I’M 70 YEARS OLD…MY GENERATION WAS SO FORTUNATE TO HAVE HAD SO MANY TRULY TALENTED MUSICIANS….
Yea, we had better drugs, ha
Don't you just love it when Mark looks into the camera while he's playing and smiles like there's nothing to it...! PURE GENIUS. 🙋♂ ❤
He just makes it seem so effortless. He just touches the guitar and it makes all these wonderful sounds.
Mark Knopfler's guitar mastery in this performance is nothing short of phenomenal. The way he makes the guitar sing is pure magic. Truly a timeless classic!
Incredible genius.
One of the best live performances ever. One of the rare occasions where the band members are on top of their game, and the band and the crowd are so in sync that the result is pure magic. 🔥🔥🔥🎸🎸🎸
That entire concert is brilliant and brilliant quality for its age too! Recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in London on 22-23 July 1983
@@basbeest2238 actually, they had some problems with the recording equipment on the 22nd, so it's all from the 23rd of July..
6:05 Guy in the background always makes me chuckle. Dude is having the best time of his life!
This is by far the best version!!!!!!!
The best yes, but not by far.
by farrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Terry Williams the drummer is just absolutely FANTASTIC, adds so much more than the original, i mean way way more!!🔥
TERRY WILLIAMS REALLY WAS GREAT ON THE DRUMS.
This is my absolute number one performance!
i am 70 and been listening to Dire Straits for decades, how did I miss this amazing version! thanks for the heads up
This was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983. My brother was in the audience and said they blew the roof off that night.
Mark Knopfler allowed Terry Williams to let it rip on the drums because it was the first time his father was seeing him play in concert. Knopfler responded with an extended guitar solo.
If you watch carefully, you`ll see them laughing their tits off at each other.
Same here, just found this couple years ago, listened to it hundreds of times since
@@cindysmith3753Just found it, think I may have a few listens. 😀
Shout out to the sound technician too. He balanced this performance to perfection despite Terry trying to steal the show on drums.
If when listening to a Mark Knopfler song your attention is drawn away from Mark's astonishing guitar playing and you're actually noticing the drummer (I mean REALLY noticing because of his freakin awesome playing) that tells you are experiencing a WORLD CLASS drummer. This is by far the best version ever of this song!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising.
It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗
What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having.
Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
People often forget the other guitarist, who is Knopler's brother, David
Not in this he isn’t. The other guitarists are John Illsley and Hal Lindes
Thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to a level most right-handed players will never reach. Truely a very underrated player.
My gosh, I never knew that !
He's widely regarded as one of the greatest guitarists alive today. Eric Clapton has repeatedly spoken very highly of his talent.
@@dabblepants I once saw someone say "Eric Clapton is God", to which a reply came back "Mark Knopfler is who God worships." 😃
And to make it all the more impressive, all finger work, no picks.
@@dabblepants I loved their live performances together. One of the few guitarists that could make Clapton have to work for it.
Mark Knopfler was so fast and fluent on the guitar, in a friendly "cutting heads" exhibition during a concert, Eddie Van Halen smiled, bowed, and gave the stage to Mark. His "chickin pickin" finger style picking impressed the best. Chet Atkins (Mr. Guitar) gave him the master knod.
This live performance was a little faster than recorded version. A little "touring powder" was not unheard of in this time period on stage, causing a bit of a rush in the tempo, and a little less serious attitude. Nasal vitamins.
@@mikefetterman6782 I've never heard any suggestion that Dire Straits indulged in such 'recreational substances'.
When exactly did Mark Knopfler and Eddie Van Halen cross paths?
In the guitar world Chet Atkins is a God. The man was a genius.
@@jjc5407 It was the 80's, all the big groups were doing some kind of drug.
Dire Straits' "The wall of guitars" just like classical Phil Spector's "Wall of sound"! Unbelievable!!!
Terry Williams OWNS this performance and he is revered for it. I watch it regularly. Thanks for listening to us. Love your reactions.
Power of music, bringing the emotions. The chills, the pure Joy.
Man I miss that sort of musicality in nowadays music.
DRUMS 💥
Fantastic.
Props to the drummer, he’s going off, Love it!!!
