    Lyrics
I'm the strong one, I'm not nervous
I'm as tough as the crust of the earth is
I move mountains, I move churches
And I glow 'cause I know what my worth is
I don't ask how hard the work is
    Got a rough indestructible surface
Diamonds and platinum, I find 'em, I flatten 'em
    I take what I'm handed, I break what's demanding
    But
    Under the surface
I feel berserk as a tightrope walker in a three-ring circus
    Under the surface
Was Hercules ever like "Yo, I don't wanna fight Cerberus"?
    Under the surface
I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service
    A flaw or a crack
    The straw in the stack
    That breaks the camel's back
What breaks the camel's back it's
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'till you just go pop, whoa
Give it to your sister, your sister's older
Give her all the heavy things we can't shoulder
Who am I if I can't run with the ball?
    If I fall to
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa
Give it to your sister, your sister's stronger
See if she can hang on a little longer
Who am I if I can't carry it all?
    If I falter
    Under the surface
I hide my nerves, and it worsens, I worry something is gonna hurt us
    Under the surface
The ship doesn't swerve as it heard how big the iceberg is
    Under the surface
I think about my purpose, can I somehow preserve this?
    Line up the dominoes
    A light wind blows
You try to stop it tumbling
But on and on it goes
    But wait
If I could shake the crushing weight of expectations
Would that free some room up for joy
    Or relaxation, or simple pleasure?
Instead we measure this growing pressure
    Keeps growing, keep going
    'Cause all we know is
Pressure like a drip, drip, drip that'll never stop, whoa
Pressure that'll tip, tip, tip 'til you just go pop, whoa-oh-oh
Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt
And see if she can handle every family burden
Watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks
    No mistakes just
Pressure like a grip, grip, grip and it won't let go, whoa
Pressure like a tick, tick, tick 'til it's ready to blow, whoa
Give it to your sister and never wonder
If the same pressure would've pulled you under
Who am I if I don't have what it takes?
    No cracks, no breaks
    No mistakes, no pressure

I'm also the oldest sister. My parents put so much pressure onto me. I pretty much had to put my life on pause to raise my siblings while also having to be the perfect golden child. The example. My siblings think of me as a mix of both Luisa and Isabela and how traumatic it's to me. This movie speaks to me

It's not that she feels at home helping others. It's that she derives her entire self worth from being able to help others. That actually informs the "I glow because I know what my worth is" line, since she gets her wroth from serving without taking time for herself.

I think you missed a major part of this song in your reaction which is yes, she’s strong, BUT it’s because she feels that she has to be. She feels incredible “pressure” all the time to keep it together and stay strong. But in the middle when it gets slow and she’s riding a unicorn in the sky, she’s saying wouldn’t it be nice if it was easier and she didn’t have to carry all that burden on her back. You are right that the message is very deep, and definitely what a lot of people feel

@@catnik You're right, but I was also first introduced to Encanto through surface pressure before I knew who Luisa was and even I, an arguably illiterate inbred could understand and grasp some of the content/meaning and what they were trying to say. I don't particularly pride myself on my English or my Music talent which consists of head nods and humming catchy beats. He might not have paid much attention at the beginning which lead to him missing the actual important parts, but honestly, if you are going to react to something shouldn't you at least pay attention to what you're reacting to? Or maybe he did pay attention but interpreted it differently because he had an older sister that tried solving a lot of the problems on her own. Or maybe it has something to do with his own biases. I really don't know. Like I said it's about personal interpretation

    • @trenae77
      @trenae77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +19

@@ivanolivier68 The reaction was very honest for a piece taken completely from its surrounding context. It’s also reflective of how people will watch what’s going on and miss the small details, the video is so active it’s very easy to miss them; I feel if he’d watched just a lyric version, or simply listened it would have had a different impact.

You got that line wrong. It doesn't mean she feels at home when she is helping.
It means that she is very insecure and to her all her worth is her strength. That is she always feel the NEED to help. She can't relax or enjoy at all. She feels like she is nothing without her strength which is wrong.. She is more than just her strength

This song is about the insecurity of being valued for what you can do - your material worth - and the resultant pressure to always be on your game in fulfilling that role less your value diminishes in the eyes of others. It's about the pressure to perform when you're valued as a performer and not as a person.

"I'm pretty sure I'm WORTHLESS if i can't be of service" its not that she likes helping people. Shes a people pleaser because she was raised to be one. The PRESSURE is anxiety. She is physically strong, but that doesn't equal mentally and emotionallt strong and everyone expects her to be as such, especially her younger or weaker relatives. By the way she us the middle child.. I don't know about y'all but i see alot of middle children have unrealistic life expectations on them but still expected to help everyone else. That's not to say the youngest or oldest don't deal with those issues as well, but i see it mainly from middle children.

