Terry Williams, the drummer, was just amazing in this. This is one of the greatest live rock and roll performances ever. Someone mentioned that Terry's father was in the crowd, and this was the first time he saw his son perform in concert. Terry was known for hitting the drums really hard. He is retired now, in his mid-seventies.

He is completely unhinged on this performance. It's just outstanding, and who would have thought this song would sound so incredible with it.
@@rickgpz1209 That must have been boring. How often did he get to cut loose with them? Rockabilly is not known for wailing drums. Just tight little shuffle beats. More restrictive than speed metal. He must have loved playing with these guys. Knopfler, a brilliant musician in his own right saying, "go for it."

Mark Knopfler's improv skills are simply insane. It's a very simple song when you just look at the chord progressions & rhythms etc. but the tightness & skills of the band & Marks individual flair just makes it something truly special.

I saw them at Hammersmith odeon,and Wembley arena,on the Love Over Gold tour, absolutely awesome.
His playing is extremely polished for how fast he plays....guessing it's a result of the three finger style he uses. Most guitarists who use a pick and play that fast don't sound as crisp and polished.
Marks playing is very underrated. And the drummer is going nuts. I heard his Dad was in the audience to hear him for the first time. Show off. Lol.
It's rare that I like a live version of a song as much as the studio version. This is a masterpiece!

10 of the best minutes on TH-cam. Dire Straights was so talented and tight. And Mark Knopfler is one of the greatest guitarists in history, with a totally unique, slinky, fluid, understated style. Hes super fast but doesnt overplay - just ALWAYS hits the right notes at the right time.
And Terry Williams is a beast on the drums. Love how you noticed how the band responds to his mad fill about 3 minutes in - he challenges them to up their energy and they do. So great.
How Mark Knopfler plays guitar so beautifully just by plucking the strings is a wonder to behold, and incidentally, he's left handed...! He's just an incredible singer/songwriter/performer/storyteller.
his attack and tone are so unique. Mark seems to always do less when he can. Other guitarists would make a lot more noise but Mark is subtle and it's just so intriguing listening to him solo

Private Investigations is a real work of art. Mark Knoffler is in my top 20 of guitar gods.

Knopfler was, and is, one of the five best lead players I've ever heard (been listening to music since my mother played the piano as a kid, now 80). I love players that finger pick, and Knopfler is not only fast, but clean! Great player, and an outstanding rythym section.
From the same live concert video, "Telegraph Road" is (to me) the pinnacle of their art. Guitar, lyrics, drums, keys, harmonies, bass... it's perfection. Like this, but turned up to 11.

Telegraph is the peak of his storytelling song writing style. I know Brothers in Arms gets a lot of attention as far as albums go, but Love Over Gold, I feel, is their best.
Aileen, the reason Mark Knopfler's voice is so rich is that he was raised the North East of England, my neck of the woods. He is telling a story of when he nipped into a pub in London on a rainy day and caught a band playing. The have been immortalized as the Sultans of Swing. If you liked that you will love "Money for Nothing."

Today marks 2 months since my dad passed away at age 78. Dire straits was his favorite group hands down. This song has popped up in my YT feed a lot yesterday and today which is crazy!!! Anyway, I’ve heard this song plenty of times, and it’s nice to see and hear someone react to it for the first time and see them in disbelief. Mark knopfler guitar playing is so good and has such a distinct sound. I truly enjoyed your reaction. Thanks for giving me a fond memory of my dad

Sultans of Swing has been one of my favorites for as long as I can remember. This live version is superb due to the tasteful and elegant improve from the band members.
OMG Aileen I'm so happy you did this song, and this version. It is so awesome watching you fall in love with Dire Straits. Both Dire Straits and Duran Duran defined the 80s. This was a music masterclass. Mark Knopler is one of the most important, and underrated talents in music history. I have watched countless reactions to this song, but yours is by far and away THE absolute best!!! This just made me so happy!!!!
Thx Aileen for giving props to the rhythm section. They are so groovy and absolut solid. Without them, there wouldn't be the foundation for the guitars and vocals to shine.

