This was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1983. My brother was in the audience and said they blew the roof off that night. Mark Knopfler allowed Terry Williams to let it rip on the drums because it was the first time his father was seeing him play in concert. Knopfler responded with an extended guitar solo. If you watch carefully, you`ll see them laughing their tits off at each other.
Thing about Mark Knopfler is that he's left-handed but mastered a right-handed guitar to a level most right-handed players will never reach. Truely a very underrated player.
If when listening to a Mark Knopfler song your attention is drawn away from Mark's astonishing guitar playing and you're actually noticing the drummer (I mean REALLY noticing because of his freakin awesome playing) that tells you are experiencing a WORLD CLASS drummer. This is by far the best version ever of this song!
The studio version of this is one of the best songs for cruising. It's nice that you enjoyed it so much.🤗 What I love about this clip is how much fun they're having. Making a living like that wouldn't suck.
WELL DONE GUYS and Thanks for listening and responding to one of the great live performances and GOOD NEWS is that from this same ALCHEMY Concert, you have the encore called "Telegraph Road" a MUST to check out! You have TWO "once in a lifetime" performances in ONE Concert. The drumming was spectacular as was the whole Band:)
Mark Knopfler was so fast and fluent on the guitar, in a friendly "cutting heads" exhibition during a concert, Eddie Van Halen smiled, bowed, and gave the stage to Mark. His "chickin pickin" finger style picking impressed the best. Chet Atkins (Mr. Guitar) gave him the master knod.
This live performance was a little faster than recorded version. A little "touring powder" was not unheard of in this time period on stage, causing a bit of a rush in the tempo, and a little less serious attitude. Nasal vitamins.
Such a great live version! Dire Straits are a great British rock band from the 70's-90's. Mark Knopfler is one of the best guitarists around. They have had so many hits including "Walk Of Life", "Brothers In Arms", "Money For Nothing", "Telegraph Road", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "So Far Away" etc. They don't have a bad song.
Yeah, if you know the damn song! The travesty of reaction channels is doing the Live version, especially ones that divert from the studio version this much (the version that made it a hit, and how we first heard it). Such a shame.
@@denroy3 yes, and that's what I really hated when listening to them live. And not only 'Sultans Of Swing' but also their real jewel 'Tunnel Of Love' had lost its brilliance...

As good as the studio version is, I have to confess that this specific live version is the only one I listen to these days as I just love the second half and the entire new section added to it.
@@ranmaz76With the 85 version I assume you mean the "Live at Wembly 1985" and not Live aid. I agree that Knopfler performed even better in that live version, but what I missed in that one is the band dynamics. It was just average. In the Alchemy version the band dynamics was out of this world, tempo changes, the keyboardist kind of taking over one of Knopflers sequences in one of his solos, and Knopfler just let go of his guitar and just looked in awe as it happened. In the Wembly 85 performance, that magic was unfortunately kind of missing.
Some people have said Mark's vocals are sometimes not as strong as maybe they could be, but the thing which makes him stand out (for me) is that he prefers to let the music do most of the talking and singing, so his vocals might sound a little 'understated' on occasion, but his genius can never be questioned. He is definitely a 'one-off'. 🙋♂ ❤
Douglas Adams wrote "Mark Knopfler has an extraordinary ability to make a Schecter Custom Stratocaster hoot and sing like angels on a Saturday night, exhausted from being good all week and needing a stiff drink." I think this track makes that quote especially pertinent. Amazing concert and well worth a watch/listen even if you don't do a video on it. Telegraph Road from this was excellent too.
Douglas Adams always had a way with words. "It's rather unpleasantly like being drunk." "What's so unpleasant about being drunk?" "Ask a glass of water."
I feel the absolute genius of this live extended version is EVERY riff and excursion on MK's guitar is based entirely on the chord structure, progression and melody of the song. He never departs to go off-piste in showing his finger picking range: he blows it out of the water constraining himself such that every solo phrase is a complex yet melodic echo of the song. It's why it has zero dissonance. And this live performance, every group member played out of his skin... including their new drummer playing to his parents in the crowd... the GOAT is Mark.
