    The 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage picks up where the Colt hatchback left off, and although it offers decent equipment and low running costs, it is undercut by value rivals like the Dacia Sandero and Skoda Citigo. In the UK, the three and five-door hatchback is available with a pair of super-frugal three-cylinder engines offering outstanding fuel economy. An aerodynamic design and equipment including stop-start and regenerative braking help every model deliver less than 99g/km, but both feel underpowered and more ill-suited to longer motorway journeys. There hill-start assist, anti-lock brakes and electronic stability control as standard, but the noisy cabin, uncomfortable ride and questionable quality mean it lags behind its European rivals in almost every area.

    This is my first car, just bought it 2 weeks ago lol manual transmission GLS. I am Asian, I live in Southeast Asia and I like it, love it, but yeah it is noisy when driving highway, or express ways, but it doesn't matter. As long as it gets me from point a to point b. And no regrets still. Nice practice car for a small girl like me lmao

      Doesnt judge the cars ? What ? She does nothing else, moans about the interior, handling, ride quality and performance. Very biased channel towards more premium cars. She would be out of a job as a car saleswoman if all she did was tell customers her own negative opinions.

    Just ordered the current model after I tested the pre-facelift. The only problems I experienced while testing was noise from the tires and the clutch and gear shift will take some getting used to since it's not very precise. The 1-liter was quick enough to get along with the traffic outside of the city. So yeah I'm pretty sure I'll be loving driving my car when it arrives in about 4 weeks. With a better set of tires I think rolling noises will be kept to a minimum.

    The only people who buy such cars aren't interested in speed, comfort, design, or showing off. They only want a reliable and affordable car that will get them from A to B every day. They are the sort of people who see cars only as a tool that moves you about. And they want to spend as little as possible on their car. I understand that much, but being a petrolhead myself, I can't help it, but hate the Mirage. Because for the price of one, I could get a far more interesting second hand car. Mercedes 560SEC, E320? BMW E24 635CSI... Tons of sleek, hot rides that will never be uncool. But again that's me being silly and unpractical. Still, I'd rather be silly and unpractical with heated seats and TV, both features I never use in my 2005 Mercedes and pay 300 bucks for a transmission oil change, than drive in a new bland, boring, faceless, soulless plastic box. Mitsubishi could have at least tried to make it look more interesting and desirable...

  • @ronaldderooij1774
    @ronaldderooij1774 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    According to other reviews it earned 4 stars in the EuroNCAP crash test, not the full 5, so I don't know if that last piece of information was correct. Furthermore I drove one on the highway up to 150 km/h (90 mph??) and it felt stable to me, without chimey noises or engine noise. However it has a lot of noise coming from the wheels.

    • @Eshlar
      @Eshlar 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's 4. You can confirm this in the official Euro NCAP website (where it's called Mitsubishi Space Star).

    • @ronaldderooij1774
      @ronaldderooij1774 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      After some research I come to the conclusion that Mitsubishi has dealt with many issues mentioned here in the 2015 model. All Mirages (Space Star) have the antenna moved to the back (so no chimney noises anymore). All Mirages have now stiffer suspension, so that the tilting in corners is removed. Upmarket models have more noise insulation in the wheel arches. What remains is the same interior and the lack of feedback of the steering.

    The real mpg scores of this car in the 1.0L option says that people average 64mpg! that's pretty amazing! (even the 1.2L got 61mpg on the real mpg score) :O
    The aygo has close official figures to the mirage but the real mpg score is about 55mpg!
    The best I've got upto now in the aygo is 63mpg to a tank (which was mostly urban driving). my last tank got 60mpg and I have to drive in a pretty unrealistic way to use every drop of energy with little to no braking (if safe of course!) and turning my engine off at lights which last longer then 10 seconds. When I first bought it I got 46mpg on one fillup and 48mpg after that, it wasn't until I bought an OBD II adaptor to measure my consumption that I actually managed to get past 50mpg (I now have a rule - If you can't get 50mpg or more on a trip, walk or cycle.).
    Torque made me realise just how much your fuel economy has allot to do with how you slow down and stop and I learned that you should slow down allot earlier because there's no point in burning extra fuel just to get to a traffic light a few seconds earlier just to sit and wait. Also, faster A roads don't always give you the best economy and exceeding 60mph burns more fuel
    If you want a car that's one of the most economical and it's a petrol it looks like the mirage in number 1 in cheap affordable economy before you get to hybrids and diesels (Which now have DPFs, which cause problems if you do allot of short journeys or slow city driving).

