    Don’t forget you can use the feedback compression on the mbp, use the limiter to add color then add silk. You can also unlink the channels to let the compressor breathe.

    That mascot sort of looks like Barry... LOL!!! Good video sir. I LOVE that you mentioned the truth about the big-wigs mixing ITB because they have incredibly well recorded tracks to begin with. Their tracks sound so good because they are using good mics, good mic pre's and analog saturation, EQ etc. Another cool tool in deciding if a piece of hardware (or a plug in) is doing a good job is to dial it in the way you want. Volume match it, then listen for awhile. After you are accustomed to it, bypass it. If you start asking what went wrong, then it is a cool piece. If you barely noticed it was gone.... well then.... LOL!!

    Thanks for the great videos Barry. Just a quick question. What do you use for your master bus preamps? I’ve been considering the warm audio 273 for that purpose. Thanks, Greg

    • @carltontriplett4947
      @carltontriplett4947 ปีที่แล้ว

      You wouldn't use a preamp on a matter bus. The preamp is essentially what you would use to amplify your instrument or voice through a mic so that it would have loud signal going into your DAW/recorder. These master bus processors he's using here in this video are meant to polish the tonal and dynamic balance of the song after it's already been recorded and mixed. Only for example here, he decided not to do a full mix (balancing the tracks then a tonal and dynamic shaping of the individual tracks) just so the listener can hear what these processors can do to a mix without the distraction of other processing (EQ, compression, effects, etc) on the individual tracks or stems.
      I hope all of that makes sense! 🙏🏿

      I agree. That thing makes everything sound better. Sometimes it's by the compression or limiter, sometimes it's by the silk coloring (e.g., blue/red), sometimes by the stereo field editor, sometimes by changes in mid-side processing, and sometimes it's by any number of combinations of any or all of the above. Takes a good mix (or track or bus) and makes it sound professional. I refuse to live without it.

    Nice review. I have the Bettermaker Limiter and its probably the only unit that is comparable to the Neve MBP. So to me it would have been more useful to see a sonic comparison/shootout of the BM vs the MBP (instead of being used in combination), as they both have M/S processing, VCA limiting, and frequency adjustable saturation. I still want to get an MBP in the mastering chain to put it through the paces and see if it can beat out the BM. Thanks!

    Thank you Barry for this video and your explanations at the end, because I think the masses of bedroom producers FORGET that very important detail is that those songs on the radio or ones winning awards were ALL recorded on high end analog gear FIRST, processed by additional gear and the console and THEN sent to the Schepps, Endors and CLAs of the world to be mixed in the box. They all came out of the box only to return later to be sent back and forth. They did not achieve that sound and mix using a Rode NT and a focusrite 2i2 and ANY of them, I don't care who is it is that tells you otherwise is freaking lying to you and are most likely paid shills for the plugin manufacturers, because you are NOT going to get that sound with plugin method. Hybrid is awesome and plugins have their place and you can certainly do a lot with them as I am a fabfilter fanboy, but I also have analog gear.
    I tested the Lindell version of the Neve 1073 by BWX and it was no where close to my BAE 1073. Not even in the same universe of fatness, roundness, rich and creamy harmonics. Luckily I got the plugin on a fire sale so when I uninstalled it there was no real money lost. I have an SSL mic pre and I noticed the same thing. I would say use the plugins on material that is not prominent or matters least, but for steak and potatoes, hardware is the way to go, but your mileage may vary.

    Can you elaborate on the difference between a Mastering compressor and a Bus compressor?

  • @SinkaneTV
    @SinkaneTV ปีที่แล้ว

    Barry. I just pre ordered the new Stam FX-G384 clone. I am also getting a Dangerous 2 Bus +. I’ve considered adding a Drawmer 1976 to my master bus chain. Do you think that that might be overkill though? I want a stereo imager working with the Stam but wonder if that might be a little too much.

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’m not sure the Drawmer is best for master buss, they are a great company that makes great products.
      If you have the Stam Buss Compressor coming, I suggest a pair of Pultec clones like the ones from AudioScape.

    • @SinkaneTV
      @SinkaneTV ปีที่แล้ว

      So an EQ over a saturator/imager? Real estate is also a factor and I know the Drawmer (I keep going back to them!) have a 1 U Pultec style EQ…

    • @SinkaneTV
      @SinkaneTV ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s also stereo

    • @BarryJohns
      @BarryJohns  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@SinkaneTV I know, I think it’s great, but it may be doing some similar things to the Stam. I’d wait until the Stan arrived, get used to it, order the Drawmer try it out: if it’s what you are looking for keep it, if not return it. Here is what I can tell you is a pretty common master buss chain, buss compressor/Pultec eq’s. They are made for each other.

    Would using (2) Rupert Neve’s “SHELFORD CHANNEL’s” do the same as the Portico 2 Buss? ( I own two for STEREO at times ... never thought of this? Thx for any input ( or if only one would work doing Lft. then Rt. Channel seperate )?

    • @pb25193

      No it won't. Also - the MBP can't do everything that the shelford can.
      You won't get width or depth controls on the shelfords iirc. Shelford is designed for incoming signal (tracking) and MBP is for outflow (final mix / master)
