(ENG) Mitsubishi Space Star (Mirage) - Test Drive and Review

  • Mitsubishi Space Star (also known as Mirage) is no longer a compact minivan, but a successor to the popular supermini Colt. The Japanese want to compete in the budget segment. The sub-compact car is well put together, but it is also very simple. Is this enough to give it a strong position on the competitive European Market?

    I have this car for 3 years now. I must say that I am very satisfied with it. Very easy to drive. Can weave in traffic easily and it can handle long drives too. I drove this car to our province with 8hours driving and I didn't have any issues with it. Very economical and light to drive. However the acceleration is sadly slow but still gets the job done. 😍

    It is really amazing the totally opposite reviews by the so called motor journalist and owner of this car. The first hate it thoroughly the latter love it.By the way I belong to the 2nd group,and before I moved to a third world country yes I was also driving premium brands in Germany like Audi, BMW and even Porsche, and yes again, I dont miss much in this cute practical car.

    I appreciate the honesty, but I disagree with the content. No so much the facts. They are OK, although I can for a fact say that the Mirage is a good value for money even in higher trims. What puzzles me is that he says it is comfy over bumps and does not understeer. That is correct. Still it is driving like a 20 year old car? What more do you want? I have another criticism that you did not mention. The steering is without feedback. That kills the pleasure. But if you see through that, it can outrun Audi's and BMW in corners (because of being lightweight). And oh, my average mileage over 40.000 km is 4.5 l/100km. Insane. Your expectation of doing 7 or 8 l/100km is rubbish. I once threw overboard all my economy intentions and went on vacation in Germany fully laden to the Eifel mountains. Driving in a sporty way. After the vacation? Average 5.5 l/100 km. How do you get it to use so much fuel? The sales in the EU of the Mirage are relatively good. So there is a place for this car.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mentioned fuel economy for the city. Warsaw is one of the worst cities in Europe, when it comes to traffic. But to make things worse, people tend to drive aggressively, which is not good for fuel economy. I know in the Netherlands (your name looks Dutch, so I suppose this is where you're from) drivers respect the speed limit, and if you drive the car around 50 km/h I'm sure it will be efficient. In Warsaw it is normal to drive 70-80 through the city (unless you're stuck in traffic), and going 50 means you can't change lanes safely, because you'll just cut in front of someone driving much faster.
      That said things have improved since 2014, when I recorded this review. Today I'd probably get about 6L/100km in the city, again, because of heavy traffic.

    Agreed Marek, but I can get a CVT Space Star with "everything" as standard for app. EUR 17.000 in DK, and if I would have a almost similar equipped Up!/Citigo/Mii, I would have to pay app. EUR 22.000, and it´ll still be a smaller car and engine, lots of revs on freeway and a really crappy ASG-gearbox...., to this you´ll ad 3 more years of warranty on the Mitsu for free.
    Therefore, you can´t buy bread and butter for image, so I´ll have to settle with a Space Star and smile every time a drive by the bank :-)
    I´m quite aware that handling etc is well below par, but with everyday commuting in mind, I can live with that.

    • @MarekDrives

      Totally different pricing strategies. I just configured top spec up! for Poland, and only if I add sat nav, it becomes maybe 250 euro more expensive than Space Star.

    • @nintendoatarikiller

      Marek Drives The Mirage is currently the cheapest car on sale in the US. In Canada, we have the Nissan Micra as well. It too is the cheapest car on sale ($9998), but it's much more refined. Although the Mirage comes with a $2500 cash discount and their 10 year warranty.

    Thanks for the review Marek, I was going to ask how this compares to the Hyundai I10 but you seemed to have summed it up well.
    I am currently looking at buying a new car and with the above car I am also interested in the Hyundai I10 and I20.
    The only thing that draws me to this car is that in top trim it's automatic, great furl economy and zero (uk) road tax
    have you driven the I20 and what do you think is the overall best out of all three ?
    thanks again for a great review

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      I haven't driven the new i20 yet. The less said about the old one, the better ;)
      I understand the tax implications, but IMO i10 is a more practical car, than the Mirage. Bigger boot, more space, better looks. What sort of warranty do Hyundai and Mitsubishi offer in the UK? That's also something you may want to consider.

    • @BillyNoMates1974
      @BillyNoMates1974 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In the UK the mirage does not come with cruise control or bluetooth (not even an option)
      As for warranty
      Mirage - 3 years 60,000 mile warranty
      I10 - 5 years unlimited mileage warranty
      I20 - same as above
      Kia Rio - 7 years 100,000 mile waranty
      The only problem is that the Rio has become expensive here in the UK and the I10 is virtually non existent for sale second hand (maybe they are that good people dont sell them)
      thanks for the reply

    • @ronaldderooij1774
      @ronaldderooij1774 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      BillyNoMates1974 In the Netherlands bluetooth and cruise control are standard on the Intense and more expensive Morage models. So, maybe you could try again or try to buy one in the Netherlands with right hand drive and the import it to the UK? No idea if that is possible. You would have a unique Mirage as it will not be a Mirage, but will have "Space Star" on the bootlit.
