    Disney hasn't made a movie with messages this good and important in a long time, if ever. This is definitely my favorite song from this movie. Every voice is perfect for their character.

      There are plenty of messages in Disney movies, it just depends on what someone deems as "important". What might be an issue for you? Someone else would scoff or be able to handle it better. We all have things that hit us differently. Encanto just showed a realistic family relationship and mental health. We also saw the negative effects of judgement and bias when it came to Bruno and Maribel.

      @@cloverlucky5977 I thought they summed it up pretty clearly when the Grandmother "Abuela" said "I was given a miracle, a second chance. And I was so afraid to lose it that I forgot who the miracle was for." She put pressures on every member of her family, but never thought about how they were feeling. Mirabel showed them it wasn't their gifts that made them special. She showed them that what they wanted and how they felt were more important than their gifts.

    The underlying genius of her voice sounding audibly forced and as the song progresses her voice gets lighter, higher and softer as if her confessions are helping to alleviate some of the pain, this movie is rapid family therapy at it's most entertaining.

    As a contralto, Luísa’s range is amazing and something I haven’t seen in Disney before, since when the girls sing, they usually sing in a higher, softer tone, I love Lin Manuel Miranda’s musicality in this song.

    I cried when this song played in the movie. Having lived my life as the typical 'strong, independent woman' takes a toll. Especially when you're the type to keep things under wraps and say that everything's fine. Well, it's not fine. I'm not the eldest in the family but I've been told I was a mature kid growing up, that I could handle heavy emotional stuff, and be all responsible for myself as well as my siblings. This song is my jam. Damn Lin Manual Miranda. You made me cry AGAIN with your songs.

      Oh same. I'm the oldest of three by like 10 years. I had so much responsibilities and pressures put on me. I've had arguments standing up for my younger siblings because I don't want them to be treated like I was. It's exhausting and thankless.

      This was exactly my story too. YES, I have a good handle of my own talents and skills, I know who I am, and I have direction and purpose. I AM a strong and independent woman. And that means that I don't live with the same _kind_ of pressure that people I know do who are still figuring out who they are.
      But that doesn't mean I have it all together, or that my life is smooth. Now that I _know_ what I can do, I feel pressure from myself AND everyone else to live up to what I can do _every single day._

    I think it is awesome that Disney made this about a female character. While men of course can also relate to the struggles of this character, and it would have seemed like an obvious choice to make this a male character, but it was incredibly impressive that Disney went the unconventional route, and used this platform to help people empathize with the realistic struggles and conflicts of a female character. Societal and family pressures are especially crushing and unforgiveing for women, especially young women. Plus it is very refreshing to see a young women being celebrated and appreciated for being physically strong. I also love how Luisa is portrayed as both muscular and feminine, because many people still believe the stereotypes that women can't be both.

      I think the only reason this may have been assumed as a man is bc of the physical strength. But the role is perfect for a female as they are usually the ones to replace the "mother" and caregiver type over a man. (I imagine Katara from Avatar the Last Airbender. Or Fiona Gallagher from Shameless)
      So I never once doubled this was a perfect role and story for a female character. (And I'm a male)

      I think that point makes the song that much more poignant - the fact that she is protecting Mirabel the entire time. Luisa feels like she's going to break because of all her responsibilities to her family; her abuela, her sisters, etc - but she continues to push - not purely out of obligation - but out of her love for them. This song is clear that she doesn't seem to resent her family for giving her these expectations; she loves and cares about them and wants to please them. But that makes the treadmill of overcommitment even harder to jump off of.

    (Caution: Spoilers) It's very interesting that the role of the strong person to be given to a woman. It's definitely not a bad thing. I think it's a very good thing, and revolutionary for the media. But it's very much an archetype of the traditional role of women, and one that is not discussed much, if at all. Luisa has to take care of everything, and is expected to be perfect in that duty, despite how over the top and unmanageable they are. Meanwhile, Isabela is the golden child, and expected to be perfect in every other way. These are harmful archetypes, for women and everyone else.

    What's so GENIUS about this movie is that because it has so many "main characters" -- way more than really any other Disney movie -- a lot of different _kinds_ of people can relate to the same movie in totally different ways. My best friend and I both relate to this movie and to pressure, but in totally different ways.
    She's the youngest in a family of Type A go-getters who all know what they can do... and she's still trying to figure out who she wants to be and what she wants to do with her life. So SHE feels the pressure of being "left behind" by a powerful, gifted family. She hardcore relates to Mirabel and the song "Waiting on a Miracle".
    But *_I_* relate to this movie the most through Luisa and this song. Because, yes, I have a good handle on my skills and talents, I know how to use them, and I know what direction I'm taking my life. But that means I also live with a ton of pressure -- just pressure on myself to not waste the talents I know I have, and pressure from everyone else who expects me to be as amazing as my skills -- all the time. There are no breaks.
    We both feel like we have to live up to a standard, just in different ways. Genius movie.

    I even cried after hearing the lyrics properly...first time when I heard it in the movie I was like omg this song is dope
    But then I searched it on you tube and read lyrics and comments and I was like noooo Luisa 😭
    And also in the video when she was having some joy and relaxing (the dancing unicorn donkey and pink cloud part)
    She had to stop cause the big rocks kept falling and she had to stop relaxing and protect everyone from the rocks 😭😭😭😭😭

    Luisa’s song says a lot about the independence we’re supposed to have, and not asking for help even when we’re at the breaking point. It also speaks about pigeonholing someone into a specific role and not allowing anything else. Luisa’s the Madrigal strong one, that’s her whole identity, and no one recognizes she is more.

