I really didn’t expect that much of a difference but this took the cake. Looks like it expanded the stereo field and made the bass much more punchier. Kudos to Rupert neve.
wow that mono switch was insane
Not cheap but it sounds like a million bucks. Very well laid out presentation Colt, thorough yet direct to the point.
We need more signature capis!!!!!!!
Absolutely. A full channel strip version would be a cool next step or maybe a tracking package with with sets from 4 to 16 would be great.
Are you going to make more?
Wow that sounds fantastic and I really dig the stereo widener. Super clean, colored sound. I might have to consider picking one of these up after I upgrade my monitors. Thanks for showcasing this piece of equipment Colt, that was awesome!
Love this box! This has to be the best thing they've produced so far. That widener is crazy good! I want this!!
Definitely a great mixbus tool. Would be a great addition to any hybrid setup!
Same as Ryan, I usually get the results I want in the box. This is the first time in decades the desire to access a piece of hardware takes me over. The natural order of the units alone is so cleverly conceived :-)
the best results can come easily with hardware, ITB is always thriving, there are few pieces now that can do the job, but in analog is very easy to get the warm sound.
Ok... this thing is really, really good. Might have to purchase here soon. Thanks for the amazing review!!
bro i'm soooo buying this! also, great to see how a pro makes the sound change in real time
Beautiful!
Amazing, just like being there myself - thanks again Colt - U rulez! :D
Colt, you said it, and it is the reason I am getting the MBT delivered tomorrow, my mix bus was getting way crowded and I realized the results were not anywhere close to what I wanted.
Solid review, Colt. Trying to get one of these out on a live show with me soon.
Good walk through!!
I have always patched one output on my 5059 satellite summing mixer into the last 2 channels and routed those into the other output to get the red and blue silk combination. This box will be fantastic after the 5059 summing mixer, opening up the 2 channels 🤘🤘🤘
Wow. An amazingly magic piece of gear. Only if I could afford this.
Silk indeed. Really made the track feel finished. Thx Colt
wow, that super silk is amazing
Low pass filter over mid range eq would be cool too, Great work on the video, been great watching your content over the past few years!
Crazy. Insanely good
Love this! ❤️
this thing seem to work very well!! lml epic video!
I literally just bought one of these because of this video! Congrats on your signature Mic Pre (I'm pissed you sold out though)
Pumped for you to give it a go!
Fusion has Mid/Side and HF COMP. You can also add a pair of 542s to the Mid/Side and have your silk independently. They said the Comp is Opto? One thing I don’t like about the Fusion is the Vintage drive but all and all I think for a colour box this could’ve been 3 grand easy.
When the honeymoon fizzles out you’ll realise the only thing really worth it there is the Super Silk section. 🤷♂️
A Master Bus Parametric EQ (MBPE) would be more exciting!
I totally agree MBPEQ would have been a great complement for my MBP.
@@bonafontcielget two used 5033 and you will be in heaven.
@@onethousandtwonortheast8848I literally just bought two last month and exactly what I needed!
So true! I agree!
Fusion is not in the same league. The EQ is not useable for mastering, tranny is meh, built in China. Used market is flooded with them, too, so...
This is a boutique piece. Built by hand with top notch high end components. That costs $.
Oh boy. 🔥
These are going to be very popular, what a unit.
Just got this neve unit and an SSL g comp gotta play with those after work tonight cant wait!!!
added to must-buy list
The added zener is a cool feature to me. I have the RND MBC and this has a lot of overlap with this plus I use a Dangerous 2 Bus+ and Bax Eq plus an Overstayer MAS for my analog bus processing so I don’t think I’ll be adding this but the demo’s I’ve heard sound great. Using this on the drum bus is an exciting prospect but then I’d likely want 5-6 of them and that’s way over my budget.
Obviously it’ll get compared to the SSL Fusion which has some different features for less but let’s be real, $1000 doesn’t really mean that much to us if we like the sound of something better, not saying this is better, I’ve never played with the Fusion but I don’t think will do much more than slow people down a bit.
would love to try this out live
Wow thats the real deal right there...Im getting that....!!!
Very cool!