  • @fanfare100
    @fanfare100 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I figured our what that funny wind-chime noise was on my Mirage! It's the antenna on the roof. If you have it angled too vertically and drive faster than 80 km/hr it vibrates from the wind and it does sound like a wind chime.
    Solution: The antenna is on a pivot, so simply angle it more horizontally and the wind-chime sound is gone when traveling at high speeds! And you will still be able to get proper radio reception as well.
    For future models, they should probably use a rubber ducky antenna and not have to worry about customers not figuring this out, like that test driver. ;-)
    I just LOVE the gas mileage I've been getting. It's up in the hybrid territory, but for a much much lower price than you would pay for a hybrid; plus, you don't have to worry about your batteries degrading after five years! :-)

    • @lklpalka

      Thanks for the wind chime info. I liked this little car, drove both transmissions and each was effective in its own way. Had enough power for me and the ride was a little cushy but I happen to like that. The cvt is noisy if floored, but it's not THAT bad, and it goes away. Cruising, it was quieter than I was led to believe. But it's the mpgs where this is truly best in class, and is the whole point of this vehicle, really.

    • @fanfare100
      @fanfare100 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your'e very welcome. I can't agree more. When cruising at usual speeds, it's actually quieter than any of the other cars I have owned in its class. It's also got the best stock stereo of them all.
      Occasionally I can hear an endearing rumble of the engine (which some snobs seem to complain about). What I see here is a double standard. If they were to hear the rumble in the engine if a mini-Cooper, oh, then it's a sporty rumble, but since its on a Mirage, well then...
      It's not often that I have to floor it anyway. And one thing that I've noticed is now that I've had it for 4 months it seems to have gained more strength, perhaps because the engine has adapted. I only get the advertised mpg when I'm late to go somewhere and I drive it in disregard to mileage. Otherwise I consistently get over 50 mpg. What colour is yours? Mine is that semi-metallic brick red. And I just outfitted it with the side-skirts, spoilers, window-guards, and put chrome everywhere except for the front headlights which already look chromey. I'm a traveling business developer and I bring my booth with me to trade shows along with my luggage and everything fits! Everybody else seems to show in an SUV and when I show up heads turn and jaws drop in disbelief of all that stuff I unpack from my little Mirage with the rear seats folded down. It's pretty incredible.
      I get reimbursed 50¢ per mile for my travel in addition to my salary, which is wonderful! Car so far more than pays for itself! Couldn't ask for more. :-)

    • @lklpalka
      @lklpalka 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the mileage account, sounds honest. The review sites I visited all seem to be horsepower-biased and quite unfair I think. The one KBB guy is a spoiled American in my opinion, what a silly fusspot, and very unfair.
      I haven't bought mine yet, only lengthy test drives but am going to purchase the CVT by month's end. The 1K rebate here in the States is even more attractive, plus at the end of a promotion month they will be very willing to deal. The one they have that I like is equipped with the keyless entry and extras package is black... Wasn't wild about it but it's growing on me. I drive a 2010 Toyota Highlander which, although big, doesn't carry as much stuff as one would think. Mileage is about as predicted and is a great vehicle but I think I can fit weekend luggage and three cat carriers in the Mirage. Also have a 2013 Hyundai Sonata that doesn't even approach the expected mpgs. There is a class-action developing there I think, so although I considered the Rio, I just don't trust Hyundai (KIA) that way. So when I get it we'll see which of the others we keep.

    • @fanfare100
      @fanfare100 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was also contemplating that KIA but was swayed by the mileage, which, as opposed to other vehicles, turned out to be very conservative in its estimates. You will definitely fit three cat carriers plus luggage un the Mirage. Right this moment I'm lugging two suitcases and a display booth! -and _still_ getting great gas mileage.
      There is a saying. Cars don't transport people and things, they transport themselves. That is especially true with most cars, the vast majority in fact. But the Mirage happily transport me and my belongings. :-D
      -whilst listening to some great tunes in high fidelity. I too got the keyless entry version, which came equipped with a very good Bluetooth. Now when I jump into another car I'm looking for that non-existent button to start it. xD
      It has more than grown on me. I live it. In a short while, after I eat my breakfast, I will drive almost 200 miles with it. :-D

    • @lklpalka
      @lklpalka 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad you're happy with it and the capacity advice is good to know. And I also thought the sound system was more than fine, was wondering about the Bluetooth, thanks. Sometimes they don't cancel road noise well. I must say the Hyundai excels there.
      I'll let you know how I make out, please keep me posted too, I appreciate hearing from you!