One of the best guitar solos ever, Knopfler very underrated by many.
WELL DONE GUYS and Thanks for listening and responding to one of the great live performances and GOOD NEWS is that from this same ALCHEMY Concert, you have the encore called "Telegraph Road" a MUST to check out!
You have TWO "once in a lifetime" performances in ONE Concert.
The drumming was spectacular as was the whole Band:)
that or the live in basel 92 version which imho is better
@@ranmaz76 When I as young ,we pronounced it "Barle" now , it has become BASIL as in "Basil Fawlty" lol
It’s ok, but the full studio version would have been better.
My favorite part in the video is when Mark starts the 2nd solo and his lick is so sick he has to grin.... OG
One of the greatest live performances ever recorded!
As good as the studio version is, I have to confess that this specific live version is the only one I listen to these days as I just love the second half and the entire new section added to it.
check the 85 version too...
The studio is the only version I listen to, this is barely the same song. It's fine for concert...but honestly it doesn't compare as a song at all.
Check out the SBD bootleg of the 1996 concert in Hamburg. Also a very special version in my opinion.
@@denroy3 Oh look, it's deaf denroy again!
@@ranmaz76With the 85 version I assume you mean the "Live at Wembly 1985" and not Live aid. I agree that Knopfler performed even better in that live version, but what I missed in that one is the band dynamics. It was just average. In the Alchemy version the band dynamics was out of this world, tempo changes, the keyboardist kind of taking over one of Knopflers sequences in one of his solos, and Knopfler just let go of his guitar and just looked in awe as it happened. In the Wembly 85 performance, that magic was unfortunately kind of missing.
Always good seeing our American cousins enjoying British music.
Some people have said Mark's vocals are sometimes not as strong as maybe they could be, but the thing which makes him stand out (for me) is that he prefers to let the music do most of the talking and singing, so his vocals might sound a little 'understated' on occasion, but his genius can never be questioned. He is definitely a 'one-off'. 🙋♂ ❤
I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. And this live performance, every group member played out of his skin... including their new drummer playing to his parents in the crowd... the GOAT is Mark.
Mark Knopfler is easily one of my favorite guitarists. His use of call and response between his vocals and guitar is just incredible!
Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
But it changes the album version to an almost completely different song.
Yeah, if you know the damn song! The travesty of reaction channels is doing the Live version, especially ones that divert from the studio version this much (the version that made it a hit, and how we first heard it). Such a shame.
@@denroy3 yes, and that's what I really hated when listening to them live. And not only 'Sultans Of Swing' but also their real jewel 'Tunnel Of Love' had lost its brilliance...
@@denroy3 If you think about it though, most live versions are different, are bigger. Back when this song came out you still had to keep your record time down somewhat for radio.
This is really good, guitar work is awesome, but don't forget the drummer who's awesome also!!
I bought my first records in London in 1960 and I can't remember being so impressed with a drumming performance:)
Did you skip the bits where they talk, e.g. 6:58 ?
@@thegroovetube3247 For once,I didn't, only because I have seen this so many times but, normally,I would because, as you know, it's all about the flow, rhythm and continuity,my friend.
@@Isleofskye You should watch Ian Paice from Deep Purple. Rightly rated as one of the best ever rock drummers.
@@CB-xr1eg Yes,I have, vaguely, heard of him.... I am joking.I bought "Deep Purple In Rock"/"Fireball" and "Machine Head" in the early 1970s and seeing Deep Purple at The Royal Albert Hall(RHA) in around 1972/73 is part of 4 Concerts I saw in quick succession. Creedence Clearwater Revival, also, at The RAH, Led Zeppelin@Empire Pool, Wembley, and Pink Floyd on their debut tour of Dark Side Of The Moon at Earls Court in 1973 with 18,000 others. Total Cost ? PF=£1 Led Zep:75 Pence and DP and CCR both 25 PENCE: Cost £2.25 to see 4 legendary Groups, in their heyday at top London venues:)......
Douglas Adams wrote "Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink."
I think this track makes that quote especially pertinent.
Amazing concert and well worth a watch/listen even if you don't do a video on it. Telegraph Road from this was excellent too.
