Another reactor observed that during the build-up the audience became like part of the band. I thought that, too. The energy of the performance creating an incredible synergy between the musicians and those in the audience. We, too, who are watching the video... get swept up in it all. Phenomenal experience! Mark is one cool genius with his playing and his songwriting, and everyone on stage are top calibre... and certainly were at the top of their game on this Alchemy tour.

That's not just 'that man on the right'. That is Mark Knopfler and finger picking is his 'thing'!
Plus Terry Williams was totally on fire. That entire concert was brilliant with the band completely dialled in and letting the music guide them. They were definitely 'in the zone'. If you listen to Telegraph Road then you would have heard Alan Clark on the keyboards completely take it to the next level as well, just like Terry did in this song.

I remember my earliest memory of this song im born 1981 and in 1986 i "danced " to this one my dad put my feet on his feet and told me to stay on and moved to this song in a dance. Ever since that i loved this kind of m usic and wow what a music. Amazing imean he could have picked alot of music but he made Dire Straits our music and mine. learning to dance by standing on my fathers feet ealry on actualy gave me rythm :)

They have had so many hits including "Money For Nothing", "Romeo & Juliet", "Private Investigations", "Twisting By The Pool", "Walk Of Life", "Telegraph Road", "So Far Away", "Brothers In Arms" etc. They don't have a bad song.

I was there, at Hammersmith , back in July 1983, up on the balcony, few rows out of shot...
I was just 18 , It was amazing, but you don't appreciate it at the time because it appears to be normal! I'd only seen the rolling stones before this and so the bar was high and they smashed it!
We knew they could play, but not like this.
Terry Williams was the standout for me amongst all that talent.
Now you must see the Alchemy version of Telegraph road, it was the encore and yes, Terry was still whipping those skins!

The original studio version of this song is from 1978, when the band was just breaking out. They needed a shorter version for radio play, and the band didn't have keyboards yet so they couldn't do the quieter part with the guitar solo over keyboards. But this version is from 1983, so they'd been playing it live for 5 years and had worked it all out. And they went from a 4-part band to 6-part.

As I've heard the story, it's not so much that the band who inspired the song were _bad,_ it's that they were unfashionable and unapologetic about it. The audience "don't give a damn about any trumpet playin' band\ it ain't what they call Rock and Roll". And despite the kids not caring about jazz, the band kept on playing and proudly declared themselves "the Sultans of Swing". The lyrics list the band members, and they're all just there because they love playing music. And that really sums up Dire Straits - they didn't chase trends, didn't follow fashion, they played music they enjoyed playing.

"Guitar George" and "Harry" is a tribute to George Young (older brother of Malcolm and Angus of AC/DC) and Harry Vanda, two members of the 60's Australian band the EasyBeats, who were incredibly popular in Oz, had one HUGE international hit (Friday on My Mind) but never broke big on the international stage. Harry and George then went into production as Vanda and Young, mentoring many Australian bands (including, of course, AC/DC). You ought to check out "Friday on My Mind" - well worth a view.

It's not that the Sultans were a bad band, they just weren't a very good one; but it is a tribute to everybody who plays for the love of playing, making music in a group, maybe doing the odd performance on a weekend for a sparse crowd. It's the spirit of the thing.

Love love love Dire Straits and Sultans of Swing in particular. I have a very short list of songs that I have to start again once it’s complete. This is on that list. By the way at that time the drummer was Pick Withers. What a name that is. ☺️

One small note, I’m not a huge fan of how Mark Knophler sings this version, I prefer the originals vocals.

Please listen to basically any dire Straits song without commenting until the end of song. Mark Knopfler is one of the most gifted guitarists of his era, but never makes a top ten list even top 30 list. The mind boggles because he plays without tricks, finger tapping like Eddie, he leaves Hendrix, Clapton, Santana for dead. His equals are Page and Gilmore. It's funny because everyone bangs on about Angus Young, who in his own right is the bomb, but no one knows Malcolm Young rest his soul ❤️, Was yet superior to his brother but hated the limelight. Now back to Straits. Definitely the last of the big bands..now like the other comments say, listen to telegraph Rd, going home ( the theme from local hero) and Romeo and Juliet on his beautiful resonator guitar.. the sound is like liquid magic. Rant over. 👍

If I had to choose just one rock star that I'd like to buy a pint for and have a chat, it's Mark Knopfler. (If they're not available, then Eric Clapton, Andy Fairwether Low, Ringo, Keith R..... All welcome!)