I often prefer the studio version of songs for the crisper vocals as you mentioned. However, this is one of those rare occasions where the studio version just seems so much ‘less’ once you have heard this live version. Clapping is legit. Been to such concerts. Oh yeah.....we all clap along. Any never forget that you hearing almost endless riff-breaks between the each line of the lyrics. If you play lead, you'll greatly appreciate the difficulty of singing/picking lead at the same time! (and finger picking to boot). You've seen one of, if not the, best life rock performances of all time, and I've been to many (73 year old Brooklyn NY garage band drummer from the 60s). The "machine gun" drumming you hear is performed by Tim for his father's enjoyment, as this was the first time his dad had seen him perform in front of a live audience (gotta show off to dad). I've play rock/blues drums since I was 13, but there ain't no way I could move like that and keep that stamina. Man is an animal. Great show. You two are excellent together (but one of you are much easier on the eyes :).
The drummer is from Wales Terry Williams as was many of their road crew. The line up changed over the years. The only long-time original members were Mark Knopfler & John IIInsley the base guitarist. Hal Lindes a Californian was the rhythm player here. You have just watched here the best ever live performance from any band in history. Playing their long play jams. Better than their studio records. MK did all of the arranging of the music. It is hard to play a lead guitar & play like he does. You try it!! See how you do. No one cares about the vocal performance when in a studio they use many tricks to make it sound smoother. Having said all of that I can see you can appreciate this live performance. It is by far better than the studio version. Miles apart. Here you have a group of musicians all brilliant & at the very top of their game. Hard to top a performance such as this one. This was the last of 2 performances for the Love Over Gold tour which I saw. It was a natural high to witness this performance. I feel sorry for younger generation who did not see groups of the 60's 70's & 80's so much talent all competing for the top spot. MK is a self taught guitar, Virtuoso. A left-handed man playing a right-handed guitar using his fingers not a pick. I am glad he did not get guitar lessons. He is unique. xo So, glad to see you enjoy this 41 years ago now.
This is a spectacular performance that seems to overwhelm everyone who watches and listens to it. Mark Knopfler's guitar playing in this is at a peak of excellence that very few guitarists could reach. He can obviously play very fast when he wants to, but it's not mindless speed like lesser guitarist might do. He plays in service to the song and with such beautiful tone, touch, melodic quality and creativity that combine to his signature style. The drummer, Terry Williams, is a live wire in this as well--fantastic drumming. As for the vocals, this is an extended live version of the song in which Mark is obviously being more playful and loose with his vocal delivery. I think it's fun, but the recorded version is clearly more tight and expressive in a different way.
Y'all had almost as much fun as we did back in the day! Ya gotta love Dire Straights. Keep digging. There's more treasure to be found.❤ I love watching you guys.
It was the crowd clapping in rhythm with the song . I was at this performance on July 22 at the Hammersmith odeon in 1983 . It was by far the best performance of a artist I ever saw up to this present day
Sometimes but very rarely a live performance is so sublime it transcends all musical genres so no matter your taste in music you can only watch and listen in dumbstruck amazement this is one sutch performance. The gods looked down on the band and it all came together and they could do no wrong. Just pure perfection
just found you guys and Yes - Alchemy live is probably one of the best live albums ever recorded. Mark Knoffler is truly a British Rock icon as are the Band ! Terry Williams on drums this time and it's a masterclass. ps. I don't know if you've covered Telegraph Road from this concert - if not, it is a must ! phenomenal rendition by a band at the top of their game, and simply jamming out on stage !
Great reactions. During the '70's, '80's and '90's I attempted to attend every conceivable genre of live music concerts (Rock, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Blues, Reggae). One thing that was a constant is musicians love experimenting with their established songs. It's a main reason why live versions are usually longer than the studio versions. My first experience with Dire Straits was during the film "An Officer and a Gentleman". Richard Gere was listening to "Tunnel of Love" on the jukebox. That interlude stuck with me, and I just had to know who performed it.
8:40 you do hear that he does not follow the lyrics as written for the studio album? He jazz it up and improvise on certain words and phrases. Just because this was live, he felt like he could improve or be in the moment, something the avid fan will take notice to in the audience.
I'm Serbian 'import' since 1978 and I've listen to Dire Straits for over 40 yrs; now - also when MTV came along they featured Dire Straits all the time! Listening to them in Camaro V8 speeding through the desert was an experience I'll never forget! It was great being young during the 1980's!
I saw them live twice, I can assure you the clapping was real. His guitar work is just so incredible. And they look like they're having so much fun. Glad you enjoyed it.
Great reaction Sam and Phil! When there are multiple versions of a song available, you might as well acknowledge to yourselves that you're not going to please everyone. I'm happy that you are ok doing more than one reaction to a song when asked. You two have a great channel, so keep it up! BTW, Brothers in Arms is a very good Dire Straits song.
