56 here and have every single Dire Straits CD and the VHS video of this concert. Which by the way i was there to actually at this concert, which now seems a life time but it totally blew my mind.

Moreover, in this performance, the band very subtly speeds up and slows the performance, creating feelings of tension and release. Modern recording practise is to snap every instrument’s rhythm to a fixed grid, ensuring we never feel that tension.

CDs had just become a thing and Brothers in Arms was a rare DDD (for rock music) CD at the time. DDD meaning digitally recorded, mixed and mastered. It's contested that there wasn't actually any digital recording in 1985 so it was probably more likely ADD in reality but whatever, it was cool lol. What was super cool were the CD extended tracks. Mark IMO remains the best ever finger picking rock guitarist of all time. I have an original Alchemy Live book fold LP and I cherish it :)
If you watch how Mark plays it, the whole song bar the solos is basically a lick. I worked it out from the VHS back in the 80's. There are lot of creators on Shorts, and Tik Tok making it so much harder than they needed to by playing wrong.
This is what happens when you have a band full of people who are top tier at their instruments, playing in harmony and having a damn good time doing it. They're great, and they know it.

There's something to be said for humility, don't get me wrong, but there's also something really special when someone knows they're at the absolute top of their game and they're about to blow everyone away. No, this song is what happens when a band full of people show off their talent. When a band full of people decide to have fun they create "Twisting By The Pool" which is what Dire Straits also did.
What blows me away is that He taught himself how to play guitar, and ended up creating his own unique *finger picking* style, in a Rock Band of all things!!!!
According to stories MK has told in interviews over the years, he did amazingly teach himself to play mostly while listening to Chet Atkins records in his father's collection, which also led to him creating his unique fingerstyle playing with inspiration from Atkins. Of course, they later recorded an album together, "Neck and Neck," with Chet Atkins expressing great affection and respect for MK's playing. I'm sure that over the years Mark learned more of the technical aspects like musical references related to chords, notes and technique to further develop his style.

I saw Dire Straits live in 1982 ( incl this song) no fancy lights, pyrotechnics, support band etc just a tight bunch of musicians who knew what they were doing!! Great gig.

The quality of sound and the level of effort put into this performance says it all. This has to be one of the happiest and energetic sounding bands that have ever walked the earth.
Mark is left-handed person playing a right-handed guitar which makes sense since as in his case the left hand is very busy all of the time. He also wrote & arranged the music. Differing tempo was important to them, is what I think. It gave the audience a chance to contribute. xo He is also one of the only R & R artists who uses his fingers & not a pick. This is jamming. The guitar is talking to & responding to the keyboard player, you will see Mark nod to the key board player. This is live long play performances which was incredible to witness. Love Mark & all the incredible musicians he played with over so many years. x

At the time, I would say they were very accurately rated. In the decades since, underrated is a fair assessment, and I agree that it's really great to see people rediscovering them.
Mark was one of the premier guitarists of the era. His finger-picking style was his trademark. I grew up when country music was country, when Elvis came along, the Beatles, Motown, and what today we call "classic rock" filled the airwaves and the 8 inch speakers in our cars through the AM radio. This recorded is one of the best of all time. Queen at Live Aid hit these heights thanks to Freddie’s masterful control of the crowd. Bono has achieved similar effect and these have been recorded in their live albums: Red Rocks being a favvourite of mine. But this song does not stand alone in this amazing collection: Once Upon a Time in the West, Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, the amazing Tunnel of Love with its multiple changes in pace, as well my hidden gem Portobello Belle. This truly was THE concert and those lucky enough to be there are the truly blessed to have witnessed one of the all time great performances of a most all round talented band.

The guitar is the singer....I love how the drummer is really highlighted, as much as the lead guitar... Not just back in the dark, tucked away... Timeless.

