Heba Kadry and the MBP + MBT

  • Ever since the Master Bus Transformer was announced, we’ve heard the same questions a number of times: “What’s the deal with the Color Comp?” “Don’t you already make a bus compressor?” “Does this replace the MBP?”
Mastering Engineer Heba Kadry (Björk, Sufjan Stevens, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Big Thief) has owned the Master Buss Processor for about eight years. Hear her thoughts on using compression for color - not just dynamic range control - and why her new MBT is "the guy that brings the vibe to the party."

Big fan of your work. Amazing mastering chain and desk (made by?). I'm actually very interested to get your take on the Gyraf G24 compressor. Seems like a really different and flexible unit.

@@notesfromjmota5127Nah, you could pay someone else 1/4 her rate and get pretty much the same result. What you pay extra for is her convincing you that she's making your vocals "holographic." Creative people are suckers for that kind of woo woo.

Thanks for letting me know about your experience with hardware processors! It's great that we're both passionate about audio engineering, even if we approach it slightly differently.
I totally understand the appeal of working with dedicated hardware units for things like EQ, compression, reverb, etc. The tactile controls and analog warmth they can provide are hard to beat. At the same time, I've found VST plugins to be an incredibly versatile and cost-effective solution for my needs.
The ability to run multiple instances of high-quality digital processors on my DAW without cluttering up my studio space is a huge plus. And with new plugins constantly being developed, I have access to an ever-expanding array of unique effects and processors.
That said, I'm definitely not opposed to incorporating hardware into my setup down the line. A few choice analog pieces could nicely complement my VST-based workflow. I may even take you up on your expertise to recommend some worthwhile hardware investments.
In the meantime, I'm stoked to hear about the hardware you're using and the results you're getting. Don't hesitate to hit me up if you ever want to discuss VST plugins or just nerd out about all things audio! Collaboration and sharing knowledge is what it's all about.
    Cheers!
    Alex

Im a Reason user and I find that the better the sound selection and EQ of each element and the right mix and stereo panning can get a similar sound to hardware and get so nere to it that its actually almost impossible to tell the difference. I think gear has the ability to enhance a sounds dynamic range and as a result make it sound good when being processed. I follow successful people who say gear makes all the difference but I say anyone who dont understand the fundamentals on EQ there mix and master will sound trash regardless. Finally I have gone back to old productions from a time where My skill was lacking and the mixes are muddy and poor EQ VS My latest which sound way better. If I had gear now it would be assumed that My music is better because of that when in reality its got nothing to do with it, I just know more now.

MBP for left-brain precision control over dynamics, MBT for right-brain creative control over harmonic content. Either (or both) work great for any genre.