Now I am trying to decide if I still need to get two newtons or get this and a dual 1073 pre without eq. This thing checks many boxes for me cause I can track, mix, master buss process and stem buss process and not to mention the super silk functionality, the creative juice this thing offers is incredible… I already have SSLxrack stereo eq, stereo compressor and the SSL buss compressor hardware modules. Wow! 😛I will be saving for one of these . After I get a dual BAE 1073 preamp, then a Tegeler pultec eq unit then the MBT
Man, I would also track with this beauty!
Would love to see you do.a review on the Portico II as well.
Man what a difference. RND are making some really cool stuff lately. Wish I could afford it 😅
Oh and it has a zener diode drive that’s crazy.
They are really listen to you !!! 😊 Now it's time to ask for super silk independent 500 ..😍😍
This is amazing. Food for thought: For the same price, one could do
Elysia Nvelope/SSL G bus/SPL BIG/ RND 542’s and probably have a pseudo better result with more options in each “section” which is what i do, but this looks equally amazing.
without the 500 series chassis/power supply the cost of that combo is well over the cost of this MBT.. it's probably the more versatile package, but this is a one-stop shop for a lot of people wanting an analog passthrough for their ITB mixes
@@shanzyan that’s a great point. In my mind, when i purchased, neve was including the R10 with purchase of a set of 542’s. That deal may be over. I would very happy with the mbt.
Do you mean SSL g bus comp?
@@hazeentertainmenthiphop of course
@@AlexandNeville I havent had any issues in stereo, myself. Interesting.
Holycrap its epic af. Im sold
MBT jumped forward in the mix when engaged. I gotta stop watching your videos before I go bankrupt 😅
I guess RND is aiming at the SSL Fusion market with this box? But at 2x the price, not sure it`ll make the same splash.
As an owner of their MBP, there are several modules here which are a bit redundant: the Comp, Width, and Silk. I would have preferred a 4 band EQ with parametric low mids and high mids, as well as lo and hi pass filters in the same price range. That would have been a better combo with the MBP in my opinion.
RND made an absolute killer EQ that hardly anyone bought so they stopped making it. The 5-band 5033. I have two. The inly thing that sucks about it is no detents. For the price, you laser point EQ ability, if you want, without a lack of musicality. Years ago it was discovered that 90 percent the magic sound of Neve’s designs was in the type of iron core in the transformers. Some guy took an original St. Ives or Carnhill transformer from an original Neve 1064 or 1073 and counted the windings, etc. the point is, its the core of the transformers that matters most. RND knows the secret recipe.
What you're describing is very similar to the Portico II Channel
Yes, I remember. I think something along those lines but a 2 rack stereo unit, 4 band EQ, hi & lo pass filters indents on every knob, same color scheme as the MBP. (What I do like about the MBT is the ability to combine the blue & red silk modes).@@onethousandtwonortheast8848
@@christopherventer6391 I have several portico II channels. Great pieces!!!
@@onethousandtwonortheast8848 Same! I use a pair of them. The features are super handy for a lot of uses. I especially like it for vocals because of the de-esser, smooth sound, and on-board parallel compression. They're also quite good on synths or guitars.
I do wish you could be a little more precise with the EQ (+/-15 is kind of a wide range for me, personally) and that the pots for those were not center detented, but it's a small criticism. Great units.
The width control is probably just a very basic mid side processor that only affects the side channel. The hpf obviously filters out some of its lows while the width knob just adjusts its volume. This is why there's no change when collapsed to mono, since the mono sum is practically the mid channel, which remains unaffected.
When collapsing to mono we’re not omitting the side materials, we are “folding in” or combining the sides. Hence the intrigue that the frequency balance remains when collapsed to mono. It’s not quite as basic as you suggest, selective frequency phase modulations between LS and RS play apart which is why the switch to mono is transparent.
yesss
Cooooool video, thanks a lot. Now in 2023 we can work with much better P.A. than 25 years ago, like L-Acoustic, d&B, Meyer sound labs and other ones we are more able to analyse and configure our P.A. .I don't understand why we still use graphic eq to try to have the best sound. My dream as F.O.H. local soundman would be to use a parametric eq like the spl peq to eq the system depending of the place we have to play plus 2 Rupert Neve MBT on output of my desk, but as I'm a dreamer I don't know if I will hear that one day before the age of 85 or even 90 (actualy 63y.o )MANY THANKS TO THE FIRST ONE WHO TRY THAT AND SEND ME WHAT IS FOR HIM THE RESULT.
