    The most powerful moment in this song, to me, is the transition out of the bridge, where the scene goes red and Luisa catches those first two boulders. The look of pleading and despair she gives Mirabel and the growing horror on Mirabel’s face as she realizes what her family’s done to her sister. I felt that look down to my soul.

    • @katie_cant_compute

      LITERALLY
      The face of ‘See, Mira’? It’s not your fault but damn it’s hurting. I need help but I don’t know how to get out of this’, accompanied with the isolated piano/ soft music, along with the red lighting to show the danger if she carries on like this, and of course Mirabel’s face of realisation and sorrow, it’s just so powerful and maybe my favourite part of the whole song

      @@katie_cant_compute And then when Mirabel does try to help and fails, Luisa puts on a confident face and starts juggling the house, dancing, etc. Basically saying "Don't worry, I've got it."

    • @TabbyLavalamp
      @TabbyLavalamp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@chromaticblue3976 There is a lot of emphasis on Luisa's physical strength but throughout the song she's also taking care of Mirabel emotionally, right down to the beat and the tempo. This could have been a sad, powerful ballad, but it's a song you can dance to*. Every time Luisa starts to let her vulnerability and pain show, she sees the look on Mirabel's face and she starts dancing or juggling a house with her feet.
      *One of my favourite reactions was a guy grooving to the song with a huge smile on his face until the lyrics clicked in his mind.

    Luisa being the middle child really resonated with me cause she’s not the eldest perfect child who gets to make the first strides, she isn’t the youngest that’s allowed to mess up and is noticed for both good and bad, she simply IS. Luisa seems to work the most and gets the least recognition for everything. She’s expected to take care of her little sister and tries to keep her safe due to her lack of a gift and also expected to live up to the standards set for her eldest sister who is literally seen as the embodiment of perfect. It sucks too because it’s a thing that middle children tend to be forgotten, they are between everyone and get told a lot more than they should even know because they’re essentially the family’s emotional (in her case physical) pack-mule. You’ll here people check up on the youngest and the eldest but you don’t really here about how the middle child is doing, they tend to be unsung heroes quietly working to help maintain a balance within the family unit. That’s a lot of pressure.

      Like fam. The movie is about how everyone has problems unique to their position in the family and they can still come together and empathize and work through things.
      You don't have to have a "jerk sibling/bad guy" to get empathy and understanding. It's not a limited resource that is only given to the favorites. Only abusers and neglectful caretakers do that.

    The messages in this movie are incredible. But you also can't be afraid to ask for help, no one can do it all. If you don't have siblings then ask other family or friends or neighbors. A good one to do next is "The Family Madrigal", because it tells you who everyone is.

    • @creatingpulsars9979
      @creatingpulsars9979 2 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Agreed, I also think the film showed the importance of checking in on your loved ones. Luisa and Isa were both struggling and both felt they couldn't ask for help because of the role they played. Both then warmed and opened up to Maribel simply by Maribel reaching out to them. Obviously it was easier to get Luisa to open up bcause they didn't have the same contention but still. Check in on people you love and try not to judge them without trying to see their perspective is definitely a message.

    Outside of the lyrics, which are so fantastic and relatable that nearly everyone can feel, I love how protective Luisa is throughout the song. My favorite part of this (besides literally everything), is the way Jessica lays super delicate vocals on the driving beat of the chorus right after the bridge. It crates this moment that feels so fragile. And then they drop a house on it and she shifts right back to beast mode. It's so beautiful and heartbreaking all at once.

  • @LSHEVV
    @LSHEVV 2 ปีที่แล้ว +50

    Some added context for this song and why the donkeys feature so heavily in it. Because of Luisa's super strength the entire town basically uses her like a beast of burden for almost everything. She is constantly moving throughout the film doing physical errands for the town as her 'chores'. Luisa NEVER gets a day off.

    I think the lyrics "would that leave some room up for joy or relaxation or simple pleasures?" really encourage people to not take on everything but to have balance. It's too important especially for kids and young people nowadays.

