To be honest, what was he supposed to do? They were literally going to beat him to death. I think they deserved what they got. Plus if Arthur wasn't there, what would they have done to that girl? He was right to fight back.
The acting is so phenomenal, I already saw this movie like 5 times since it came out and I can't get enough of it. The cinematography, the brilliant acting, the soundtracks, the dialogues, the deep meaning of the story,... It's THE perfect movie for me.
The first two kills were 100% self-defence. The third one though... Not so much, it was an act of pure revenge.

I feel the laughing is a nervous,coping mechanism. I get a sense that since being a child he was unable to express, constant bullying, a mentally ill mother who let her boyfriend abuse him as a kid,all those supressed emotions, unable to be truly understood , made him eventually rage, like a volcano spurting out lava. The only way he knew he could be seen and heard was through killing, he finally felt in control.
I honestly think schools should show this to children to stop bullying.

My favorite scene in the entire movie. Great job Arthur. You didn't leave witnesses.
I liked how he shot the first two out of genuine self-defense, but the 3rd was pure rage/vengeance. Shows the inherent conflict within the character, how he's a victim of his tragic circumstances but he went above and beyond that and chose to become a monster.

Why the f they had to act like total assholes in the first place? Why attacking someone, who is obviewsly psychological instable and need help more than being beaten - whereas it's bad enough that they were willing to harrass the woman. Were they drunken or did they think they'd get away with everything and any actions? What arrogant youngsters, who deserved their fate anyway...
What really ties Arthur's character into a bow for me is the pained breaths for air when he loses control of his laughter. It's what really hits home the fact that Arthur really is just in a constant state of complete agony, and that none of the laughter throughout the movie is real until right at the very end after he shoots Murray.

@@weedyp I've been there,mate. I was bullied both at school and college. Sometimes fighting back felt pointless because either the bullies would become harsher or the teacher would rebuke me for it.

He literally did. The look he gave her showed that he'd stand up for her if he was able to, because he was worried about her (and that's also why his laughter kicked in). Arthur was a very caring person before his breakdown.

Edit since this got so many hits: I agree that Arthur murdered the 3rd guy. You can't chase someone down and murder them even if they were hurting with you. My comment was merely a parody of the moment. I don't actually feel bad for the guy, even though he was technically murdered. I believe in the law, I believe in self defense. I believe in a proper interpretation that sees justice done for ALL involved.

I love this movie a lot, especially because my Dad loves it as much as I do. Although, he grew up as a gang member in 1980s Mexico so when he laughs, I don't know whether to be relaxed or freaked out.