SEND YOU MY BEST FROM SWITZERLAND MOUNTAINS.
🌲☃️🇨🇭😚
this unit sounds so good that feels like cheating.
just INSANE.
I agree ! Sounds sooo great event on a youtube vidéo ! So imagine in a studio :o
But Please 4K $ !?! There is 2K$ just for the RUPERT NEVE DESIGN logo/brand :p ^_^
@@Tpoint19 yes, you’re paying a little extra for the name but the transformers, indents, and the overall build quality adds to the price. I think $2,999 would have made this incredibly attractive.
It is 2000 for material ,production, hands, but 2000 is whole life listening, comparing, investigating, so you make name on sound that is proven and never been put in question. I would like it to have for less, but as I mention. I would agree that 3000 would be on point in mine view,but...@@Tpoint19
Wow I just purchased the masterbus processor Portico II and now they came out with this.
Use both
the mbp is much better than this. I just got mine too. its phenomenal
Dude the MBP is no slouch at all in any department.
The thing about that though is that if I didn’t have my MBP and I had an MBT instead, I would desperately want the MBP. I’m not as desperate to have the MBT yet it does sound frickin incredible.
@@mattmullin33609 I think the Curve Bender does alot of what the MBT does but with all the extra EQ control. Yeah, more money but have you seen the curve bender demos? That thing is instant perfection at any setting. Its insane. So a CB with your MBP and you’ve got instant HSOAP. (Hot sex on a platter.).
Hopefully next they release more of a mixbus friendly 542 but I already have a million transformer circuits all over the place so idk how they will navigate the silk
It would be interesting to compare this with the SSL Fusion! (seems they released it for the same purpose) Nice video btw, 20 minutes flew by! :)
Especially since it costs almost double.
@@AndrewCCM oh, I didn't even learn that until now. Seems like it's decided for me then! :)
Was just coming here to comment this!
I've got the fusion and am about to use the mbt for the first time tonight after work, I'll chime in with some comparisons later
so ive got the fusion and the mbt and the mbt is completely next level. it is one of the most impressive units ive ever heard and will elevate your mix in a way you didnt know was possible. the fusion is meh...end of story, sorta kidding but yeah the mbt is far superior in tone and features
I think the downside is the compressor threshold knob. It should have values *below* 0dB, not just values above it. Both demo vids I've seen keep it at 0dB for everything
Colt i suspect tweaking with input and output in not the same as having a real mix control, cause if the signal from input to output is processed in serie and not in parallel you have: in > eq > comp > width > silk > out. , and if you change input you alter how react the following modules in the chain. The mix control instead acts in parallel between the processed and untouched signal, i think for that price a REAL mix knob control should have been there. Totaly agree with you about a missing "mid band" eq ...think what would have been to have that to enhance a vocal track applying both silk modes! m2c. great demo 👍😎
Im a very in the box mixer and have been mixing for years. This is the first piece of hardware that has peaked my interest. The SSL bus + is cool but never made so much of a difference that i wanted to drop that much money on it. This Neve MBT is massive!
ummm this is a different beast and double the price than the excellent BUS+... don't know if the new MBT is on par quality-wise though?
@@PereRevert that was kinda my point. Bus + is solid. Same with the fusion. Its 3/4 of the price of the MBT and only does eq and comp. Having a width control and 2 saturators built in to the same unit is a win!
This with the bus + would be a crazy combo
Price is high!!
Love RN!
Hi Colt _ re visiting your 5 month older Vid on MBT and I'm compairing the real Analog to "KIIVES AUDIO"version on the this + the ""SSL Fusion" for the Big difference in Price! :) Thx you Again, George
I thought what is this guy doing making it louder when you put it through Neve and than you said it's 0,5 db quieter when ON. Jesus, this is insane. :) 👍👍 And the width plus silk section is more than superb. I'm thinking is this better to use before mastering on a mix bus or in the last stage after in-box mastering for final color -glue touch, or maybe both a little. On a mix bus a little coloring compressor, width, maybe some silk and than after final mastering (first stage) you push all to hell and back with silk, eq and compression all the way until you jaw drops, haha. It's a great unit. I was just watching Neve MBC for that, but this is way better. Subscribed!