This is a timely reaction video of a fantastic Dire Straits live performance because it's included in the recently released Dire Straits 64-track live compilation, which is a mixture of their live albums plus some previously unreleased live material. Definitely a good stocking filler to introduce the band to a newcomer.
Aileen, I've watched nearly 70 or so 'reactions" to this video. Once again, watching yours, you are special in your ability to quickly 'pick-up' on the ever-so-real musical performance aspects of this amazing performance. I think a lot of this has to do with the fact that you sing. I'm a musician myself and I actually know just exactly what these folks are doing with their instruments to achieve the incredible overall effect that they are able to share and present. That does not, however make me any less 'jaded' as to how great they are or how profound your 'reactions' are to witnessing this amazing video. All blessings and all power to you for what you are doing, have done, and will do in the future, that you are so willing to share with us. All we can hope for is to do our best to harmonise with your profound efforts and great achievement.
Great reaction! Dire Straits are amazing. Mark Knopfler is a master player and master story teller too. Love his distinctive sound. You only need to hear a few notes to know you are listening to him play. You have many more legendary songs to discover from this band.
And the joy you see and feel and hear is the joy of a band that is busy absolutely nailing it, knocking it out of the park, gilding it with carefree ease - and Sultans of Swing was their first song on rotation, before they even had a contract.

The drummers dad was in the audience and this was the first time he has seen his son play and was killing it so much you could see Knopfler look back and smiled he knew he was killing it too
Being a working guitarist in the 70's was absolutely incredible with the likes of Hendrix, Santana, Clapton, Page, Beck, Iommi, Gilmour, Lifeson, Townsend, Young, Howe, Blackmore, Walsh, May, Van Halen and Knopfler to listen to although I didn't understand just how lucky I was until decades later when we slowly went back to formulaic "pop". This was the "Bands" era where creativity and ingenuity stood supreme and the Studios took a back seat. The music you are diving into now was created with love and passion, which is why us 'old timers' love to see young'uns discovering what we took for granted growing up. Love your reactions and it's OK to stop and go back because you enjoy it so much we've listened to them thousands of times.

There are a few guitarists who have a VERY standout unique style. Mark Knopfler is one of them. No matter the choice of guitar, his fingerstyle is incredible. I'd include SRV, because he plays like a man-possessed, Tom Morello for the sheer power, and Eric Clapton for his overall ability to capture the mood. The player who always blows me away the most, is Lindsay Buckingham, when Fleetwood Mac do big guitar tunes. I'm 52 years old. I've been a self taught guitarist and bassist from the age of 16. I'm fascinated by how he gets the sound he does. Honestly, watch his picking hand. There's also a duo from Mexico called Rodrigo e Gabriella, who are a double act, both playing nylon string acoustics, doing instrumentals. Rodrigo is the "regular" player, Gabriella is someone you can't take your eyes off. Her role is tapping different parts of the body, and fretboard, in addition to joining in with insane flourishes and counter melodies.
Telegraph Road also from Alchemy Live is worth checking out... that said they did a lot of good stuff.
One of the reasons this is recommended over the studio version is of course the live aspect, but also it developed over the years. This was their first hit, and when the band started it was a 2 guitar, 1 bass and drums... and the song was brilliant, but as the band progressed they added more instruments. If you check out "On Every Street" (which was from their last album) from the "Into the Night" concert you will see a stage just packed with all sorts of different instruments.
I've loved this song for years but can't stop watching reactions to it - seeing people loving the little fills and mini solo but likely not knowing what's coming... Love it, tune never fails to give me chills 😁

Dire Straits is a great rabbit hole to jump into. The song writing and guitar work of Mark Knopfler is very unique and non traditional, and with his vocals it gives the band its own unique sound. Their music is versatile yet very easy to listen to and all have great stories to tell.

My dear, I can't believe you never heard this song before. It's one of the most played songs on the radio. I'm happy you loved Terry Williams on the drums. One of the best drummers in the world, and yet very underrated. This was the first time his father went to see Terry playing, so he gave it all. Although all songs are good, Telegraph Road, Private Investigations and Tunnel of Love are a must. Telegraph Road is a whirlwind of emotions, and you won't regret listening to it. It's pure magic.
Such a tight band that obviously loved playing together and getting the crowd into it.
The entire band could take over the lead role whenever it was needed, they just knew when to lead the audience to the next level within the song. And they could improvise the xxxx out of having fun too.

This is one of those songs you know exactly where and when in your life that it ruled the radio. The guitar tone is in part because he only uses his fingers ... no pick, with a nice clear tone.

