Genuinely, I really enjoyed the sheer confusion I experienced with this fight, at first. It helped immensely when I actually discovered how to navigate Mettaton but this whole section really felt good. In some ways, Mettaton really does feel like the final boss of the game!!

Notice that the CORE is the only place where encountering an enemy doesn't trigger battle music, that solidifies that feeling of momentum and determination.
That's actually because of a coding error of some sort. Normally, a different battle theme was supposed to play in the Core, but due to an oversight, both the battle theme and the Core theme overlapped, so he just made the music stay in encounters.

@@mariotheundying pretty sure it's included in the files, it's just never played in the game. It's called mus_star.ogg

@@AspieOld Technically correct. The track mus_star.ogg was supposed to play originally during one of Magiks attacks, however it created problems with the core music playing during the battle.

Toby really thinks of just about any silly thing a player might do and makes it a feature. Like all of the possibilities of things you can say to Mettaton during the fight. But even more importantly, how to deactivate the forcefield to get to Mettaton at the end. It's always great to see people struggle with the fighting section and the puzzle section, especially when I know they're completely optional. Toby wrote that sign knowing people wouldn't understand what it means even after playing through the game.
"(I cannot fight.) (I cannot think.) (But, with patience, I will make my way through.)"
This is essentially an option for the person who doesn't want to fight or do the puzzle, to just stand next to the forcefield for a minute and then it'll just turn off.
There are other moments in the game as well, like for the papyrus snow puzzle, if you interact with all of the trees instead of matching the O's, you can find a secret button that just solves the puzzle for you.

Well to be fair, Papyrus will tell you the button in the tree is there if you talk to him enough "for the solution."
There’s actually a lot of things in the essay question he will react to, its always hilarious trying things out.
One of the things I really like about Undertale is how it builds up Asgore over the course of the whole game. By the time you actually meet him, there's a certain apprehension; you don't know what to expect. You've heard so much about him, but a lot of it seems to be conflicting. Is he a big softie who will offer you a cup of tea, or is he a brutal titan who's going to stomp your face in the mud? And of course, that build up would mean nothing if the payoff wasn't worth it. I'm really looking forward to the next episode.

I like how originally they don't actually reveal that the evil guy and the friendly guy are the same person. The evil guy that Toriel warns you about is always referred to as "Asgore" whereas the friendly "fuzzy pushover" is always referred to as "Mr Dreemurr'. It is only just before Undyne's fight that she uses the full name "Asgore Dreemurr" revealing the truth and creating the conflict that continues until the actual fight.
@@Smitology Doesn't Papyrus say mention the name Asgore? I remember it's set up in such a way that you think he's about to warn you of how strong he is, but then he's like "yeah he's a big softie". It's been a while since I played, though.
@@Greywander87 No Papyrus only ever refers to him as the "King" or as "Mr Dreemurr", you can go back to that scene and see yourself. Same goes with the monster kid.

The first caller is the ghost Napstablook that you met before and Metatton almost says the nickname for them "Blooky". The key that you can buy of the cat and crocodile ladies allows you to enter the pink house next to Nastablook's and learn a lot about Metatton's past as well as their relationship with Alphys and Nastablook.

This is also why Alphys had actual concern about Mettaton at the end of the fight. Mettaton is actually a ghost and is part of the family of Napstablook, Dummy, and Mad Dummy. All except Napstablook have shown their ability to possess objects.

Watching Marco fumble around the core, even after he completed the puzzle to open the end.
It fills you determination.
I was quietly wishing the game would berate him for going through the north pass even though he already completed the puzzle.
Must have been relatable to see an entertainer like Metatton give his all for the performance, for the audience.

I love how when you die in this game, you know what you could have done better. It motivates you to try again and each time you get a little closer.
One might even say it fills you with determination.