I know she's officially the middle child but this is strong first born energy. Also if Isabella was the second born, then she's under pressure to be the "perfect female" because Luisa isn't stereotypically female. Meaning that Isabella has to make up for that AND Luisa now has to be of service because she's worthless for not "girly". (But I know in the film she's middle child)

4:07 I'm not gonna lie, I almost teared up at this little speech or whatever you gave because I'm an older sister, my brother is the middle and our sister is the youngest and I always have this mentality that I have to be strong for them and to protect them no matter what. I always feel pressured that if I'm not strong enough I'm considered weak and I even ignore all my emotions for the sake of staying strong. Even to my parents I don't want to be vulnerable because I want to be that perfect daughter that they can trust, especially that they can trust to not only take care of myself but take care of my siblings and show them how to take care of themselves too. Sometimes I wonder if my siblings or even parents know the pressure (maybe my mom, she MIGHT because she's the second oldest of four but my stepdad is the youngest of three so I doubt he'd understand). Even more so the line where she says," Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt, And see if she can handle every family burden" because I do carry a lot of burden, I listen to everyone in my family when they need a shoulder to lean on and try my best to give them advice or help them in any way I can. I feel like older sisters are silent sufferers and even though people may underestimate or misunderstand them they still go on as long as they can whether they're broken inside or not. I don't know why it's so pressuring and why it is the way it is but I really do feel Luisa on that and her song 😭😂

It's so weird how he goes at it with the idea that crushing pressure (and withstanding it) is a good thing and then is genuinely confused when after fighting Cerberus and breaking an iceberg apart with her fist, she goes flying off into a day dream where she can just relax and smile a second. As if that part of the visualisation was more weird than her balancing six donkeys on a tightrope.
Yes, Luisa's characterized as immensely strong physically and mentally, but that don't mean that taking the whole world solely onto your shoulders is a good thing.

Encanto is a story about a family and the children are each blessed with their own unique gift that they can use to help the town where they live isolated from the rest of the world, and this song is sung by Luisa who, as you’ve probably already guessed has super strength and everything you see in this song is basically a metaphor for what she feels like her life is. One disaster after another where she has to save the day and one crushing weight after another being piled onto her back because she’s the only one with the strength to hold it.
However this is just one part of the movie, the main character of Encanto is Mirabel, her younger sister and the only child in the family who didn’t receive a gift. She finds out something is wrong, her families house is literally breaking apart and their gifts are fading, so she sets off on a mission to find a way to save their gifts before they’re lost forever.
Luisa is actually one of the most relatable characters to ever be created in a Disney movie. She loves her family and does all she can to protect and help them but things keep piling on and piling on and she’s starting to feel overwhelmed but she doesn’t want her family to know that she’s overwhelmed because in her mind if she can’t do it then she’d be letting her family down and that leaves her with this unbearable “pressure” lying just “under the surface”.
If you’re wondering what the deal is with the donkeys, she goes out to LITERALLY pick them up and drop them off in their pens whenever they escape making her character even more relatable as she works hard all day surrounded by jackasses! 😏

I head-cannoned that Luisa was the middle sister. Mirabelle is obviously the youngest sister of the three. Isabella is seen as perfect and also Abuella's favorite grandchild, which translates to her being the oldest, the first grandchild. Luisa is shouldering everything for the family and that is very much a middle child trait. Her fear of failure is very relatable as a middle child.

"That leadership quality." Perfect description. I'm the youngest, I have 2 older brothers and 1 older sister, and she is DEFINITELY a leader. Not a Type A kind of leader, she just knows what she's doing, knows who she is, and growing up it seemed like she always knew. Love my big sis. ❤
Also, you should DEFINITELY watch the movie. It's all about generational trauma, getting past it and becoming stronger as a family. SO GOOD.

As an oldest sister who *did* break under the pressure, I can't listen to this song without crying. Every single time. And yet I keep coming back to it bc it puts words to my feelings SO accurately. "See if she can handle every family burden" "give it to your sister and never wonder if the same pressure would've pulled you under." Nobody ever thinks about how everything they put on us wears us down so much

  • @yasa7080

You should absolutely watch the movie! No spoilers but I’m sure you’ll love it. This song speaks to me as a big sister. You’re always trying to protect the younger ones and to live up to the expectations of your parents and it can add up to a lot of pressure. Luisa is dealing with a lot but is trying to hide it. She constantly feels pressure from all the expectations on her from everyone around her. If she’s the strong one then when does she get to relax or when does she get to be vulnerable?
To get an honest reaction, react to the songs first and then watch the movie. The songs will mean so much more to you then. The next one you should do from Encanto is The Family Madrigal!

I think one of the reason why the songs are so good is because they had a Broadway actor and director write the songs. Like it’s more musical theater compared to other Disney movies being cutesy and softer but Encanto just took all those Disney stereotypes and threw it away.

It’s a great movie and that song is heartbreaking. I can see a woman sitting at a piano playing a slow melody with this and singing their heart to the world.
That older sister vibe you mean, it’s willingness to make ourselves suffer to make everyone else in the family happy. We’re often dumped watching younger siblings, or doing as much housework as parents, all while going to school, maybe extra curricular activities or jobs. Oldest sisters grow up fast. I would go so far as to say we give up a lot of our childhood for others.