Awesome video !!!
That really makes me wanna buy that unit instantly… 😱
I really like watching all your content as it has a great quality visually, sonically and all the info are gold !
By the way, can you tell me what rack screws you use ? I see they are pretty tall and not that large, and seems to finger tightened !
Thanks !
Cheers from France !
Colt always has the best music and sound. Other guys have these big consoles and fancy expensive equipment with an average sound output. "It's not what you own, it's how you use it"...probably raw talent in the end.😊
Really appreciate that!
Now I'm debating on selling the RND MPB and replace it with this. hmmmm Decisions. Decisions. Would reallyyy love to have a Mid EQ band.
Colt, I think your next step is to demo a Lavry Savitr AD. The biggest smile on my face when we got that.
this is a dream box for me, but for now I must live vicariously through you
Really great actually i knew about it because of the plugin version NFuse | Bus Processor)
Portico 2 is sick !
Question for Colt if you're listening:
How would you use it chronologically in a mix?
Would you leave it in bypass mode until your mix is where you want it and then engage it to do some sweetening or would you use it differently?
Thanks.
Seems like a pretty cool unit…
What a gorgeous product. I couldnt justify 7k for tye level i work at but if i was a pro, thiswpuld be amazing
would have loved for you to adjust the output after processing it, we all know that louder is cooler by now.. unit looks promising tho
Totally want an all in 1 unit. I don't have the budget for multiple.
Look like my next 2 bus investment 😂🔥🔥
holy moly...thats craazy. but that mix itself is insane lol that low end is some crazy shit. maybe a mix rundown with a deeper dive into that lowend ? :D
Thanks so much! Maybe we will do that at some point
Sounds like the width control isn't doing anything with frequency, it's likely just a simple mid/side sample delay using the HPF setting as the crossover.
Yeah sounds like it
It is the crossover
What I'm hearing is just a simple hpf and volume on the side channel (the width knob controlling the volume). That's why there's no change when collapsed to mono.
Would be interesting to hear this next to an SSL fusion to compare....
No comparison from what im hearing in this demo. I have the fusion and will be selling it for this.
@ Colt: at 13:48 when you bypass the MBT after you quickly dial the drum-bus: like, WOW! That thing does stuff. Great demo! Thanks for showing us why we need to spend another $3.5-4K on a siq analog 2ch box. Srsly tho, I *want* that. ...'a few minutes later'..... I had to edit this message to incude: Even over the YT Creator Uplode>publish algorithm/codec/UX/whatevercomputerzstuff - your demo of this box really shows the circuit design magic of this unit! Please shoot out this unit vs. the SSL Bus+ !!!
Nice review, glad to see this is not something I need, lol. Wallet saved. Seems to have a lot of the same effect as an SPL Vitalizer. I've already got my favorite pieces that are equivalent to each section but I can see how for someone who is mostly ITB but wants to dip their toes into hardware this would be pretty handy. Lack of MS processing seems a missed opportunity, as well as no attack adjustment on the color comp. Other than that seems to sound pretty good as you'd expect from a Neve box. All in one boxes are rarely truly that but this looks to come as close as any of them.
Damn! Noice!
🔥🔥🔥🔥
For the width control section. Think of Mid/Side control... Kinda
Yeah pretty much. I wished for something different.
wow
Great video! Wondering how the Width on the MBT compares to SPL Big
God I almost don't care, lol, I love my SPL Big!
To me, they are both equal in the widening department. I will say that the combination of high Pass filter, blue silk, with the low band EQ is significantly more flexible, and better sounding than the low bump switch on the SPL. That said you could buy five or six of the SPL for one of these
@@ColtCapperrune Yeah I have the Portico II at the big studio and of course it's amazing. I have the SPL at home which is where i do most of my production work anyway. I usually just leave it around 9 o,clock Range, 12 o'clock on the Stage, and about 2-3 (9 o'clock) on the big knob on a mix with bass boost. seems to be the sweet spot for a mix buss
Great Video. I wonder which stereo image you will choose in a song, this one or Spl Big. Are they comparable. ?
For me, they are equal in the widening department. However, the high Pass, low, EQ, and blue silk together are so much more powerful than the Lowe switch on the SPL. Of course, you could buy five or six of the SPL for one of these lol. The SPL will stay in my rig and get saved for individual stems, while this will likely be on my mix bus for nearly everything I do. As for right now anyway.