Your expressions, your face and the emotions that you displayed during this song was incredible, it really did give me that first time experience again and I am in your debt for your ability to make that happen. What a delightful and enjoyable reaction. And damn, that drumming! Wow. I remember when I first heard this on the radio and Junior High and I raced down to the record store and bought the single. You really owe it to yourself to listen to the studio track as well. You will love everything about the arrangement and the clarity in the recording and it still communicates all that energy, even for a studio recording.
When you were commenting at the end about how you're really starting to like classic rock, so many things pop into mind but for some reason, I just have a feeling you would really enjoy Ten Years After, from the late 60s into the early to mid 70s. If you haven't already done their massive massive hit, I'd Love To Change the World, I would certainly do that, but they have so much good stuff. They were British and played at Woodstock as well. Alvin Lee is the front man on the Gibson guitar but all four members of that band were just incredibly talented, most of them had Jazz backgrounds.
I've Been There Too, this is a powerfully emotional song with an important message but it also turns into quite the jam, like so many of their songs.
Once There Was a Time starts off so slow and simple and the lyrics are absolutely hilarious and it just turns into absolute chaos of a focused intensity and structure and it's just so fun.
Both of these are off of the same album, A Space in Time, which had that hit I'd Love To Change the World. But that whole album became so immensely popular. And there are lots of transitions between songs on the record that are so creative and so amazing.
Dire Straits have been the soundtrack to my life. The greatest thing about this performance is just what a blast they are all having just playing a great song in front of a appreciative audience.
When I hear the song, I always think back to my time as a guitarist and singer in a rock band, and the gigs in bars and clubs.
Mark kicks ass. But the drummer is the real bad ass. Amazing!
As a fan for 40 years or more, it’s a joy to see someone else discover and appreciate their brilliance. I’d recommend “Telegraph Road” from the same concert as a good next step. There are lots of steps to come though. It’s surprising that as one of the biggest bands of the 1980’s worldwide, they sometimes feel all but forgotten these days.

There has never been another song like Sultans, even by Dire Straits. I only recently discovered this version, mainly because the original is so good I didn’t think they could replicate the same vibe on stage. Instead they revved it up and because it seems it was the last number they obviously wanted to give the crowd something to remember. The whole band is as tight as a drum, which segues nicely to the performance of the drummer. He must have lost several pounds in that number alone. Probably twice the length of the original but worth every extra second. Entrancing reaction as always Aileen.
Mark Knopfler has a unique fingerpicking style, but they’re all great musicians.

If you haven't done it already, I think you'd love the Frog Leap Studios cover of Sultans of Swing. I grew up with the original from Dire Straits and I still love it, but the Frog Leap cover is my new favorite. Adds some serious metal to the song and it just SLAMS!! So glad you liked this one.

And maybe talking bout classic rock: maybe take a look at Queen There gig at Live is really worth taking a look at and I think you will live Freddy Mercury
Mark Knopfler, Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather of Toto are in my opinion the best rock guitarists that busted out in the late 70s...you can't confuse Mark Knopfler's tone and style with anyone else, it is quite unique. I was in high school when this came out and it was during the disco domination of the charts, and it was a bright light at the end of the rock and roll tunnel that things were about to change...🔥🔥🔥👍

You need to hear "Brothers In Arms". Mark makes the guitar weep out emotions in it.
Two other songs to consider from Dire Straits; "Brothers in Arms" and a bit rarer song "Private Investigations". Telegraph Road, Expresso Love, and of course Money For Nothing are also excellent, as well as popular songs. Other band/performer to consider: Genisus/Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight, Mama, I Don't Care Anymore and so many more great ones.

I get a kick out of watching these reactions from Gen Y, Gen Z, and Millennials listening to music from MY and my PARENTS era (baby boomers and Gen X).
I am SO blessed to have been born in 1972, and growing up listening to 1960s to 1990s music when first released. It started to die by 2000. My college freshman daughter wants nothing to do with anything released after 2000.
Watch Miami Vice, and 1980s MTV, too.

I was a teenage kid driving around in hometown of Orlando, FL, when my local rock station played this song for the first time. I had to pull over to the side of the road and give this song a good listen. I went to a record store and bought the album right away. The band is great and Mark Knopfler never stops soloing throughout this song. Still love it.
Mark Knopfler the lead singer and lead guitar was voted number 27 out of the 100 greatest guitarists of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. He's great.
I lived a few doors away from the drummer here, Terry Williams, in Hanover Street Swansea S Wales UK! I’ve seen him play locally and with this band too, and for me he’s definitely one of the best in the world! I saw him play with a local band called The Breeze’ with Brian Breeze from the same area. Brian again was so outstanding on the guitar and Terry on the drums it was amazing! All this in my local pub! 🏴
