I actually played the DS version before the original N64!
TBH, I love both of them! Regardless of which game has better graphics or textures or whatever, they’re both pretty much the same game. However what I really like about the DS version is that it has more variety, more levels, and more to offer! Playing as Mario is fun and all, but having the option as playing as either Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario as well after you save/unlock them, and they all have their own unique abilities designed for certain purposes in the game, can’t go wrong with that!
While it is true that the DS version doesn’t have analog, but I didn’t mind the D-pad since I grew up with the DS. Besides if you play this game on the 3DS, problem solved via the 3DS’s analog...
If there’s 1 thing we can all agree on, is that this game needs to come out on Nintendo Switch!

Not worth it. The gameplay and level design are so outdated that it's not worth a proper remake running natively on the switch. The only option would be porting it over with little effort but the DS version or N64 emulators for phones are also better than that. So yeah... It's just not worth it either way for Nintendo.

Being an early 2000s kid, I actually grew up with both. My first console and game was a N64 with SM64 on it. Then I got a DS, and SM64DS. While I do prefer the N64 version, the DS version had amazing qualities and it allowed me to play my favourite game ever on the go. The main issue is I often mixed up what belonged to any of the versions, like I'd often forget Wario isn't in the original one!

  • @PresStar2Play
    @PresStar2Play 6 ปีที่แล้ว +12

Besides the highly improved character models, I also think the textures look a lot better in the DS version. They have a clearer sense of direction, they look more cartoony and Mario-like making them fit a Mario game better, plus the palette of Bob-Omb Battlefield is much nicer to look at. Many of the original textures give a kinda "stock" feel. The only problem is that they lack bilinear filtering, but that's the DS hardware to blame and I don't think it looks bad. But if they had it, I'd consider the DS version's graphics better in almost every way.

    • @brunothebear1047
      @brunothebear1047 ปีที่แล้ว

You can't see texture filter on a resolution of 256x192 that's why they didn't put it. Also it already gets smoothed over when your looking through the screen, also you could only see the pixelation because it's scaled to HD

The typical argument that the N64 is better is because of better resolution and easier controls.
But the fact is that the DS does in fact have better graphics, more detail and is not only the same game but with more added to the foundation. The DS version is basically the complete full potential that the N64 version had but didn't reach. The DS version had all the same worlds plus more, mini games, multiplayer and more playable characters.
I remember when I was a young child all my friends and I always talked about how we wish Luigi was playable in SM64 but wasn't. That was of course until the DS version came along and not only was Mario playable but Luigi, Wario and Yoshi as well. The DS version is just a better version of the game and there is no denying that.
Resolution or even graphics for that matter doesn't make a game better than another. You play games for fun wide gameplay experience. Which the DS version obviously hands down has more to offer gameplay wise. More stars to collect, more worlds and more characters = longer and better gameplay experience.
As for controls, that excuse is just nit picking. The controls worked perfectly for me. You just have to get use to it. If you play with the DS controls longer you'll get use to it.
The real and only reason anyone would say the N64 version is better os because of Nostalgia reasons and nostalgia reasons only. Resolution and controls is simply just an excuse. I mean I completely understand nostalgia reasons completely because I have those all the time.
Don't get me wrong it's all opinion based. If you like the N64 version better That's fine but don't act like your opinion is fact because it's far from it.

I have beaten both versions and I still can't get used to the DS controls, even using the 3DS. The lack of analog movement makes everything feel so imprecise, and makes some situations more challenging to maneuver in the DS version when compared to the N64 original.

While the DS version looks better, there are some changes that are not as good. The grass color at level one in the DS version looks puke green compared the N64 version which is light green and the pink bomb characters look less lively (like they're bored or something). I also find it funny how there's a wall missing in the DS version at 0:37.

Never truly understood the problem people had with the DS version of the game, I completed it as a kid 100% with no problems. The fact that theirs no analog controller was never that bad. I would take the DS version over the N64 any day it has way more to offer. Along with Animal Crossing Wild World I would say this tied with being perhaps the Greatest game to come out on the DS to show off the DS's true Potential and both games came out early in the DS's lifespan. Super Mario 3D Land sucked compared to Super Mario 64 DS. And while I'm at it Mario Kart DS also had more to offer than Mario Kart 7. And Super Mario Sunshine is the best 3D world Mario Game in my opinion and would love to see a remake or sequel on the 3DS.

Walther Penne The graphics may not be as good as the original but the character models look way better, it makes the N64 ones look awful. The DS one has four characters to play as, extra 30 Stars to collect, a multiplayer, a ton of good mini games and it's portable. It's just nostalgia for the N64 that's all. Super Mario 64 DS is way under appreciated.

But I hope they still keep
Mario’s SM64 voice and make them all sound higher quality just like they did with his SM64 voice clips in

The DS version does suffer in the sound department. The music sounds fine, maybe a little less fidelity, but the sound effects and voices can be pretty low-quality. There is also some variety missing in sound effects that play and mario's voice clips. Even though NDS cards support up to 512MB of storage space, this was a launch title and the rom is only about 9.3MB, not far off from the original N64 cartridge.

Yes, and desmuME can render DS version into vertically 1080p but but can only go for 640x480 even in Wii U

I just noticed that the Nintendo DS remake uses a lot of the same animations for Mario from "Super Mario Sunshine".

DS is better but N64 is more nostalgic.

I grew up with both. I like both.
N64 feels prettier but DS has more things to do

There's something so beautiful about the 64 version. It seems like a lot of effort went into every aspect of it. There was passion and the final product is art. The DS version just seems like a passionless reskin. It's okay, but it doesn't come anywhere close. Just the birds leaving the tree at 0:21 shows it all.
