My late dad took over teaching English from Mark Knopflier at a tough school in Loughton on the outskirts of London. In those day teachers just had to pass or fail their first year on their own. But Mark Knopflier regularly came in to help him, especially with the most difficult classes. Even thought he didn't have to, wasn't paid to.
My dad said he was hard to follow as he was so well like by the pupils, and such a good teacher.. In those days you couldn't buy teaching resources, you had to make them. He gave my dad his as he said he wasn't returning to teaching. And that Mark Knopflier was a kind and lovely man. .

The Telegraph Road is a major north-south 70 mile thoroughfare in Michigan. Mark Knopfler was inspired to write this song while riding in the front of the tour bus, which made the journey down Telegraph Road. At the time, Knopfler was reading the novel The Growth Of the Soil by the Nobel Prize winning Norwegian author Knut Hamsun and he was inspired to put the 2 together and write a song about the beginning of the development along Telegraph Road and the changes over the ensuing decades. This was a metaphor for the development of America and the ruining of one man's dreams in the wake of its decline, in particular focusing on unemployment. Now must listen Tunel of Love (wembley 1985), Brothers in Arms (one the night, 1992), Private Investigations (on the night). All live, DS must listen live versions

Telegraph Road is actually US Highway #24. It is a horrible road to travel. Traffic is always congested and nothing but blight and decay on either side. When it rains , it floods. Freezes in the winter and nothing but construction in the summer. I used to have to drive everyday. It was more stressful than my job. I am so glad those days are done.

The Tunnel of Love is about a fairground I used to go to as a kid called the Spanish City in Whitley Bay. They closed it for a long while but have now revamped it putting the lyrics to the song on the steps. I always wondered where the Telegraph Road came from as a younger man (before internet) and now I know, so thanks for that.

Telegraph Road is a masterpiece, and that's probably the best live version out there. The entire band were incredible on the Alchemy Tour. The pianist, Alan Clark, really delivered a phenomenal performance. Glad you guys enjoyed it, this is one of my favourite songs of all time. The lyrics and composition are genius. Mark Knopfler, too, is a musical genius.

You have absolutely right, Alan Clark brings so much emotion to songs and the way he plays is unique. Especially on this song it is pretty much a dialogue between guitar and piano. Other song where I love Alans performance and contribution is Romeo & Juliet, especially live On the Night 1992 version. I’m so happy that I had the chance to hear band live in Helsinki on their final tour 1992.

I was walking up to Eldon Square in Newcastle, in 1978, heard the Sultans of Swing as a 13 year old, and was so blown away. I went into the record shop and bought the single... Hooked ever since. The Telegraph Road, and the Love Over Gold album is my favourite. I know Making Movies was in-between with the brilliant Romeo and Juliet, Skate away, and Tunnel of Love. The fact they sing so many songs about the place I am from makes it more relatable, and for all of you who don't know these places, you should research them or better still visit them. I love to sit on the steps of the Spanish City in Whitley Bay listening to the Tunnel of Love with the lyrics literally sat beside me, it's a great way to lose yourself for a little while.

Everyone praises Mark Knopfler on guitar and Terry Williams on drums (and rightly so), but let's hear it for Alan Clark on keys and piano. He's the unsung hero of this song and others such as Tunnel of Love.
The orchestration of these songs is superb, particularly the interplay between guitar and piano. Mark just hands over some of the most important melodic lines to Alan and he carries the whole song at these points.
This is a masterclass on how musicians should play together in band...

All of the Dire Straits songs are stories. Some personal, most true. Sultans of swing was one such. This song came while on tour. Mark Knopfler was reading a book (I forgot the title but someone will know) on the tour bus crossing the USA, and thinking about the rise and fall of things as society develops. Et Voila. One of the great story songs, and arguably their best recorded live performance. Tunnel of love if you get the right version is great too. Largely autobiographical, and talks about places he'd known then. In the stone steps outside of the Spanish city (a building in the north east of England) a line from the song is etched. A love story of sorts, and homage to his past, even down to the use of the Carousel Waltz as an Introduction. Romeo and Juliet is a great song too, and Brothers in arms, Walk of Life, and all of them really. Great reaction, good to see the love of things artfully rendered. Hope you, family friends and all who drop by here, are, and remain well.

First... Love you guys, all reactions. Now... this is THE BEST DIRE STRAITS SONG. The story-telling, the subtlety, the transitions, the artistry, the band-members' individual performances. It's a rhapsody, is just superb. Of course I love the other tracks (Romeo & Juliet, Sultans, Tunnel, funny-enough, not-so-much Brother in Arms) but this is THE ONE.

Mark Knopfler is still singing, playing and composing music. He has just put out a new album in the last couple of months. Please keep going through both Dire Straits and Mark's solo catalogues. If you want another banger, check out Industrial Disease...

Hey guys just loving your reactions to my favorite band and artist Mark Knopfler. I really recommend the song Brothers In Arms from the performance Dire Straits Live " On The Night" 1993. Every reactor I've seen said it had a massive impact on them and it's hard not to cry on this one. This time he uses a Pensa guitar that goes right through your body. Anyway Cheers and all the best from Australia
    👍🎸🎸🎸

    Yes it is a Masterpiece.
The story of what we call progress , and moves through religion, law, and war. Unfortunately we then see the demise of society , no work, and business closed , leaving people in a pit of despair.
This has become my number one song of all time as it tells a vivid story of what is happening in our world through greed.
As a fan of 60s music, Beatles, Stones etc this song took story telling with masterful musianship to another level and this is LIVE.
    Absolutely incredible.
Every time I watch this I cannot believe the talent that is there before me.
EPIC is the right call on this.
Yes I take the point regarding you hit the height , but don't forget The Beatles wrote some brilliant music but this track is another level.
Brothers and Arms and Romeo and Juliet are 2 other great tracks.
    Loved your reaction, thank you.