  • @SpiritedHeart94

Someone pointed this out in another reaction, but when Luisa says she knows what her worth is, the truth is she only knows *part* of what her true worth is (the part she gets from her gift), which is why she has such a hard time saying no when everyone asks her to do things (“I’m pretty sure I’m worthless if I can’t be of service”).
The attention to character detail (not just the animation) is why Disney is the best (I’ll admit there were problems with Raya & The Last Dragon, but I never said they were perfect 🤷🏻‍♀️)

The movie is about toxic perfection, about meeting the expectations from the family and the town.
Near the end of the song, Luisa (the strong lady) is first shown carrying their family house, then followed by the whole town.
Heavy burden as her special power is super strength.

Thing is, a lot of people don't give kids the credit they deserve sometimes. Most kids older than 3 have at least a rudimentary foundation of emotional intelligence. Barring a condition like ASD, most kids would absolutely understand the message of the movie. That said, the more painful traits portrayed in the movie might not connect until the kid is older (if they do, it's a reason to worry; a young child shouldn't relate to Luisa in this song). Things like parentification, chronic anxiety, and emotion suppression are damaging for anyone's mental health, but the scars set in harder when inflicted on a young child.

From this reaction we can see that people with different experiences and positions in life will not see the same thing. This is one of the family who doesn't see the pressure other people in the family take on to keep things together. It's just, 'Hey, yeah that's cool, keep it up' *as they move on ignoring the problem or just not getting it* or 'You like doing this, right? So you can do this for me, right?'

You can listen to the first few songs without being really spoiled on the plot, but the songs definitely are major story elements, so the later ones are definitely filled with spoilers.
Probably, as a song reactor, it would be best to do both at the same time. React to the movie, and as a song starts, react to the song.
The songs are so much better in context because they the verses in them drive the story forward. Also, I have found that reactors just blindly reacting to the songs only end up spending half the song asking the questions the movie already would have answered by the time the song runs in movie, so they miss out on the proper experience.

I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be a surface is more of an allude to "if you're not working if you're not helping someone if you're not pulling your weight around here then you might as well not be here because you're worthless you contribute absolutely nothing". This movie is about a toxic family and it's dynamics. Abuela is the head of the family and she threw out most of the movie doles out her love and affection and respect for how strong your magical gift is and how much you can contribute to the family how much work you can take on without cracking.

I love how you reference your older sister as being similar to Luise. I'm an older sister to the best younger brother ever... and I felt this way towards him for the first couple of decades of our lives. I got this for you bro! Don't help me, help my brother. I can take care of myself, and even though I know he can too I always wanted to make things a little easier for him. It did lead to me feeling quite abandoned in my late 20s though, when everyone was so accustomed to providing him with help and letting me figure things out on my own... but even if someone asked I'd still send them his way so that was a "me" problem, not a them problem.

This is my fav song in the film. It resonated with me immediately, I think because I'm the oldest sibling and oldest cousin. Idk why but I everyday I feel overwhelmed, under so much pressure. I have so many responsibilities to manage. It's so hard to find time for myself and when I do I always seem to stuff something up. I feel so protective of younger family members too which I know probably isn't always a great thing but I can't help it sometimes. I love sport and all types of exercise because I feel I can let it all go. I like that they made the older sister jacked and very physically capable in that way.

I feel like this song is so much more powerful in context of the greater story. She's a middle sister but because she is so strong and powerful, everyone relies on her to do everything that is even remotely challenging. She feels like her whole identity is helping other people and she has no worth if she can't be there for everyone who needs her, so she can never relax or take time for herself, no breaks, ever. No one ever thinks to ask her what SHE needs so she doesn't allow herself to think about her own needs either.

Luisa is also a middle child, just FYI. She feels this pressure to do whatever her family needs, as well as the entire village, cuz of her gift of super strength, and they all take advantage of her, most without meaning to. So here she is saying the constant pressure is making her feel like she is “worthless if she can’t be of service” which is rly sad, cuz it’s great that she can help ppl, but that’s ALL she does, all day every day, basically. And obviously it has taken its toll

This movie is about toxic family dynamics. It's technically about a family that was given magical powers and every single person in the family has a magical power. Luisa the girl singing the song her magical power is super strength. Maribel the girl with glasses is the youngest sister and she is the only one who was never given a magic power. I highly recommend watching this. This movie is basically a metaphor about toxic family dynamics, there's a golden child, the scapegoat, and the strong silent One. It's a very very good movie and it shows the consequences of playing favorites among your kids. It's really a wonderful movie I highly recommend watching it.

She's basically singing about because she is strong on the outside, she is expected to be strong. Meanwhile all the pressure and expectations is actually killing her inside because she is afraid someone might see her as weak if she fails. Being strong is a double edged sword. As far as she is concerned, all of her self worth comes from her gift which isn't actually a healthy way to live or think.