Douglas Adams always had a way with words. "It's rather unpleasantly like being drunk." "What's so unpleasant about being drunk?" "Ask a glass of water."
Legendary performance fer sure ! ✌️❤️🇨🇦
All that solo was with a clean sound, no distortion, and it was excellent!! Some guitarists hide their playing skills behind distortion.
It's funny you talk about his voice, since his guitar is much more vocal in this version. Knopfler's guitar is so expressive, it's more like a second singer that he can then vocalize with/against. You really get that in Telegraph Road or Brothers in Arms, but it's very evident here. Really great reaction. Thank you both for the fun! Also, side note - I love watching the 2 guitarists dancing around while Knopfler is just playing and looking on with a smile.
Absolutely epic live performance
The drums are just bonkers
The drummers dad was in the audience and this was the first time he has seen his son play and was killing it so much you could see Knopfler look back and smiled he knew he was killing it too
This live version is great because you know it isn't lip synced and it stands on its own for musician quality.
I often prefer the studio version of songs for the crisper vocals as you mentioned. However, this is one of those rare occasions where the studio version just seems so much ‘less’ once you have heard this live version. It’s possibility the greatest instrumental performance I have ever seen and it always leaves me wishing I could play an instrument like them. I find it both breathtaking and inspirational.
Not a good version of the song at all, except as concert fun. It loses all the great nuance tgat made the song great.
Indeed
@@denroy3 You've moaned about this performance on several threads. You seem like a whining old woman. So you don't like it, lots of others do.
@@denroy3nah it makes it much better, the band was on fire, amazing playing and energy all round, best version for sure
@@denroy3 read the comments, you are incorrect.
...and who needs a voice when you play the guitar like that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it amazes me all the times I have listened to it!
At Last you did it . THANKS GUYS . Dire Straights are awesome Mark Knopfler one of the greatest guitarists ever . PLEASE play Walk of Life next . Thanks guys Love your reaction .
This drummer is great!! You can tell Mark is surprised as it’s his first time with the group 😂
Glad you decided to do the the live version. More swing to listen to in the Sultans of Swing in this live version.
Give it up for Terry Williams: monster drumming!
Yeah, Now you're cooking with gas!!! This version is an absolute "BANGER!!!" Good job you guys for coming back to this one!!!
It's not the same as the studio, it's just not even the same song.
@@denroy3Well your not wrong, but I'm betting this was the song that was cut down in the studio to fit a time slot.
Always have the VHS of this concert. Play guitar for 35 years Thanks to Mark. Nothing else to say. Great réaction guys
Now you absolutely have to do the alchemy live version of Telegraph Road which an an absolute masterpiece and Alchemy Live version of Tunnel of Love which has my favourite instrumental outro of any song ever. 5 minutes of absolute guitar heaven. Don’t miss out 😊🔥🔥🔥
The Holy Trinity
YES!!!!
One of the best live bands I ever saw . Mark Knopfler is an incredible musician . Thanks y'all
Love Dire Straits and this live version. Terry Williams steals the show, great drummer. I have seen Terry several times of the years, great guy and brilliant drummer.
I never get fed up of this amazing music masterclass. Hope that you appreciate their skills. nothing added...
Dire straits were way underrated, love their music
They sold over 100 million records, and their final world tour sold 7.1 million tickets, but you say they're way underrated...ok.
Dire Straits were one of my favorite groups in the 80s... there won't be anything like that anymore...
Musicians used to be Masters of their craft, able to play, improvise without any computer tech correctiing all their mistakes, without having to puzzle together a song from a thousand takes just to have a good version. Masterclass, one of the best performances I have ever heard, nothing today can match this anymore sadly, I would love to have something new that just blows my mind, but my mind stayed unblown for the last 20 years 😞
There are no "wrong" versions it's only that some versions are better than others. Try Telegraph Road from the same concert.
I am 70 and had the joy of being in stadium watching them. Spellbinding, euphoric. One of the experiences I will take to my grave. The nod to Going home xxx
Telegraph Road from the same concert showcases the brilliant musicianship of the whole band. Wonderful reaction guys. Take care and best wishes from the UK.
