Why aren't they bringing the world back as, I don't know... An animated series.
Because this is likely a test, to see if there is a market. Animation is expensive and time consuming. A comic run on the other hand is dirt cheap by comparison. It's pretty common in the industry to have tie-in comics to build the lore, and test audiences.

@@TurtleDude05 A test? They really need a test for Batman TAS? One of the best animated series of all time? They just released the series in bluray. That wasnt a test? That doesnt make any sences. And the comic book industry is not doing so well right now. Making it even harder as a test.
Making a toyline around a comic book (mini series) makes even less sences.

I have a theory about how Jason could have been Robin without really being Robin at the same time. Jason would have always seen Batman as a father figure as his father was in prison. When he saw that the original Robin had left he saw it as his chance. He fashioned himself a homemade Robin outfit and go to fight crime with Batman. Though Bruce would reject him, similarly to Mr. Incredible and Incrediboy in The Incredibles. Full of resent Jason interupts Batman while fighting Ra's and is killed. Ra's takes his body and resurrects him with the Lazarus pit. He gives Jason what he never had a father. Jason is trained by R'as and a few years later returns to get revenge on Batman. I was thinking nearly the same thing except he steals dick's first robin costume (how old was he when he became robin again?) instead of making his own.
I think Jason could be a third Robin, after Tim was jokerised. He could even have story but I think it's easier for him to be third Robin instead of regular second.

Everyone else is worried about it being canon. I’m more worried about the fact that nobody has noticed that in the Batman Beyond Pilot, one of the Jokers said “lets put a smile on that face” BEFORE The Dark Knight!

I swear, this comic needs more than 6 issues. Just everything announced seems more like 36 issues.
That is what got me worried. Seems like a LOT. But than again, I trust Paul Dini more than anyone else when it comes to Batman and the DCAU.
Hell, I want this to be a whole new TV series.
I think I know what how DC could fit Jason into the dcau without it undermining what happened to Tim in Return of the Joker's flashback sequence. That it could be that during the two years between Old Wounds flashback and Tim becoming Robin Jason briefly where's the mantle of Robin but because he's so hot-headed Bruce realizes he's too much of a risk that he may end up killing someone, and he's forced to forebay jason from being Robin any longer until he can get his anger under control Jason doesn't take it to Wells and he runs off disappearing Without a Trace and maybe when he resurfaces he takes it upon himself to do the things Batman Can't which is kill criminals.

Hopefully not. I think her storyline should stay where it ended. I loved it but it felt final with the ending they did.
Maybe this DCAU Jason Todd is a *rejected* Robin.
This is what I was thinking. Jason has been portrayed as being a rebel and it wouldn't be too out of character to have a story where he doesn't cut it as a Robin. Maybe he killed someone and Batman gave him the boot for crossing the line.

So they're working in reboot characters like The Batman who laughs, Talon and Thomas Wayne Batman but after all these years there's no Cass and Steph?
Dan DiDio probably wasn't fired yet when work started. If the mini is successful it probably will become ongoing (like Hush Beyond did for Batman Beyond) and then they'll likely show up.

@Will N The fact that Cass's only appearance is a terrible alternate timeline isn't exactly a great appearance it's like how the directors said that Steph was Tim's wife in Return of the Joker which was why she was blonde and wearing purple.
I want to see Steph and Cass properly and have Spoiler and Batgirl merchandise, they're both amazing heroes and important parts of the Batman Mythos and more people should acknowledge that

Wow, this is sooo cool! It's so amazing to see the revived interest in this universe in recent years, and I have to believe you guys play some part in that. I REALLY hope Jason isn't a Robin, I agree that it would really cheapen Tim's story. And God help you if you ever try to map Gotham like you mentioned! An insane challenge but if anyone can do it you guys can! Fantastic video, you guys always manage to make me laugh with these. Mattie's presentation is so great, he brings such energy and delivers jokes so well! The hilarious zooms and other editing tricks and the little running jokes like Tim's age are gold! Great work, I'm hyped for this new comic line! The new character I'm most excited to see is Town, personally.

I’m a little disconcerted about the whole Jason Todd thing since Tim Drake in this universe is essentially a combination of Jason Todd and Tim Drake which is why he remains my favorite Robin for cartoon adaptations (huge Jason Todd fan). I thought it was even stated by at least one of the creators that they really liked Jason but felt Tim would be better received by the audience so they used Tim’s name instead and combined the two characters. I think it would have been preferable for them just to leave that as is and not suddenly write Jason into the series as that really changes things in my opinion especially where Robin is concerned. But I’ll definitely be buying the comic and keeping my fingers crossed for the best. This is my favorite Batman Series so there’s no way I can turn down new content in the form of a comic. I’m extremely nervous, though. Thanks for the heads up...I wouldn’t have realized this was coming out otherwise probably.
i had the exact same concern tbh :/ it doesn't really make much sense, so at this point Jason would just be a completely different character im absolutely nervous that they might butcher him and go in the route of "he's just evil because" or "he was just angry /disobedient all the time cause reasons"

Fun fact: That map is legit official. It was made in 1999 for the No Man's Land story arc, and has been cannon ever since. A version of it even showed up in the Dark Knight trilogy.

