I think the most impressive thing about Mark Knopfler's playing, in a LONG list of impressive things, is the fact that with all the crazy things he does on the guitar so effortlessly, it's the fact that he finger picks every damn note..

He's also left handed, but learned to play right hand.

It's a picking style and a sound that is more typical in country music that in rock music, which is part of what made them unique from the music scene at the time. He was certainly well-respected among his peers and the public in general.

I like right around 10:05 too, when the keyboard echoes Mark's riff and Mark looks over to him real quick, plays it again himself and looks back over his shoulder. That band was in sync and hot that night and you can tell they knew it and felt it. They were having fun!

„how do you do that?“ Good question! That is Mark Knopfler, one of the very few guitar players, who would finger pic his guitar! And he is playing call and response between his voice and his guitar, which in itself is hard to fathom how you even do that…! And the chemistry between the band members and the dynamic-changes - insane! And the drummer is hot as hell!

One of the best rock performances of all time. Terry Williams was absolutely on fire on the drums. Near the beginning of the video, you can see Knopfler look back at him and grin. The lead guitarist is, as most viewers know, Mark Knopfler--songwriter, lead vocalist and lead guitarist for the band. And unquestionably one of the greatest guitarists of all time. His playing style is referred to as "finger-picking" and his approach to that is somewhat unique though there are many guitarists who mostly use that style rather than employing a pick.

I've followed Mark's career from the very beginning to the present, new album out soon at 74yo. His voice was very Dylanesque, then by 1986 his voice started to sound more like Mark Knopfler. By 2015 there's a song called Lights Of Taormina. He sounds so different to back then but you still know it's him. I really recommend Brothers In Arms from the concert Dire Straits Live "On The Night"1993. Every reactor I've seen here stated it had impacted them so much. My dire straight story.
It was my second year at college in Boston, week of midterms, Tuesday or Wednesday I believe, 6:30 p.m. . A friend of two of my roommates comes in and says he has won two tickets via a radio DJ to tonight's "Brothers In Arms" tour show (1986) at the Boston garden and he can't find anyone to go with him because of midterms. The concert starts in about an hour and a half and these two guys both say no, he looks at me and says would you want to go? I responded in a heartbeat yes even though I had two midterms the next day. We picked up the tickets at the door. I couldn't believe it They were 6th row center on the floor. I've never been so close to a major rock and roll band for such a long time, it was absolutely unforgettable. His fingers fly, no pick... Folks didn't want to leave they came back out for a second encore song. It was really a very well done show. I didn't do all that well on those two midterms but it was worth it.

I bought this as a teenager in the eighties, the entire Alchemy album is incredible. I was inspired to become a bass player thanks to John Illsley's cream suit and melodic bass playing (but mostly the cream suit).
However, Alchemy doesn't even make the NME's or Rolling Stone Magazine's top fifty live albums, which probably shows how the standards of their music journalism have slipped over the last few decades and also how Dire Straits were unfashionable because they could actually play their instruments.
But hey, I love Rush so fashion has never stopped me from rocking out, even if I was on my own in the corner whilst the Cool Kids were listening to Nirvana!

I may have listened to the song about fifty times but I never get tired of listening to it.
I think the Alchemy Live performance is one of the best together with Queen's at Live Aid.
What makes the performance at Hammersmith Odeon great I think goes beyond the performance of the individuals who did literally nothing wrong. It transmits an energy similar to that of a volcano eruption.
The rise in dynamics after the descent of the second solo is something truly explosive and at that point you suddenly find yourself moving your head to the rhythm and you feel as if you have entered and exited paradise.
    Simply uniquely fantastic

Your comment on the energy is spot on. This is a prime example of how the interaction between artist and audience creates a positive feedback loop. The (good) artist gets inspiration from the audience to do better, increasing feedback to up the performance even further, and so on...

The 1970s were dark punk days in Europe? Punk was in its very infancy in the mid 1970s, mainly in North America before heading to London and then to Europe. It didn’t really hit its stride until the 80s. Dire Straits was not a breath of relief from punk music, it just happened to coincide with the earliest formulations of punk music

Before the band recorded this, Mark had produced two albums for....BOB DYLAN!!!! Their album Love Over Gold has a song called "It Never Rains" which sounds like Bob wrote it. No, it was Mark. Bob clearly showed Mark that enpointe singing is not what you need for pop music. You need to get the point across, and Mark ALWAYS does. Off this video, you also have the song Tunnel of Love. Newcastle was so impressed by their favourite son, the lyrics of it are permanently in the public space overlooking The Spanish City. Not bad fer a man oo can't sing an' all.
Mark did a great video with ACDC's Brian Johnson (On the road with Brian Johnson), where the two Geordies discussed Mark's headband and Brian's Newsboy cap. In both cases it was keeping sweat out of their eyes.

The headband and tennis wristbands come from the old days of Mark Knopfler, an English teacher and newspaper reporter, playing tiny, hot, smoke filled pubs and clubs - where sweat burns your eyes and face.

Knopfler is in a class of guitarists at the absolute top of their game. His unique playing style, coupled with the way he phrases things along with the melody lines he uses creates this completely unique fingerprint, you know when you hear him. His vocals are just “hey, I’m here, I have something to say, here’s the story” but nothing fancy.
Romeo and Juliet is probably my favorite, second is Brothers in Arms then this one.