    Actually, the whole movie is about toxic family roles that people can fall into. Luisa is the parentified child. The entire clip she is taking care of Mirable like some hero, but when she is free of concern, Mirable is far from her in the video. She feels responsible for taking care of her siblings and the "growing pressure" is the challenges of caring for them as they grow.

    I was eldest sibling in our asian family... the worker, the organizer, the most responsible, the adviser and the person they see as a mentally healthy anchor.
    But recently, something very bad happened to me, caused me to loose every strength I had... Doctor diagnosed me with PTSD and depression. I felt so weak and had no worth. Blamed everything on myself...
    I took anti-depressant when no one else knew, Not even my own siblings.
    But I continued to project that strong facade for my family while trying to do therapy.. Bec that time, I was reviewing on my Board exam, they expect me to pass with high grades but I failed badly because I was mentally unstable... I felt their disappointment... they dont know the real reason. I lied to them that I am still okay. That Pressure continues to grow inside me... I am measuring my own pressure because of expectations from others.
    I did not have the strength to be too open cause I feel that the time when they knew that im so broken, I would be of to no use...
    Watching and hearing the song "Surface Pressure" hit me in such a way that it broke me that night, every beat built my anxiety inside.
    The movie is very triggering and healing at the same time... And watching this encouraged me to talk to my family about everything that is happening to me. I want to fight this battle with them... Not alone...
    Thank you for reacting into this song!

I've hid behind a mask of strength and resilience because I needed to be strong for my siblings. I didn't allow myself to break down in front of them because I didn't want them to worry or be scared, being scared was for me because I believed I could handle it.

    The amount of double meanings and symbolic irony in this song is honestly mind blowing and amazing. Just about every little detail is built to be a realistic representation of the message. For example, the fact that when Luisa is singing “line up the dominoes, a light wind blows…” and the ‘light wind’ is a full blown tornado. Or that donkeys are the animal in this video, which are beasts of burden. The iceberg being enormous under the surface of the water. The song and it’s video are so amazingly crafted and is so impressive

    A favorite moment is right there at 2:35 where you paused. the look on her face, and she talks about the pressure that just won't stop. You see the stress, the pain, the sorrow at how much she is suffering and feels like no one notices. Its exhaustion at her responsibilities and the obligations placed upon her. That one frame alone says so much about her character. When you see the film, and see her character in context, it makes so much more sense.

    I also think, concerning this song, the raw emotions she shared concerning the family burdens? Being the eldest-ish from my dad's side, I was the one who had to be responsible and mature. No mistakes could be made. I don't think it was done intentionally by my father but I remember him coming to my room and literally breaking down in front of me. I was just 13 and I was already having it hard and just seeing my father breaking down made me break down inside too. But since I was the older sister, I had to act tough and as though everything fine.
    So when Luisa says 'Give it to your sister, it doesn't hurt her. See if she can handle every family burden, watch as she buckles and bends but never breaks.'
    It rang too close to home.
    And thats the beauty of this song, the expectations that are placed on you becomes lifelong shackles. Especially when you also have to carry other peoples burdens along side your own. Its just beautiful and touching that there's a song that opens up to this, its so raw and it tackles two subjects.
    The expectation we have on her because of her so called gift, strength. So since she's strong, she can take anything. She can't feel vulnerable cause that's impossible right? She's so strong and all. She can't be vulnerable inside, thats unthinkable.
    And the second is the title of Older sister, the responsibilities attached to that title is so heavy. Especially when your family is so broken and you have to bend over backwards to try and hold it up.
    But man! I fell in love with your reaction with Bruno! And this one might have left me a tiny bit disappointed but thats probably because this song hits too close to home so all the lyrics are mind-blowing as well as the beat and the way the song was composed. But man, love your reactions.
    If you're planning on watching Encanto, I also suggest that you don't listen to ALL of the encanto songs as that might ruin the surprise from the film? I mean, once you react to some of those songs, it might ruin your experience with the movie as you'll already have an idea of what to expect and you might start to understand the overall of the movie and its details ish despite not having watched the.movie.
    And trust me, you deserve to be surprised by this movie because it brings so much raw emotions that you might truly appreciate going through. Thats my thoughts though xD
    So the songs I recommend listening to would be 'Madrigal Family"
    Its the best song thats non spoiler and that gives you an understanding of the whole family. Cheers mate!

