  • In this video I go over what are some causes of a noisy (whining), sticking or hard power steering wheel and how you can go about fixing it yourself. I cover the symptoms and signs for a bad power steering pump, power steering rack and pinion, power steering pressure line and how you can go about diagnosing and fixing them.

I've been having a power steering leak for over a year now and just have put off replacing power steering pump because I wasn't sure if it was something else that could be damaged on the vehicle. This help me diagnose exactly what was wrong and I am going to be replacing the power steering pump tomorrow thanks so much. I also do appreciate the Whiteboard drawing it kind of taught me more about power steering than I originally knew

Just finished watching this video. My toyota sequoia fluid reservoir is full and doesn’t appear to leak. As I have not needed to add any fluid. Yet it still squeals. And is hard to turn at low speeds. I will be trying the turning to get air out and then the rack and pinion test. And I will be back. Great video. Simple and easy to understand. Love the white board explanation for us non-pros.

This happened to my Infiniti m45. I left the car to sit in the cold weather for almost a week while using my very reliable Honda. I would start the car daily but never drove it. When i did decide to drive it, a loud noise was heard from the power steering pump/reservoir. The steering wheel was hard. I shut the car off and noticed the power steering fluid was oozing from the top of the reservoir. The tire pressure had gone really low so I went to add air to my tires. Steering was slightly hard so I added some synthetic power steering fluid. $2 for the fix minus the fluid which I already carried in my car.

Hi team! I have a problem with my steering column making a noise after it's forced to turn right multiple times. During regular use and turning left, it's fine. After I leave a high rise parking lot where I have to turn right multiple times to exit, the steering column makes one hell of a noise. Is it a seal that's busted? My fluid level is fine and I can't see any leaks below. Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi. I have a 2008 Mercedes’ r350z. I replaced the rack and pinion with a remanufactured maval unit. It was done by a Mercedes’ specialist who replaced the resovoir and fluid as well.
While it doesn’t leak anymore I find that every now and then it gets sticky while parking. Like I need to give it some gas. During this time I can hear the pump making the noise in this video.
Do you think the pump could be bad?
While the old tack has a small leak, it worked really smoothly and never heard the pump.
    Thanks!

    Hello Ratchets and Wrenches,
You just made a new subscriber. Just a couple days ago my car started making this noise you described in the video. The noise started really slow but later escalated. While I was getting back home from the store like two days ago; I saw some smoke coming out from the hood. So I parked the car and the next day when I tried starting the car the noise disappeared but the steering became stiff/ strong.
What would you recommend in this instance?
    Thanks

My Ford Falcon 2000au was making noise like a growling when I drove. I noticed that my power steering rack was leaking and I decided to put a new one including the tie rod end. After everything was done, I did all the procedure to take the air out of the system. The fluid was perfect, there was no air bubbles and the steering wheel was running perfectly. As soon as I put the wheels on the ground and turned the steering wheel from side to side I noticed that the noise is still there. not as bad as before. I need to know what can be or what I need to do.

I laughed at first when you went full teacher mode with the board, complete with pointer, but that was actually super helpful. Thanks!
So quick Q: a repair place wants to replace my rack and pinion because I have a leak. I've recently started getting that whining/growling noise, but the car still turns fine. The wheel still tries to go back to its normal position after turning, just like you showed in the video. I'm thinking it might be the pump instead.
Problem: the car is almost 15 years old and has over 200K miles. Is it worth the fix, or should I just keep putting fluid in it (since it's a small leak) until I'm ready to ditch the car here in the next few months or so?
