- "First Look" Clip from Megalopolis.
Here is an a clear, concise analysis of MEGALOPOLIS:
“A man balances precariously on a ledge high above a once-grand city in the opening scene of Francis Ford Coppola’s MEGALOPOLIS, and the movie that follows is - at least in part - about an entire civilization teetering on a similarly precarious ledge, devouring itself in a whirl of unchecked greed, self-absorption, and political propaganda, while a few bold dreamers push against the tide, striving to usher in a new dawn. The man is called Caesar (Adam Driver), like the Roman general who gave rise to the Roman Empire, Cesar the labor leader who organized California’s farm workers in the 1960s, and a few other notably great men of history. But he is also clearly an avatar of Coppola himself - a grand visionary witnessing a once-great thing (call it cinema if you must) withering before his very eyes and determined to revivify it. And, after decades of planning, MEGALOPOLIS the movie is the powerful elixir he has produced: a sweeping, big-canvas movie of provocative ideas and relentless cinematic invention that belies its maker’s 84 years of age. Coppola seems to have been born-again by a strike of filmic lightning, and the movie - no, the experience (complete with in-theater “live cinema”) - that has emerged feels at once the work of a film-school wunderkind unbowed by notions of convention, but also the work of a wizened master who knows much about life and the ways of the world. To paraphrase Coppola himself speaking decades ago about his APOCALYPSE NOW, MEGALOPOLIS isn’t a movie about the end of the world as we know it, it is the end of the world as we know it. Only, where APOCALYPSE left us in a napalm-bombed fever-dream haze, MEGALOPOLIS, surprisingly and movingly, bestows on us a final image glowing with hope for the future.”
“Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor. I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.”
~francis ford coppola
This is soooo moving !!!! Can't imagine how the master Coppola feels, having lost the love of his life just when he is about to bring to the world THE film he dreamed about for so many years !!!!! I think every cinema fan around the world feels sorry and sad for him and express condoleances...
👌👌
😢
Ahh I didn't know she passed away.
RIP.
Damn that hurt
One has to admire the courage of Francis for following his blinding passion for this film putting everything on the line including his own wealth dismissing all the naysayers along the way.
This is a great director taking one last swing at the fences, and I like many will be rooting for him to hit that home run if only to show the world that it is never too late to chase your dream.
You're rooting for a director to make an entertaining movie, if only to show the world that it's never too late to chase your dream. Are you chasing your dream to be entertained, or are you suggesting that the director should dream of entertaining you?
@@yeeeehaaawbuddyor better yet: maybe he just likes movies? ? ? ? ?
I've been hearing about this film for 30 years, Can't believe it's here
I had tears in my eyes just at the logo "American Zoetrope" LOL I'm just dying to see this at last !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
I've been hearing only for two, and I'm mad about It, this teaser only hits me harder!
if you watch Coppola's making of documentary of Youth Without Youth made in 2006/2007, he even talks about Megalopolis there.
Truly a decades in development passion project
@@nms7872 The fact that he sold $100M of his own wine empire to fund this thing is reason enough to watch it.

FRANCIS JUST WHAT THE HELL COULD YOU POSSIBLY BE COOKING
I want to ask, is this the real first look?
@@rinedgecombe8165It's official.
Probably a huge turd, judging by his filmography the last 30 years
👌👌
@@rinedgecombe8165yes
I absolutely love that we live in an era where Francis Ford Coppola not only still makes movies but has a TH-cam channel. It’s like if Leonardo da Vinci were here promoting art ads on a newspaper. Life is cool.
Coppola has always shown how dirty Hollywood really is. This is his final punch at an industry that simply does not care about art.
Imagine being a distribution company and refuse to buy the new movie from a legend like Coppola, what a shame
Knowing some stuff about the movie, you'll understand eventually why studios are pretty reasonably not looking to distribute it
Coppola has made turds for 30 years now, it's no surprise they wouldn't touch this
Sorry but the man hasnt produced a good film since the 90's, and especially with the money thats already being put into this i can see distributors being iffy
Its like asking "imagine being a team and not wanting michael jordan" when jordan was in his bobcats era
Or Scorsese. It happens all the time with filmmakers.
👌👌
It feels like we're in the golden age of cinema again. What a time to be alive.
😆 It's absolute shit. Nothing more, nothing less.
Thank you Mr Coppola and condolences. What a gift - those two minutes clicked with me like an old friend I haven’t seen for ages. This is cinema.
Movie of a lifetime incoming
Flop of a lifetime
@@jakebiomask art for arts sake
@@tylercwhitmoreI don't care how much money it makes I just want it to be good. And I have serious doubts about that. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Overhype of a lifetime 🫠 just cause it’s a lifetime project doesn’t mean it will be -the be & end all- sometimes people obsess too much and it blinds them. Might want to take notes 📝
@@jammin2575 take notes of what? Your pessimism?
Another bold vision from the maestro. Francis, so sorry about Eleanor. I interviewed her once about "Hearts of Darkness" at your shared Pied-a-Terre when you were in town shooting "Bram Stoker's Dracula" -- I still remember that you had a small poster for the (I think Korda) "Thief of Bagdad" on the wall. I've never met a more grounded person than she was. Her quiet strength gave me a real insight into the collaborative nature of your relationship, and my heart broke for you when I heard the sad news. She could tell I was a big fan, so when we were done chatting, she grinned and then escorted me to the little video screening room reserved for you to watch dailies in each evening, where she asked me if I'd like to sit in your chair. A gracious and poetic act of what I call "bringing water to the troops," meaning spreading inspiration. Thank you for persevering, in art and life. You're a humanizing voice in a business that needs all of those it can get. And may the gods bless your lady, and your union, which I know also perseveres.
Do you think Francis Ford Coppola is in his house reading TH-cam comments right now?
@@TempleGuitars Having interviewed Francis twice as well as Eleanor, my response is that you'd be surprised by how unpretentiously social he can be. He's a mensch. A true mensch. And anyway, expressing myself in the form of a condolence seems, in the moment, kind.
nice comment!
@@DraculaMemoirsOr someone in his inner circle or family could see your comment and pass it on.
This clip has already gotten me more hyped than any trailer has this year
Yes, the art of the clip. So much more compelling and eventful.
Yes this alone - the fact they didn't do the usual Hollywood show the whole film as a 30 second super cut that negates the need to ever see it - is going to make me want to go see it.
Looks like a scene from Matrix and Batman.
The way the movie industry has treated Coppola the whole way on this project makes me want to throw money at him just to spite them. They balked at promoting a finished film stacked with celebrities just because they don't have control over it.