    First off, I love that you actually go back a bit after a pause, it's a different impact when the beat drops or tons changes than if you go to it straight after a pause. I really appreciate that.
    Also, it's crazy how relatable this song is and how heavy the theme is, while also being a straight bop. I feel like the Bruno song overshadows it a little but to me, this is the best song of the movie due to how hard it slaps and the message behind it. Bruno is fun and catchy but it's not much meaning behind it aside from story telling for the movie plot.

    • @The1stPurpleCat
      @The1stPurpleCat 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I AGREE! So many people say "We Don't Talk About Bruno" is the best, but that's only for three reasons:
      1. Camilio sings
      2. People are a simp for Camilio
      3. They sing a song talking about Bruno while saying "we don't talk about Bruno"
      I was really confused why no one is talking about this song, but then I realized people are obsessed with a character who had two lines. I thought it was on me cause I just really related to this song so much. I did not at all get the message that this reactor did, about telling someone these feelings.
      {spoilers for the movie obviously)
      If anything, I feel like the movie should have gone back and focused on it a bit more. She talks about all these problems, Mirabel does nothing about it, abuela does nothing about it, Luisa cries in the rest of her scene leading to the climax of the actual story and... now it's the end of the movie. And no one told me how this character arch was resolved? If it was resolved at all? Like, we don't have any closure on how she delt with it. Yeah, she could have had some time to reflect and figure it out by herself, but I doubt it. This has obviously been a "growing pressure", so she's hidden it for so long, so well, and only 'broke' when she was scared that she'd lose her powers. At the end, she was no longer afraid of losing her powers on top of everything else, so it would be so so easy to go back to hiding it all. Which I know from experience. We don't see anyone go to console her or talk to her about it. At the end I think they barely mention it briefly, and swiftly move onto the oldest sister's conclusion of her character arch and the main character's, the end.
      At the very least, hopefully some people can listen to the song and decide to reach out to someone about how they relate to the song. And hopefully the other person can help them. I'm glad I'm seeing this song be more popular than I originally thought it was.

If you’re continuing with the Encanto reactions, I’d say “The Family Madrigal” and “Waiting on a Miracle” are safe, but I’d REALLY recommend you DEFINITELY NOT watch “All of You” and probably not “Two Oruguitas” or “What Else Can I Do” either until you’ve seen the film - there are some great developments halfway through the movie and some emotional revelations that will be spoiled by those songs, and I wouldn’t want to put you in a position where those plot points don’t surprise you, because imho that’s the best way to enjoy a movie - as intended, in order, with all the context and the build of tension, etc etc. :)

    Every time I rewatch this I think about that small moment, while the doors line up like dominoes, as Luisa just so smoothly and without hesitation (waiting for even Mirabel to realize she needs something) puts herself between her sister and everything, just a quick animation that speaks SO MUCH but blink and you miss it.

    You have one of the more positive outlooks of this song I've yet seen. How Luisa is actually pushing through the struggle and insecurities she holds instead of slowly being crushed by her family expectations and what other people want her to do. Maybe it comes without context since you haven't seen the movie. IDK but good reaction.

    I suppose the songs meaning gets a bit lost without context since u feel encouraged to go on without bending and stayin tough, tho with context its a song about how she doesnt feel allowed to break and make mistakes nor to take a break, she has to carry the house (as she literally did) and she is scared of failling everyone, thinking she is worthless if she takes breaks she actually needs
    A lot of older siblings in latine families feel this preassure since they get into a parental position from young ages on the moment the lil sibling/cousin comes to life

    I just watched this and your "We don't talk about Bruno" video's both great. My phone's recommended was spot on. And I'm so glad you had similar thoughts to this song that I did that it sends such a great message to people. Overall this movie is a great step for Disney on being really on par to real life problem's and that there's no great evil or wrong do'er, just people living and what problem's can pop up as a result. When you do watch the movie please tell us your reaction or thoughts on it cuz this is a rare one Disney wise and I'd love to know your opinion as you said your not a big animated film watcher and I'm the opposite I mostly watch animated. As for another song from this movie I'd suggest reacting too would be "What else can I do" that Isabella sings.