I was born in 1959 was a teenager in the 1970s. I grew up with 70s Rock. Love the 70s Rock music. So much great music in the 1970s. A lot of good music in the 60s and the 80s too!
The song is about Mark's experience of going into a south London pub on a grim wet day where there happened to be a jazz band playing to a very small audience.

the star for me is the Drummer...that guy is absolutly unbelievable.......musically this is one of the most underrated bands in rock history across the board. Im glad more and more people are starting to listen

@@barryobrien2638 OK OK, jezz, Im not saying they arent incredible, I was just saying I hadnt heard of them at the level of other bands. Ive seen top 100 lists were they arent even on the list, to me that makes them underrated
@@carnivoroussoupspoon You're not wrong. They were absolutely huge stars at the time, but they haven't held a place in the public consciousness the way a lot of other rock bands have. At the time, I would say they were very accurately rated. In the decades since, underrated is a fair assessment, and I agree that it's really great to see people rediscovering them.
Mark was one of the premier guitarists of the era. His finger-picking style was his trademark.
I grew up when country music was country, when Elvis came along, the Beatles, Motown, and what today we call "classic rock" filled the airwaves and the 8 inch speakers in our cars through the AM radio. The golden age of music. Enjoy.

Mark Knopfler is an insanely gifted guitar player. He is one of the most sought after session guitarists. As mentioned previously, he picks with his fingers because he found that he can produce much better sounds this way. A gift to the musical world
Session gutarist? He's one of the greatest players of all time, I'm stunned by that comment, he's never been sought after, he is a global superstar. Always the front man and mostly a solo career

This recorded is one of the best of all time. Queen at Live Aid hit these heights thanks to Freddie’s masterful control of the crowd.
Bono has achieved similar effect and these have been recorded in their live albums: Red Rocks being a favvourite of mine.
But this song does not stand alone in this amazing collection: Once Upon a Time in the West, Telegraph Road, Romeo and Juliet, the amazing Tunnel of Love with its multiple changes in pace, as well my hidden gem Portobello Belle.
This truly was THE concert and those lucky enough to be there are the truly blessed to have witnessed one of the all time great performances of a most all round talented band.

The drummer was on fire for this performance. All of the musicians were in their groove for this one. One of the best live performances you will ever see and hear.

Mark Knopfler is a master story teller. His songs take you on a journey and always have a deeper meaning. His voice and guitar work together to add the emotion to the stories like no other.
There are great song writers, guitarists, story tellers, and singers in the world. But Mark is one of the few that is all of them together in one fantastic package. Check out “Tunnel of Love” live at Wembley Arena 1985, “Private Investigations” live on Alchemy. “Brothers in Arms”, “Speedway at Nazareth” live Mark Knopfler and Emmylou Harris version, and so much more. His solo career - 10 albums and a bunch of movie scores is fantastic as well.

Mark Knopfler has a quite sizable catalog. Not all of it with Dire Straits or even Rock and Roll. He plays a lot of Bluegrass music.

Guys, it is so fantastic to watch your reaction to the genius that is Mark Knopfler and the Dire Straits band. Sultans of Swing is a great beginning. As a lyricist, Mark is all about storytelling. One rainy night, he heard a pub band playing some jazz. He walked in "outa the rain" to "hear the jazz go down". There were very few patrons there "competition from other places" etc. But the catch for Mark was the fact they called themselves the Sultans of Swing. Almost all of Mark's songs are stories, coupled with some of the most extraordinary guitar playing in various music genres you can imagine. "River of Love", "Tunnel of Love", "Skateaway"", "Telegraph Road", "Portabella Belle", "Brothers in Arms", "Money for Nothing", "The Bug", "Walk of Life", "Why worry", "Calling Elvis", " When it comes to you", "You and your friend", "Heavy Fuel", "Private Investigations", "So far away from me", "Romeo and Juliet", "Hold on", "Local Hero", the acoustic versions of "Wild Theme", "Smooching", and the Electric guitar versions of "Going Home" based on the melodies in "Wild Theme" - all the music soundtracks he wrote for the movies Local Hero, Cal, The Princess Bride, Wag the Dog, and Altamira, and duet album with the one of the other greatest guitarists - Chet Atkins. Mr. Knopfler is an absolute brilliant guitarist and songwriter. Somewhat similar style to Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac, only in that finger picking. Romeo and Juliet is a brilliant song. Such a poem. Indigo Girls do great cover.

I've watched hundreds of bands play live in my life. Im 52 and Dire Straits live in Dublin Ireland 1991 was the best. Incredible live band

Thank you my new found friends, yes this what we listened to 47 years ago. I wish I could time warp you back to hear it live. I'm pleased to see that you still get this. I was born in 1959 was a teenager in the 1970s. I grew up with 70s Rock. Love the 70s Rock music. So much great music in the 1970s. A lot of good music in the 60s and the 80s too!
The song is about Mark's experience of going into a south London pub on a grim wet day where there happened to be a jazz band playing to a very small audience.