    This is a rational car. Car journalists are not rational about cars. I do concur with one point of criticism though. After 2000 miles in the Mirage (Space Star) I think she is right on the vagueness of the steering. It is precise, but it gives zero feedback. I cannot feel if I am driving straight on, for example. That is the only criticism I share. Oh yes, the plastic is another one. Who cares? I also have criticism that was not in the review. I find the car ugly. Who cares? I don't see that from the inside anyway. I find the seats a bit too hard, too little headroom in the rear (sideways) and the ecotyres make the rear suspension not fond of fast bumps. All things that I knew when I bought it and I do not find very important. One last useful point: I drove a cheap CVT model (you can buy them in the Netherlands, contrary to what was said here in the test) and there tyre noise was very loud. I bought almost the most expensive version (we have 5 trims) and the tyre noise is gone. So upmarket versions have far better wheel arches noise isolation. But.... as stated below, the car somehow grows on you. I like it even better now than at the first day I owned it.

    • @fundiver198
      @fundiver198 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ronald de Rooij The Mirage is made in Thailand and was constructed mainly for developing markets. No offence to you, since you bought one already, but I think it is a bit difficult to justify this car in Europe.
      For the same kind of you money you can buy cars with significantly more refinement and better handling like the Bratislava trilings (Up, Citigo, Mee) or the Hyundai i10 / Kia Picanto. If I was was to buy a car in this segment, I would definitly pick any of those over the Mirage.

    • @ronaldderooij1774
      @ronaldderooij1774 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      fundiver198 I can see that. But the reason I chose for the Mirage is that I wanted a cheap, very economical, reliable car WITH CVT. Well, after reviewing the market the choice was very simple within my budget, only one. The Mirage. I do not say that everybody should buy one. I do not reget buying it at all. It does all the things that I want from a car. But that is my satisfaction, not yours nor anybody else's.

    • @fundiver198
      @fundiver198 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ronald de Rooij Makes sence. The lineup of automatics is not exactly strong in this segment with either those awful automated manuals, which are cheap but incredibly jerky to drive, or traditional 4 speed slush boxes, which are smooth but drink a lot of fuel.
      Anyway I also think the criticism of this car not so much by Rebecca but by many other western motoring journalists is a bit overblown.
      Yes their might be a bit of wind noise, and the handling might not be brilliant. But hey its not a Rolls Royce. Its a car, which has deliberately been engineered down to keep costs low. Which they are. And made as light as possible to save fuel. Which it is and does. And yet they have not skimped on the really important stuff like crash safety.
      So whats the real problem? Not everybody can afford to drive Audis, or want to spend the extra money on a more refined car. And to me there is something appealing about a car, which is completely honest about being just basic transport and nothing more.
      Unlike you I also think its looks ok. It might not be the best looking car in the segment, but it is surely not the worst looking either. I find the looks of the Skoda Citygo and Seat Mii to be a lot more bland for instance.

    Complaining about the automatic not being available on the lower end models: who buys a small car with an automatic anyway? I mean really, i don't know anyone in Europe at least who drives a small car with an automatic.

    • @ronaldderooij1774
      @ronaldderooij1774 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Now you do. I just bought this car with CVT. I have driven many cars, manual and automatic over the years and I find manual transmission a very 19th century techology, i.e. a primitive way to transmit the power of the engine onto the road. But sometimes I just had to compromise and buy a manual. This will be my first CVT, though.

    • @ronaldderooij1774
      @ronaldderooij1774 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** CVT has evolved, no elastic bands, lots of electronics, you know...

    • @johnbenton4488
      @johnbenton4488 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do. Although I am forced to by my disability, I'd rather have an automatic gearbox than a manual anyway. For two reasons; 1. They're dead easy to drive, and 2. they're far more reliable. But the issue is irrelevant. I had a Colt (Auto) which fell to bits in less than 10,000 miles, and was a quiet as a jackhammer in a dustbin. It was economical on fuel though (over 73 mpg on a run) but really not worth considering. I'll not have another Mitsubishi. I now have a Hyundai. Altogether a better vehicle.

      Ronald de Rooij CVT is fine if done properly (as in Rover cars) but this twin-clutch nonsense is just that: nonsense. These 'semi-automatics' are neither fish nor fowl. They are plain awful devices, with so many parts to replace it's scary just to go outside the visibility of a garage.

  • @marshknute

    No wonder Mitsubishi is having financial troubles. They wait 90 years before introducing the new model. I'll just wait until 2193 for the next generation.

  • @djkenny1202
    @djkenny1202 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    You can buy the electric car by Mitsubishi for about 12-15 grand depending on incentives in your area here in the States. That would be my pick. Only way I would consider the Mirage is if it was heavily discounted down to about 9k. Fuel efficiency is great, but the Electric does not even need fuel. Electric is pennies in comparison.

    Negative review as per usual. Does nothing but moan about it. Some reviewers totally miss the point. Its for the customer to decide if they like a car, not the reviewer with their own negative comments because they dont like it.
