  • 194LL Bulbs Were Used To Replace Burnt Out Ones.
    Replacing the burnt out dashboard light bulbs on a Toyota Corolla is something you can do yourself in a fairly short amount of time. This can save you a costly repair bill and won't cost you more than the price of a few bulbs. This video walks you through all that is necessary to get the job done quickly and easily! The procedure outlined here is applicable to model years 1990-2002, with very little difference in the required steps.

    Stan, I have seen THOUSANDS of these types of videos, but the way you did it is GREAT. Sometimes the recorder will assume that the person watching understands everything, but you have done a FINE job of explaining what needed explaining, and NOT explaining the trivialities of the job. You explain things the way I do. I appreciate that. Thanks.

      And Thank You, John! I appreciate the feedback. I know I need things explained a certain way to me to get the point across, and I hope I'm doing the same. Thanks for watching!

      @@HowSkills great video, I appreciate it! I did just like you said on my 2001 Camry Solara, but when all done it didn't work. The only thing I didn't do that you did was detach the cables first, could that have caused the dashboard to no longer light up? Btw, the other lights work PRDNL, ABS, check engine etc. I appreciate any feedback you can give.

    I'm pretty critical of many youtube videos as they are often absolutely terrible, incorrect info, first timers who don't know squat trying to teach others, horrible photography, the list goes on and on but you seem to have nailed it. I can't find one word of criticism and anyone who has any mechanical aptitude whatsoever should be able to do this. It was truly a pleasure to watch and very easy to understand. You should give lessons to most others on youtube!!!! I'm doing my corolla tomorrow. Thank you.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for watching! And from what I've looked at since this video, I don't think it's actually illegal in very many, if any, states. Just read some cautions about safety, and what law enforcement might think if they pulled you over for something, and they walked up to a car with a totally dark interior. I know it felt weird at night to not know my actual speed, or if I was getting too low on gas, so I had to get it taken care of as soon as possible. Hope the video helped!

    Attempting to do this tomorrow since mine are also blown out in my 97 Corrolla. Two things: 1) What if your car doesn''t have a steering column adjustment option? Will it be a problem popping out the center console? 2) Do we need to disconnect the battery first? I've heard if you don't it could possibly set off the airbag while you're working on it.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You should still be able to maneuver the center console piece out - it's just easier with the column adjusted down and out of the way. To be on the safe side, I would go ahead and disconnect the battery. I honestly didn't, but now that you mention it, I think it's a good precaution!

    • @SpideySensei72
      @SpideySensei72 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You were right. Even with a steering wheel in the way I was able to get everything removed, replaced and re-assembled. It's just a really tight fit and you'll need several different sized screwdrivers...at least I did.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure that all models of the Corolla had an adjustable steering column, but if yours does, there should be a lever on one side of it that you can flip that allows it to be moved up and down. If you can’t move it, you can still get the job done, but it’s a little more awkward to get to some of the screws.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The lever is most likely on the under side of the steering column.

    Great video. You made it easy. One question though. Do the bulbs need those thin plastic covers? Mine were kind of dry rotted and didn't come off in one piece. It's a '99, so I guess it's not so shocking that after 20 years they might not be in great shape.

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they don’t need them, they just add color to the light they give off. You can buy new covers if you want them, but without them, your dash lights will just give off white light. Some of mine were brittle too!

    Awesome, going to have to do this for my fuel gauge. Any clue what happens if you leave the color covers off? Does that make the light white?

    • @HowSkills
      @HowSkills  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it will make the lights shine white, so really no harm done. You just won't have the original colors showing up on the dash. The covers can get brittle over time, so they could even rip when you try to take them off the old bulbs, or put them on the new lights. So, you might not even have a choice about it. Thanks for watching!

  • @theoldman947

    Actually you can pivot the gauge assembly without disconnecting the cables, the harness is long enough. Then you are looking it at the back upside down. Remove the bulb with the boot on, then roll the boot off. If you pull on it it may tear. The boot is not necessary. It will give the gauges an orangy-yellow color without the boot.