Cannot wait to see this. Coppola is one of the greatest filmmakers of all time.
I worked on this movie for a summer, over 20 years ago. Go FFC!
Do tell?
@@zacharyantle7940 Yup, in Brooklyn of all places. Table reads, script writing, storyboarding, art dept all cooking on development. I was starting out in the biz, was a lesson to see even FFC fighting to get his funding. Assumed the lesson was, sometimes even FFC can't get it made, but glad that wasn't the case for his sake. Haven't seen it yet but so looking forward.
Never thought I’d be so excited for an architecture epic
That's a nice way of putting it.
Yep, can’t go wrong with a view of the Chrysler Building.
This looks nothing like what I expected based on the info we had, even more intrigued now
I'd say it looks something like I expected. Some intense characters set against the backdrop of a sprawling, futuristic, fantastical city.
Yeah but time stopping powers weren't on my predictions list
It's exactly what I expected, and more
@@DoctorXander These power come in handy later in the movie 😉
What i'm confused about is how this has a supposed $120mill budget but looks cheaply made
I just saw Bram Stoker's Dracula for the first time and was 1000% amazed. I'm so excited for this movie! If this was shot digitally, it looks impressive and very film-like - the color, lighting, resolution all look so great! This opening scene has me mesmerized and I'm even more excited having seen it. How many times I wished I could yell "Time - stop!"
In Dracula 1992, the only “computer” effect is the blue hellfire appearing in the front gates of Castle Dracula as the carriage rolls in, according to IMDB Trivia.

I think it’s time that we give real filmmakers everything they want.
Pretty sure they are doing ok as is.
@@ItsEverythingElse It's not about them. It's about getting the best work from them. All they want to do is show us great things, and they're almost never allowed to.
If someone makes a movie that makes them a filmmaker. Stop being so fucking pompous
Real filmmakers are not from Hollywood.
Unfortunately it seems most people just want to watch mindless superhero crap. Hence that's where the money goes.
This movie looks like a freemasons wet dream. The geometry, the architecture, the clothing, the accessories, the boots, the angles, the posture of the character, where he places his hands, the themes. This movie is going to go over so many people's heads it's not even funny. I'm there day one.
Elaborate? 👀
Wow man, you're so much better than everybody else. Very impressive.
I've never been so excited for a film!
Thanks Francis, I hope this is your greatest movie, in the face of all the production companies that have refused to distribute it.

this film will hit like 1980's crack. 💯
looking forward to it.
I never thought a short clip like that would give me this excited.. ready for this movie now LOL
We live in an odd world where Monkey Man or Love Lies Bleeding gets major releases when the studios knew there was literally an infinitesimal or no audience for either film and they turn around and won't release this saying there is no audience for it. Hollywood is kind of incoherent and has no creative impulses left to take chances anymore unless some algorithm tells them to do something.
If these 2 movies are releasing in great scale, why not Megalopolis ? Hollywood is strange.
My personal mission is to show this movie to as many friends as I can when it releases. This will be a gem of a movie. Another masterclass in filmmaking.