    I also love how between this song and Isabella song, we see they are both opposite of what they WANT to be. Isabella is Ms Perfect, but she wants to be out, wild, and covered in dirt and pollen.
    Luisa is the big, tough fighter, but she really wants to be the girly feminine one, jumping on pink clouds and riding a sparkly pink donkey-corn.

    Notice how she can appear a little masculine while she uses her strength to be "of service." But then she has a moment of feminity and expresses her softer side when she sings about if she didn't have all the pressure...her voice is softer, its pink and pretty with unicorns n'shit...she can just be a girl

    The titanic and iceberg reference is great because the crash and sinking was 100% preventable. But they got cocky about how big and strong the ship is, praised for being unsinkable, and they took less precaution and relied too much on it. Luisa is the titanic. The ship doesn’t swerve, despite the many things other people could’ve done to prevent it. She is expected to face every burden head on with no help.

    Enjoyed your reaction. Agree how relatable the song is. I think the whole movie is - in the sense of how we can feel about others without thinking or realizing what’s actually going on with the other people (inner and outer pressures). I do like the positive message it gives. It’s one of the reasons I like this channel, I always feel better after watching your reactions. Agree with the other suggestions Family Madrigal introduces everyone, probably the best one to do next.

  • @Lana-lc7oy

    I'm not entirely sure if i agree that this song is about "fighting the good fight" and working through the pressure. When I listen to this song, and watch the animation along with it I'm seeing that those things are the issue. The issue is that she needs a break, she needs less pressure, she needs to release them family burdens. The most important moment to seeing this, in my opinion of course, is when the house completely falls on her. Yes, she gets up but it's not at all healthy or maintainable.

    Hey bro, while I think the lesson you draw at the end is a commendable goal, and is something we should all strive for, there's another element to the song that really comes through in context with the movie, and has some clues here. When Luisa says, "I'm pretty sure I'm worthless if I can't be of service," that's wrong, man! She has intrinsic worth as a person, regardless of her abilities. The various family members focusing on their magical powers, their standing within the family as a result, and Mirabel's apparent lack of standing (and worth) because she doesn't have a magical gift, is causing cracks in the family members, and in the house. Luisa's little eye twitch that Mirabel points out at the beginning is a clue. There are toxic pressures at work in 'the family Madrigal', including within Luisa, which must be healed.
    So while, as I say, it's commendable that Luisa puts up a brave front, handles everything that's given to her to handle, serves to the best of her ability and gift, that SHOULD all give her a sense of accomplishment.... NOT be the reason for her feeling she has no worth as a person, and yet that's what she's taking away from it. If she were approaching it healthily, she would be pleased to be of service, happy for her gift that gives her that ability, doing her best, and no more to it. However, she starts out 'behind the 8 ball', so to speak, trying to make up a deficit, a feeling that she's worthless if she doesn't do all these things. And that's not only wrong, it's counterproductive, as it shifts everything from her running toward a good thing and enjoying her successes, and makes it into running away from a bad thing for fear of being a worthless person. Just ain't healthy....

    I love watching reactions to songs and scenes but surface pressure is one of those songs so many misunderstand, this one included because they lack the context of the movie. This song isn’t about believing in yourself and knowing that you can do things. This song is about tying your feelings and your personality to one aspect of yourself and feeling that if you can’t be that then you’re nothing. This song isn’t a song of affirmation it’s a plea for help because Louisa feels that no matter what she gets asked she Hass to be able to do it she cannot fail and thus is always under immense constant pressure

I like to know that somebody felt so similar thing even at the realization that this is a good song. When Luisa sings “drip, drip, drip…” Excellent reaction brother.
    This is my favorite some of the movie but all of them are excellent. Also, Being the middle child in my family and the one seeking always for the good of my family I identify myself with the character and many times I could also feel that same pressure like Luisa’s.