Great guys! Next up to see the drummer and pianist shine is Telegraph Road from the same concert
I was one of the comments for your original version, Glad you're good to your word and enjoyed this classic live :-)
It has been a privilige growing up in the 70's and 80's with Supertramp, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd and so many more.
just found you guys and Yes - Alchemy live is probably one of the best live albums ever recorded. Mark Knoffler is truly a British Rock icon as are the Band ! Terry Williams on drums this time and it's a masterclass. ps. I don't know if you've covered Telegraph Road from this concert - if not, it is a must ! phenomenal rendition by a band at the top of their game, and simply jamming out on stage !
Telegraph Road from the same concert is a banger, and even better, the keyboardist, drummer and Mark on guitar are outstanding
I was born in 76 might have been 1 year old when this came out.... Damn I would have loved to have gotten to go to see this performance! 😢❤
Double no pick because the drummer is Terry Williams (ex Rockpile and Dave Edmonds). The Alchemy version was recorded live over one night. There are no overdubs at all. Mark even apologised on the Album Sleeve for some noise on some tracks. The album is full of some legendary DS performances. Telegraph Road, Tunnel of Love and the Opening track Once upon a time in the West. When you get round to it remember that to date Mark has made 9 solo albums as well as lots of Film scores. He has a new album out in 2024.
the only bad thing about alchemy is.. that is not complete.
@@ranmaz76 That's because Mark plays too long (joking).
Great choice, thanks for posting. Imo even better, Alchemy live '83, Telegraph Road.
I was there! The sound of the clapping was not added.
The whole place was jumping, I was on the balcony and we thought it was coming down
For me, Terry Williams stood out, 40 years later, I think the best drummer I've ever seen live
Now to the live version of Telegraph Road
this is the best performance of sultans of swing the drumming of Terry Williams is stunning the whole group were all on the ball now go and listen to Tunnel of Love
i grew up on this stuff. born in 1980 and my dad had the alchemy show on VHS. ive watched it countless time. it was my introduction to guitar and rock n roll. between these guys, thin lizzy and gary moore. All iron maiden for the last 25hrs but maybe i would never have got into maiden without this introduction. this is great great track
For years I didn't know they were British. When he said way down south in London town, thought some place was called London town in the USA south. I've never been to Britain. They sounded a lot like a Southern Rock band at the time. Always loved this song.
To the hosts: this is the live version and as such, it is so many levels above the "crisp and clean" studio recording that there is no comparison whatsoever. This live performance is REAL! They are flowing and the audience was spontaneous when they joined the flow and started clapping.
Thank you so much reacting to this masterpiece 🙏. Really appreciate it ❤🎉
"skate away" aka roller girl
another Great underrated song by Dire Straits.
thanks again!
That drummer is a machine!!!
Hi so glad you watched this. I was at the gig and i was clapping with everyone else it's not a add on. Another one to watch from the same gig "Dire Straits-Telegraph Road Live- aLCHEMY Tour 1983" again the band at it's best.
Telegraph road, from this concert, is epic also!!🔥😊
If you enjoyed that track, then 'Telegraph Road' from the same concert night is a sure-fire follow-up, even better!
The energy!!!
This is a spectacular performance that seems to overwhelm everyone who watches and listens to it. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing in this is at a peak of excellence that very few guitarists could reach. He can obviously play very fast when he wants to, but it's not mindless speed like lesser guitarist might do. He plays in service to the song and with such beautiful tone, touch, melodic quality and creativity that combine to his signature style. The drummer, Terry Williams, is a live wire in this as well--fantastic drumming. As for the vocals, this is an extended live version of the song in which Mark is obviously being more playful and loose with his vocal delivery. I think it's fun, but the recorded version is clearly more tight and expressive in a different way.
How on earth are you American's just listening to Dire Straits? This group are Music legends with number one songs ALL over the world.
I'm Serbian 'import' since 1978 and I've listen to Dire Straits for over 40 yrs; now - also when MTV came along they featured Dire Straits all the time! Listening to them in Camaro V8 speeding through the desert was an experience I'll never forget! It was great being young during the 1980's!