Sooooo beautiful :) Time is one of the main obsessions of Coppola's filmography : "The Godfather part II", "Rumble Fish", "Peggy Sue", "Bram Stoker's Dracula" !!! I live in France but I won't be able to see it in Cannes :( I really hope this dream made film will have the release in theaters it deserves !! :) I can't believe the BS some people in movie industry are saying, like, "oh we don't know how to release it, we can't put this film in a genre or a category" !!!! Oh yeah ?? Have you heard about a category of films called "auteur" ???? Jesus... Anyway, dear mister Coppola, if ever you read this, thank you for the first images of this film, they are superb !!!! :) Can't wait to see the film !!! And I am so sorry for your loss ! God bless you, dear sir :)
It's so good to see a new Francis Ford Coppola film on the way. May it find success.
Looks like masterpiece is coming our way...
You are a Renaissance artist. We are so lucky you are still kicking and alive and showing us new paths. Thank you so much Francis.

Can't wait!! The film looks amazing Mr. Coppola 👏👏
That score at the end sounds amazing!!

Just as he's been wanting to make this film for over forty years, I bet Francis has been thinking about what the trailer would be. I'm so happy that Megalopolis is finally happening, but devastated that he didn't get to share this time with his wife. Can't wait for your new film, Francis. God bless you.
We're leaving a reality where directors like Coppola publish their work directly to us. What a time to be alive.
I seriously think this film could and will be an important moment in cinema history, a legend Like Francis Ford Coppola will not dissappoint anyone😊❤!
I’m beyond excited for this film. I’m a young filmmaker and Francis Ford Coppola has had such a huge impact on my work. Thank You Francis rooting for you all the way.
This looks absolutely genius! That twist with time got me hooked, want to know more! Want to see more! Also brilliant visuals... But what else can you expect from the man who made perhaps the most beautiful film of all... yes, of course it's Bram Stoker's Dracula!
@@LightheWorld. My enthusiasm is not only about the concept of playing with time, but about the overall concept and feeling of the scene - in The Matrix it was mainly used for the possibility of composing original action scenes, whereas here it is clearly about the development of a character who decides to "go beyond the edge" , but he hits the brakes as he apparently has the ability to cheat in his world (or in a simulation of the world?... is this a simulation of the new New York he wants to build? Either way, I just want to know more). What I find brilliant about it is the clean style, the visuals, the pacing (despite the trend of recent years) the long shots and fluid camera runs, the editing composition, the emphasis on subtle acting, you just know that it's directed by the Movie Brat of New Hollywood era.
@@LightheWorld. The cool thing about opinions is that they are subjective, and that we can completely dismiss yours. Lol. Try to have fun every once in awhile, it doesn't have to be so serious!

I think the response to the distributors who don’t know how to sell this aren’t looking at the key marketing components on how to sell it. If you sell it as a Coppola movie then the rest will speak for itself

P.S: Those who created the trailer managed to surprise me with the trailer. And of course Francis Ford Coppola
One thing we know, this isn’t a movie for the mainstream. Thank god for that!
So far this movie has done the most sublime hype ever. Didn't even know it was in production until about a month ago when they said it was in problems with finance now it being teased ever so gently into our subconscious. Love it

Wow! What an intriguing bit of film that is. He was able to stop time and then restart it. What an unusual superpower! I’m sorry to hear of your dear Eleanor’s passing. It’s a wonderful way to honor her life with your creation of this film.
In addition to your wonderful films I have to thank you for introducing me to Rhodia paper & Caran d’Ache writing implements. After purchasing them at Coppola winery in a section called something like ‘Francis’s Favorite Writing supplies’ they morphed into one of my must bring home from many European travels. And then my children grew and everyone adores a good stationary store. Salut!

This might get me back into the theater.
Coppola you are a genius. 30 years in the making, I can't believe it's finally here! Click 2, the sequel to the 2006 blockbuster comedy by Adam Sandler. This movie will change everything we know about cinema.
Here in Asia, Mr Coppola ranked the same with another Asia master class filmmaker, late King Hu.
Love you Godfather part one, and Dracula. Its like reading a thick encyclopedia.
No crappy cheesy lines, down to earth style of filming, no irrelevant exaggerate costumes, close to original novel as possible.
Will watch this movie not because for any actors/actress but to enjoy the film direction of Mr Coppola.
And why are studios not wanting to distribute this.
From what I've read, too ambitious, not easily categorised
This is the turning point we needed to stem the tide of entropy in our civilization. I hope this is the spark to inspire a new renaissance in America. This scene reminds me of the opening scene in the first chapter of Fountainhead by Ayn Rand.

This looks beyond amazing. I’ve been waiting for this film for long time. Congratulations!
Holy Cow, that scene and the description, gave me chills. This "powerful elixir" of a movie might just be the antidote we all need.
⚠️ Genius at work ⚠️
This needs more publicity if it's the return of a living legend like Coppola. Years of development hell that should be rewarded with a 1B box office gross and 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Yet studios wouldnt push it that hard unless its a new Marvel or DC movie. If this movie flops, it wont be Coppola's fault, nor the crew, nor the cast, but the Studio that will release it worldwide.
The cinematography alone is better than all MCU movies! I loved the color grading.
Yes so true! Would love to be at the premiere.