Undertale's music really shows us how tempo can be a leading factor in the perception of music. The fact that "Oh! One true love"(the one you sang in), a romantic, beautiful and partially comedic(with context) track turned 180° into a sad track just because it got slowed after the boss fight really emphasizes this. Also, "Shop" being slowed in the MTT burger emporium to signify the salesman BurgerPants' sorrow and "Hotel" becoming fast paced(although it does have slight percussion added) are good examples.
There are more examples of this later in the game, some of which you may have already faced.
The part where Alphys said she would have done something if Mettaton was gone is pretty dark. There are run endings where it implies that Alphys takes her own life, depending on your actions.
Also Undyne first met Alphys standing at the edge of the waterfall in the garbage dump, make of that what you will

The battle with Mettaton is one of my favorites in this game, it's also probably one of the most intense. All of the boss soundtracks are amazing but Death by Glamour is one of my favorites in the soundtrack. I also never realized the Romeo & Juliet theme played at the end of the fight, but I absolutely love it.
The core enemies are very daunting. The Final Froggit and Whimsalot especially, saying things like "I've made my choice". The signs add to the vibe, with cryptic-ish messages... and finally, the music. The buildup at the end of the song really makes you think.
Speaking of the Final Froggit trio, their flavor texts (and responses to ACT) are mostly reflections (sometimes inversions) of the original Froggit trio.
An interesting detail is that the CORE music doesn't stop when you fight an enemy.
I know I'm late to this playthrough, but you're genuinely so enjoyable to watch! I love how you're able to analyze the songs in depth, and actually helps me understand the game with a bit more clarity even though I've played through Undertale about four times. Honestly though, I love your charisma and it's super fun to watch you play!

Your reaction to Mettaton's new body was like my own initial reaction... except the aftermath of my shock was to stare blankly at the screen for a few minutes (the ratings actually hit zero lmao)
Mettaton EX is probably the game's best overall boss fight, counting all the context, mechanics, and music. Good luck with the finale! For reasons you'll soon discover, it is probably best experienced on PC.

Yes! I was just thinking and hoping there'd be a new episode of this this morning! Great way to start the day!
Time for a very late continuation of my story (sorry, holidays had me in a whirlwind):
I remember going around the Core and having fun going through the traps we had seen, only pumped up to eleven. The new monsters I encountered, with some of them being upgraded versions of the monsters from the Ruins, only served to clearly foreshadow how close to the end the story was getting. My friends were laughing and commenting a little less, and I was making less jokes; the Core really felt that serious.
Then you get to the Mettaton Ex fight, and all of a sudden the seriousness gets thrown out for a little while. The battle is hilarious, and I couldn't take shooting his legs to get them out of my way without laughing. After the fight, though, he lays on the opera theme again, and you get the monsters of the underground cheering him. Then the implication that without batteries, he'll die...only to have it flipped on its head again when Alphys says he'll be fine. An emotional rollercoaster, that fight.
But afterward, Alphys lays on the heavy message; to cross the barrier you need the power of a human soul plus a monster soul, so you have to kill Asgore to get that power. I was furious in the call, I said that it was false marketing, that the Steam page even says you don't have to kill a single person, and felt it almost ruined my experience. Luckily, one of my friends was smart about it, and she said "remember how you couldn't use Mercy on Mad Dummy, but you still didn't kill him? Maybe it's something like that." And that gave me enough satisfaction to move into the finale.
Then...you get to Home. I cannot wait to tell you my story regarding Home, Asgore, and everything else.
Honestly I love your voice acting. I’d like to hear it more often, but obviously that’s up to you.

I've been enjoying these Musical Letsplays, can't wait to see what's going to be the next one after you're done with Undertale. People will obviously recommend Deltarune, but I think you'd also enjoy Omori. The creator, OMOCAT, and Toby Fox are friends, and have collab'd several times. One enemy from Undertale (Woshua whom you've already met at Waterfall) was inspired by OMOCAT in fact. And both Undertale and Omori are great JRPG games with incredible soundtracks and touching stories, so if you've been liking this one, you'd definitely have a blast with the latter
If times somewhat matters to him, Deltarune would be better choice, since it's shorter, plus he knows what to expect from Toby Fox by now. But Omori is just like... Made for this series. I am sure everyone would love to see both.
Great episode once again! Mettaton is among my favorite characters in this game, so it's been great to see you enjoying the dialogue and the reveal of his True Form in all of its glory :P

Here’s a fun thing. You see 12:19? See 26:55 and 28:26 in your second video, 13:56 in your third, and I’m pretty sure it actually floats by a couple more times but I’m not sure when lol
In case it’s not obvious in hindsight, no, you didn’t need to fight the warrior’s path once you solved the puzzle lol, The End’s forcefield dropped. You just needed to go south after that. Also, if you really wanted to, you actually can just wait at the sign that says “with patience, I will find my way through”, the forcefield drops eventually lol
Anyway, next episode is such a good pay off in a ton of ways, I’m excited.

