was the power steering pump and were talking about hundreds of dollars. When the steering wheel is straight it makes that noise. If I turn the steering a little to the left or right it stops. One bolt and it's fixed. Also, never mind the plastic inner wheel cover. I had a woman hit me in the parking lot a couple years ago. It fell off and I never replaced, never missed it either. The door handles, I've replaces them several times. Why is your check engine light on??? My check engine light is on a lot. I was told it was my upper O2 sensor. That's what the computer reading said.

I have a 1999 Corolla LE and this noise started about a month ago. I thought it was the exhaust rattling. But when I would turn the steering wheel from side to side the noise would go away. So I knew it was the steering pump. And like yours , it would at times not make any rattling sounds. Now I know how to fix it. Great video , Thanks

@@zackamanda9799 thanks for that. I just did the same from the top down though. It stopped the noise for my Corolla as of tonight. Time will tell if it fixed it permanently. Has yours acted up after you tightened it with the rod though the pulley wheel?

Add me to the list of satisfied customers. Thank you. I think it's wise to note that once you hear the noise, you've got a limited amount of time to get that 17mm (if Japanese Corolla) pulley bolt retightened. If you don't jump on it quickly, then irreparable damage to the pump's splines on the shaft quickly follows.

I was having the same problem, I found holding the crankshaft pulley nut with a 19mm wrench while tightening the ps nut helped the engine from spinning. After tightening the ps bolt, the noise continued for about 1 minute and then it disappeared. The noise occurred when the engine was on idling, turning the steering wheel didn't make it louder or quieter.

If anybody has this problem with their Toyota it's a flange nut and it's worn out I tried tightening mine but it wouldn't it would be loose within a few minutes of driving the first time it lasted a day the deal is is that it's a flange nut it gets worn and you have to get a thin lock washer I put that on and I've been screwing with this for a couple of weeks now tighten it up and I have no problem so if it doesn't work by just tightening it it means your flange nut isn't working properly I hope this helps