    I won't lie I cried like a little child when the song played because I'm the oldest brother and I know what it's like to always have to put on this front that everything is fine nothing is wrong everything is according to plan As intended But underneath the surface everything is wrong in every possible way Because you can't accept that because that's not what you know that's not what's in in the plan.....

      I get that feeling and I was the baby in the family. Just me and my older brother. But now I'm a dad, my kids are in middle school and it's been years of 'I don't know how to do this thing or that thing but do not let the kids see that.' As far as they know, dad has it together and knows what he's doing even when I have no clue and I'm just trying to hold everything together.

    The last bit of the song really hints at how stressed she is when those big slabs start to fall on her. Task after task, chore after chore, no one thanks her on screen. She is expected to use her strength to help the community, cause thanks Grandma especially for putting it in her head that its her duty. She's never said no, because she was brought up thinking that she can't say no. So the work is piled on day after day, and it takes her little sister to notice that she is beyond stressed. Not really a spoiler but Luisa pretty much spends every waking moment serving with her strength in some way or another. By the way, they get their gifts when they are 5, she's 19 so its been 14 years of this.

  • @nhugh23
    @nhugh23 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    As the oldest sibling who became the bearer of so much family bullcrap growing up, this song literally felt like a roundhouse kick to the gut. I felt it in my very soul. "Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt and see if she can carry every family burden", and"Give it to your sister and never wonder, would the same pressure would have pulled you under." So poignant for so many girls (and probably boys too, I don't have experience of their thoughts on this). Making Luisa strong yet so delicate is so interesting. When you see her, you never consider her as a delicate character, yet she is. We Don't Talk About Bruno is definitely a fantastic song but this is the best Disney song since Remember Me in Coco IMO.

    The part of the song that I felt most is the part where she says “and it never stops” with that defeated tone. We’ve all gone through rough patches in life and we often just look forward waiting for it to end and we’ve all also had those longer, harder heavier rough patches where we feel so defeated and start to feel like it will never end and that was where she was in that part of the song. She is an amazingly relatable character. She wants to do everything she can for her family but she’s starting to get overwhelmed… but she doesn’t want the family to know she’s overwhelmed because that would make her feel like she’s failing the family. So where does that leave her?… With an immense “PRESSURE” building just “UNDER THE SURFACE”!

  • @meganwoehl5277

    I absolutely loved this song! I have always struggled with mental illness and part of that is always feeling overwhelmed and depressed, even when everything in life is going fine. I have crippling anxiety and I feel this constant pressure to "just go for things" and "stop overthinking everything", to be fun and sociable....but it wears me down like no one even knows. I just got married this last August and all the wedding planning had me so exhausted...more than a year of being on top of everything, making sure I've called all the people and arranged meetings and ordered things at the right time and just sooo much to do, and so when it was over and we got back from the honeymoon I just needed a break.... 5 months later and I still don't feel recovered, especially with the holidays and seeing so many people in such a short period of time. That was quite a long rant about my life, but to me I can relate to this song in that the pressure to be "normal" can be crushing and it makes me feel like people don't understand all the feelings I'm hiding just under the surface.

    • @RutabegaNG
      @RutabegaNG 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, this song isn't just about an older sibling having the greatest responsibility in the family, this one just about everybody can relate to on some level.
      I see you. I know the constantly feeling overwhelmed and depressed, and how long it can take to recover from something, because you don't really have the right kind of time or support to truly recover. It's hard. It's really hard. Before you find yourself falling into the abyss, though, please find something to alleviate some of that pressure. Even if it means you have to disappoint somebody else, you are important too.

I don't have time for it anymore with everything I have to do.

    Most people who I have seen react to this song mention the higher emotional impact lines and don't touch on the lines that I feel like wrap up the entire theme of the song:
    "Who am I if I don't have what it takes?" and all of the other lines that start with "Who am I if-". She has connected her whole identity around what abilities she has.
    I grew up as a "gifted" kid. The natural ability I had has long since plateaud, but back then I felt like I was only what I could do. If I wasn't doing what I was good at, I didn't get recognition or attention. The emotional impacts of that have stuck with me. I cried hearing this song for the first time (and maybe a couple of the following times).

    As an the oldest sibling in the family I felt this song in my soul. The pressure to hold it together for my brother and sister when stuff got hard, when you get a job and have to help by groceries, catch problems before anyone else notices them, because you don't want anyone else to be burdened. Having to hear about we might be short on food because bills need paying (that part about shouldering the family burdens) your the first to be called when there's a problem and the last to leave until it's fixed... it hits even harder as a dad...

This song was so mind blowing in so many ways and in so many different lines, but that one’s my favorite

  • @Jirodyne
    @Jirodyne 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    What gets me with this song, is when she is at the part in the clouds, talking about being free, being able to relax, being able to stop.... Then she looks up, looking at those problems falling, and ends with "Keeps on Growing, cuz all we know is-" Then it switches to her holding up the stuff once again, sounding so defeated, "-Pressure that go drip drip drip that'll NEVER STOP. Pressure that'll tip tip tip till you just go pop."
    That hits hard. When you're hit with the realization that it will never end. It will never stop. You will never escape. That. That right there. That is Depression. That is true Sadness. That is the point, when you give up on ever having happiness again. I would know, I hit then point when I was a Teenager, and had thoughts about Suicide. Those thoughts don't show up anymore, but that deep sadness and depression still haunts me to this day, and can never go away, cause I know I will never have a better life, and will never find happiness.