Musicians used to be Masters of their craft, able to play, improvise without any computer tech correctiing all their mistakes, without having to puzzle together a song from a thousand takes just to have a good version. Masterclass, one of the best performances I have ever heard, nothing today can match this anymore sadly, I would love to have something new that just blows my mind, but my mind stayed unblown for the last 20 years 😞
Almost everything post 2000 just seems so bland or boring or just plain crap, and that includes rap, for which there is way too much of everywhere. Stuff like this with a full band of elite musicians... where are they? Probably buried under that huge pile of mediocrity that is the mainstream
You’re probably right about the vocal sounding better on the studio version. Singing lead while playing such cool guitar fills is really difficult. There’s a reason most bands have a lead singer who plays rhythm guitar, bass, or nothing, and a lead guitarist who does all of the hard guitar parts. Knopfler is a special dude.
I was in Hammersmith Oden London this night back in 1983 aged 29 now 68 it’s still one of the greatest musical experiences of my life second only to Queen at Wembley Stadium 1986
I was there! The sound of the clapping was not added. The whole place was jumping, I was on the balcony and we thought it was coming down For me, Terry Williams stood out, 40 years later, I think the best drummer I've ever seen live Now to the live version of Telegraph Road

The Holy Trinity
YES!!!!
Greatest live performance EVER i listen to it in the morning to start the day and in the evening to end the day. It makes everyday a great one.
Great guys! Next up to see the drummer and pianist shine is Telegraph Road from the same concert
The drummer is smoking the drums! So relaxed, but nailing it!
Power of music, bringing the emotions. The chills, the pure Joy.
Man I miss that sort of musicality in nowadays music.
The guy on the drums is an animal.
Telegraph road, from this concert, is epic also!!🔥😊
The iconic headband comes from the early days of playing tiny, hot, smoke filled pubs and clubs - where the pouring sweat burns your face and eyes.
Y'all had almost as much fun as we did back in the day! Ya gotta love Dire Straights. Keep digging. There's more treasure to be found.❤ I love watching you guys.
The look Mark gives at the end is great:
"feckin' smashed it"🤘🎸🤘
It was definitely us in the Audience joining in, not added in after the fact.
That was the crowd jumping in at the right time no additions whatsoever absolute masterpiece ❤
I know- what is not to get???? but you so do get it. What fun, watching you catch the groove and ride it. Thank you!!!!!
just found you guys and Yes - Alchemy live is probably one of the best live albums ever recorded.
Drums absolutely the stand out on this!
Great reaction!!
There are so many great Dire Staits/ Mark Knopfler songs!! He is truly one of the best “artists” of all time!!
8:40 you do hear that he does not follow the lyrics as written for the studio album? He jazz it up and improvise on certain words and phrases. Just because this was live, he felt like he could improve or be in the moment, something the avid fan will take notice to in the audience.
How on earth are you American's just listening to Dire Straits? This group are Music legends with number one songs ALL over the world.
Respect for listening to the comments, and actually uploading a second reaction to the same song, first time I've come across that.
But the studio version is my favourite of that one.
Thanks Mike! You've been with us since day 1! 👊
Us 70 year olds had the best music and the best times. We never knew how lucky we were
It has been a privilige growing up in the 70's and 80's with Supertramp, Dire Straits, Pink Floyd and so many more.
Pure talent. No electronic gibberish. A clean pure sound
This is the good stuff 🌟🎶🎸
That drummer is a machine!!!
Had the opportunity to see them in concert once, surely was a bucket list type of concert and when we left knew we saw something very special
I was in Hammersmith Oden London this night back in 1983 aged 29 now 68 it’s still one of the greatest musical experiences of my life second only to Queen at Wembley Stadium 1986
Of course it was the audience clapping!!! This is the best LIVE Version!
Saw Dire Straits often in my youth, including in Paris on the Alchemy tour, and I can vouch that the whole gig was sooooo good.
I was there! The sound of the clapping was not added.
The whole place was jumping, I was on the balcony and we thought it was coming down
For me, Terry Williams stood out, 40 years later, I think the best drummer I've ever seen live
Now to the live version of Telegraph Road
Love Dire Straits and this live version. Terry Williams steals the show, great drummer. I have seen Terry several times of the years, great guy and brilliant drummer.
Love your kids, got their in the end to this live version, this is literally the animated I've seen yous react to a song love it keep up the good work ❤️
Glad that you saw this version. Epic is a good word here.