I feel like Annie could be Annie, could just be another personality, and might just be something that Clayface couldn't suppress. Maybe Clayface is starting to deal with multiple personalities from the combination of isolation and all the roles he takes on? Whatever the case, she eventually breaks free and escapes him again. But Argus, seeing an opportunity to use someone who - on paper - doesn't exist, hires slade to capture her for testing as part of a plan for a next-generation infiltration program that, decades in the future, produces people like Inque. That way, they have Clayface to experiment on, but don't have to worry about the criminal justice system.
Good Theory.
My theory is that thanks to the chemicals, Annie's sentience and Clayface's genetics she could basicly have mutated from a drone into a spawn with her own genetics. Basicly she's mutated into Clayface's daughter. Bits of her remain unabsorbed withing Clayface and in a coma-like state. Soon to wake up from some event. Like maybe she's starting to grow back like cell division. Waking up she decides to escape again and knowing what she's capable of she's started to turn into other people to stay hidden.

One thing we are missing in the au is damion Wayne. For those who don’t know damion is. Batman’s biological son and grandson of ra al ghoul. The only time we see damion in the au is when he takes ra’s place in the league of assassins after being robin. The only time we see damion in the au is in a Batman beyond comic. Where terry fights damion and Bruce tries to redeem him

If they’re going to go for a new origin for Jason a possible one could be that he was supposed to be the next Robin. In those years before Tim becomes Robin, maybe Jason was supposed to be the second one but he was too violent/aggressive during his training and because so Bruce found he wasn’t fit for the mantle of Robin and fired him. It could be why Jason became the red hood and why he knows the bat family well (if that’s who they were referring to). The biggest change would be to not have Jason die so it doesn’t undermine Tim’s death in the family-like end, but I feel like they 100% could make that work.

What if this is them testing the waters for new material for a new animated series, which they could adapt it to? They made that Harley Quinn & Batman movie, which takes place after TAS, so it's not entirely impossible. Timm probably pulled back after The Killing Joke adaptation because of the fan backlash with the beginning prelude story with Batgirl, trying to play it more safe. They're seeing what the fans want.

PERFECT TIMING
In the original Hush storyline, at one point Hush tricks them into thinking that the secret identity of Hush is Jason. What characters are in that line? Hush, a Dark Multiverse Batman, a Batman who wasn't originally placed into the Dark Multiverse because he predates it but otherwise is exactly like every Dark Multiverse Batman, Azrael, Talon, Red Hood/Jason and Deathstroke. Who knows too much about the Batfamily and hates Batman? All of those but Deathstroke. Who could evade him? All of them. So, what about a twist on the Hush misdirect? All of these but Deathstroke have established reasons in multiple canons to screw with Batman's head. BWL? He's Joker Batman, no further reason needed. Vampire Batman? He went on a bloody rampage in his universe after being driven insane by being a vampire. Azrael? Wants to be Batman. Jason? Mad about his death/"death". Hush? Batman has everything he wants. Talon? Court of Owls. What would be more reasonable than all these various people coming together to screw with Batman for their own reasons _and_ hire Deathstroke to work as muscle/wear their disguise too? It's a bit of a retread of Hush, but done right it could be fantastic (aka Hush can't in command at all, maybe not even real, or if there's a Hush it's like in the original story but Tommy Elliot isn't involved). Actually, with Talon at play, there's an extra option: Jason is Talon.
Oh, I forgot Flashpoint Batman. Hmm... time travel? Multiverse? Dark Multiverse? As for Azrael chasing something stolen, that could be stolen by Talon Todd. Steal the suit to use it for the Court of Owls who could also be in conflict with the Order, getting Batman in conflict with them. As for how that could tie into existing lore like he suggested, well, how exactly did Bruce Wayne lose power in Gotham? Sure, he quit being Batman, but the company getting taken over seems like something that he couldn't have just let happened, but actively had to let happen. So if you establish the Court, you could tie it into that. Powers family heading the court?

In the White Knight Jason was older and the first Robin so maybe the white stripe on this new Jason means the same thing but there are way too many plot holes in the whole series and beyond to the JL animated series :/ I always saw the different shows as different timelines .

I would think Jason could be incorporated as somebody Batman had been training, but hadn't put in the field yet, possibly as an additional partner to Robin, maybe in a mindset that further backup would be appreciated or even after realizing how much Batgirl brought to the team he felt that expanding his proteges might be helpful. My thought is that his death could simply be that he felt like Batman was dragging his feet to put him in the field (the real reason being that Batman felt his anger issues were too much and wanted to find a way to get through to him on an emotional level first), so he went off on his own to fight a crime, to prove himself, and he got in over his head and was killed. From here, it could be said that Batman decided to forego the idea of a second partner because he felt his failing was splitting his attention between two proteges (or just out of respect for the dead). Now, in such a circumstance I'm not sure what codename Jason would be gearing up to use, but it would probably be another winged creature.

Now I wanna see the DCAU Titans
Jason Todd origin idea: What if they make Jason into Bruce's ward but Bruce chooses not to train him as a Robin. Without ever bringing Jason into the fold but still growing close to him. Then at a Wayne industries public event the Joker shows up and Bruce disappears to become Batman leaving Jason vulnerable. Being mischievous Jason decides to go after the Joker and being untrained he's killed. Bruce blames his reticence to train Jason for his death, thinking if he'd been Robin he could have defended himself. Then when Jason comes back with league of shadows training he's even more devasted and angry with Bruce for letting him die and for never telling him the truth. I think this is probably the best way they could introduce Jason in as accurate a way was possible without stepping on Tims legacy