I need one...ENOUGH SAID😎..Great video CC
Looks like you're the talk of the town on Gearslutz on the thread talking about the MBT.
All good. I’ve been lurking on that website for well over 15 years, and I’ve only found it useful once or twice. Nothing but haters over there lol.
@@ColtCapperrune yep, and that's the gist of how you're being talked about. Too bad so many pros were chased away over the years. 20 years ago you could get some good insight from many of the a-list engineers that actually made the great albums of the day.
impressive sound... reminds me of a scaled down and more commercially viable version of the neve designed Legendary Audio: Masterpiece 2.
sheeeeeesh
I am a huge fan of the Neve sound, this unit seem very desireable. There is only one thing I don't understand, they should not change anything. I even colour my bass tracks blue image that. But is is the colour choice of the silk circuit. If you know anything about light you know low freq is red, infra red and uv is violet/blue so that's why I don't understand the blue silk is for bass,, it makes no sense to me.. But man i wished I could play with this gear :P
i just need width and silk...these functions are crazy....
Hi/Lo ratio of comp should've been a knob, individual level knobs for both red & blue silk would be better, too.
Sounds like Def Leppard When engaged
Neve does it again. I’ve been thinking about taking my dual 542s and tun one red and one blue and see what happens
I ran a vocal through two 542s and did that. It sounded amazing. I engaged the tape part only on the first one.
I GOT TH NEVE NEWTON CHANNEL STRIP. ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT. IS THE MBT GOOD FOR MASTERING A SONG ??
Sounds Great Colt! I was thinking the same when "SHELFORD CHANNEL" came out ~5 years ago, that why not let us choose to use both together if need to be? Hard to beleiive thats -.5dB lower on the PK :) George
I hear the Difference in the VID but you say you use you Signiture Pre's Infront of the CHAIN on Mis BUS > SERPENT> NEVE's MBT? Let me know is this right & why we use the 500 Series at the beginning of Chain & why? No Fabfilter L2 (2) on this MIX? So where is the Limiting coming from or because this is just the Pre_ Master ! Thx you, George ( Trying to learn ) :) BTW... How is you 'LIVE ROOM"/ "CONTROL ROOM" coming along w/ the Build ?
Hey Brother ❤❤❤ 😊😊😊Wow You are Great on these stuff bro I like that so cool bro 🎉🎉🎉
The transformers add to the RMS levels. That’s helping it. Peak don’t mean shite. Transformers are everything to making a tracking mix sound finished levels imo.
Hey Colt, how good is the stereo width section compared to the SPL BIG 500? And which do you prefer?
Bro when’s this song coming out 😭🙌🏻 it’s so good
Probably in a month or two! Thanks!
@@ColtCapperrune can’t wait!!! Keep us posted once it drops 🔥🔥🔥🔥
other level then the fusion,i sold mine :)neve is the best
I literally just bought the master bus compressor and I’m taking it back. Really not impressed by it. It did not beat out my 500 series SSLG bus compressor. The SSL was better sounding, and wider, it did not have the separation that the Neve had because of the transformers, but it had better glue and better vibe. I’m going to buy the master bus transformer for sure.
Yeah, I got the SSL g comp and it's the most magical bus compression I've ever heard, it's THAT sound I've heard my whole life, I just got the mbt from neve and I'll probably just use the silk and some other features
$4,000 to master music that will be heard on $40 earbuds.
I'm cool with that. 😂
For me, this was even more of a 'Wow-effect' than SSL Fusion was when I first heard it. Man...Can you ever get a bad sound out of that thing...?! I guess it has a price tag to match...
On another note, I'd like to be in a bar that's playing that song! :D
Colt just a heads up, when level matching, peak level is pretty irrelevant. You're better off doing it by ear, but in a pinch, short term LUFS is a closer indicator. The level difference between the processed and bypassed is pretty drastic, and certainly not close enough to make a fair comparison (although this box does in fact sound gorgeous). I'm willing to bet that yeah, the bypassed may have a higher peak level, but that's only because the processed signal is getting clipped like crazy. Despite the lower peak level, that processed signal is noticeably louder.
Would you use this to track acoustic guitar? What sections would you use overall?