We didn't have cell phones and were involved in the concert! We ALWAYS clapped and sang along!❤❤❤
I was there. Hammersmith Apollo ‘83. What a gig. Still haunts me in a good way to this day.
I love both versions but this is by far the best. Not everyone would have a do-over but I respect you both for being open to exploring this one a little deeper.
Weird Al asked for permission to do a parody of “I Want My MTV”. Mark agreed, with only one condition, that he got to play lead guitar on Al’s version - called “Beverly Hillbillies”
#hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
I had to LMO at you guys doing a full book report after reading 1/2 of the book and after watching, mostly Mr., spend so much time looking at Samantha or closing your eyes while one of the greatest live performances ever is going on and, for one thing, missing Terry Williams going ape on the drums in one of the greatest drum performances ever. I didn't stick around for your wrap.
Mark Knopfler is a great guitarist. Dire Straits have a pretty good catalog of songs, but Knopfler has gone on to record a lot of solo and collaborative stuff. In this song his guitar takes the unchallenged lead but in many of his other stull he's done he blends very well with other sounds in an almost subtle style - masterful.
The headband and wristbands stops sweat running down into your eyes and hands. Under hot lights and the energy. The energy. I wish I had been at this concert. It's phenomenal on tape. Can you imagine being there?
greatest guitar solo ever done...
Just EXCELLENT!!! Wish I was there. DIRE STRAITS were just phenominal. The good old days, yet brilliant!!!!! 😯😯
For me this is a matchless performance!
6:37 that camera move, that's cinema!
Now that’s what I call rock & roll.
was lucky enough to have seen them back then. it was a fantastic show.
You now have to listen to Telegraph Road (Alchemy Live again cos it is them at their best) to not only hear more change of pace of solos but also some of the best keyboard playing in rock music as well. Warning - it is longer😁
Great reaction Sam and Phil! When there are multiple versions of a song available, you might as well acknowledge to yourselves that you're not going to please everyone. I'm happy that you are ok doing more than one reaction to a song when asked. You two have a great channel, so keep it up! BTW, Brothers in Arms is a very good Dire Straits song.
But the studio version is my favourite of that one.
Thanks Mike! You've been with us since day 1! 👊
This version has very energy, all the musicians nailed it.
I believe the pianist was Alan Clark. As a six-year-old child, Clark received piano lessons. From the age of nine years, he taught himself. At the age of 13 and while still a pupil at Chester-le-Street Grammar School, he began to play Hammond organ in working men's clubs in the northeast of England, and thereafter forged a successful career in music which included playing with a reformed Geordie which featured Brian Johnson (who would later join AC/DC). Brian Johnson and Mark are from the Newcastle area in N E England, Mark was born in Scotland. Knopfler was born in Glasgow and raised in Blyth, near Newcastle, from the age of seven. After graduating from the University of Leeds and working for three years as a college lecturer, Knopfler co-founded Dire Straits with his younger brother, David Knopfler. Mark Freuder Knopfler was born on 12 August 1949 in Glasgow, Scotland, to an English mother, Louisa Mary (née Laidler), and a Hungarian Jewish father, Erwin Knopfler. Wikipedia.
Can I just say it's not about the wrong choice, I've noticed alot of reactions from other reactors tend to think Live is best, but when 99% of these tunes came out we listened and love the studio versions.
However this is excellent. Lol
I think the first time you listen to a song it should be the studio version.
Saw Dire Straits often in my youth, including in Paris on the Alchemy tour, and I can vouch that the whole gig was sooooo good.
Great reactions. During the '70's, '80's and '90's I attempted to attend every conceivable genre of live music concerts (Rock, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Blues, Reggae). One thing that was a constant is musicians love experimenting with their established songs. It's a main reason why live versions are usually longer than the studio versions. My first experience with Dire Straits was during the film "An Officer and a Gentleman". Richard Gere was listening to "Tunnel of Love" on the jukebox. That interlude stuck with me, and I just had to know who performed it.
The look Mark gives at the end is great:
"feckin' smashed it"🤘🎸🤘
It was definitely us in the Audience joining in, not added in after the fact.
DRUMMER’S FATHER WAS IN THE AUDIENCE FIRST TIME SEEING SON PLAYING LIVE….