I'm glad you enjoyed this fight! It's the hardest in this side of the game as far as I'm concerned! ... Well... In terms of raw difficulty, at least....
People have probably already said this but a lot of the themes are other themes with different speeds. There’s a video that shows off most of them on TH-cam.
2:48 Something I always enjoyed about his screen in particular is that in the art book next to the concept art of it, Toby comments that his intent was to "capture the feeling of leaving a party, and ending up somewhere a little dangerous".
the Core's theme makes me feel like i'm swimming against a current and the river is throwing debris at me to thwart my progress

I hate to say this cause I know UnderTale fans are gonna go crazy but I really don't think I can go without you doing "The Genocide Route" or atleast listening to the songs. mainly well.. you know what two songs if you know Genocide Route. Though there's also lots of crazy cool uses of music like how you enjoy the way motifs are used and how silence is used.
I hope you don't get annoyed and told to play Genocide by a million people bothering you.

One time in Freshman year (highschool) I fell asleep listening to "Death by Glamour" on loop. When I woke up the next morning I was still listening. During passing period later on that afternoon I was listening to it and it sounded an octave lower despite it being the same song.
I've just caught up to this series. Your editor really is an unsung hero lol.
CORE is my favourite non-boss theme :) It's just so different from everything else in Undertale.

-While first meeting Mettaton, you started by voicing him in a robotic voice and just when he said "Oh by the way Alphys betrayed you" you just went "Wait what really?", the reaction was perfect haha.
-Marco seeing Mettaton Ex for the first time : "What. the. F**"
-Me watching his reaction : "Yeah, accurate reaction".
Also, the Mettaton Ex fight was one of the most difficult neutral/pacifist one for me because of the eptic patern and that's even more difficult when doing a pacifist run, that thought remind you that killing is easy, but you have to work hard when trying to make everyone around you happy.
But back to Mettaton, I also find his fighting patern to represent a lot of his personality. In fact, this shows in a lot of different fights like how Undyne give you a broken spear to protect yourself in her fight.

I definitely fought Mettaton for a few minutes, too. Not the best at bullet hell D: Among all the other good things about the pacifist run, at least I didn't have to fight Sans (although his music is the best in the game).

There has been an ongoing joke, since this game blew up, that Toby Fox only composed around 5-10 soundtracks for this entire game, and the remaining 90 or so tracks are just remixes, medleys and modifications of the main track leitmotifs. You really understand why this joke was so famous when you realize that Toby uses everything at his disposal; Tempo, rhythm, instrumental variation, chords, ambient noises, etc. To make each track feel unique, and while the joke is far from correct, it hilariously makes sense.
It's not far off, though. It really is amazing how thoroughly he's able to reuse a single leitmotif, remixing and rearranging it to sound like a completely different song. Like, did you know that the battle music is actually the same leitmotif and Dogsong? They sound _nothing_ alike, but when you hear them played next to each other, it's there, plain as day.

@@Greywander87 yeah. That's the beauty of it. There are so many sneaky examples of such acts. Did you know that "Barrier" is actually the ambient background sound in "Amalgam"? Or that "The choice" is just super slowed down "Undertale"? Or that the deep sound that plays in a Geno run after "But nobody came" pops up is "Your best friend" slowed so much that the latter is 666% faster than the former?
And here is an interesting one. "Finale" actually has "His theme" being played distantly in cowbell in the left ear.
There's so many minor touches that are so hard to notice, and it would not even make a difference if Toby used different tracks, but he did this, and masterfully so.
if you like "Core" I strongly recommend you give a listen to Doctor from Homestuck. It's Toby's favorite song from the project (not made by him) and Core always struck me as a bit of an homage to it.
If you really want to understand how profound mettaton is, get the key from the alleyway next to the hotel and go to the pink house next to nabstablook's house

Hi Marco, loving the series so far, just have one comment. I'm not sure if it's something you haven't noticed in editing or its something that comes up post upload, but there's one section in each episode so far where the audio gets really crackly/distorted for a few seconds before returning to normal. In this episode it happens around the 16:15 mark. Anyway, just thought I'd mention since noone else seems to have. I'm glad you're enjoying the game more this time!
