I saw Santana last night at the Houston Rodeo, and it struck me that you can't go to a Santana concert expecting a sing -along, which I think some people do. That's like going to the opera and expecting One Direction. You are going to be disappointed. Carlos Santana is such a talent. He's a legend, so much so that he's not appreciated enough in his own time. Remember the first Back to the Future movie when Marty McFly played Johnny Be Goode and went crazy with the guitar and all the dancers just stopped and stared, and he said, "Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet, but your kids are going to love it." I think Santana occasionally simplifies it for us and gives us a song for the general public like Smooth, or Why Don't You and I and it becomes super popular because we get it. Not saying those songs aren't awesome. They are! But then he gives us a taste of something more advanced and surreal and full of incredible improvisation and we don't completely comprehend it because it's not predictable, it's like he's playing an emotion or a color and we just have to experience and feel it rather than sing along. That's true art. He's an artist who signs his work by singing his name. Play on, Carlos Santana.
